October 28, 2017

Keiro Kai Keiro Kai is an annual event in Japantown that honors and pays tribute to the elderly. In Japanese, “kei” means to honor or respect and “ro” means elderly. In Japan, Keiro Day is celebrated on September 15th and is a national holiday where many events take place to honor the elderly. In the past, the San Jose Japantown community has carried on this tradition by holding its Keiro Kai event in October. This year we had five special centenarians to recognize! The first was Henry Uyeda, who is 103-years old. Shigeko Ikegami and Chiyoko Nerio turned 102-years old. Three 101-year olds included Kimiko Teramoto, Bernice Koga, and Reiko Uyehara. We could have honored Sadako Saito at 99-years old, but she was too young! We invited 164 seniors that were over 90-years old and out of the 164 seniors, 21 seniors were over 100-years old! A very special thank you to the Thursday Arts and

Executive Director Message by Ryan Kawamoto

A

s we have already begun 2018, I want to wish everyone a wonderful new year filled with good health and prosperity (which I hope you interpret prosperity to mean a lot of future laughs and joy at Yu-Ai Kai)!

I also wanted to take this opportunity to look back at 2017 and thank our dedicated and hard-working board of directors, amazing staff, and volunteers - many of whom dedicated countless hours of service in the name of helping our senior community in addition to our incredibly generous donors and wonderful participants this past year. 2017 was a huge year for Yu-Ai Kai as we were able to elevate our services by purchasing new equipment, including upgraded speakers on our third floor at our main building (and so if you see some of our afternoon movie attendees with their hair blown back from the sound, you’ll know why). We also purchased two gently-used vehicles for our transportation and Neighborhood Meals on Wheels (and so again if you see some of our transportation service participants with their hair blown back, it could be because our drivers rolled down the windows or maybe it could still be from the new speakers from the movie... or both). We were also able to obtain some top-notch analysts to assess how we can better improve our overall agency (which hopefully did not affect anyone’s hair). In many ways, this elevation was in collaboration with the generosity of multiple grants through the Japanese American Community Foundation and the Taproot Foundation. I’d also like to state a special thank you to Union Bank, the Mitsui USA Foundation, and the Sobrato Family Foundation for their incredible ongoing support of our programming.

Yu-Ai Kai Board of Directors Presidents: Rickey Ono and Tori Ueda-Sakurai Vice Presidents: Jane Kawasaki and Kenzo Kimura Secretary: Randy Shingai Treasurer: Alan Minato Past President: Ben Katai Garrett Fujii Tamami Hansen Richard Konda Calvin Louie Ronald Matsui Shigeyuki Murota Naomi Nakano-Matsumoto Noriko Ray Judy Sugiyama Marian Suhama Steve Yamamoto The Board of Directors meets on the 3rd Thursday at 6:30 pm at Yu-Ai Kai.

We also held our first annual anniversary dinner (not to be confused with our five-year anniversary galas) - which in recent conversations, attendees tend to recall the aweinspiring dessert bar, fun atmosphere, and a really, really, really long speech from a certain long-winded Executive Director.

Yu-Ai Kai’s Mission Statement To promote healthy aging, successful independent living and to advocate for all seniors while embracing Japanese American tradition.

Yu-Ai Kai launched a new lecture series - where we discovered the biggest unifier is food (not a huge shock to me as a self-proclaimed professional eater) – and our 1960s-themed launch had the planning committee learning how to make cheese balls!

Vision Statement To be a leader in empowering seniors to age well and thrive.

We also had record attendance at our volunteer recognition luncheon due the success of the Warriors (and our Warriors-theme) and a very strong increase in our nutrition program and activity numbers due to all of your support! Yu-Ai Kai also continued multiple community partnerships like our annual free flu shot clinic with San Jose State University nursing students (who again, much like last year, joked that I should get multiple flu shots so that they could practice more). We also said goodbye but not farewell to many in the Yu-Ai Kai community including our amazing cook for the past 27 years, Yoshiko Kobayashi, who in many ways with Louise Hosoda, our former nutrition program manager, built our nutrition program to be the model for the county (and I credit both of them for making life-changing meatloaf). I also want to mention a goodbye but not farewell to some of the best volunteers at Yu-Ai Kai, Tsukasa and Yoko Kobashi, who even from afar in Japan, have agreed to continue to translate this newsletter into Japanese. I look forward to their hopefully prompt and potential return back to San Jose. On that note, the biggest lesson that Tsukasa and Yoko have given me that I hope to remember, especially for this upcoming year, is to appreciate the wonderful community that we all share and that I take for granted every day. I also hope you too can take a moment to recognize how blessed we all are to have each other, we thank you in advance for visiting Yu-Ai Kai in the spirit of appreciating this wonderful community.

