T h e image on our 2011 cover shows the handing over of the College Blazer from Parade's Principal, Dr Moore (an Old Paradian), to Kayne Davies (7/L20) a new Paradian from Preston Campus. Parade's history is ongoing. Parade College's 140th year celebration statue is shown on the back of the Paradian. Created by Pauline Clayton, in consultation with staff and students and inspired by the words of Isaiah 49: 15 'See I have engraved you on the palms of my hands...' to reflect the growth, ongoing and mutual support of our students during their journey at Parade. To the class of 2011, staff and students who may be leaving Parade this year, we offer this blessing:

Edmund Rice Education Edmund Rice schools are subject to a regular cycle of review to validate their authenticity and their adhesion to the Charter for Edmund Rice schools. Parade College underwent this review in 2011 and was visited by a panel of educators from around the nation who interviewed parents, students and staff over a period of four days. The report to the school community was very heartening and very complimentary of our work as a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition. The Report states: "The Panel was impressed by the strong Catholic and inclusive nature of the College and the commitment to social justice evident through structures, programs and resource allocation. Parade is authentically inclusive in the way it effectively resources and provides a fullness of opportunity for students of a wide range of backgrounds, abilities and aspirations. It is a College truly living out the Edmund Rice charism." Faith and Action The various programs of Religious Education, liturgy and prayer, personal development, community outreach and action for social justice have continued to enrich the spiritual life of our students. Students continued to be encouraged to put faith into action through the community action programs and support for charitable causes in the local community and in the Edmund Rice
schools and ministries in Africa. The retreat program for Year n students is now firmly entrenched in its November time slot and all Year 12 students participated in a 'ministry' retreat during the year. Staff members again participated in a range of personal and spiritual renewal programs, and more staff members completed immersion experiences in India, Africa and outback Australia during the year and a group of staff undertook a pilgrimage to Ireland 'In the

Strategic Planning During the year the College has continued to respond to the directions developed out of the School Improvement Framework process of 2008, the major elements of which were built into the Mission Statement and planning documents. Our focus is always on facilitating the core work of the College of teaching and learning. We have continued to create pleasant learning environments with a high standard of cleanliness and comfort. We will revise the Mission Statement and allied planning documents next year ready for the 2013 - 2016 development period. Development in 2011
Edmund Rice Trade Training Centre with newly installed solar energy panels.
In line with our Mission Statement and our strategic planning processes a number of major projects have been undertaken this year. 1. The next phase of the College master plan for airconditioning was completed and the Edmund Rice complex and the Greening Auditorium are now fully air-conditioned.
Teaching and Learning We have continued to encourage students to identify and develop their talents as fully and broadly as possible, particularly in their academic studies. The EREA Review Report states: "The curriculum is diverse, as is the rich extra curricular program, the latter relying heavily on the work of a generous staff. The development tor a variety of pathways for students of different abilities and aspirations is commendable, as is the recent progress in ensuring that the move to curriculum diversity does not come at the cost of excellence for those seeking high academic results." We placed renewed emphasis on boys' ways of learning and enjoyed professional development with Dr Ian Lillico of the Boys First Foundation in this area. The Advanced Placement classes have challenged very able students to extend themselves and, in 2011, we further extended the staff and resources of the Educational Support Services to provide enhancement learning in many forms for those who need support in core subjects. The special Year 9 program, ExCEL, continued very successfully in its third year as did the Edmund Rice Pathways Program of vocational studies for Year 10 students as a prelude to V E T 6
2. The new all-weather sports facility was finally completed and named as Bunjil Park. This area includes a soccer pitch, athletics track and sprint straight, and 6 tennis courts. 3. The roll-out of computers under the Commonwealth Government D E R Program was completed and wi-fi capacity extended throughout the school. 4. A large system for harnessing solar energy was established on the roof of the Trade Centre. 5. Callan Court was extended and asphalted. 6. The master plan for maintenance and development of ovals and sports facilities was fully implemented. 7. A new front fence and gateways have been designed and construction has commenced. 8. The bus bays and parking area to the north of the College Drive have been fully redesigned and resurfaced. 9. A second teaching kitchen has been planned in detail. 10. Three College buses have been replaced.
and VCAL in Years 11 and 12. Our students continue to compare favourably with others in the national testing programs. Wider Curriculum Our students have continued to seize the opportunities for a well rounded education. We continued maximum involvement in the ACC competition and have achieved in the year a good number of premierships and runnerup placing in teams on both campuses. A special feature was achieving second place in the ACC Athletics Carnival. Our extensive community action program continues to provide learning opportunities for our students as they serve the elderly and disabled people in the local community. Our students have enthusiastically pursued the many traditional cultural offerings, and we continue to enjoy significant individual and team successes in public speaking, debating, drama, music and visual arts. Highlights included an excellent season of the musical The Wizard of Oz and a presentation of the play The Outsiders. The Year 10 students were involved in a series of regular dancing classes with Mercy College girls which ended with a social evening at Ivanhoc Town Hall.

Old Paradians' Association The Old Paradians' Association has continued to flourish under the energetic leadership of the new committee headed by Mr Lewis Derrico as President. Mr Tony De Bolfo, the CEO of the new Old Paradians' Association, has developed an extensive computer based communication network with former students. Three business breakfast events with Old Paradian speakers have taken place and the Gala Dinner in November was a great success. The Old Paradians' Association has fostered a merger with St Francis' Cricket Club to form the Old Paradians St Francis Cricket Club based at Garvey Oval. Support I thank the many people who have worked in support of the College in 2011. I am grateful to
Mr Trevor Corcoran (Chair) and the members of the College Board for their support and assistance. Thank you, too, to the various auxiliaries and committees which support the mission of the College, and to the College Leadership Team for its help throughout the year. I acknowledge the efforts of the staff in providing rich educational experiences and opportunities for our students as we strive towards our Mission Statement goal of an 'education which fosters the most wholesome development and growth ot all members'. 'Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world..' Nelson Mandela Reflecting on this year, I find myself being drawn to stories of courage, passion and inspiration which are part of our fabric. Our Catholic identity is reimagined and reshaped as we consider what it means to be a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition. We are called to face and respond to issues that can lead us towards a more just world. The E R E A Charterfor Catholic Schools in the Edmund Rice Tradition calls us to be faithful to these four touchstones: • Liberating Education • Inclusive Community • Gospel Spirituality •Justice and Solidarity Opportunity is a word often heard when people mention Parade College. A number of staff participated in immersion experiences in Africa and India. Some staff were also part of the Let's Talk Indigenous program. The College remains firmly committed to Indigenous issues. The Indigenous Reflection Space provides a place of spirituality and was enhanced this year with the addition of the iron bark poles and mosaics. Some of the highlights 2011: • Implementation of the 825,000 'Schools First Grant' to add value to our "Year 10 Science Program. • Enrichment Program conducted at Parade College as one of the initiatives of the Marketing and Development Committee with many Primary Schools participating in several learning projects at Preston Campus.
• Fathers' Committee with activities such as the Driver Education, Working Bees and the Health Forum. • Ladies' Auxiliary which held many events throughout the year such as the Trivia Night and managed to support many others with refreshments and hospitality. • Peace and Justice Days with Year 7 and Grade 516 students. • Parade College Art Show which featured a large collection of work by Indigenous artists. • Staff Appraisal Program continued to develop with the introduction of Peer Observation and the further development of the on line student feedback. • Staff Formation Day where staff spoke about their pilgrimage experiences followed by workshops including Spirituality and the Arts, Exploring Life giving Moments, Dadirri, Laughter Yoga, Walking the Labyrinth, Meditation, Life Coaching and Asylum Seekers. Possibilities emerge because of the generosity of so many people at Parade College. Special thanks to all who provide such committed service especially those with whom I have worked closely. Dr Denis Moore, with his unassuming manner, great generosity and acumen, continues to lead Parade College towards an even brighter future. With the departure of Ms Regina Rowan for long service leave, and being her replacement I wondered what second semester held for me. Student welfare, by implication, means looking after the health, happiness, prosperity etc. of 1878 students - a daunting task considering I had found raising my seven year old daughter a challenge in itself. Being made instantly comfortable by the particular, down to earth humour boys possess, a Year 12 student asked, "Are you going to wear a red coat as well?" a reference to one of the more striking pieces of apparel my predecessor used to wear. I assured him I had my own, distinctive wardrobe, he walked away with a knowing grin that said, "Yes, and we'll be watching you too!" Each boy undergoes his own, unique journey through secondary school with each year providing unique opportunities, challenges and experiences. In 2011, I was privileged to witness the taking up of challenges in the typically robust way of boys. In March I accompanied Year 12 boys on their Ministry Retreat. The boys spent time amongst Melbourne's homeless and underprivileged. Watching the boys strike up an easy familiarity with the homeless and destitute on Flinders St whilst offering a sandwich and coffee, I was reminded of the Gospel words, '... and I was hungry and you fed me...' Here were Parade boys 'bringing the kingdom' to others! In August the staff attended a professional development day hosted by Ian Lillicoe, an expert on boys' education. Ian offered pearls of wisdom including the fact that beneath the bravado and posturing of boys lays a very real vulnerability. This was evident when no Year 10 boys joined no Year 10 Mercy girls for 5 traditional dancing lessons, culminating in a ball at The Centre, Ivanhoe. Where was all the testosterone I wondered watching a group of shy, awkward, well mannered, enthusiastic boys learning the finer points of the Pride of Erin and Polka? September's Year 8 Father Son night provided another window into the journey boys undertake as they progress in adolescence and the importance of their fathers in their lives. Over ninety boys, their fathers/guardians shared feelings and thoughts about challenges facing them and special qualities each possessed, ending with advice given to each other. Open, honest and articulate were some of the impressions formed watching these boys speak to their Dads with wisdom belying their years. Student Welfare has many facets. I am fortunate to be part of a school where promoting the wellbeing of each student is as important as 'books and learning'. I would particularly like to thank
the Leadership Team, House Leaders' Team, Student Welfare Coordinator (Preston), Student Support Services Team, Ministry Team, two Transition Coordinators, Counselling Team and of course the 84 tutors without whom areas of welfare would be much poorer. A final 'best wishes' to all our Year 12 students - may the completion of one journey be the beginning of another exciting and fulfilling one!! It has been a big year in Curriculum at the College. A highlight occurred on March 10th, with a 'Shadow Day'. Staff members across the College were given the opportunity to visit other Colleges and observe best practice in a wide array of programs. It took much preparation to get this underway with some 230 placements. It was a very positive day for staff members who were warmly welcomed in all Colleges. Many new ideas have come from the day and will be implemented in coming months. Staff also felt affirmed in what they are currently doing, which in itself is very reassuring. Our boys can only benefit from this experience. Other big moves were the establishment of both the Literacy Improvement Team and e-Learning Team. Both teams hit the ground running making their presence felt. The Literacy team has raised the profile of Literacy throughout the College with posters greeting us wherever we go, the word of the day for staff and students, an analysis of the wording of examination questions, competitions, staff professional development, the introduction of a common reading period, and a really interactive 'Literacy Week.'
Left: Albert Maatouk (11/L09) and Mitchell Hose (12/Toj) during the Evening of Excellence.
The e-Learning team worked hard improving I C T skills of staff, by providing several workshops. They are trialling the use of iPads with Learning Area Leaders and recently extended this to other interested staff, to ascertain the value of using this technology in the classroom. Some in the industry would hope, in time, such technology will replace textbooks, delivering material in a more engaging and comprehensive way, with sound, video and greater scope for creativity
Other innovations included completing all subject selection processes online. This streamlined our process, with pleasing responses. It put the timetabling process ahead by several weeks and helped our 2012 planning. Once again our Evening ofExcellence was indeed excellent. It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase students' talents, and a highlight of the Academic year. This year was our best effort yet, reflecting the increasing use of technology and a wonderful array of acts. Our targets, as we move forward are the forthcoming Australian Curriculum and the innovative use of technology, an emphasis on improvement in Literacy and Numeracy, a refocussing on the principles of Boys' Education and further expanding our Advanced Placement Program. My thanks to David Broadbent (Director of Teaching and Learning), the Teaching and Learning Executive, Learning Area Leaders and the Subject teachers for their hard work this year, as we collectively worked to improve the outcomes for our students. I wish everyone a very enjoyable and restful break over the Christmas period. Mr Robert Inglis Assistant Principal - Teaching and Learning

