Around the Club Dear Westwood Members, As I write my second newsletter to you, we are fully engaged in our annual budgeting process. We’ve changed up this process a bit this year, working even more closely with members of our Finance Committee and Board to develop a strong financial guideline for the upcoming fiscal year. It is imperative that we produce a well-built, accurate, and realistic budget in order to continue our success as a club. I feel confident that we have set great financial goals, identified areas of savings and allocated proper funding to upkeep and improve the club. There’s a lot of excitement at Westwood as we move into fall and our next fiscal year. There have been quite a bit of improvements over the last 45 days as well. A new diving board has been installed, studio A was repaired and is now back open, the dining room has been repainted in a new fresh color, new walk-in refrigerators and freezer have been installed, and the lights on courts A-D have been replaced. The feedback I have received on these projects has been very positive. Thank you to everyone who attended our first “Breakfast with the GM” at the end of July. I am looking to host more events like this where members can come, ask questions and get an update on club operations, decisions, changes, etc. I am a big proponent of open communication and I hope you will be able to join me for one or more of these events. Look for more information coming, but remember, my door is always open to our members. I am really looking forward to officially experiencing my first Club Challenge. I popped over for a bit last year when I was with the Dominion Club and I must say I was impressed with the scope of the event and how smoothly managed it all was. Hosting hundreds of people, all day long, for three days is quite the undertaking but the Westwood staff and the RTA handled it expertly. I also enjoyed seeing the camaraderie, competition and team unity showcased at Club Challenge. I am excited to be a part of the Westwood team, to cheer on our players, and to watch some great tennis. Good luck Team Westwood! I look forward to seeing you around the club. Best, Dan Moscar

CONGRATS WESTWOOD

WAVES 2018 JRAC CHAMPS Westwood Waves: So much more than a swim team!

A question I’m often asked is: “What makes the Westwood Waves such a successful summer league swim team?” Having won 5 straight, and 6 of the last 7, James River Aquatic Club (JRAC) Championships, it is true that the Waves are a force to be reckoned with. To the casual observer, one might think the answer to the question is: “Well, they have a stockpile of uber-talented, elite level swimmers.” However, I argue that this is just a very small piece to the puzzle. Is it vital to have elite swimmers for the Waves? Absolutely, but, it is far from what makes us successful. A lot of teams in the JRAC have elite swimmers, but, few have ever reached the consistency of success that we have. So, why is that? The Waves have swimmers of all ages (4 to 18) and ability levels (beginner to D1 bound) that are committed and immensely dedicated to the team. Take our 13 graduating seniors for example, they combined for 121 summers swimming for the Waves and only 3 swam for a year-round swim club this past year. The beauty of the league (JRAC) we swim in is that swimmers of all ability levels are valuable. In fact, I’d argue the beginner swimmers and the strictly “summer league” swimmers are as valuable, if not more so, than the elite, year-round swimmers we have. There are four speed categories that swimmers can compete in (Novice, Regular, X, and XX). A 4 year-old, beginning swimmer in the Novice speed category can score as many points for the team as the 18 year-old, Division 1 bound, college swimmer in the XX speed category. Thus, there is TRULY a spot for EVERYONE on this team: from the casual exerciser to the league record holding, year-round swimmer. Every swimmer counts. However, what I love most about this team goes far beyond winning and points scored. The culture that has been bred on the Westwood Waves pool deck over the years is special and never taken for granted. We are not just “a summer swim team”. On this team, lifelong friendships are made, valuable life lessons of success, responding to failure, commitment and perseverance are learned, self confidence is built, and having fun is held above all else. Go Waves! Sincerely, Bucka Watson Head Swim Team Coach

TIPS from the Pros: Short cuts on the singles court! Last round we talked about Singles 101: Deep balls go crosscourt. Ready for this? Singles 201: Short balls go down the line… Boom! Done. Why go down the line on the short ball? Geometry 101: Law of Similar Triangles The closer you are to the vertex (your opponents point of contact), the shorter the distance to the path of the ball. • If you hit down the line from the baseline, they have 27 feet to pass you. • If you hit down the line from the service line, they have 20 feet to pass you. YOU JUST SAVED 7 FEET! DISCLAIMER: this assumes you are standing ON the singles alley. If you hit the down the line from the service line and cut the angle at a perpendicular, they have even LESS freedom to pass you. YOU JUST SAVED 7+ FEET! DISCLAIMER: this assumes you are standing ON the singles alley. Where is the Surface Area? If you approach cross court, your opponent can go around you. They can pass you without you being involved. • If they pass down the line, you are on the wrong side of the ball and can’t intercept the path. • If you run to cover the down the line, you will be wrong footed and they can hit the ball behind you. If you approach down the line, your opponent has to go through you. That means you get a play on the volley. • If they pass down the line, you are already on that side to block the surface area. • If they pass cross court, you can cut off and intercept the angle… Remember Geometry 101? Hence, what have we learned? Here’s a key code to help with your approach shot: DOWN THE LINE vs CROSSCOURT. So, by hitting the SHORT ball DOWN THE LINE/CROSSCOURT you… cover the GREATEST/SMALLEST surface area. Just remember…. Green means go! Cheers Miguel

SO MUCH FUN!

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Played as singles or doubles, players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated ball, similar to a Wiffle Ball, over a net. The sport shares features of other racquet sports, with the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules somewhat similar to tennis. Plus, IT’S SO MUCH FUN! We have added two more nights to our racquet sports social calendar, just for pickleball! September 14: We will be hosting a short pickleball “how to” clinic at 5:30 p.m., followed by casual play at 6:00 p.m. Cost is $15 per player and includes snacks, beverages and play. Sign up online. October 13: Put your pickleball skills to the test! A true round robin format, competing for points and prizes! Cost is $15 per player and includes snacks, beverages, and play. Sign up online.

TIPS from the Pros: Playing different types of surfaces. As summer comes to an end, we look forward to the school year and a new session of fall clinics. Being that juniors will be asked to play on both hard and clay surfaces here at Westwood, and while away for tournaments, I wanted to provide tips on how juniors can play their best on both types of courts. First off, not all tournaments will be played on hard courts. Some clubs have only clay courts, and the game can be extremely different. The hard court in some ways is rougher on the body, but easier from a movement standpoint. Players can stop and block their feet, changing directions on a dime. The clay court, as it is more slippery, presents more challenges. The players can’t stop as easily and the momentum usually carries them further and makes the stopand-go more difficult to control. Additionally, for the same reasons, it benefits or hurts a player, clay also has its advantages and disadvantages for certain shots. For instance, a drop shot can be much more beneficial on clay than it is on hard court. Not only may it take the player a little longer to get to the ball, but the spin is much more effective on the clay. Players also need to understand that there is a difference between indoor clay courts and outdoors clay courts. Indoors, the cement underneath the clay helps aggressive game styles, so the first shots matter. On the contrary, outdoor clay courts demand more patience and movement. What can immediately make you a better player on clay? Clay court tennis shoes. You will notice on the bottom of clay court tennis shoes, it is one consistent herringbone pattern along the entire bottom of the shoe. The pattern has to be tighter in order to better grip the clay. Playing on hard courts? All-court or hard court shoes have a wider design pattern, often of little dots or wide herringbone patterns, not the tight pattern of the clay court shoe. All players should make a practice of playing on clay, as it will help to develop a better movement, more patience, and a stronger sense for tactical patterns. With Westwood having the best clay courts in the state, there is no better time to try! We look forward to seeing you on the courts.
