Dear Friend, OPPORTUNITY in the community...words of hope, and welcome, for our neighbors. Providing opportunity for our community is the ongoing work and mission of Association House, and is measured in many ways. Our greatest achievements are those which provide expanded opportunity to the more than 20,000 individuals and families we serve each year. In a year of unrelenting bad news from every sector of the economy, your support lessoned the impact for our families. You helped us respond to the needs of our neighbors in ways that continue to change lives, even as decreasing resources make for challenging times. The pages ahead have good news to share, and reflect the generosity our friends, the dedication of our staff, and the determination of our participants. This year alone we provided • • • •

loving homes for more than 100 abused or neglected children emergency food assistance to more than 5,000 neighbors transitional and permanent job placements for more than 400 men and women academic enrichment to more than 100 at risk children and teens

We are nearing completion of the lobby and first floor renovations at our 1116 North Kedzie building. Come visit us soon, and see the bright, newly expanded space for our children and teens, along with renovated offices for Intake and food distribution. The new space provides us the opportunity to provide services more efficiently, and offers a secure and welcoming entrance, with complete accessibility. As we pause to express our gratitude, we recognize the hard work of the Association House Board of Directors, and the leadership provided by our Board Chair, Cynthia Ullrich. Thank you for your tireless commitment to Association House. The vision, and generosity, of those that support us make it possible for Association House to continue the tradition of providing Opportunity in the Community. Best Wishes,

As we go to print, we couldn’t be more excited to share the launch of our new Association House website. With the award of our third Taproot Foundation service grant, the professional team of volunteers chosen to work with Association House guided us to creating a website which captures the depth of our programs and the passion of our staff. It is a composite snapshot of our past, present and future. Click with us at www.associationhouse.org and see first hand the impact of Association House.

Success & Highlights Association House showed me...I can do anything!

M

y name is Theresa. I am currently enrolled in the GED class at Association House. I dropped out of school when I was 18. When I was young, my education meant nothing to me. It had no value, because I felt that I had everything I needed to get by. But as I got older, I realized how much I needed an education. I realized it when riding the bus downtown and I would look around, and could not pronounce the words that were posted. I realized it when I had trouble reading the names of the streets, or couldn’t understand simple books and magazine. I realized I was missing a lot. My sister recommended that I enroll at Association House and get my GED. Before coming to Association House, I had not been schooled in twenty years. I felt that getting my GED would be like receiving a precious gift. Association House was the one place where that hope might become a reality for me. I enrolled in the Association House Vocational Bridge Academy. I joined both the GED class and the Career Planning class. I knew that one of my greatest obstacles was taking tests. I always failed when I tried. Now, I feel confident as I study and take tests at Association House in preparation for the GED exam. After just one year, I am already at the highest level in reading and grammar! Caring

and experienced staff are helping me learn to write essays, improve my math and read with comprehension. In a few months I will get to level 3 in Math, and I will take the GED test. Now I know I CAN do it, and succeed. My dream is to someday be a chef. I know I will not be able to move up from doing janitorial work unless I get my GED. Until then, Association House helped me get a job through following the Career Planning curriculum. I am currently working at a janitorial company in Chicago. I got the job because I learned how to interview and to show confidence in myself to a potential employer. Best of all, even when I work the night shift, I can get off in the morning in time to get to the classes at Association House! I take two buses, and walk the rest of the way, and I am happy for the opportunity everyday to be in class. My mom is proud of my determination to get my GED. But even if no one is proud of me, I am proud of myself. Association House gave me courage to know that I can do anything in life I put my mind to - as long as I try. Thank you for supporting Association House so that someone like me can have the chance of a lifetime to get my GED.

90% of the children in the Child Welfare preventative care program Differential Response were able to remain safely in their own homes.

4,000 hours of direct

clinical help were provided to participants by the highly professional and caring staff of Behavioral Health Services.

90% of students in the

Out of School Time Program maintained or improved their math skills.

13,000 visits were made by community members to the Computer Lab, and nearly 200 adult students enrolled in computer classes.

