WELCOME AAMU STUDENTS
Start Here... 2
SALUTE TO GREAT LEADERS! New AAMU students and parents can rest well knowing that their University has been left in solid standing by two phenomenal leaders. After many years of great service, President Andrew Hugine, Jr., will enter retirement, leaving behind a legacy of good financial standing and monumental foresight. From the Student Health and Wellness Center of 2009, a new Residence Hall of 2018, to the new Event Center and Welcome Center scheduled for 2022, the new facilities will continue to positively impact the campus and student services. We also salute Dr. Gary Crosby, the outgoing Vice President for Student Affairs, who has brought nationally known personalities to campus, put in place meaningful support structures and policies, and has successfully guided AAMU through its pandemic response.
Salute!

It was renamed the State Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes in 1891, and its present campus was established at Normal, Alabama.
labama A&M University
(AAMU) is a four-year, state supported, co-ed, land-grant institution with a three-fold function of teaching, research, and public service, including extension. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The campus has grown from 200 acres to more than 2,000. There are 30 major buildings on the campus. Alabama A&M University is a dynamic and progressive institution with a strong commitment to academic excellence. Many of its faculty are engaged in cutting-edge research, including removing peanut allergens, colorectal cancer education, home food preservation, non-contact weighing of livestock, and numerous other areas.
The beautiful hillside campus makes up Normal, Alabama adjacent and part of Huntsville. Its mission is to provide a setting for the creation of scholars, leaders, and contributing members of society.
The picturesque campus is situated on what many alumni and friends fondly refer to as “The Hill”. Serving over 6,000 students, the institution is a diverse and vibrant microcosm of the larger world around it, an attraction of Nobel Laureates and other distinguished intellectuals, and it offers numerous degree programs, including the Ph.D. degrees in food science; physics; plant and soil science; and reading literacy.
AAMU was organized through the passage of a bill by the Alabama State Legislature. It originally opened as the Huntsville Normal School in 1875 under the leadership of its first president, Dr. William Hooper Councill, a former slave. The school opened on May 1, 1875 with an appropriation of $1,000 per year, 61 students, and two teachers. The name was changed to State Normal Industrial at Huntsville in 1878.
Opportunities are also available for students to study abroad.
An appropriation from the Morrill Act, the second land grant act that Congress passed in 1890, gave the school the status of a land-grant institution.

Welcome to “The Hill,” Bulldogs! Dear class of 2025, Welcome to “the hill”- a greeting that I, too, received upon my first arrival to campus, nearly a decade ago. I can still remember standing in the parking lot of the Alabama A&M University Honors Center and surveying the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding hills and valleys. The land seemed to whisper to me that I would come to love it as deeply and fiercely as so many of my predecessors. This proved to be true! I love this institution for what it represents and ALL that it has to offer: a rich history, an affordable and quality education, beautiful scenery, and more! What I can assure you is that you are about to embark upon an amazing journey! You are going to forge friendships and connections that last a lifetime. You will develop academically, personally and professionally. What we anticipate is that you will depart the four walls of this institution prepared to take the world by storm! I encourage you to give your VERY BEST in this season. Partner with the university community to become the best leader, best student, best person you could possibly be. As you move through this process, we will be with you every step of the way. Again, welcome, and thank you for making the decision to join our wonderful family. Go Bulldogs! Dr. Kyla Pitcher

Financial Aid And Scholarships
Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University
Welcome From The Director of
Financial Aid Welcome Future Bulldogs and Family from The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships! The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships welcomes you to S.O.A.R. and to “The Hill”. It is my sincere hope that you will discover that our office is a resource that will be invaluable to you during your matriculation here at Alabama A&M University. The primary focus of our office is to insure that the “price” or the “cost” does not prohibit any student from enrolling here at Alabama A&M University. We don’t live in a perfect world. However, Alabama A&M University (AAMU), was founded as a landgrant college with our ultimate purpose being to provide a firm commitment to the idea of offering you an affordable education. Our goal is to help you understand the process of paying for your education and to help you to access resources and programs that will help make financing your education possible here at AAMU. What you make of your college education can truly be evaluated by considering the return on your financial investment. In other words, is the cost of your education going to be worth the benefits reaped? When a comparison is made on those who obtain a higher education as opposed to those who do not. Statistics support proven facts that those who pursue a higher education will be more employable, adjust to career changes better, live a longer, higher quality life and enjoy a much higher lifetime income than those who do not. We do ask you to remember that financial aid, like all the rest of your financial matters, is a resource that needs to be governed carefully. I urge you to review all available resources and make your decisions wisely. And please do not hesitate to contact my office should you have questions or need additional information. Sincerely,