It was a pleasure to open the new year with new computer rooms and a fresh coat of paint. The Campus was a welcoming sight for our fresh crop of Year 7 students. There was certainly an air of anticipation as both staff and students looked forward to the third year of Parade College Preston. The boys have been willing contributors across all year levels. The Year 7 and 8 students have participated in ACC Sport where a number of premierships have been won. They represented the College in Tournament of Minds and the school production of The Wizard of Oz. The Year 9 students have been terrific role models and have enthusiastically embraced ExCEL programs across both Campuses. We wish the Years 9s who are studying Year 10 at Bundoora good luck in their future VCE studies.

'Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) stands in solidarity with Indigenous people of Australia'{Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy, EREA, 2009-2012). In Term 3 2010, Parade participated in the Dare to Lead Collegial School Snapshot. Through a process which included a series of interviews between an external panel and Parade staff, students and parents-both Indigenous and non-Indigenous-the Snapshot provided an opportunity to examine our current programs and practice in Indigenous Education. The Snapshot Report, comprising commendations and recommendations, provides a firm foundation for future directions in Indigenous Education at Parade. This year, The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Team was established with one of its key responsibilities to address the recommendations arising from the Snapshot. Consisting of Marita Stretch, Mathew Lillyst, Ann Fahey (see centre), and Jenine Fogarty, the Team has met fortnightly. In addition to these meetings, members of the Team have visited other Catholic Secondary Colleges to learn about their Indigenous Programs and participated in Professional Learning on Indigenous Perspectives in the Curriculum. In July our Indigenous students and their families participated in the annual Secondary Students' Indigenous Day. Sitting at the entrance to Bunjil Park is the Indigenous Garden (see below). This Garden features art work created by Parade students along with indigenous plants. The name Bunjil was sanctioned by the Wurundjeri Tribe Land and Compensation Cultural Heritage Council Inc. We also applaud the significant achievements of two of our Indigenous students: • Jordan Hecker, Year 12, who was awarded the College's Indigenous Symbolic Torch for 2011. The College's current financial position is sound and reflects the effectiveness of the College's Leadership Team supported by strong administrative staff. During the year Edmund Rice Education Australia [EREA] conducted a review of Parade's operations in the light of the Charter for Catholic Schools in the Edmund Rice Tradition. Their resounding endorsement was a tremendous acknowledgement of the specialness of Parade, our leadership, staff, students and community. The Board undertook professional development sessions in the areas of good governance, EREA cultural characteristics and how they are applied at Parade, student welfare and computer technology in schools in 2012 and beyond. Board members have attended two EREA Board Chair gatherings with the Chairs and members of other E R E A schools in the Southern Region. These gatherings reinforce the vision of Edmund Rice through EREA.
The year has seen progress toward completion of the artificial sports surface and air conditioning of Mt Sion and ERC areas. Plans for the gateway and front fence are approved and the concept plans for the second teaching kitchen finalised to allow construction to commence next year. Eight new or revised College Policies were reviewed and approved. We welcomed Mrs Maria Alvaro to the Board at the start of the year. I am greatly appreciative to all Board members for their commitment and support throughout the year particularly Darryn Borg, Deputy Chair. It continues to be a privilege to be involved with Dr Moore, who is an inspiring and visionary Principal. Finally, I wish our students fulfilment and achievement for the future, particularly the graduating class of 2011 and thank their parents for entrusting their sons to Parade.

Education today is a complex, vast, and urgent task. This complexity today risks making us lose what is essential, that is, theformation of the human person in its totality, particularly as regards the religious and spiritual dimension. • Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education, Circular Letter to the Presidents of Bishops' Conferences on Religious Education in Schools, May 2009 In endeavouring to be faithful to Parade College's moniker as a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice Tradition, the Ministry and Mission Team endeavours to balance the complexity, vastness and urgency of what it sees as it key goals of: • A relevant Religious Education curriculum • A commitment to justice through outreach, advocacy and fundraising • Deeping a Catholic faith and spirituality • Building a sense of community amongst students, staff and parents
There have been some memorable events and initiatives: The Cage activity, World's Greatest Shave, commemorating N A I D O C and Refugee weeks, Project Compassion, Edmund Rice Feast Day and Solidarity Fortnight, St Albans Tutoring, Father / Son and Mother / Son activities and the Brekky Van. A chance to step back and refocus. How can this be done? The Excel CHILL TIME PROGRAM offered students opportunities to practise relaxed composure, by centring, and focussing. In Year 7 students participated in Rock and Water, which promoted the practice of being grounded and centred. Chill Time built on this. Students were taught basic breathing patterns promoting the skill of centring and attentiveness. Sounds simple, but perseverance was needed. Mrs Jessica Frisina with Y9 ExCEL students at Lin Son Buddhist Temple, Reservoir.
Meditation had its systematic beginnings in religious traditions. The practice has been appropriated in mainstream society as something of value for living with centredness and calm focus. The use of Karate Kid clips offered examples of young Daniel, guided by Mr Miyagi, to use this breathing skill. Daniel's life was like a dog's breakfast. Focussing was his need. On excursions, students experienced the rush of the City and the oases within the business district including Birrarung Marr, Fitzroy Gardens, the Landy Sculpture, St Patrick's and St Francis'. On other days, students visited a Buddhist Temple and a Cistercian Catholic Monastery and were lead in meditation by the Monks.
The Christian method of meditation often makes use of a Mantra, a phrase or short expression. The one used by Chill Time participants was Maranatha. The Aramaic word means Come Lord Jesus. It offers a stance that says, 'I am attentive to the present moment.' It dates back to the first century when Christians were under threat of persecution for being baptised and practising their faith. Students were encouraged to be aware of practices in their lives that cause a lack of focus and being grounded. Poor organisation, lateness for sessions, poor planning, inadequate equipment, a scattered approach to life, can be unsettling and disturbing for oneself. With some foresight and discipline, these settings for tension and rush can be anticipated and avoided. Overall, the Chill Time practice of meditation offered the possibility of a deeper connection in the present moment with oneself, others and the Mystery holding each of us.

