Brightlingsea is a fantastic place to live, and a wonderful place to visit! It was an island and still keeps that supporting community spirit yet is warm and welcoming, and has flower displays everywhere!
side yachts, sailing dinghies and rowing gigs, and the clubs have a busy calendar including the Regatta. There is always maritime activity to watch or take part in Pic: Terry Hamilton
It has a unique history as the only Cinque Port north of the Thames, you can find our Cinque Port emblem with three gold royal lions joined to three silver ships dotted about the town. You will find it in our oldest building, All Saints’ Church, in the north of the town, down to the southern end of the island on the Cinque Port Wreckhouse by the ancient Hard. For centuries Brightlingsea was an oyster and sprat fishing centre, but it could be a hazardous way of life as recorded in the unique frieze of tiles in All Saints’ Church commemorating those lost at sea. A charming mix of medieval timber-framed and later buildings run along the High Street. Grade 1 listed Jacobs Hall was first recorded in 1315 and has a remarkable 15th century external staircase turret. 4 brightlingseatowncouncil.co.uk
Victorian fishermen’s cottages spill down from the High Street to the Hard, they were built during the heyday of the port’s fishing fleet. Enjoy Brightlingsea’s diversity of shops and great places to eat. Living history can be enjoyed in the town’s pageantry, from the annual Choosing of a new Cinque Port Deputy at All Saints to the amazing sight of historic oyster smacks bedecked with bunting in Brightlingsea’s Blessing & Reclaiming of the Waters from the Hard. The harbour is the heart of Brightlingsea’s sailing community with traditional gaff-rigged smacks along-
and opportunities to learn to sail or row. In the summer months take a ferry to explore Point Clear and East Mersea. Promenade Way leads to Brightlingsea’s seaside, centred around the iconic Bateman’s Tower. Swim in the sea or the Lido, paddle with your children in the Paddling Pool. It’s a great area with children’s playground, parks for picnics another for skate boards, plus boating lake, cafes and colourful beach-huts.
Our sheltered estuaries and gentle coastline are so rich in wildlife that Brightlingsea has extensive national & international coastal wildlife protection designations. Enjoy coastal walks, see saltmarsh with historic oyster pits, grazing marsh, estuary mudflats with abundant wintering waders and wildfowl including Brent geese. Don’t forget to look in on the Lozenge Nature Area and Springmead Gardens. This year the Museum will re-open in its new home. Brightlingsea is always busy with activities and events, Panto, Christmas Tree Festival, choirs, free Music Festival, Open Gardens and many others. Walks & Nature
Walks & Nature OUR GREEN AND PLEASANT SPACES AND NATURE TRAILS BRIGHTLINGSEA IN BLOOM Since the formation of Brightlingsea in Bloom in 1995, Brightlingsea has become renowned for the wonderfully colourful and varied array of floral displays created throughout the town in spring and summer.
Springmead
SPRINGMEAD GARDENS Bequeathed to the townsfolk of Brightlingsea in 1927 by Brightlingsea resident Captain Arthur Wenlock, his one-acre garden became totally neglected and overgrown.
The displays are designed, planted and maintained by an enthusiastic and dedicated team of volunteers – ‘Bloomers’ – and generously funded by local businesses, residents, organisations and councils. The main feature created each year at All Saints Church triangle reflects events, historical occasions, centenary commemorations locally and nationally. Long term environmental projects carried out by Brightlingsea Bloomers can be enjoyed by residents and visitors and include the Millennium Gardens on Promenade Way, The Community Centre Dry Gardens, Gandergoose Green Commemorative Garden and Springmead Gardens. 6 brightlingseatowncouncil.co.uk
In 2001 Brightlingsea In Bloom secured £25,000 funding through the Countryside Agency Local Heritage Initiative and a £53,000 East of England Development Grant to carry out a major restoration project on the garden. Today this tranquil oasis has matured beautifully, into a sheltered dell with a natural stream and bog area planted with moisture-loving giant Gunnera. Bark paths meander around the upper shady areas. A large sunny border offers up a pot-pourri of delightful fragrances and Springmead on a secluded sunny bank, the Echiums grow to great heights.