FAQS
AWARDS & EXPENSES FAQS
I received my award letter, what do I do next? Upon receipt of award letter, you can access your online student account to accept awards that are at “offered” status. • Sign in to Banner Self-Service using your Banner ID and Banner Password • Select Financial Aid • Select Award • Select Award for Aid Year (and choose Current Semester) • Click on Accept your Award Offer Contact the IT help desk if you need instructions on how to access your online student account. They can be reached at 256-372-4357.
Why haven’t I received an award letter? There could be a number of reasons for having not received an award letter. i.e. your FAFSA could have been selected for verification or you could have neglected to include our school code (001002) on your FAFSA. Keep in mind that after completing your FAFSA, it takes 3-5 business days for our office to receive it. Also note that the name spelling, date of birth, and social security number submitted on your FAFSA must match your application to AAMU. Email us for further info [email protected].
Is it mandatory that I accept the loans offered on my award letter? Acceptance of the loans is not mandatory; however you can use them as a resource if needed. *Please note the instructions that were included with your award letter. What charges does financial aid help to pay? • Tuition • Room and Board (housing and meal plan) • Mandatory Fees
Can financial aid be used to cover my SOAR fees, housing application, and housing deposit? No, those charges are out-of-pocket expenses.
How do I determine how much I owe after my awards are taken into consideration? Your financial obligations will vary depending upon your class enrollment, whether you reside in campus housing, and other factors. However, as a general rule of thumb, please note the following:

$3,840.00
$3,840.00
Fees
$1,656.00
$1,656.00
$19,506.00
$28,116.00
Total Cost
*To get a general idea of your remaining obligations, you may subtract your total award amount from the totals above. Keep in mind that the totals may vary depending on choice of housing assignment etc.
Does financial aid cover books? Book charges are not usually covered by general financial aid proceeds. However, if the total financial aid for the semester exceeds the total charges, the excess can be used to purchase books during the book voucher availability period. *Book voucher awards are also included with some scholarship awards. (This will be indicated on your award letter) What are my next steps if my total financial aid award will not cover my total charges? We recommend that you pursue outside scholarships and other forms of non-university funding. You can also touch base with the department in which you plan to major; sometimes they have funding to offer. Lastly, payment plans can be setup to cover remaining balances. The payment plan option is done by contacting The Office of Student Accounts. Typically, payment plans can be setup after you have completed your SOAR session.

I was offered a Parent Plus Loan on my award letter. Am I required to accept this loan? No, the parent loan is offered as an option to help you meet your financial obligations. Acceptance of this loan is not required. What procedure is required to accept and receive the Parent Plus Loan? Since it appears on my award letter, am I automatically approved for it? In order to receive the parent loan, the parent must apply for it using the directions included on your award letter. The parent must be approved in order for you to receive the loan. There is credit criteria involved. The Parent Plus Loan offer on my award letter seems to be for an exceptionally large amount. Is this how much it costs to attend AAMU? No, the amount of the parent loan represents the difference between the total aid offer that the student is receiving and the total maximum allowable aid that can be received for the year. How does a parent apply for the Parent Plus Loan? The parent of the student (preferably the parent that is on the FAFSA) must go to www.studentloans.gov, and sign in under their profile using their FSA ID to complete the Parent plus loan. Once the parent signs in they will choose the “Request Plus Loan” option, and then choose the “Parent Plus Loan” option, then proceed to fill out the application. At the end of the application the parent will submit the application, and at that point the parent’s credit will checked. In the event that the credit is approved the parent will notify a financial aid counselor. The counselor will accept the loan for the parent, and make any needed adjustments to the loan. In the event that the parent’s credit is denied, then they have the choice to either choose “I do not wish to pursue the Parent Plus Loan any further” (counselor will increase the student’s unsubsidized loan) or “I wish to use an endorser for the Parent Plus Loan” (cosigner).