'Be the change you wish to see in the world.' I am sure we have all seen countless posters, calendars and coffee table books mimicking the great Mahatma Gandhi's words. Every Monday evening a dedicated group of Parade boys make their way to the Edmund Rice Tutoring Centre in St Albans to do this very thing. The centre aims to assist refugee youths, between the ages of 6 and 18, living in St Albans to ensure they are able to gain the best results from their schooling and integrate into Australian society. When Parade boys arrive, they are paired with a student and spend the hour working and chatting with their partner. Each week is another opportunity to meet and work with someone new, to learn their story and hear their thoughts. These students relish opportunities to have someone assist and guide them. Their thirst for knowledge is inspiring. The centre, and its volunteers, help to ensure these young students do not become disengaged or overwhelmed by their schooling, though the centre does so much more. The centre is also an opportunity for students, from St Albans and Parade, to come together, learn about each other and create friendships. Mixing of cultures is helping to reshape and change not only our own thoughts and prejudices, but perhaps those of our wider communities. These boys are true leaders who are following in the steps of Edmund Rice through their service.
Arabic when they don't understand English. This really motivates me to go down to the centre every week as I know I'm making a difference. I also tutor as it is an opportunity for me to give back to other kids what school has given me. I would really encourage other students to get involved as it will help improve their knowledge and their understanding of different tasks as well as improve their social skills. Joshua Graf, Year 12/B01. Ifind it very rewarding when I actually make an improvement to someone's learning. I've been able to establish a good connection with a Tear 11 girl whom I am able to help with her Maths Methods work. She often complains her teacher is unable to figure out her questions, so it is really satisfying when I am able to help her. I also enjoy hearing some of the inspirational stories the children have. One girl I tutored was not able to attend Tear 7 and 8 as she wasfleeing her country. Being able to help her was a realprivilege. I believe that attending St Albans is very personally rewarding as it makes you understand how privileged we are to learn. I have found this experience has inspired me more in my final year and would encourage everyone to give it a go.
Parade's students are also supporting the Edmund Rice Centre through a book drive. The Community Action Centre has been leading this initiative. A big thank you must go to the Community Action Team and those students who donated. Thoughts from the volunteers... Thomas Dawson %ar 12/B09 I've been interested in social justice issuesfor a long time and keen to participate in allprograms the school offers. I have been involved with St Albansfor the past} years and become more and more involved over this time. I am fairly confident with English and Maths and enjoy helping younger students whose problem Ifind easier to solve. It is great to see the satisfaction some of the students get when they complete their homework by themselves, especially after many hours of frustration. It's a great way of improving your skills while helping others and brings a lot ofselfsatisfaction. Dawoud Kodi Year 11/H05. I really enjoy tutoring as I am able to meet new kids and build relationships with them. The thing I enjoy the most is being able to translate something to the kids in

Some months ago, the College applied for and received a Munnar Grant from Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) to develop an Indigenous Garden Space. The project took considerable time to plan as it required some careful investigation and design. Mr Michael Van Dort assisted with creating some wonderful landscaping ideas. At the same time, the College invited Mrs Delsie Lillyst from the Catholic Education Office to visit and comment on the plans as it was very important to us that we were respectful of our Indigenous heritage. Delsie was quite overcome with the magnitude of the project and the attention we had given to the design. Mrsjeanette Shapadovski, MrTonyTeo and the Visual Arts Department spent many months designing iron bark poles and mosaics which pick up some of our important Indigenous history. As the project grew, the Fathers' Committee gave a generous donation and the Ladies' Auxiliary provided some tiling. Today, the space is one where students and staff can come to reflect. Our reconciliation activities take place in this area. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags fly proudly in this space which captures the attention of all who enter Parade College.

Hold fast to your traditions boys! Be proud of who you are and where you have come from! Prepare for your future! Understand there is a world beyond Parade College! These messages are engrained in our Tenete program, which has developed into a diverse and rewarding course. The lessons covered include setting goals for the future, understanding our Christian Brother and Indigenous Heritage, and developing skills for the GAT. An integral part of Tenete is the Ministry Retreat Program. This is a two day immersion style retreat designed for our Year 12 students and facilitated by the members of the Edmund Rice Youth Ministry Team based at Amberley. These retreats provided a unique opportunity for the 24
students to engage with groups of disadvantaged and marginalised people. It also aims to help students gain insights and deepen their understanding of the pressing s o c i i justice needs of our time, The Tenete program culminates in a Eucharistic Celebration. The theme for this year was based on the students' vision for their future. The students spent time creating vision boards. These boards where to be a visual representation of how their successful and happy life would appear once they had left Parade College.

We visited the two largest and poorest slums in Kenya where the Brothers tackled education, health care and community needs, from the large oasis like schools and clinics of Ruben, to the smaller scale programs that catered for disabled children at the Mary Rice Centre. We visited orphanages, rural schools and small humanitarian organisations with few resources, and yet so much to offer in resilience, respect and hope. We taught, we learnt, we played, and we reflected, it was a life changing experience. For every heartbreaking story we heard, we saw many more inspiring works of good will. EREA INDIGENOUS IMMERSION The Let's Talk Indigenous Immersion offered by Edmund Rice Education Australia is a program aimed at establishing an authentic and engaging dialogue with Aboriginal communities in New South Wales. In May20ii, Martin McGlue and I were privileged to join together with seventeen other teachers from schools around Australia on an incredibly inspiring and rewarding journey that lasted 6 days. Along the way we were fortunate enough to meet elders whom we affectionately came to know as 'aunty' or 'uncle', visited some devastatingly haunted locations such as the site of the Myall Creek massacre and listened to the stories so willingly offered to us. Led by two incredibly strong women in Cassandra Gibbs and Julieanne Manson, Gamilaraay and Arabana women respectively, the immersion prompted thoughtful reflection, valuable discussion and a powerful invitation to be part of these indigenous communities to work towards a truly just and inclusive future. Taking part in a sacred Smoking Ceremony, walking amongst the overgrown remnants of the Brewarrina Mission and visiting the ancient fishing traps were all moments of deep spiritual potency and ones we will keep with us. While the people we met acknowledged the pain and injustices of the past, they were unmistakeably focused on hope. The hospitality and friendship we were offered by the students and communities of Walgett, Godooga, Moree and Brewarrina have inspired us to move forward in the true spirit of reconciliation in partnership with the traditional owners of this land and we have been forever changed by it.

Nurturing compassion and community is a major focus of the Parade College Community Action Program. Throughout the history of Community Action at Parade, students of all year levels have been encouraged to participate in a range of experiences that enable them to develop an awareness and understanding of those in need-this year has been no exception! Parade students have been involved in community service in so many different ways. The enthusiasm and readiness of students to take on challenges makes me very proud. I have witnessed many become advocates for change - changing attitudes and stereotypes and change through action. There isn't the space to list them all but the pictures tell the story.
Thank you to Cate Livingston, Darrell Cruse and Kath O'Connor whose passion and commitment continue to make Community Action a vibrant and important part of Parade's culture.
All of these wonderful activities were realised because of the amazing commitment of the teaching staff, the generous assistance of the administration staff and the grounds staff, the tireless efforts of Rosa Girardin and the Library staff in supporting our fundraising.

The Year 10 students of Parade College took part in the Red Cross Youth Challenge this year and their contribution to our community was outstanding. Students were asked to complete a project that would contribute to their community. The response from the boys was amazing. Rivergum Theatre became a cinema for our aged care community with residents from Vasey House, Blue Cross, Kia Ora and Villa Maria being treated to morning tea and a movie. For many residents it was their first movie day in over twenty years. The biggest morning tea was another highlight of the program with over $500 being raised by Mr Briant's students. Adrien Fasel-Murphy and James Tadd spent many hours organising fun filled weekly activities for students at Araluen. The Staff was full of praise for these boys. Other projects included removing graffiti from the wall of elderly residents in Fairfield. Here our boys learned about the damage, cost and stress graffiti can cause to residents in their community. Barbara McCabe from Vasey House, a great supporter of our program, has been working with some of our boys on creating Talking Books for dementia patients - another exciting project our students are involved in. Lucas Zugaro and Luke Iuele added an International flavour to our program with a project that culminated in raising almost S3000 for Bahay Tuluyan, a home for street kids in the Philippines. Over 100 students took part in a seminar, featuring two street kids from Bahay Tuluyan. This was an amazing effort. It is a project they hope will become part of every boy's education at Parade College. Primary school sports' programs, reading and working with aged care residents, a wheelchair basketball session, social soccer for refugees, working with adults with intellectual disabilities, a vegetable garden at Villa Maria Aged Care and teaching computer skills in the local community have all been part of our projects in 2011.
The efforts of our students have made a real difference to the lives of many in our community and for those efforts both our boys and their parents should be proud.