There’s a number of wood piles to provide a habitat for hedgehogs, amphibians and a wide variety of insects, while bird feeders, roosting and nesting boxes are erected around the garden. Around the lawn are memorial seats where visitors can enjoy the many aspects of this unique garden. FURTHER INFORMATION Access to Springmead Gardens is from Spring Chase. The gardens are open daily except Christmas Day & New Year’s Day, April to October: 9am to 6pm, October to March: 10am to dusk (note that it may be closed occasionally for private functions). Admission free, no dogs (except guide dogs) FOOTPATHS There are over 26 miles of footpaths around Brightlingsea. The longest walk is from Bateman’s Tower to Alresford Creek – about five miles in all – and it follows the sea wall. The paths are easy walking but provide much of interest, especially for those who enjoy birdwatching. Various water birds, geese, waders and harriers can be seen throughout the year.
The Lozenge
THE LOZENGE The Lozenge has been transformed from an overgrown, inaccessible plot into a nature area to be enjoyed by all. You’ll find a tranquil atmosphere where you can meander along the footpaths, exploring the diverse variety of trees, plants and wildlife, visit the pond area or just sit, relax and observe all around you. The Lozenge is located near the Community Centre and is open daily from 9am to dusk between March 1 – November 30. THE COLNE ESTUARY The mudflats of the Colne Estuary are an area of great natural beauty, and provide a rich larder for migrant birds including avocet, red shank and black-tailed godwit, along with thousands of wading birds, ducks and geese every winter. The area is home to an abundance of wild- ➡ brightlingseatowncouncil.co.uk

THERE’S PLENTY FOR THE FAMILY TO DO IN BRIGHTLINGSEA now a true community asset for the town and welcomes visitors from all over Essex and East Anglia. The Lido is run by a mixture of paid staff and volunteers. There are full time trained lifeguards and special events throughout the summer. The seasonal opening has been restored from the end of May through to September.
Nature trail leaflets are available from the Town Council offices, and the Harbour Commissioners’ office. Pic: Ant Niles
BRIGHTLINGSEA OPEN GARDENS The 28th Brightlingsea Open Gardens weekend in aid of St. Helena Hospice will take place on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th June, 2020, a wonderful annual event featuring beautiful, quirky and creative gardens of all shapes and sizes. Usually between 25 and 30 gardens take part, many serving refreshments and selling plants and home-made goods. Ploughman’s lunches will be served by the Brightlingsea Hospice Support Group, which has been raising funds to support the Hospice for over 30 years. Last year the group raised over £18,000 through Open Gardens, two musical events, a Spring Fayre and a Late Summer Lunch. Visit all the gardens for the price of a programme – look out for the rainbowcoloured windmills! 8 brightlingseatowncouncil.co.uk
BRIGHTLINGSEA LIDO Brightlingsea Lido was built in 1932 and is well loved by the people of Brightlingsea and beyond. It is the only remaining outdoor Lido in Essex and a major tourist attraction on the town’s Western Promenade.