PARENT PLUS LOAN FAQS

Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University
VERIFICATION FAQS What does it mean if I am selected for verification? Each year the U.S. Department of Education randomly selects a certain percentage of FAFSAs for verification. This means that the school must collect certain documentation prior to being able to award federal financial aid to the students selected for verification. What are my next steps if I am selected for verification? If you are selected for verification, please submit the required documentation to IDOC. DO NOT submit the documentation to the Financial Aid Office. The required documentation is indicated on the verification correspondence you received from our office and/or from IDOC. What is IDOC? (Institutional Documentation Service) The College Board Institutional Documentation Service is a third party vender that Alabama A&M’s Financial Aid Office uses to collect and process all verification documentation that is submitted. IDOC will place the student’s documentation onto a secure sever allowing the AAMU Financial Aid Office to retrieve and examine the information to complete the verification process. How do I submit my documentation to IDOC? There are two options in which you may submit required documentation. The required documentation maybe submitted online or by mail. If you are submitting online: • Sign in to idoc.collegeboard.org with the student’s social security number and date of birth. You should see the “Document Management Dashboard” after you’ve signed in. If the student is logging into IDOC for the first time they will need to add a primary parent onto the IDOC account under Primary Parent household. • View documents to be uploaded under section “Required Documents”. • Make sure documents are saved in an accessible place on your computer or device. • Click “Upload Documents” (check to see if “parent info” or “family info” is correct) • Click “Next” if all parent and family info is correct. • Navigate to “File”. Browse Desktop for your file. • Once you have found the file click on “Upload Files”. • Click “Submit” and add “More files”. • When you have finished uploading files, your files will appear under “My Uploads”. (Uploaded documents may still appear as “Required Documents”. It takes 2-3 business days for the validation process to be completed) If you are submitting by mail: • Sign in to idoc.collegeboard.org with the student’s social security number and date of birth. You should see the “Document Management Dashboard” after you have signed in. *Note: If the student is logging into IDOC for the first time they will need to add a primary parent onto the IDOC account under Primary Parent household.

What is the turnaround time for my verification to be completed once I submit the needed information to IDOC? We typically ask that you will allow 7-10 business days for your file to be updated after successful submission of verification documents. Keep in mind that it takes 2-3 business days for IDOC to validate your submitted documents. Please do contact us if you do not receive additional correspondence after this timeframe. What if I have questions regarding the student’s tax transcript being requested for verification (i.e. the student did not work or did not file taxes)? If the student did not work: • Indicate this on the standard verification worksheet. The student Tax Transcript requirement will be waived during the verification process. If the student did work but did not file taxes: • Report earnings on the 2020-2021 AAMU Verification Worksheet. • Submit a copy of all 2018 W-2s or a 2018 Wage and Earnings Statement from the IRS.

OTHER FAQS What is meant by Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)? The federal government requires that all students meet and maintain certain academic progress standards in order to receive financial aid funding. A minimum GPA must be obtained and you must complete a certain percentage of the hours you attempt. What level of academic performance must I achieve in order to maintain eligibility for financial aid funding? • You must complete 67% of the total hours you attempt each semester. • You must achieve and maintain a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA). (For example, a minimum 1.50 GPA is required for students with 24-30 attempted hours.) • You must finish your program of study within 150% of the timeframe allowed to do so. (For example, most programs require 4 years to complete, in this case you would need to complete the program within 150% of 4 years [6 years]. What happens if I don’t meet these SAP requirements? If you do not meet these minimum requirements, your eligibility for financial aid funding will be rescinded. When will I be reviewed for (SAP) compliance? All students are initially reviewed for SAP compliance after the completion of 24 credit hours. You will then be reviewed at the end of each spring semester thereafter. What options do I have if I don’t meet SAP requirements and my financial aid eligibility is rescinded? You can appeal to explain why you didn’t meet the minimum requirements. Or you can pay for your education using personal resources. Your appeal will be reviewed by a committee, and a decision rendered. Where can I find additional information regarding the AAMU Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy? You may view additional information on this policy by accessing the following link from our website: https://www.aamu.edu/Admissions/fincialaid/importantinformation/Pages/Satisfactory-Academic-Progress-Policy.aspx
What additional information do I need to remember going forward beyond my Freshman year? Be sure to complete your FAFSA each year. The FAFSA is made available online beginning October 1 of each year. Returning students will select the “renewal” option. AAMU’s Priority processing date is February 1 of each year. Submit your FAFSA prior to this date to insure that you are considered for the maximum financial package for which you qualify. Where Can I find My Banner ID and PIN once I am admitted? • Go to www.aamu.edu and look for “myAAMU” on the right hand side of the home page. • Click on “Banner” • Click on “Look-up Banner-ID and PIN”