It is difficult to believe another year has passed so quickly. So much has happened, in what is a vibrant learning community at Parade. 2011 saw the establishment of two new committees in the College, namely our e-Learning team and also our Literacy Improvement Team. Both teams hit the ground running. The Literacy team, capably coordinated by Anne Dalmau, has certainly raised the profile of Literacy at the College, with posters everywhere one looks, the word of the day, Literacy Week reading activities, analysis of the wording on V C E papers and the list goes on. The team's work is making a big difference. Our e-Learning team has once again been very active. They has established a trial on the use of iPads in the College. Our entire Teaching and Learning Team has been provided with an iPad each and more recently other teachers have had the opportunity to be provided with an iPad to sample the software that is available to teachers and to see how they might be incorporated into our teaching practice. We have reviewed our GET REAL policy as well as
our Homestudy policy, in addition to having all of our Subject selection processes online. This has certainly streamlined the whole process. On August 10, both the staff and parents were treated to a visit from Ian Lillico, the Director of the Boys Forward Institute. Ian spoke of the transition from boyhood into manhood, and gave both the staff and parents some excellent strategies to improve their teaching/nurturing of the young men in their care. We will continue to reflect on Ian's message as the year progresses.

2011 has seen a great deal of consolidation with the five major areas starting to complement each other with courses being offered across the curriculum. These five areas are Information Technology, Food Technology, Materials Technology, V E T (Vocational Education and Training) and V C A L (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning). It is wonderful to see students engaged in the building trades and achieving success and pride in their work. The Try a Trade courses help students decide which is their preferred option. The other areas of Electronics, Wood Working, Sheet Metal, IT and Food Technology also give students an opportunity to expand their knowledge base.

It has been an exciting year in Health and Physical Education at Parade College. 2011, a year of great change, much of which is still taking place as I write, Firstly, the introduction of the High Performance Program, which has a foot in both the ACC Sport and Physical Education Camps, has been the biggest shift in our curriculum offerings in many years, creating great excitement with both staff and students. This has given students the opportunity to be selected for high performance training programs directly linked to their representative sport. The program is designed to further enhance the students' sporting involvement in representing Parade whilst also providing them with an excellent Physical Education Program which takes a deeper look into their chosen sport/s from a theoretical perspective. Secondly, as a Physical Education Teacher, it gives me great pleasure to walk the College grounds. With the new water harvesting program we have first class turf facilities. With our new all-weather synthetic surface and existing excellent facilities, Parade College Students will have access to some of the best resources a school could hope for.
As Physical Education Teachers this has allowed our team to develop new courses to maximise the use of these facilities and the educational benefits for our students. Starting this year we are able to offer our students practical classes in Hockey, Tennis and Athletics. This is a huge step forward, especially for our High Performance classes. These facilities will all be used for ACC training, helping to bring Parade College back to being the sporting powerhouse it once was. In such a big year, with so much taking place, it is important for me to thank the Health and Physical Education Staff for their fantastic work and amazing support. Year 8 students studied the context and experience of Jesus of Nazareth and the growth of the early community. Ms Berglez and Ms Dourios spoke of recent experiences in Kenya with the Edmund Rice Network. The excursion to St Albans, research work on CARITAS, St Vincent de Paul and Edmund Rice Foundation extended awareness and appreciation of our call to service and mission. %ar 9 students researched Books of the First Testament and explored good and evil through images in the media and film. A liturgy was
celebrated around the theme of forgiveness and hope in our human journey. A unit on past and contemporary Prophets drew themes of responsibility and commitment together. The Year 10 R E course in 2011 developed into a dynamic and authentic course. In Semester 1 students explored Aboriginal Spirituality, themes in Mark's Gospel and implemented projects for Community Action. The projects students undertook included hosting a Movie Morning, cleaning up graffiti in the streets, hosting the 2nd Biggest Morning Tea, creating picture books for elderly people and contributing to the Big Issue. In Semester 2 Year 10 students chose to either study V C E subjects Religion & Society or Texts & Traditions. The students who undertook Religion & Society had the opportunity to visit the Mosque in Preston or the Melbourne Lin Son Buddhist Temple in Reservoir. They also experienced an interfaith afternoon conversation with three young people of different faiths. The Text & Traditions students became art critics for an afternoon when they visited the National Gallery and explored various religious artworks. Year n students completed Unit 2 of either Religion & Society or Texts & Traditions. There was a focus on the way different religions approach ethical issues where students participated in a World Religion Morning. Unfortunately some students discovered some of their choices; decisions and efforts in the past year were not effective or positive. This is where I came into the picture. Working with the House Leaders and staff I tried to be a positive yet firm influence in students' lives and assist wherever I could. More students came to understand my role as being supportive, affirming and committed to improvement and advancement. It was refreshing and affirming that they have sought me out and made me work for them to improve their educational experience. Students welcomed my involvement in their lives in 42
many ways including, through the classroom, talking with them in the yard and when they came to my office for help or guidance. The VCE cohort was offered the challenge to 'UNLOCK TOUR FUTURE. YOU ARE THE KEY!!!' as a motto in 2011. Most took up the challenge. Congratulations to all students who pushed themselves to thrive and achieve. For 2012 I offer the following 'THE WORLD A WA ITS. CHA LLENGE YOUR LIMITS!' The door to my office is always open for assistance and counsel. With the help of Blessed Edmund Rice and God's help, we as the Parade Community can continue to move forward and work together to achieve all that can be achieved.

CANON
It has been another very busy and exciting year in English at Parade. Each year presents its own unique challenges and 2011 has been no different in this respect. I wish to thank all the dedicated teachers who have given their time, energy and insight into making the year very successful on numerous fronts. We have made big advances in our approach to teaching writing and been innovators in technology use in the classroom. We have converted more and more students to reading (parents are very grateful for this) and we have promoted oral literacy to excellent effect. We are very lucky to have so many enthusiastic and highly skilled teachers in this faculty. I usually like to take a creative approach to Faculty Reports such as this because it is in creativity that we truly grow as learners and as educators. With the licence to create come the tendency to question and the capacity for reflection. We want
LEARNING
all our English students to be creatively involved in using their language, in appreciating its use by others in literature, film, the media, and oratory and so on. We want them to acquire the skills and inclination to question, even challenge the society they find themselves in, to be reflecting on their involvement in society in order to make a meaningful contribution. What happens in English classes around the country, I believe, plays a big part in shaping our attitudes to the world and the people around us. The functioning, humanist society, if it ever truly arrives, will be shaped by creative, happy people who can communicate effectively, who are inquirers into life who will not simply accept the status quo just because it is the status quo. We have brought this spirit to English classes at Parade. Let the great blue sky Come crashing down; at least our Words will defy it.

"Alcohol remains Australia's second most harmful drug after tobacco. It's a major cause of preventable death and illness in Australia, killing 60 and hospitalising 1500 people every week" (2011, J. Rogerson, ChiefExecutive Office Australian Drug Foundation) I am pleased to be writing my third report as Drug Education Convenor at Parade. Over the past year Parade continued working towards empowering our students with the right knowledge, attitudes and skills to prevent drug related problems. With alarming mortality and morbidity statistics on tobacco and alcohol we purposefully geared the majority of our lessons, from Year 7 to 12, with a main focus on these two drugs.
Drug Ed Posters are displayed in all Classrooms throughout the College.
A highlight this year was the Year 9 Alcohol Awareness session (Warner Awareness Education.) This age appropriate session focused on educating students about the risks and effects of binge drinking as a sixty minute interactive, informative and engaging incursion. It also provided students with strategies on how to deal with peer group pressure. The presenter was great, using a humorous approach which captured the attention of the students and appealed to them on their level.
drug education. Addressing drug related matters can be both challenging and rewarding. I am pleased with the skill and style with which our staff have taken on the challenge. Parade College was selected to be part of the School Community Approaches to Drug Education (SCADE) Project, whereby the College received a grant for the implementation and delivery of our Drug Education Program. Recognising the excellent work we are doing, it provides opportunities for future planning and implementation. I have no doubt the year ahead will be just as rewarding. I would like to invite the entire school community to get involved in Drug Education at Parade and hope families will work together in reducing the harms associated with drugs.

Throughout 2011, students had the opportunity to experience a range of science activities. They competed in Australia wide Science competitions from Year 7 - V C E levels, participated in Bronze CREST investigations and underwent expert incursions. Science this year has been 'explosive' literally! We celebrated Open Day with a 'bang' at Preston and Science week celebrated Chemistry with explosive experiments and cool liquid nitrogen demonstrations. 2011 has also been a year of many firsts in Science. We qualified in the University of Melbourne Brain Bee Challenge, commenced a new Science ExCEL program, implemented new curriculum, such as Year 9 Forensics, and developed the N A B 'Seeds of Science' Program. Last year Parade in collaboration with La Trobe University won a Schools First grant to engage young boys in Science education. The program Seeds ofScience commenced as a trial last November and this year expanded in Term 3 with weekly tasters in Science. Every week a select group of Year 10 boys participated in hands on, cutting edge Science in a University environment. Boys visited the Biology, Chemistry and Physics
departments and worked on real research projects with academics and scientists. Highlights in each faculty have included: • In Biology students conducted biotechnology and microbiology experiments. • In Chemistry students conducted forensic investigations and explored why smaller is better in a nanotechnology laboratory • And last but not least, in Physics, students from Parade were the first secondary students to control the 8200,000,000 Synchrotron X-ray machine in a real protein diffraction experiment! Seeds ofScience has provided over a hundred students and some staff the opportunity to see how Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Information Technology work together. Students used equipment found only in leading research facilities and explored scientific ideas outside of a standard classroom. Feedback and the willingness to return have proven how successful this program has been. Science at Parade is awesome!