The Lido has enjoyed two full summers under its new management and has achieved incredible attendances with over 48,000 visiting in the last two years. In 2019 the ageing plant room received a complete overhaul thanks to a grant ➡
After several years of closure threats Brightlingsea Town Council led a campaign which resulted in an asset transfer of the Lido from the district council in April 2018. There was a fantastic community response from volunteers and local businesses, which led to a total transformation of the changing rooms, pool and surrounding area. The Lido is now accessible by wheelchair users and has a disabled changing facility. The Town Council manage the Lido in conjunction with a Charitable Trust, and a dedicated group of trustees oversee the day to day running of the Lido. The pool is brightlingseatowncouncil.co.uk 9

We all love the fun of dangling a line with a bit of bacon tied on over the side of the jetty in the hope of catching the biggest crab. We want everyone to continue to enjoy this great seaside pastime but we also want to make sure our lovely crabs don’t get hurt in the process. If you follow the Good Crabbing Guide video at gonecrabbing.co.uk and the instructions here, it will ensure that our crabs will not suffer any unintentional harm and prevent them becoming stressed. Starting in 2020 the Brightlingsea Harbour Office will be making available steel buckets and a degradable line to replace those environmentally unfriendly plastics. There will also be a

BRIGHTLINGSEA SAILING CLUB Brightlingsea Sailing Club has become one of the busiest, friendliest and most respected clubs in the UK. Members sail a wide range of dinghies and catamarans, racing and pottering at the weekends and some evenings from March to December, with day sailing during the week. The club hosts open meetings and championships, with crews coming from around the UK and abroad to compete. The ever-popular Pyefleet Week takes place from August 2-7. With around 100 boats, there’s plenty of activity to see as boats
race every morning and afternoon. Cadet training takes place on Tuesday evenings from May to the end of July for nine to 18-year-olds, and this year there’s a three-day Youth Regatta starting on July 29. Brightlingsea’s unique history is kept alive in its ceremonies as a Cinque Port, the only one north of the Thames. It is a “Limb” of Sandwich, our Head Port in Kent. Each year on Choosing Day, the first Monday in December, the Deputy is chosen by the Freemen of the Cinque Port Liberty. He is the Mayor of Sandwich’s representative in Brightlingsea and in the past was the chief official of the town. On Choosing Day, new inhabitants who have been resident for a year and a day More than just a Financial Services provider Foresters Friendly Society has been providing financial help and support to its members for over 180 years. can also come forward to be ‘Recognised’ and declared Freemen. In July each year, the Deputy is confirmed in office, along with Deputies of two other Limbs of Sandwich, in a historic ceremony in Sandwich’s Guildhall. Each June, the Mayor of Sandwich pays an official visit to Brightlingsea. There is a colourful procession from St James Church through the town centre to the Parish Hall, where he is received by the Town Mayor. Pic: Liz Artindale
COLNE FISHING SMACKS AND THAMES BARGES The town of Brightlingsea, on the River Colne, was once home to several boatyards building wooden boats including sailing smacks. These were used for fishing for catches of oysters, sprats and other types of fish. The town is host to the Colne Smack Preservation Society based in the Aldous Heritage Smack Dock adjacent to Colne Yacht Club. Membership is open to the general public and details are available from 01206 305188 or members@ colnesmack.co.uk. The fully restored 1898 Thames Sailing Barge ‘Dawn’ is currently berthed beside the dock.
Further information on these events and registration is from Martin Doe on 01206 272000. A major Match with open viewing from Batemans Tower is for smacks, the larger Thames Sailing Barges and small open fishing boats. This is on 12 September, with start times to be announced. Pic: John Carr

Maritime History BATEMAN’S TOWER
BRIGHTLINGSEA MASONS
Bateman’s Tower is one of the town’s best known landmarks, a folly built in 1883 by John Bateman for his daughter to recuperate from consumption.
The history of Freemasonry in Brightlingsea dates back to 1836 when the Lodge of Hope was formed for master mariners. The Lodge of Faith followed in 1949, followed by the Lodge of Charity in 1983. The addition of the Tendring Hundred Lodge brought the number based at the hall in Tower Street to four. These Lodges often have social events which are open to all.
Located beside the paddling pool, with a commanding view of the creek, the River Colne and the estuary, the tower was used as an observation post by the Royal Observer Corps during WWII. During this time the roof was removed to make the tower less conspicuous to enemy aircraft. In 2005, a restoration project restored the tower to its original condition, including the fitting of a replica of the original roof. It’s now used by the Colne Yacht Club and other organisations to start races from. The tower leans slightly – and it’s a popular spot for watching the sun go down. Brightlingsea sunsets are often stunning!
