HAPPY SPRING

GARDENING FRIENDS! April 2021 finds us at the start of another new spring season. With the fairly normal weather we experienced in Northeast Ohio over winter, plants have had proper time to rest and wake up right on schedule, if not early. As the growing season gets underway, I hope you’re as excited as we are to enjoy the fresh air, the exercise, and all the enjoyment gardening brings. As you flip through the pages of this special, anniversary edition of the magazine, keep an eye out for the new varieties of annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs we’re growing from Proven Winners®, plus the beautiful new petite variety of Knock Out® Roses. We’ve also put together some helpful stories to address topics that are top-of-mind for customers right now, including shade gardening, container gardening, perennial gardening, decorating with indoor plants, and more. This year, I am also humbled to note that we are beginning our 50th season as a family-owned business. I was fortunate to open the original Oakwood Village location as a very small landscape & garden operation with no solid floor or overhead cover on April 15, 1971. It’s where the business became a family business. It’s where Maria and I worked to raise AJ, Andria, and Lisa with a strong work ethic, a solid sense of community, and dirt under their fingernails. And it’s also where we first started growing our own plants – long before establishing our greenhouse growing facilities in Columbia Station and our tree & shrub farms in Lake County. Today, Oakwood Village is where we continue to serve customers from a 39,000-square-foot garden center while administering the now nine-location business from a small office building right next door and with the support of a talented and dedicated team of hundreds. Much has changed over the years and, yet, nothing has changed because the goal has always been to build something meaningful that brings happiness into people’s lives, every day. We are doing that by providing the highest quality plants, the deepest selection with the most varieties, and exceptional service delivered by our amazing team of plant experts. Fifty years in, I can say the road has not always been easy but it has been a blessing and a gift. It is the life’s work of my family. I hope that Petitti Garden Centers has positively impacted you, and your family, and our communities over the years, and that you’ll continue to welcome Petitti’s into your home. With A.J. by my side as president, please allow me to say with the most sincere dedication, Thank you for supporting our local business for fifty years, and let’s get this next fifty under way! - Angelo Petitti, Founder & Owner

Rhododendron Dandy Man Color Wheel®

NEW FROM PROVEN WINNERS

®

TRIAL & TESTED FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE

Proven Winners’ plants are world renowned for their beauty, but also for their outstanding garden performance. Their plants endure rigorous trials and neglect in order to select the best of the best. Here are a few of PW’s newest arrivals in our nurseries…

Burning Bush Unforgettable Fire®

Looking for an attractive, narrow, columnar evergreen that won’t grow out of control and become a pruning headache? Introducing False Cypress Pinpoint® Blue and Pinpoint® Blue & Gold. Both produce deer resistant, soft, feathery textured foliage with soft blue highlights. They can be used as thrillers in container gardens, planted as natural windbreaks, or used as specimen plants growing 15-20’ tall by 5-6’ wide. They rarely need pruning but do require well-drained areas in sun to part shade in the landscape. We depend on Rhododendrons for showy spring color and bold, evergreen foliage year-round, but we know they can be finicky and difficult to establish, especially in sunny, claysoil conditions. The answer is Dandy Man Color Wheel® Rhododendron. It’s not only disease resistant and durable, it also develops frilly, tri-colored flowers that change from cherry-red to deep pink and clean white. Plus, it has excellent heat tolerance, allowing for planting in full sun to part shade, 4-8’ tall and wide!

Rose Oso Easy Italian Ice®

A Midwest landscape staple is burning bush due to its low maintenance and show-stopping fall color. Unforgettable Fire® is just as easy to grow as the rest, but with one superior difference - its refined habit is fuller, with denser, finer branching and smaller foliage, growing 5-7’ tall and wide. Always plant in full sun for best fall color. One of the easiest to grow, landscape roses available with multicolor pink, apricot, and yellow semi-double blooms over a compact, 18-30” habit is PW’s Rose of the Year called Oso Easy Italian Ice®. No spraying, no deadheading, just enjoy the abundant, self-cleaning roses all growing season!