email, facebook, i-Phone, tablet, laptop, i-Pad, Google, myspace, Tumblr., twitter, internet, intranet, online, portal, digital revolution, digital footprint, digital citizen, identity theft, texting social networking Digital technology is a major part of our lives in the twenty-first century. Some of us can't imagine life without it; others fondly remember life before mobile phones, laptop and email. Parade has made e-learning a major focus, establishing a team to explore and expand use of technology for teaching. The team has focused on two primary areas in 2011 - provision of staff e-learning workshops and the acquisition of new technology, in particular electronic 'tablets' with associated training. Staff workshops - staff participated in several e-learning workshops in Semester i. These included creating and using an educational website in Wikispaces and/or using the College Intranet to communicate with students online. Staff members are currently using such sites to provide course materials and to discuss subject-specific topics with their students through discussion forums. Homework is also able to be logged in such spaces and students can submit work through an online 'drop box'. It is anticipated that all V C E staff will use an online space for their class from 2012. New Technology - staff participated in an i-Pad trial in Semester 2, with staff from both campuses keen to try out this electronic teaching tool. Staff are investigating the use of the i-Pad in the classroom as a teaching and learning device. At this stage the i-Pad is not intended as a replacement of existing technology such as laptops, but rather to provide access to the vast range of educational applications that are available.
Computer technology at Parade.
Cyber Safety - the team has also been considering the impact of our students' safety when online. It is intended that the College newsletter and website will soon contain helpful advice for parents and students about safety in an increasingly digital world.

This has been a successful and busy year for the Visual Arts and Drama Learning Area. The commencement of a new Artist in Residence Program using OldParadians has been an interesting concept and an important one, with Parade Students continuing their association with the College after graduation. The program has enabled our current students to benefit from the skills and knowledge of practicing artists, Michael La Dow andjaze Dubois, who successfully worked in this role. The art students were eager to participate in a range of art projects. We also saw the establishment of the Old Paradians'Artist Society (OPAS.) The Society was set up to promote and connect Old Paradians who are pursuing a career or interest in the Visual or Performing Arts. We now have a membership of 38 Old Paradians. The Drama production of The Outsiders was successfully staged to full houses. Parade students were given the opportunity to participate in all aspects of the theatre including acting, set design, and technical production. The Student Art Exhibition showcased the talents of our students. The opening night was well attended by students, parents, relatives and friends. There was a wide range of artworks on display. Images of the Student Art Exhibition and many other art activities can be viewed on the College Website. I would like to congratulate all the Visual Arts, Media and Drama Teachers in the Visual Arts and Drama Learning Area for a successful year and thank them for their hard work and dedication.

Yes, many of you are challenged by the learning of Italian, Japanese or French. And some of you take hold of the challenge, and extend yourself academically in ways you never thought you would. This year, we are again involved in three International School Trips - exchanges to and from Takada High School, and a school trip to Italy coming up over the Summer Holidays. While there has been no planned trip to France, by time of publishing three boys from the 2011 Year 11 French class will have spent time on individual exchanges to France. Exchange boys to France, William Gilmore, David Butler and Sean Towers with French exchange student Emeric Desjeux.
David Butler stayed in Rouen. Sean Towers is staying in Clermont-Ferrand with Emeric Desjeux who stayed with Sean on exchange duringjune through August this year. William Gilmore will no doubt impress the basketball team on his exchange in France, although at time of printing his precise destination was not known. Parade College was also fortunate to host Alessandro Davi, cousin to Kristian Doddato for several weeks. Alessandro and Kristian had not seen each other since Kristian last visited Italy 10 years ago.
Pietro Angeli of Year 10 was successful in winning the Dante Alighieri Italian Poetry Competition, a state wide award. Pietro was well supported by his peers with three boys receiving a certificate of PREGIO indicating a high quality performance. The LOTE Teaching Staff would like to give a special thanks to all the volunteers who have come into the school to assist in senior conversation classes and additional areas: Mr Arnaud Lebrun (Mauricien, for French), Ms Sara Comanducci and Father Mario De Rosa (Italian), and Ms Sayuri Onaka and Ms Charmi Egodagamage (Japanese). These assistants (often voluntary) have a big influence on our students and help provide an extra role model in the language classroom.

commerce report MR PAUL
CHEEL
At the time of writing this report, there was uncertainty in the business world: the European Sovereign debt crisis remains a major concern, the share market was experiencing violent swings, talk of interest rate rises changed to the likelihood of a drop in interest rates, the Australian dollar dropped 8% in just over a week, retail sales were struggling and the property market was cooling. These are some of the issues investigated and discussed in commerce subjects at Parade. The Year 12 Business Management excursion to CUB to investigate management practices, was expanded to incorporate a visit to IKEA. This proved most beneficial. Excursions to various markets, shopping centres, courts and parliament are part of the ExCEL program, legal studies and middle school commerce. The popularity of the commerce subjects remains high, especially Small Business at Year 10 and Business Management in the VCE. The introduction of the National Curriculum, with history and geography to become compulsory, will lessen student choice and may impact upon the number of students choosing the commerce subjects.
This year, Year 10 Careers classes were reduced from 8 periods per cycle for a semester, to 1 period a week for the entire year, a reduction of almost fifty per cent. This has created a few teething problems, however, the boys have responded well to the change. Students were given the opportunity to apply for a Tax File Number through these classes and this will be continued next year. Technology continues to provide many positive benefits for our students. The challenges continue to relate to ensuring students have a sound understanding of the basics and they develop the skills to read, analyse and interpret economic data and events. The Commerce Department places a high priority on students reading newspapers and watching Current Affairs programs.

The Literacy Improvement Team is a new initiative at Parade. Its objective is to build on the work of our teachers and raise the profile and standard of literacy. The world of opportunities outside our College expands for our boys as their literacy improves. The following are only some of the team's focus areas. In Tenete classes, Year 12 students were prepared for the General Assessment Test, which is used to moderate student internal assessment tasks and final examination scores. In Year 7, students were introduced to a colour coding system to assist with turning research into the student's own words. Teachers were prepared for N A P L A N testing in May and language demands in units of Science and Media were examined. Teachers from various faculties have worked with the team in analysing the effectiveness of assessment questions. Creating a visually rich literacy environment for staff and students is an important part of our brief but the Literacy Improvement Team believes that literacy does not always mean serious schoolwork. Humour often relies on strong literacy skills. The staffroom walls are covered with humorous and challenging messages about literacy. Circulating the Word of the Day gave rise to much discussion about language and staff responses revealed strong literacy skills and a great sense of humour. Interesting language facts, spelling rules and hints for good writing are building the literacy environment outside the classroom. Literacy and Numeracy Week was peppered with puzzles and prizes in and out of classes. The literacy highlight of the week occurred on Wednesday 31st of August when Year 7 and 8 joined schools all over Australia in celebrating the joy of reading in the Read for Australia. In period 6 a quietness descended across both campuses as our boys read, in rooms filled with quiet music or relaxing fragrances. Not taking it for Granted... Sitting in a meeting with a group of salesmen from Apple recently, I heard one of them say, "No one ever uses encyclopaedias today." He meant everyone looks up information online and does not use books anymore. Is that true? Certainly it looks to be our future. It struck me some young today will never have to lug around huge volumes from library shelves, drop them on tables, try and remember the alphabet and carefully (or not) turn thin pages to find a reference which is hopefully there. They won't have to - it will all be there at the touch of a button or finger (if using an IPad or IPhone). Just look up Wikipedia or online sources of information. So much information is now available so quickly without moving from desks or chairs. Students will not have to know what a library looks like or where information is to be found. No need to know the Dewey Decimal System or how knowledge is organised. No need for large print - just enlarge the print. No need to write a summary or an essay because someone has already done that for you. At worse you might have to pay for it. Summaries of arguments of complex issues are all simplified, easily digestible and all the same. Why reinvent the wheel once it has been written once? No need to fret because a deadline is approaching and you have not done research or no idea what to write. There will always be someone on a social networking site to suggest something or console you. This means there is no need to think for yourself or rely on your own resources. So this is all good isn't it?
development. We have used simulator software to support and develop skills required for the efficient use of the Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) Calculators. After a very successful year for our senior students we have continued to provide support through our very experienced team of V C E teachers and look forward to continued success at VCE.
Clearly, I do not think so. The Internet, computers and mobile electronic devices provide a wonderful opportunity for those who are educated and discriminate in when and how to use them. Too often students do not want to do the hard work that all real study involves. Young people do not have a long past from which to draw their experience. They can assume it was always this way when they can so easily access knowledge. They do not have the skills or judgement when trying to use that information. This is why we have schools.
As we move forward we want to pursue positive outcomes for all students. We challenge students to do the best they can and to make use of the resources that are provided to them. As we all take up this challenge we strive to make our students numerate members of the broader community and contribute in making them well rounded individuals.

