Bands, banners & bright orange sashes

What’s it all about? Everyone loves a parade, and the colour and exuberance of an Orange Order parade is very infectious. The bright orange regalia, billowing lodge banners and vibrant bands make for a bustling carnival. Yet there’s also symbolism on display that’s puzzling – all those Bibles, crowns and banner paintings of religious figures and historical events. What’s the point of it all?

Who are we Caring and & why are we sharing “Orange”?

King William landing at Torbay The Orange Order can be found throughout the United Kingdom. Also in the Irish Republic, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, West Africa and the USA. We are Protestant and patriotic. We take our inspiration from King William III, Prince of Orange. The “Glorious Revolution” of 1688 that brought William to the throne was a watershed in British history. It established a new and enlightened relationship between crown and parliament that is the bedrock of our democracy. It also brought an end to the savage persecution of Scotland’s Presbyterians (Covenanters).

The Orange Order is one of Scotland’s most generous givers to national and local charities. Members dig deep to help others, regardless of creed or colour. As a community organisation we are actively involved in a wide range of charity fundraising initiatives. Typical of many is a ladies Orange Lodge in Lanarkshire that has raised almost £150,000 in just a few years for good causes such as Erskine Homes, CHAS and Help for Heroes. The Order also has its very own registered charity which owns and operates three residential facilities that provide respite care.

Are we a Do I need political a family movement? connection to join?

No we are not. Members are encouraged to play a full part in the democratic process through the political party of their choice. But we are, politically, a unionist organisation that values the historic union binding Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom. We are fundamentally opposed to the selfish and divisive politics of Scottish nationalism and will oppose all attempts to destroy the world’s most successful union.

The famous Orange ballad, “The sash my father wore”, certainly speaks of a legacy handed down from father to son and mother to daughter. But there’s no need to have a family connection. To join the Orange Order is to be welcomed into a huge extended family. We have more than 500 Orange Lodges throughout Scotland, from the market town of Dumfries in the south west to the fishing port of Peterhead in the north east.