SIMPLE SIDE YARD MAKEOVER D . I . Y. S P O T L I G H T The side yard. It’s an area we rarely focus on, yet we walk/ drive past it regularly and the next-door neighbors often have it in full view. You can quickly and easily improve that view with a half-day’s work of planting, if starting with a clean slate. If the area needs weeding and removal of overgrown plants, it may take a couple of days. Either way, side yards present an interesting opportunity you may not have considered before to garden with shrubs, perennials, and small ornamental trees! Start by measuring the landscape bed, and note the hours of sunlight it receives. Next, do some plant research by visiting petittigardencenter.com or any one of our nine locations, paying close attention to sunlight requirements, height and width at maturity, and notable plant attributes (e.g. deer resistant, pollinator attractant) as you make your selections. Keep in mind that side yard landscape beds tend to be narrow, fitting one average-sized shrub every 3-5 feet and one average perennial every 2 feet. Knowing this will help you divvy up the space and put a limit on your plant quantities. Also, remember the plants you bring home will grow! Give them plenty of space to receive the light and air necessary to flourish.

Doublefile Viburnum Tree

SMALL FLOWERING TREES WITH BIG IMPACT S P O T L I G H T O N O R N A M E N TA L T R E E S Planting trees comes with many benefits. From a design standpoint, they beautify the landscape, add a touch of shade, and provide food and shelter for songbirds. From a practical standpoint, they also reduce soil erosion and storm water runoff, conserve energy, increase property value and, of course, create oxygen. Even in the smallest yard, planting a tree or two can reap all these benefits without taking up a lot of space. Consider small, flowering, ornamental trees to create high impact color, fragrance, pollinator attraction, fall foliage, and focal point interest.

Dwarf Lilac Tree

Doublefile Viburnum Tree (Viburnum plicatum tomentosum) Produces large, creamy-white, lacecap flowers in spring over deer-resistant foliage that turns a gorgeous burgundy-red in fall topped with red berries. Works well in a narrow side yard with full sun to part shade where its branches can stretch out horizontally. Grows 12-20’ tall and wide. Dwarf Lilac Tree (Syringa spp. ‘Miss Kim’ & ‘Palabin’) Produces prolific panicles of fragrant, pink to lavender to white flowers in spring (later than common lilacs) from a compact, dense canopy grafted onto a standard tree trunk. Perfect for sunny spots near a walkway or next to the house. Grows 8-15’ tall x 5-10’ wide.

Korean Dogwood Tree

Korean Dogwood Tree (Cornus kousa) Blooms late spring with a plethora of pointy, white, bracted “flowers” that are 3-5” wide and later turn to 1” pinkish red, edible fruit. Disease-resistant foliage matures to shades of scarlet and purple. Vase-shaped and multi-stemmed, perfect for partially shaded patios or sunny corners. Grows 15-25’ tall and wide. Panicle Hydrangea Tree (Hydrangea paniculata) Blooms reliably on new wood every summer with panicles of creamy white, lime green, or rose-pink flowers, depending on variety. Works well tucked into tight spaces, sunny corners, and narrow borders. For best performance, prune to the size of a large basketball in late winter. Grows 8-15’ tall x 5-8’ wide.

CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT Meet a few members of “Petitti Garden Inspirations” who share your appreciation for garden life.

ANDY & DARLENE

- Lyndhurst, OH Over the last 15 years, Darlene & Andy have cultivated their backyard space to be a sanctuary, dubbing it the Darndy Oasis and describing it as their own little secret garden. The two are fans of cottage gardening, favoring perennials and hydrangeas for their in-ground plantings, but they also enjoy planting up their eclectic assortment of containers with annuals each spring. Because deer are a constant presence in their neck of the woods, they rely heavily on deer-resistant plants. In 2017, the couple was awarded Lyndhurst’s “Yard of Distinction” Award.

Andy & Darlene

Advice to new Gardeners: “Start small. Get a fun pot, put some plants in it, and water. Don’t be afraid – it’s just a plant, and it’s pretty!”

MORGAN - Hudson, OH A lifelong gardener, Morgan prefers to spend as much time as possible in her yard, continuously designing and crafting a home setting that reflects her passion for plants and her meticulous dedication to their care. With no formal irrigation system, Morgan wakes at 4am daily to water by hand. Just a few years ago, she and her husband built from scratch numerous garden beds along a plentiful stretch of fence, cutting out beds, preparing soil, and planting shrubs and perennials to form a dynamic space. Satisfied with what’s complete, Morgan is evolving her vision to include more annual color each spring. Impact of the Lifestyle: “Gardening is the biggest part of me, almost my identity. It just makes me happy…and I seem to be good at it!”