2011 provided another significant year in the development of Pathways programs at Parade College. This year Preston Campus housed Year 10 Edmund Rice Pathways Program and both Year n Intermediate and Year 12 Senior V C A L for the first time. Year 12 V C A L moved from Bundoora Campus to Preston, enabling all Pathways and V C A L students to have classes at Preston. Moving to Preston will further enhance opportunities for our students. The program continues to offer access to individual case management, varied vocationally oriented programs, particularly through the Edmund Rice Trade Training Centre, excellent facilities to support these programs and many opportunities for personal growth and development. The College invested significantly to ensure our 'hands on' learners have the very best opportunities to commence a pathway towards employment or further education and training. The V C A L program continued to grow offering students an alternative pathway to the VCE. Forty six students commenced the program in Year 11 and thirty three at Year 12. All students were able to access industry based training in various fields. The Edmund Rice Trade Training Centre was able to give students a variety of industry based training on site proving a wonderful addition to our program. Electrical, building and construction, plumbing and furnishings and bricklaying were common. Sport and recreation, hospitality and Music Industry were also available to V C A L students at Bundoora Campus. A number of students were able to combine their V C A L Certificate with School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeships (SBATs). This allowed students opportunities to commence apprenticeships, access training and complete a senior secondary certificate.
We were able to develop what we call the V C A L Forum. Many people were invited to the College to share experiences and assist with student learning. Employers, apprenticeship and employment agencies, past students engaged in apprenticeships, management consultants, trade union officials - all featured in the forum throughout the year. We are aiming to grow this initiative in future years. The Edmund Rice Pathways Program went into its 4th year with thirty two Year 10 boys able to access our alternative program. This has a strong focus on vocational learning, including, furnishings, building and construction, electro technology and bricklaying, vocation preparation, community service and sport and recreation. Extended work experience was also a key feature. This program is a wonderful example of the College's commitment to provide students with an inclusive, relevant and practical education. An important part of the Year 10 program was giving students an opportunity to experience, appreciate and understand the importance of service to the community. As part of our Religious Education program boys were placed in community agencies, aged care facilities, local primary schools and special development schools on a weekly basis through Terms 2 and 3. Projects were conducted and important contributions made. The agencies were most appreciative of the efforts of our boys. Jake Triulcio

Our Transition Program for 2011 has been a very busy yet rewarding year. Our Program starts at the end of the previous year with some of our current Year 7s visiting our Catholic Feeder schools talking to Year 6 students about transition, providing advice, experience and reassurance. We had over seventeen primary schools visit Parade and spend a series of half days experiencing Science Programs, Community Action sessions, Computer workshops and Sports Activities. Responses from some of the Year 5s • I can't wait until I go to Parade - Julian from St Thomas Moore's, Hadfield • I am really ready to go to secondary school Paul from St Oliver Plunkett's, Pascoe Vale
In March, a number of staff interested in transition visited Mt Lilydale Mercy College to look at innovative ways to assist new students with organisation, use of planners and keeping up to date with assignment tasks. Some of the ideas gleaned from this day have already been utilised with students and have made a significant impact.
Giovanna and Ricardo Bonaddio (B12) celebrate their stories.
Our transition cycle begins again in October with a new group of Year 7s beginning the Transition Program, starting their new journey as Paradians in the Edmund Rice Tradition.
20 n Year 7 Orientation Day.
The Mother and Son evening for Year 7 boys in March and the Father/Mentor Son Program for Year 8 boys in September were both well attended and allowed a wonderful opportunity for Paradian families. Responses from some of our Mums and Dads • What have you done with my son? He started the year as a boy and now I can see him growing so quickly into a young man. • I thought I was the only mum in the world who felt anxious about my son starting secondary school. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to meet other mothers who felt the same. • It was great as a dad to have the opportunity to spend time with my son. It was great timing being around Father's day. The night brought a tear to my eye when we shared our treasured items.

In February we welcomed our new Year 7 students, who joined us from the surrounding primary schools. Our newest Paradians settled in very well. This was due to the welcoming and inclusive nature of our Campus Community. We look forward to our 4th year and the many experiences and challenges this will bring. We would like to thank the Leadership Team, Staff, Students and families, whose generous contributions make our Preston Campus such a great place to be.
We are happy to say 2011 has been a year of growth with the introduction of our first Year 12 students. These students have completed their studies at Parade and are now embarking on their chosen career. We would like to thank them for their contribution and leadership whilst at the College.

& MR J I M
SEYMOUR
It is hard to believe Bodkin House has resided in our new home on level two of the Mt Sion Building for 2 years. Staff and students have contributed to making the surroundings colourful and welcoming. The corridors and classrooms are a wonderful celebration of life as a Bodkin person at Parade. The 2011 Prefect Group has been particularly enthusiastic throughout the year. With the assistance of the House Committee, they have staged several entertaining assemblies. These showcased the musical talents of the Bodkin Super Band, and highlighted special sporting and academic achievements of their fellow Paradians. A big thank you to all Prefects and Members of the House Committee for their fine efforts. The College Production was again amazing! It was wonderful to see our own Joseph Lotesto shine in his role as the Lion. Congratulations to all the boys who participated in this wonderful annual event. Lachlan Denny showed enormous personal and physical strength in completing his Melbourne to Sydney ride. More recently, Lachlan was lucky enough to be invited by the Victorian Premier to attend the welcoming party for Cadel Evans, an
event he will surely never forget. We would like to encourage all Bodkin boys to take advantage of the many different extra curricular activities the College has to offer to ensure they have a most enriching and memorable experience during their time at Parade. A special farewell to the 2011 Year 12 Bodkin group! We wish them all the best in their endeavours as they embark on life beyond the safe and familiar surrounds of Parade. During semester 2, Christine Ireland and Sandra Morello, have stepped in as Tutor Teachers for Angela Meddi and Andrew Walker, who both took well deserved long service leave. We would like to thank all our Tutor Teachers who continue to put a lot of work into the pastoral care of the boys in their Tutor Groups. We would also like to thank Dr Moore, the Leadership Team and the whole House Leaders group for their support throughout the year.

GARGANIS
YEAR
12/B03
As Bodkin House Captain in 2011, it has been a huge honour to work with all of the brilliant young men within our House. Holding the position of captain allowed me to be part of the lives of Bodkin students. This meant having the privilage of watching these young men mature, forming strong bonds with one another. I have also witnessed the amazing qualities and talents we have to offer as a house. Many Bodkin boys represented the College in numerous ways, ranging from A C C sports to drama productions and assisting the community through such activities as the Blood Bank and St Albans tutoring. Through these events the boys have displayed community spirit, and also brought out the fortitude of our house. In the future, we will strive to increase participation in the extensive range of activities the College has to offer, and bring the prestigious Ambrose Treacy Trophy back to Bodkin House. The charity, Asylum Seekers, was supported by Bodkin House this year. Students participated in fundraising activities and donated money through
w
events such as the Solidarity Walk. This was one of Bodkin's most successful charity fundraisers. Through these efforts we raised over $2700. I sincerely thank all boys who showed their commendable character and donated generously to charities being supported by the entire school. Big thanks to the students who assisted in the various activities within Bodkin throughout the year. On behalf of the students of Bodkin House, I take this opportunity to thank both Mr Seymour and Miss Dourios for their invaluable encouragement, guidance and support in every event throughout the year. I would also like to show appreciation to all Bodkin House prefects and members of the House committee for their fantastic support this year. Their commitment and devotion to Bodkin are truly admirable and demonstrates what our House stands for.

YEAR
12/B02
Besides the academic and sporting talent that flourishes amongst those of Bodkin House, there are students who have demonstrated exceptional determination and initiative in both curricular and extra-curricular activities. In recognition of these students, awards are given at every House Assembly acknowledging the boys' achievements. Introduced only this year, The Man of Initiative and Determination award is presented to students in Bodkin House who have displayed: courage, persistence, and enthusiasm - the essential characteristics which form the basis of mature individuals. One of the recipients of this title was Lachlan Denny, who in an act of selflessness, rode interstate on a bike, raising much needed funds for charity. This amazing effort lead to Lauchy meeting Cadel Evans at a recent state welcoming celebration.

Also awarded with this title was Lahiru Abeysinghe. His determination to learn more than what was taught in school resulted in him receiving an Accounting Cadetship at PricewaterhouseCoopers, the second largest professional services firm in the world. The talents and skills of the students in Bodkin House are endless and limitless. The award only encourages a greater display of initiative and determination, inspiring each student to be the best he can be.