Drake LRC has evolved with those choices in the format and selection of resources that supports the university curricula. Trained subject specialist librarians provide research consultation by appointments through virtual or walk-in contact. Students and faculty may contact the director or a librarian via the social media platforms, Facebook, Twitter, and by e-mail. Welcome to the Bulldog Nation where “Service is Sovereignty”. Freshman Academy
Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University
The Freshman Academy is a collaborative, student centered learning environment dedicated to serving students. In a continual effort to help students with their initial transition to Alabama A&M University,
meetings, the advisors and the student select academic courses based upon the student’s declared major course curriculum. Students are also provided opportunities to explore career and educational goals, and become familiar with major requirements. Academic Advisors diligently adhere to the academic policies and procedures established by the university; and serve as instructors for the First Year Experience (Orientation 101 and 102) courses. For more information, contact Mindi Thompson, Lead Academic Advisor/Mentor, (256) 372-4289, [email protected].
the Freshman Academy provides students with information and direction they need to successfully matriculate, persist from one semester to the next and perform well academically as they seek a baccalaureate degree
The Academy serves all first-time freshmen, continuing freshmen (less than 31 credit hours), and academically at-risk students (e.g., academic warning, probation, suspension) regardless of their classification. It also provides quality services and programs, which include (1) Academic Advising, (2) Academic Recovery, (3) Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction (SI), (4) GradesFirst academic early alert notifications and (5) Service Learning (Volunteerism) and Learning Communities activities. The core elements of these five programs are designed to provide access, advocacy and academic support services to the students served.
Academic Recovery The Academic Recovery program provides specialized intrusive academic assistance to all students on academic warning, academic probation and/or those who are experiencing academic difficulty. The mission of these academic advisor/ mentors is to provide recovery services which increase student achievement and persistence. Additional assistance is provided to students who have not declared a major and who may need additional guidance with determining their educational goals and career pursuits. This is vital as continued enrollment in an undergraduate program at Alabama A&M University is dependent upon a student maintaining academic progress
Academic Advising The academic advising process is a collaborative connection between the academic advisor and the student. During each semester’s academic advising

classroom learning. Opportunities are provided for students to deliver service, apply classroom theory to the real world, and reflect on their experiences, to reinforce the link between service and learning. Service Learning and Learning Communities also facilitates an understanding and application of the pillars of character: responsibility, caring, fairness, honesty, citizenship, leadership and trustworthiness, while exemplifying the University’s motto, “Service is Sovereignty.” For additional information contact, Monica Clarke, Program Coordinator, (256) 372-4710, [email protected].
First Year Experience Courses 101 and 102 The FYE courses – ORI 101 and 102 – are one credit hour courses. First time freshmen and new transfer students who enter AAMU with fewer than 30 credit hours are required to take the course. Both courses are required for graduation, except in the Biology, Chemistry and Physics Teacher Education programs which require only ORI 101 to graduate. The course content aids new students in making a satisfactory adjustment to the collegiate environment.
Tutorial Assistance Network (TAN) The Tutorial Assistance Network (TAN) is a College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certified academic support program. TAN coordinates and maintains campus-wide individual and group peer tutoring, supplemental instruction (SI) and Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) labs in many academic courses at no additional cost to AAMU undergraduate students. Tutors, SI leaders and SLA leaders are “learning partners” to students who utilize their services. Appointment tutorial sessions are provided for students who are interested in scheduling advance assistance; and walk-in tutoring is available in some courses for students who prefer to drop in as needed. Students may schedule tutoring appointments through the TAN office or GradesFirst. They may also take advantage of TAN’s weekly SI review sessions and SLA Labs to improve their understanding of course materials and their course grades. For more information, contact Linda Skeete McClellan, Program Specialist, (256) 372-5847, [email protected].
GradesFirst As part of the university’s ongoing commitment to improving student success, retention and graduation rates, the Education Advisory Board’s (EAB) GradesFirst Academic Alert System has been implemented. GradesFirst enables faculty, staff and advisors to quickly identify and assist students who may be in need of early intervention or longrange academic planning. GradesFirst equips them with the tools and the ability to identify, warn and provide assistance to students who are not making satisfactory academic progress. For more information, contact Dawn Miles, Research/Data Analyst, (256) 372-5494, [email protected]. “What is DegreeWorks?”
How will DegreeWorks use my academic data? DegreeWorks looks at the requirements for a program of study as well as the coursework completed to create an easy-to-read degree audit. What is a degree audit? A degree audit is an easyto-read view of a student’s requirements for their program of study. The audit, in conjunction with AAMU’s catalog, is a checklist of requirements for a degree at Alabama A&M University. The audit is organized in block format displaying requirements for completion of general education, major,
It is a web-based, academic advising tool designed to help students manage their academic progress. It identifies courses that fulfill requirements for your major and degree completion. It displays graduation requirements you’ve met already and those you’ve yet to complete. You can also generate “What If ” evaluations to see how courses you’ve already completed would be used if you changed majors. This is a very powerful and invaluable tool that can help you achieve academic goals on time in collaboration with your academic advisor. You may be wondering “Why do I need such a tool, I am just a freshman?” Here are a few FAQs to help you and your parents understand just how important DegreeWorks is to your degree completion.

Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University
Are grades visible in DegreeWorks? Yes. All grades are visible in DegreeWorks. Even transferred grades. At the end of each semester, once grades are processed, you can see them in DegreeWorks the following day. How does DegreeWorks prepare a degree audit? DegreeWorks takes all the students’ courses from Banner and displays how the courses are applied to the requirements for the student’s general education, major, concentration and minor in accordance with the university catalog. May I access DegreeWorks on any computer? Yes, any computer with an Internet connection will be able to access DegreeWorks. DegreeWorks is a web-based application. It is directly accessible through your AAMU Bulldog student account. What does the “@” sign mean in DegreeWorks? The @ symbol is a wild card in DegreeWorks. If the symbol appears before numbers it means you may enroll in any subject with the corresponding course numbers. For example, @ 200 (this means PSY 200, MATH 200, CHEM 200, or any other subject with that number). If the @ appears after a subject it means any number of that subject. For example, MATH @@@ (this means MATH 133, MATH 231 or any other MATH course). If the symbol appears after a number it means any level of that number is applicable. For example, MATH 2@@. Is the information in DegreeWorks confidential? Yes. Your information can only be accessed by logging in to your AAMU Banner account. Make sure you log out of your account when you have completed your degree audit review. How will DegreeWorks benefit students? • Students are provided a more personalized advising experience with their advisors.
39

What if my major/minor/concentration is not right in DegreeWorks? Can I change it in DegreeWorks? Your major, minor, and/or concentration cannot be changed in DegreeWorks. If your major, minor, or concentration is not right on your degree audit, you must come to the Registrar’s Offce to get the Change of Major/Minor/Concentration form and have it signed by the appropriate departments. Once the signatures have been obtained, you must bring the form back to the Registrar’s Office for processing. The updated information with the new major/minor/concentration should now show on your DegreeWorks audit.

Use the “WhatIf ” analysis to select the major in which you are interested. It will pull an audit that factors in the courses you have completed and what is still required for degree completion. How current is the information in DegreeWorks? DegreeWorks is refreshed every morning from Banner. The information that is updated during the day will be displayed in DegreeWorks the following morning. If updated information is needed to review immediately, students and academic advisors may still be able to use Banner by logging into the student’s account.
Can I register for classes in DegreeWorks? No. However, DegreeWorks can be used to help you plan for future semesters. If you click on a class still needed for completion, it will give you current/future semester dates, times, and available seats for that class. You still need to obtain an

