A Friend in Need (AFIN)

A Friend in Need (AFIN) is an arm of the South Acton Congregational Church (SACC) It is a small, all-volunteer organization dedicated to offering financial aid to people in need in the Acton/Boxboro/Maynard area. A couple with young children were in danger of having their power shut off. With one part-time income, they were financially strapped. Their advocate contacted A Friend in Need, and we were able to provide financial assistance to prevent this family from losing their service. Usually we have a one-time limit for help given to any family, but due to the economy we are trying to be a bit more flexible about that. Our mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of our money comes through pleas published in our local newspa-

pers and from generous community residents. Acton/ Boxborough United Way and the Maynard Community Chest support us through grant money. Besides SACC, several other churches support us through their Mission Funds. Depending on the resources we have on hand, we can usually provide between $300 and $800 to A famithe needy family. Our mailbox is located at the South Acton Congregational Church. Our volunteers pay for postage and all other costs, so we are able to give away 100% of the money we receive. AFIN will consider helping anyone who is recommended by clergy or social professionals associated with a local agency. Anyone in urgent need can be considered for financial assistance by going to a member of the clergy or social service representative and asking them to contact A Friend in Need on their behalf. We do not discriminate and will try to help anyone with a genuine need. We can also be contacted at afriendinneedacton@ gmail.com. If you would like to make a donation, please send your check to A Friend in Need, c/o South Acton Congregational Church, 35 School St., Acton MA 01720.

Sept. 27 – Sept. 30 marks the 250th anniversary of the date John Murray preached the first Universalist sermon in America. On Sunday, Sept. 27, at 10 a.m., First Parish Church of Stow & Acton (FPC), Unitarian Universalist, will hold a service on “Universalism Then and Now.” The Rev. Dr. Cynthia L. Landrum will teach a little Universalist history and look at FPC’s own heritage as this service celebrates Universalism. Although FPC usually returns to two services at 9 and 11 a.m. each fall, these virtual services will continue to take place just once, at 10 a.m. each Sunday,

Assabet Co-op Market Announces Maynard Location!

Dedication of Polly Hayward & John Fletcher historic signs

The Assabet Co-op Market, a locally sourced, community-owned grocery store owned by more than 1,300 local residents, has announced their Maynard location! The Co-op will open next summer at 2 Powder Mill Road in Maynard, a beautiful riverside property that will feature ample parking and downtown walkability! The Assabet Co-op Market will be a full-service grocery store that prioritizes local food producers, reduces our food’s carbon footprint, increases access to healthy food for all, and keeps control of our food system here in our communities. It will feature every department found in a conventional grocery store, from produce to meat to bulk to deli, along with products sourced from more than 100 local food producers, including farms, cheese makers, brewers, coffee roasters, and more. Everyone can shop at the Co-op, and anyone can become an Owner and get great Owner benefits, from a share of the Co-op’s profits to bulk ordering discounts to a say in the store’s farms, products, and classes. The Co-op recently launched a $2M Capital Campaign to build their store, and Owners have already invested more than $650,000 in interest-paying Owner loans. To learn more about the Assabet Co-op Market and become an Owner online, head here!: https://assabetmarket.coo

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Maynard Cultural Council Seeks Funding Proposals Proposals for community-oriented arts, humanities, and science programs due November 16 The Maynard Cultural Council has set an November 16 deadline for organizations, schools, and individuals to apply for grants that support cultural activities in th community. According to Council spokesperson Richard Pepin, “These grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities in Maynard -- including exhibits, festivals, field trips, short-term artist residencies, or performances in schools, workshops, and lectures. Since 2021 is Maynard’s 150th anniversary, or sesquicentennial, we would welcome projects centering on that theme.” The Maynard Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community. ute a total of approximately $6,300 in grants, which will be divided into individual grants ranging from $50 to $1500, to support arts, humanities, and science programs benefiting the Maynard community. For more information on the Council and local guidance for this grant program, contact Sara Lundberg at [email protected]. Application forms and more information about this Local Cultural Council Program are available online at www.mass-culture.org and at https://www.mass-culture.org/lcc public applicant guidelines.aspx. Previously funded projects include: • Maynard Earth Day 2019 • Free Summer Concerts at Memorial Park • Wild & Scenic Film Festival at Maynard Fine Arts Theatre Who Can Apply? Individuals, organizations, agencies, schools, and non-profits may apply for grants that support activities in culture, humanities, arts, and sciences publicly benefiting the local community. Projects must take place between January 1, 2021 and be completed by December 31, 2021. All applicants must reside or be located in Massachusetts. All projects will be considered, but those using Maynard’s sesquicentennial as a theme will be given more weight. How do I apply? Applicants must be submitted online via the MCC website https://www.mass-culture.org/lcc_ public.aspx. The application is open as of September 1, 2020. The deadline for applying is Monday, November 16, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. What makes a good application? Each year we receive more requests than the funds that are available. The success of your grant may rely on careful planning and thorough preparation. Clearly identify dates, times, and locations. Include all costs in your budget, including inkind donations (free use of space or donated services). If permits or extra permission are needed, please identify them. If this is a collaborative project, please identify the stakeholders and spell out agreements. DID YOU KNOW? Independent retailers return more than three times as much money per dollar of sales than chain competitors.