HUGHES
hughes house leaders' report M R R O B E R T G A N D O L F O & MS S A R A H
HARVEY
What does it mean to be a part of Hughes House? This can be summed up in three words: leadership, collegiality and compassion. In 2011 the Prefects and House Committee members led the House with tremendous ambition and vigor. They very ably contributed towards our house assemblies, fundraising and the running of our Hughes Celebration Day! Leadership was demonstrated at every level of Hughes House. A special thanks to Daniel Fahey (College Captain), Christy Kulendran (Hughes House Captain), Jordan Hecker (Academic Prefect), Roshal Perera (Social Justice Prefect), and Benjamin Seymour (Student Activities Prefect) for their commitment and direction in Hughes House. Hughes students supported each other and rallied together with enormous energy in their various activities; Teary Camp at Lake Dewar, Tear 8 Activities Week and Tear 9 Outdoor Adventure Camp in the Otways. Students showed enthusiasm on their placements in Tear 10 Work Experience and Community Action Programs, receiving positive feedback from participating organisations. Our senior students should be congratulated on the mature approach shown on their Tear 11 Leadership Camp, and Tear 12 Tenete Retreats, not to mention the enormous success of the Tear 7 if 12 Buddy Program. A credit to all Hughes boys! The spirit of community compassion is alive in Hughes House! Both staff members and the student body have contributed in a range of ways to help others in need. This year, members of Hughes House were involved in raising awareness and funds for the Edmund Rice Camps during Founder's Fortnight. The Hughes community stood proud when presenting a cheque to Mr Mark Monahan at the Term 3 House Assembly as their charitable efforts were received with great appreciation. The success of this year has not been possible without the continued support of the hard working Hughes Tutor Teachers and staff members of both campuses whose dedication, energy and encouragement is a vital part of the Hughes House Spirit. Thank you to Ms Sarah Harvey who replaced Mr Craig Athaide as Hughes Upper House Leader in Semester 2 whilst Craig stepped up as Assistant Principal - Student Welfare. Thank you also to Dr Moore and the Leadership Team for your direction and support in 2011.

and fought so hard. This was evident in Eddie's fortnight where Hughes stood out amongst all the houses, productively organising events to raise the most money for the Edmund Rice Camps. The generosity, persistence and humility witnessed by these gentlemen reflect the House we are and will always be. Credit must be given to the teachers who have tirelessly helped shape Hughes into the solid house it has become. Lead by the well organised and enthusiastic duo Mr Athaide and Mr Gandolfo who, along with the tutor teachers and staff, have encouraged students to rise to the challenge by
going beyond what once appeared as the border of possibility. Due to stepping into another role, Mr Athaide was replaced by Ms Harvey in Semester 2. Ms Harvey, a positive female role model for the students, was embraced by all. I wish Hughes and its 2012 Captain the best of luck and hope for yet another successful year. It has been an honour to serve this House that has provided so much for me over the last six years. GO HUGHES!!!!!

HUSSEY
w
It is with a sense of great pride that we as the Leaders of Lynch House are able to report on another tremendously successful and rewarding year. The Ambrose Treacy Cup represents the House Group that has displayed the greatest student involvement in College life for the past year. In 2011 Lynch House consolidated on the successes of 2010 by winning this prestigious award for a second consecutive year. This achievement was in no small way due to the dedication, commitment and genuine compassionate response by both Lynch staff and students alike, who were guided overall by the Lynch House Committee. The call to be Men of Fire clearly echoed in the mind of many of our Lynch students as we inducted, with pomp and ceremony, our largest ever cohort of student leaders into the House Committee.
• Bahay Tuluyan Foundation based in the Philippines • Premier's Reading Challenge • Youth Health Forum at the Royal Children's Hospital • Blood Bank Donations • School Production • Community, House and Campus Liturgies • Academic, Sporting and Cultural Representation These successes were in part made possible due to the continual encouragement and commitment of the Lynch House Committee lead by House Captain Adrian Agpasa.
The service displayed by our founder, Brother John Barnabas Lynch, served as a platform for the Lynch House Members to respond in action in the context of our contemporary society.
On a personal level we appreciate and highly value the good will, pastoral support and sense of community present amongst Lynch House staff - Tutors, Teaching and Administration. Their passion and real desire to achieve the best possible outcome for each student within Lynch House is to be commended.
It is fitting that achievements include but were not limited to: • Lower House Athletics Carnival • Project Compassion Fundraising
Lynch Lower House Students, winners of the 2011 Lower House Athletics Carnival.

2011 has been a tremendously exciting year for those in Lynch House. Being in this role was a learning curve for me as, considering I was not part of the Parade journey for as long as most of my Year 12 peers, I was constantly discovering new Below: Preston Campus Lynch House Students. things about Lynch. The presence of a robust House spirit and the participation, dedication and talent from the boys and teachers across this house was something I learnt and grew to admire throughout this year.
normal life. It was exciting to see the enthusiasm when raising awareness about our charity began in Founder's Fortnight and continued throughout 2011. From the Year 7 win at the Athletics Carnival to the Premier's Reading Challenge, our house certainly had an enormous number of achievements. All our achievements couldn't be better symbolised than by our back to back win of the Ambrose Treacy Cup. This showed the impressive and consistent effort each of the Lynch boys contributed. Huge congratulations should go to each one of them. I cannot imagine something else that would cause such heightened emotions of pride and loyalty to the House as the Cup does. I would like to say a big thank you to Mr Hussey and Mr Houlihan for their dedication and enthusiasm and to Ms Rowan and Mr Athaide for their mentoring. I would also like to thank the House Committee, Tutor Teachers, the Prefect Team and especially my Vice Captain, Ryan Nelson, for their support and assistance throughout 2011. It has been a privilege standing beside them, leading this house.

Every year presents a new set of challenges with a new combination of the Year 11 and 12 students forming the top team at the College. This year the anticipation was higher than most with a favourable draw for the ACC season and the opportunity to play in the first ever E R E A Basketball Tournament in Sydney in the July holidays, prior to the season (a separate report deals with this historic event.)
previously by 19 points. With a near full strength team, in a pressure packed game, we were able to win by 10 points. The B team defeated St Bede's by a big margin, remaining undefeated.
Beside the A C C we entered the McDonald's Cup Tournament to pick the Victorian top basketball team for the National Championships. Our co captain, Sam Gilmore, was unavailable due to T A C football commitments. The team performed well to finish equal 9th in the State, but was unsuccessful in qualifying for the top 8 section of the tournament.
As anticipated, the Grand Final for the As was close, with Whitefriar's winning in the last few minutes 57-50 with some excellent 3 point shooting. The Bs won 54-36 v St Bernard's for the third B Premiership in a row and remaining undefeated for the year.
Coach: Mr Phil Ashworth Results: Second and Premiers
When all players were available for the start of the A C C season both the A and B teams were undefeated prior to the away game at Mazenod College. This game followed the McDonald's Cup and with two key players unavailable the A team lost. The B team won again. In the last A C C game we had a must win game against St Bede's and both teams were able to produce the best team games of the season winning comfortably at home. Going into the Semi Finals, the A team needed to defeat Mazenod who had defeated us two weeks

In the first year of High Performance for Basketball the Year 9 ACC group showed improvement from previous years. Both teams reached the playoffs for 3rd v 4th places. Credit must be given to the players in the way they approached the season and with their receptiveness to learn new team concepts. This group trained twice weekly, and showed improvement each week. The Captains, Andrew Burgess and David Kelly, each led their respective A and B teams. All players were willing to work together to play some great individual and team basketball. After a difficult fixture of playing some of the higher ranked teams early in the season the teams did not take a backward step. Although losing a couple of close, tough matches they were very competitive. This tough spirit proved to be a positive throughout the season. In the 3rd v 4th playoffs the A team was pitted against a hot shooting St Bede's and was unable to recover from an early deficit to lose by about 15 points and finished in 4th place. B team proved to be too strong for De La Salle's combination to run out winners also by about 15 points to finish in 3rd place. Thanks to all players for being coachable. Good luck in your future basketball pursuits at Parade and outside the College.

YEAR
I I / B i o
At the beginning of Term 3, I worked with Mr Williams as Basketball Coach. This meant I had the opportunity to work with Year 7 students. I had to get myself organised before I could coach. For me to do that I booked the gym with the school and organised an hour of try outs. I did three minutes warm up of jogging, ten minutes of drills such as shooting, layup, dribbling, ten minutes defences such as slides, pitter pat, five minutes crouching, 20 minutes playing and finished our boys with a three minute cool down. I organised our Year 7 students and explained to them the time and date and what to bring to try outs. I also told them what to expect on game day so that they could be organised and ready to play! Team line up Team name: Parade Preston or Preston Magic A Team: Centres: Zac Polglaze Power forwards: Beau Moorcroft, Tinashe Machemedse Small forwards: Lawrence Pereira Shooting guards: Dut Dut, Ben Augustus Point guards: Dylan Potter, Kyle Green BTeam: Centres: Jesse Gazzola, Tiernan Roche Power forwards: Matthew Melia, Jacob Babic Small forwards: Jackson Robson, Lachlan McKirdy Shooting guards: Emerson Gibilisco, Salvatore Locastro Point guards: Cooper Robson, Isaiah Miller Any injured or sick players will help the teams by helping with the score board or score sheet. Rules of the teams: All players must give it 100% in all games and trainings. They must respect each other, Coach Wol Dut and Mr Williams. They must also have respect for other teams and referees whether we win or lose. All players must have a good attitude towards basketball and Parade College. They must be cooperative and they must listen. The aim of 2011 Year 7 Basketball team is to succeed, be included and most importantly have fun but still behave as we are still representing Parade College, Preston and ourselves. Any ignorant or unacceptable behaviour will not be tolerated and players will have to face consequences. Consequences for immature behaviour: • Running more at training • Missing games • Push ups and sit ups at training • If acting immaturely during a game they will be put on the bench • Taken out of the team Wol Dut and Dylan Potter's goals and expectations on behalf of the Year 7 Basketball Teams: • To win the championship • To have fun • To enjoy ourselves • Get fitter • Develop new skills • Learn to work together as a team • To achieve leadership • To share as a team • Make friends • Become better Paradians • To be remembered in the Parade history book 200

clay shooting report ° DANIEL FRANCO
YEAR
9/H12
The Parade boys attended the 2011 Annual Schools Clay Target Shooting Championships, held at the Frankston Gun Club. The competitors acquitted themselves well. Everyone had fun and the event proved to be a success once again. Congratulations to all the teachers and members of the Frankston Gun Club who donated their time.
A big thank you to Mr Peter Boulos and Stephen Rondinelli for organising the day. Hopefully Parade can be represented annually in this event.
The Parade College Team consisted of students ranging from Year 7 to Year 12. All were on their best behaviour and obviously well drilled on their fire arm safety
Well done to all who attended, and a special thanks to all the parents who turned up to support the students. Well done boys!