Looking for an Instructor

Beginning Japanese Conversation We are looking for an instructor to teach a beginning Japanese conversation class, preferably early evening and during the week. If you are interested, please call Julie Hubbard at (408 ) 294-2505 ext. 12.

Beginning English Conversation Yu-Ai Kai is so fortunate to have found a new instructor to take Yoko Kobashi’s place for the beginning/ intermediate English class. Yoko Sells has decided to continue this important class to teach our seniors (mainly Japanese-speaking) and to help them learn English. Grant Kondo originally started this class, and when his class got too big, he asked Yoko Kobashi to teach a beginner class, while he taught the intermediate class. Yoko Sells’ experience as an instructor started when she volun

teered at the University of Texas in San Antonio’s Japanese Conversation Club and was a translator. She lived in Texas for fourteen years, but moved to San Jose in June 2017. When she arrived at Yu-Ai Kai last year she immersed herself in several of the classes that Yu-Ai Kai offers like our drawing class, Monday Handicraft, yoga class, and Enhanced Fitness. She loves music (singing Karaoke, listening to classical music & classic rock). She plays the traditional Japanese koto instrument, enjoys reading the news, and loves arts & crafts. She was born and raised in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The Beginning English Conversation Class is on Mondays at 10:30 am to 12 noon.

Estate Planning Workshop presented by Jeff Nielsen

Ikebana As Mrs. Narimatsu transitions out as our Ikebana instructor for the past 43 years, we are very fortunate to have her assistant instructor and interpreter, Hiroko Sakamoto, take over teaching this class. Hiroko started learning Sogetsu Ikebana in Japan 25 years ago. She continued her classes and also worked at Ikebana Arts a flower store in San Jose Japantown. We are very fortunate to have her continue this beautiful way of arranging flowers. The Ikebana class meets on the first Wednesday of every month.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Naomi Stroud

Yu-Ai Kai

For over a year, Naomi has been our Wednesday Front Desk Receptionist during lunch time. She has truly been a special volunteer as she was working a full time job near the San Jose Mineta Airport and would come to Yu-Ai Kai on her lunch break to volunteer. She really felt the need to give back by volunteering and found Yu-Ai Kai on the Internet. Before Yu-Ai Kai, she volunteered, while in college at San Francisco State University, serving lunch to seniors at a local senior center, where she discovered that she really enjoyed being around seniors. Naomi said that she has always been interested in the movement to support aging in place. Naomi was born and raised in Japan and is fluent in Japanese. She lives in San Francisco and would commute to San Jose. We were so very fortunate to have her at Yu-Ai Kai once a week, as she was always so patient, very professional, and always had a smile for everyone stopping by our front desk. Naomi will be taking some time to travel and we wish her all of the very best in her journey and thank her for incredible volunteer service at Yu-Ai Kai.

Kay Nagareda Yu-Ai Kai would like to thank Kay Nagareda, owner of Kay’s Shiseido Cosmetics in San Jose Japantown, for always helping Yu-Ai Kai by collecting orders for our Mochitsuki. We greatly appreciate her support in making our annual mochimaking event a success!

Community Service from Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School The students from Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School returned to Yu-Ai Kai on December 5, 2017, to do further

community service work. There were twelve 7th graders (ages 12-13 years old) and four parents who met at Yu-Ai Kai at 9:00 am and started by cleaning the tables and chairs on the third floor; Tsukasa and Yoko Kobashi they then proceeded to the second floor and cleaned Tsukasa and Yoko returned to Japan recently for the tables and chairs in work, but we look forward to hopefully welcoming room 202. Their final them back to San Jose Japantown hopefully in project was to do a craft the near future. Both Tsukasa and Yoko have been (which they provided) with incredibly giving and compassionate community our Senior Day Services leaders and volunteers by translating this newsletter participants. ANNOUNCEMENTS Bingo Helpers We have four faithful bingo helpers that volunteer their time and come once a month to help distribute bingo prizes, call bingo, and help put things away. Yu-Ai Kai would like to thank Ron Nishimura, Rose Tsunekawa, Mitzy Whitley, and Kumiko Stratton. We would also like to thank Sue Yamamoto and Eric and Patty Chikasuye for all of their support too. Additionally, we’d like to extend a special thank you to Lolly Mayeda for providing the majority of the bingo prizes from the Scotch Doubles Bowling Tournament.