Behavioral Health Services Caring and dedicated bilingual staff provide an array of culturally competent and pioneering prevention, treatment and educational services to persons with mental health needs, substance abuse and addictions, and developmental disabilities. Children, youth and adults find the help they deserve and the hope they need. Evidence based programs enhanced with strong partnerships with research and training institutions are offered in English and Spanish. Highly trained and licensed professional staff, including therapists, psychiatrists, nurses, certified community educators, case managers and counselors offer integrated care. We are a leader in innovative juvenile justice and violence prevention initiatives and services, which include case management, school based counseling and re-entry services for at risk and system involved youth. Many programs are covered by Medicaid and Medicare funding. Our very successful Healthy Lifestyle Program offers a national model of mental health, prevention and wellness activities for every age. We keep families healthy.

CHILD WELFARE SERVICES A team of professionals protect children in DCFS custody from abuse and neglect and work with families to create safe homes. As the only bilingual foster care provider in the community, our services include child advocacy, parenting education and coaching, home visitation, therapy and case management. Licensed child welfare staff care for children affected by trauma, and provides a coordinated network of child-centered, family-focused and community-based prevention services. We help keep children in their own homes with appropriate support, when possible. We find loving homes through guardianship and adoption, when needed. Our residential program La Casita, provides a nurturing, therapeutic home for boys with developmental disabilities, ages 13 to 18. A highly acclaimed new initiative, the Differential Response Program, prevents the unnecessary separation of children from their families by identifying family problems and risk factors and assisting families to obtain the education and support they need. We keep families safe.

SERVICEs & PROGRAMs El Cuarto AñO HIGH SCHOOL For many young people, El Cuarto Año High School is a second chance to earn a High School diploma. With small class sizes and a focus on individual learning, students find academic success at Association House, sometimes for the first time. El Cuarto Año operates in collaboration with Youth Connection Charter Schools, Alternative Schools Network and the Chicago Public Schools. The small school setting creates a creative and caring environment for re-enrolled students, and offers a 96% graduation rate for seniors. El Cuarto Año offers mentoring and tutoring services to ensure students are well prepared for graduation, and to help create pathways for college, trade school or viable employment. This year 56 students graduated from the program, overcoming great odds with hard work and high energy to make their dreams come true.

COMMUNITY SERVICES For more than a century, Association House has opened doors of opportunity to the community. Today our neighbors have access to a spectrum of adult education programs, now through a fully integrated Career Center. Employment programs, career-oriented education classes, along with specialty training courses in technology, allied health fields and customer service help move graduates from job readiness into job placement. Creating a continuum of services that promote financial security and economic self sufficiency helps our families advance the quality of their lives. A very successful Center for Working Families, ESL and GED classes, and Citizenship Education programs provide extended opportunities to our community. Programs are offered in both Spanish and English and many are conducted in a well equipped technology center. Along with a strong emphasis on closing the digital divide for our community members, we also offer support for life’s basic needs of food, clothing and public benefits screening.

OUT OF SCHOOL TIME PROGRAM For children and teens, having a safe place to gather when out of school is essential to our community. The Out of School Time program offers young students the opportunity for growth and self development, while learning to face neighborhood challenges. The program offers children and teens from ages 6-18 academic enrichment, parental involvement, health and nutrition programming, and structured activities to meet every interest. The program runs the full academic year, and extends hours during the summer months. The El Cuarto Año Family Literacy Program offers students that are parents and enrolled in the El Cuarto Año High School, the opportunity to enroll their children ages 0-5 for daily on site child care, early childhood education, and family literacy activities for children and their parents to do together. Parents are able to pursue their educational goals, while their children learn developmental skills to help build a brighter future.

All proceeds directly benefit the programs of Association House, and make possible our continued tradition of providing opportunity in the community. PREMIER SPONSORS

We extend our thanks to the 2011 Benefit Chairs, Ann and Tadd Ingles (Ernst & Young LLP) for creating a remarkable event through their strong leadership and hard work.