MICHAEL - Bedford, OH With a vision that began more than 20 years ago for a multi-level garden filled with hideaway paths and vignettes irrigated by a French drain, Mike has journaled the evolution of the gardens o that surround his home in 360 , and there’s truly a story behind every plant! Mike has 81 unique varieties of Hosta, not to mention countless other perennials, trees, and shrubs! Someone who does not require perfection, Mike sees silver linings – including the time he recognized an opportunity to transform the 12-ft stump of his Ash tree (impacted by borers) into living architecture that now hosts Ivy and Climbing Hydrangea. On the Social Aspect: “I like gardening because it gets you outside, meeting neighbors and creating more community with people.”

Each spring, during his Saturday morning radio show, Angelo Petitti emphasizes the importance of before planting. Likewise, AJ Petitti makes similar comments about during his weekly television segments. The reason they spend so much time educating on this topic is because they know what a difference it makes to the gardener’s success. A key product the Petittis recommend to improve your soil is

  - a made from composted ingredients harvested from local farming operations right here in Ohio. The name stems from the product’s ability to raise the soil’s pH away from an acidic or sour level, otherwise referred to as sweetening the soil.

petittigardencenter.com 18

Hard, compact, clay soil is the norm in Northeast Ohio, which works against the gardener by hindering plant growth. Clay soil also has a very low, or acidic, pH level, which is not welcoming for the majority of plants, flowers, and vegetables. By incorporating Sweet Peet® into your soil, you’ll break down the clay naturally and raise the pH level. This will release essential nutrients from the soil for optimal growth and production in your garden. After planting, use Sweet Peet® as a mulch to continue feeding the soil. Its unique texture will not crust over, and rainwater will penetrate to the roots and keep the soil moist and cool all summer. Not sure about your soil, whether it skews acidic or alkaline? Simple test kits are available at Petititi’s.

PERENNIAL GARDENING CALENDAR A M O N T H - B Y- M O N T H G U I D E T O W H AT B L O O M S W H E N

Perennials are plants that live at least three or more growing seasons in the garden. They may not bloom non-stop all growing season like annual plants do, but they are less maintenance and provide a diversity of beautiful blooms, awesome color, and texture from spring to fall. May is when many of our best, most reliable perennials get started! Hot colored Dianthus (Carnations or Pinks), coupled with cool periwinkle colored Nepeta (Catmint), make a showy and fragrant display. Nepeta’s flowers, foliage, and stem color will last for months to come. Do cut Dianthus stems for vases, so it will flush out with flowers again and again. Newer varieties like ‘Ruby Tuesday’ will bloom repeatedly with vigor.

y’ Dianthus ‘Ruby Tuesda

Brunnera ‘Jack of Diamonds’

In the shade, try the newest varieties of compact Aquilegia (Columbine) called the “Early Bird Series” to attract the first hummingbirds of the season! Plant them in front of the huge, silver heart-shaped foliage of Brunnera (Siberian bugloss) ‘Jack of Diamonds’ for a spectacular shade combo. Brunnera is topped with pastel blue forget-me-not flowers early spring, and its sparkling silver, deer-resistant foliage maintains its fabulous color and texture until fall frosts. We also recommend Baptisia (False Indigo), Clematis, Iris, and Peonies for more reliable May blooms.

JUNE SUNNY BLOOMS P E R E N N I A L S

JUNE BLOOMS The month of June is officially “Perennial Gardening Month”! It coincides with the arrival of the bountiful blooms of the daisy family. Gaillardia (Blanket Flower) and Leucanthemum superbum (Shasta Daisy), along with Coreopsis (Tickseed), and later blooming Echinacea (Coneflower), are just a sampling of the most reliable and prolific members. In sunny borders, plant any daisy-type flower with a strong, spiky perennial like Veronica (Speedwell) or Salvia (Meadow Sage) for a wonderful pest-resistant, pollinator-friendly show! Achillea (Yarrow) can be added to these companion families for a long-lasting, colorful, cutting garden trio. Shade garden options for June include the tail-end of Hellebores’ (Lenten Rose) four-month-long bloom cycle that begins in March! But the Dicentra eximia (Fern-leaf Bleeding Hearts) won’t stop there and will continue blooming into late summer. June also marks the beginning of the Astilbe (False Spirea) flowering season with early, middle, and late season varieties that can extend color and texture in the shade well into fall. The unique foliage and color of Hostas (Plantain Lily) and Hakonechloa (Japanese Forest Grass) provide plenty of foliage contrast in the shade.