What is FERPA?
To which educational agencies or institutions does FERPA apply? FERPA applies to educational agencies or institutions that receive funds from programs administered by the U.S. Department of Education. By educational agencies or instutions we mean public schools, school districts (or local educational agencies (LEAs), and postsecondary institutions, such as colleges and universities. Private and parochial schools at the elementary and secondary level generally do not receive such funding and are, therefore, not subject to FERPA.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that affords parents the right to have access to their children’s education records, the right to seek to have the records amended, and the right to have some control over the disclosure of personally identifiable information from the education records. When a student turns 18 years old, or enters a postsecondary instruction at any age, the rights under FERPA transfer from the parents to the student (eligible student). The FERPA statute is found at 20 U.S.C. § 1232g and the FERPA regulations are found at 34 CFR Part 99.
What is an Education Record? Education records are records that are directly related to a student and maintained by an educational agency, institution, or a party acting for or on behalf of the agency or institution. These records include but are not limited to grades, transcripts, class lists, student course schedules, health records (at the K-12 level), student financial information (at the post-secondary level), and student discipline files. The information may be recorded in any way, including, but not limited to, handwriting, print, computer media, videotape, audiotape, film, microfilm, microfiche, and e-mail.
Who is a parent? The term “parent” is defined as including natural parents, guardians, or an individual acting as a parent in the absence of a parent or a guardian. Who is an eligible student? An eligible student means a student who has reached the age of 18 or who is a ending a postsecondary institution at any age. Once a student becomes an eligible student, the rights afforded his or her parents under FERPA transfer to that student. Source: 20 U.S.C. § 1232g(d)
Can stepparents, grandparents, and other caregivers be considered parents under FERPA? In some cases, a stepparent may be considered a parent under FERPA if the stepparent is present on a day-to-day basis with the natural parent and child and the other parent is absent from that home. Conversely, a stepparent who is not present on a day-to-day basis in the home of the child does not have rights under FERPA with respect to the child’s education records. A grandparent or other caregiver who is acting in the absence of the parent may also be considered a parent under FERPA.
What about records held by law enforcement? Law enforcement unit records (i.e., records created by the law enforcement unit, created for a law enforcement purpose, and maintained by the law enforcement unit) are not education records subject to the privacy protections of FERPA. As such, the law enforcement unit may refuse to provide a parent or eligible student with an opportunity to inspect and review law enforcement unit records, and it may disclose law enforcement unit records to third parties without the parent or eligible students prior written consent. However, education records, or personally indentifiable information from education records, which the school shares with the law enforcement unit do not lose their protected status as education records just because they are shared with the law enforcement unit.
FERPA forms are maintained by the Office of The Registrar.

Amateurism Eligibility All incoming student-athletes must be certified as an amateur student-athlete. With global recruiting becoming more common, determining the amateur status of college bound student-athletes can be challenging. All college bound student-athletes, including international students, need to adhere to NCAA amateurism requirements in order to preserve their eligibility for NCAA intercollegiate athletics. Certification process All college bound student-athletes must have an academic and amateurism certification from the NCAA Eligibility Center. The online registration process that must be completed by all future Division I and II college bound student-athletes includes a questionnaire relating to the individual’s amateur status. For the staff at the NCAA Eligibility Center to certify amateur status, college bound student-athletes must answer a questionnaire during registration. The questionnaire covers the following pre-collegiate enrollment activities: l Contracts with professional teams l Salary for participating in athletics l Prize money l Play with professionals l Tryouts, practice or competition with a professional team l Benefits from an agent or prospective agent l Agreement to be represented by an agent l Delayed initial full-time collegiate enrollment to participate in organized sports competition The Guide for the College Bound Student-Athlete contains more detailed information about initial academic and amateurism eligibility.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS TRANSFER RULES Division I student-athletes interested in transferring to another four-year college or university and student-athletes at two-year colleges interested in attending a four-year school should be aware of the rules that govern the transfer process.
before from a four-year school and meets academic requirements, that student-athlete might be able to use the one-time transfer exception (except in baseball, basketball, men’s ice hockey or football).
q Eligibility: Transfers from two-year colleges must have their academic and amateur status certified, just as incoming freshmen do.
- If the student-athlete never has been recruited, received an athletics scholarship or practiced beyond a 14-consecutive day period at any school or participated in competition before transferring
- If the first school dropped the sport of the affected student-athlete
q Permission to contact: Most transfers from four- year college or university to four-year college or university require a “permissionto-contact” letter from the current school’s athletics director to the new school’s coach or administrator. The new school cannot contact the student-athlete until the current school agrees to the contact. If the current school does not agree, the student-athlete can appeal.
- If the student-athlete returns to the first school without participating at the second school
q Five-year clock: Division I studentathletes have five calendar years from the first enrollment at a two-or four-year school to compete four seasons of competition. q Academic year in residence: Research shows that student-athletes who remain at one college or university throughout their academic careers graduate at higher rates than those who transfer. To encourage an academic focus, the NCAA requires Division I student-athletes who transfer from a two-year school and do not meet transfer requirements or transfer from one four-year school to another four-year school to spend one academic year in residence before being eligible to play. There are exceptions to the rule: - If the student-athlete has never transferred