snowsports report MR J I M
SEYMOUR
What promised to be a great season with early large dumps of snow for our Trial Weekend turned out to be a very short lived one because unusually early Spring conditions quickly melted the snow that had fallen earlier. However, after months of preparation in the early hours of each Thursday morning and a training weekend a month before the main event, the Parade Team headed to Mt. Buller to participate in the Subaru Interschools Snowsports Championships from 20-23 August. With four new members on the team, the results they posted certainly look good for future development as we say thank you and farewell to our Captain Ben Seymour and Vice-Captain Simon Higham as well as the other Year 12s who have served the team so well during their time at Parade. It was a pleasure to work with and accompany the boys to Mt Buller and I congratulate them for their behavior and the way they conducted themselves throughout the program. The results below are very pleasing indeed and reflect the boys' dedicated approach to the lengthy 'dryland training' program, their willingness to participate and their competitiveness, considering their limited time on the snow compared to several other schools. Division 1 Alpine (Years 11 & 12 - 1 6 7 competitors) Shane Higham - 56th Simon Higham - 68th Callum Bibby - 76th Kayden Johnson - 100th Daniel Goodison - 102nd Ben Seymour - 112th Ben Spokes - D N F (The 2 Ben's crashed on one of their runs) Team Placing - 1 4 out of 3 1 teams.
Division 2 Alpine (Years q & ro -172 competitors) Jarrod Matthews - 33rd Alex Huzjak - 102nd Kieran Fahey-nth James Mclndoe - 127th Ben Goodison - 131st Team Placing - 23 out of 40 teams. Division 3 Alpine (Years 7 & 8 - 21s competitors) Lucas Hergert - 123rd William Needham - D N F (Crashed on his second run) Division 1 Snowboard (Years 11 & 12 - 88 competitors) Justin Clark - 46th Dayne Smith - 53rd Jesse Chiminello - 67th Team Placing - 21 out of 26 teams Ben Procter - 52nd Yet again, the Team has been kindly supported by Rino Grollo and his organization. It would be difficult to field a team without his ongoing generosity and I thank him sincerely for such a long association with Parade. I would also like to thank Eddie and Therese Higham who supplied our team hoodies and for their long standing support. This is their final year as Simon and Shane graduate. The Highams have had four boys involved in the program - all since Year 7! Lastly, I would like to thank Mr. Seckold and Mr. Hussey for their assistance with the training and transportation of the team.

MATTHEW LUNARDI YEAR 7/H20 & ALEX TRANTINO YEAR 8/B20 In Term 3, the ACC Year 8 Table Tennis Team at Preston played numerous games with all the players trying their very best. Although we lost every game, we came back with a few sets showing our abilities. In the first game we did not play as well as we should have because some members were new to the sport. In the later games we started to find our strengths and weaknesses. Our Coach was Ms Mein. She was a fantastic Coach and a very good inspiration to the team. She organised games and tactics to help us and used her own time to organise a training session.
yJ e a r ,8ta/b table te tennis
If it were not for Ms Mein we would probably have lost every game without even putting a score on the margin. Our best game was when we played St Bernard's College; although we did not come out with a win we still won a few games. A special thank you to Ms Mein for all her time in helping us to achieve our goals. Thanks to all the Preston Year 8 Table Tennis Team for a great season. We hope we come out with a win in our next season.

In many respects, 2011 was a year of consolidation for the Old Paradians' Association.
Front Cover: Old Paradians' latest Hall of Fame Inductee. Michael Pratt. Below: Old Paradians' Association President, Lew Derrico, speaking at a function at the Treacy Conference Centre.
The Association set about building its contacts, furthering its website and database functionality, and extending its calendar of social functions most notably the reunions of the 1961, '71, '81, 91, 2001 and 2006 final year students; the traditional Luncheons so capably facilitated by Bill Dunne and Keith Sharkie, and the more recent Business Breakfasts inaugurated by the current committee. A total of three breakfasts were held at Visy Park through the course of the year, with the AFL Corporate Affairs Manager Brian Walsh, When The Lion Roars Managing Director Pat Prendergast and Equiset Managing Director Lorenz Grollo all giving generously of their time to deliver outstanding keynote addresses. An honour board acknowledging the names of all Paradians involved in active conflict during the Second World War has also been earmarked for the Hickey Foyer. At the time of writing, extensive cross referencing of former students' names with those listed in the Australian War
Memorial directory is well underway, with more than 400 'unknown' Parade soldiers so far identified - notwithstanding the more than 300 soldiers previously listed in the 1946 edition of The Paradian. Amongst the more significant developments through the course of 2011 was the establishment of an online business directory of Old Paradians for Old Paradians at www.oIdparadians.com.au, as a further means of strengthening the old boys' network. An updated Memorandum of Articles and Association was also drafted with the crucial input of Committeeman and lawyer Pat Dunell. In closing, I would like to thank Parade College Principal, Dr Moore and Assistant Principal, Organisation, Andy Kuppe for their ongoing support and encouragement, together with our energetic President, Lewis Derrico and all members of the Association Committee whose selfless dedication to the task reflects their genuine empathy for the cause.

The identity of the first Parade College student to complete his matriculation was revealed in 2011, more than 130 years after the event. Lieutenant Colonel Henry William Dunkley, born in Richmond on September 11,1861 was schooled at the Old Bluestone Pile in East Melbourne presumably through the late 1860s mid 1870s. He is best remembered for his selfless contributions to sporting and charitable institutions in the old western Victorian gold mining town of St Arnaud. Lieut Col Dunkley's long lost connection with the College was uncovered in an obituary dated Monday, July 1, 1935, which appeared in the nowdefunct The Argus newspaper and reads in part... Lieut Colonel Henry William Dunkley, barrister, died at his home at St Arnaud yesterday from a heart affliction. He had been ill for several weeks. The late Lieut Colonel Dunkley, who was aged 74 years, was educated at Christian Brothers' College, Victoria Parade, Scotch College, and the University of Melbourne. He practised as a barrister in equity at Selborne Chambers, and later bought a practice at StArnaud. He was keenly interested in military affairs, and was associated with the 73rd
Infantry Victorian Rangers as commanding officer, retiring in 1914. He was returning officerfor the Nelson Province and the electoral district ofKara Kara-Borung and was treasurer of the StArnaud District Hospital, judge of the StArnaud Turf Club, aformer president of the Australian Natives'Association, a member of the high school advisory council\ legal adviser to the St Arnaud Borough Council, the water trust, and the Kara Kara Shire. He leaves a widow and three children. On the strength of the newspaper discovery, the Old Paradians' Association followed up with Hugh Radford, the principal of Radford Legal in St Arnaud. Mr Radford said of'The Colonel' "... his service to his community was influenced greatly through his education at Parade College."

The Old Paradians'Association is all about opportunity... and back in June, on the strength of last year's well received College Captains gathering, it convened a gathering of Parade's First X V I I I Football Captains at theTreacy Conference Centre in Parkville. On field leaders in attendance included Peter Venier (1949), Kevin Rickard (1953), Brian Beers (1957), Shane Bond (1972) and more recent captains such as Marcus Yeo (2001), Ryan Ewing (2005) and Gavan Connolly (2006) considered it a rare honour to rub shoulders with their predecessors.
in 1899, through to the Magpies' currently listed premiership player, Ben Johnson. The tabled 'Jock' Mcl lale was named Coach of the illustrious Parade outfit, which also included such luminaries as the late Owen Abrahams, Peter Bedford, Peter McKenna and Sergio Silvagni.
So captivated was Daniel Sage (1999) that he made good his promise to assist the Old Paradians' Amateur Football Club by donning his boots on match days through the latter part of the season.
A further highlight of the Gala Event was the induction of Michael Pratt GC (Parade 1972) into the Old Paradians 'Association Hall ofFame. M ichael is the first living Inductee of the Hall, established in 2010, in acknowledgement of the outstanding contributions to society of those who formerly attended the College.
In furthering the Australian Rules theme, the Association saw fit to name its greatest Team of VFL/AFL footballers, ex Parade, at a Gala Event staged at The Ballroom, Bell City, in November. The coveted 22 man Team, dubbed The Pride of Parade, was selected from a squad of 82 players, from R.T. Rush, who debuted for Collingwood
Soon, a panel depicting Michael's story, a tale of tremendous courage amid extreme danger, will feature prominently alongside those of his six fellow Inductees in the Hickey Foyer at the College's Bundoora Campus.