Eagle Scout Project The Akiyama Wellness Center (AWC) had the good fortune to be approached by Calvin Louie for his Eagle Scout project. AWC was in need of seating and storage in our large activity room, but also required the ability to easily move the seating/storage from roomto-room. Calvin gave this project much thought and

New Personnel Yoko Cannestra

If Yoko looks familiar, it is because she has been a volunteer at Yu-Ai Kai for the past few years in our Senior Day Services program. She has also participated on the Yu-Ai Kai team for our Alzheimer’s Walk.

Yoko was offered a job at Yu-Ai Kai as a substitute Senior Day Services (SDS) program assistant last year, but with one teenager in high school and another starting college, the timing was not right. We are lucky to have her as part of our staff now. Besides being a caring person, she is also very talented – always having great ideas on different craft projects. Yoko was born in Nagoya, Japan, and moved to California in 1994. She is married and has two kids. In her spare time Yoko enjoys golfing, doing crafts, crocheting, and knitting. She feels the SDS program is wonderful for this community as it is open to anyone who needs special services. Yoko feels that seniors have the right to enjoy their lives with socialization and a good nutritious meal.

Maridel Vigo

created a solid plan to make these storage benches a reality for our seniors. He presented his plan to our relevant managers, by drafting drawings, how the wood would be cut, and the type of hardware that would be used. Calvin then brought his troop together on the weekends to build the benches to the specifications he created resulting in four benches! The benches have been a wonderful addition to the center and have been receiving a lot of use by our seniors. A huge, “thank you“ to Calvin for a job well done. Yu-Ai Kai | Winter/Spring 2018

Maridel is the latest wonderful member to join our kitchen staff for our nutrition program. She was first hired as a substitute kitchen aide when she applied for the position after finding our job opening on our website, and we are happy to announce that she is our newest kitchen aide with Setsuko Kubo becoming our new cook with Yoshiko Kobayashi’s retirement. In addition to being our newest staff member, she also volunteers at a concession stand. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her son and enjoys reading books. She is originally from the Philippines and moved here fifteen years ago. Please welcome Maridel to Yu-Ai Kai!

San Jose Mercury News Wishbook Yu-Ai Kai would like to thank all of the incredibly generous donors who saw our requests for specific supply donations in the San Jose Mercury News Wishbook!

ANNOUNCEMENTS Yoshiko Kobayashi Retirement

After 27 years of incredibly dedicated and hard work, Yoshiko Kobayashi retired at the beginning of this year. Yu-Ai Kai would like to thank Yoshiko for her many tireless years of excellent service making our nutrition program the model for Santa Clara County. While our estimates are rough using some fuzzy math, we calculated that Yoshiko helped to make over 700,000 meals during her tenure as our nutrition program’s cook. Yu-Ai Kai would also like to thank her family for hosting a beautiful and

id you know that Yu-Ai Kai tries to do their part for the environment by recycling and reusing several things, listed below are the items we will take and where they go:

• Slightly used or new tennis shoes: There are boxes in both the Yu-Ai Kai and Akiyama Wellness Center lobbies for you to drop off your tennis shoes. They are then given to EcoSangha group. • Used Batteries: There is a box in the Yu-Ai Kai lobby that you can drop your used batteries in. They are then taken to a local Fire Station to be properly disposed of. • Eyeglasses: We collect used eye glasses for the Japantown Lions Club (sorry they do not need the eye glass case) and they have a source that reuses the glasses for people who need them • Bottles and Cans: Can be dropped off at either the Akiyama Wellness Center (AWC) or Yu-Ai Kai (YAK). The newspaper sorters turn them in and the money is used for their supplies. • Used Cell Phones: Drop off your old cell phone at AWC and YAK. Please label the phone with your name and contact information. Some smart phones can be coverted into funds. If not, they will be given to a women’s shelter.