While some annual flowers may need a haircut, or may even slow down in the heat of the summer, many perennials continue to flourish and thrive into July and August. Mid to late summer also brings out a bevy of blossoms for the pollinators! Combine Mint Family favorites like Monarda (Bee Balm), Agastache (Anise Hyssop), and Perovskia (Russian Sage) with more of the daisy family like Coreopsis (Tickseed), and Echinacea (Coneflower) for busy bees. Plant Heuchera (Coral bells) and perennial Geranium (Cranesbill Geranium) for the hummingbirds, especially if color is needed in a shadier spot. Of course, to support the butterflies, especially Monarchs, grow any member of the Asclepias (Milkweed) family. August is also prime bloom time for the phenomenal perennial Hibiscus (Hardy Hibiscus), which attracts hummingbirds and butterflies, alike. The new class of PW Annuals is simply show stopping! After experiencing rigorous trials, heat, drought, and disease testing, they all came out on top! These fantastic, award-winning performers are ready to adorn your landscape and containers with continuous color and unbeatable blooming for a bountiful display of beauty from late spring through fall frost. We begin with some fabulous foliage plants that accumulated 80+ trial garden awards from across the country! The entire series of Colorblaze® Coleus are exceptional annual plants that not only tolerate full sun to full shade conditions but can also be grown indoors as houseplants. Rediculous® is one of the tallest varieties in the series with glowing, red-burgundy, multi-tonal foliage, making a strong, showy thriller capable of growing close to 3’ tall and wide! ‘Strawberry Drop’ and ‘Chocolate Drop’ are like fraternal twins, sharing the same low, mounding habit, approximate 18” tall and wide size, and bright lime green foliage, but with slightly different colored veins. Combine one or two of the Coleus mentioned with the full sun to part shade tolerant Sweet Caroline Medusa™ Ipomoea (Sweet Potato Vine) for a glorious, fine to bold textured combination. Medusa™ has such unique, fingered, chartreuse foliage that it could be a fantastic, non-fussy, sun tolerant alternative to Boston Fern, growing 6-12” tall and 18-30” wide.

habits. With good heat tolerance, they perform the best in the landscape or large containers where their roots can stay hydrated. Seeing red? Bright Lights® Red Osteospermum (8-12” tall and wide), and Luscious® Royal Red Zone™ Lanatana (approx. 20” by 20”), will spice up any bland garden. Plant these award-winning sun lovers in hot and dry areas where they can show off their continuous blooming and self-cleaning, filler habits. Pollinators will flock to their fiery color, daisy and trumpet shapes, respectively, and their profuse pollen and nectar stores. Speaking of pollinators, Proven Winners’ superior collection of award-winning Supertunias® (Petunia hybrid) and Superbells® (Calibrachoa hybrid) make the perfect attractant for hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees with their repeat blooming, trumpetshaped flowers in multiple colors, patterns, and sizes. Superbells® Coral Sun and Honeyberry™ share 38 trial awards for abundant blossoms, heat tolerance, and extended fall color. They perform best in container gardens where they receive excellent drainage, flourishing with a low cascading form of 6-12” tall by 1224” wide. Supertunias® possess the same attributes as Superbells® but with larger flowers and more vigorous filling and spilling habits. They are never-fussy, selfcleaning mainstays in both containers and landscapes. Royal Velvet® has been improved with a richer, deeper plum-purple color and scent. Mini Vista® Pink Star is a knock-out with awesome vigor and medium pink stars over white trumpets. These Proven Winners are available at a Petitti Garden Center near you to combine low maintenance with imaginative combinations for endless possibilities.

MADE FOR THE SHADE ANNUAL PLANTS TO BRIGHTEN A DARK BORDER

Wanting to garden in the shade is a very common interest we hear from customers. It can be challenging at first, but very rewarding when it all comes together. Whether you’re working with a northern exposure foundation bed that only receives indirect light, or a heavily wooded border with only an hour or two of dappled sunlight through tree branches, there are many plants that will thrive in your shady conditions. It’s important to remember flowering may be at a minimum, but foliage, color, and texture will provide an outstanding, showy display. And, because annuals get installed every year, and grow their hearts out, they make the perfect pops of color in the shadiest gardens. In our Annuals greenhouses, look for the sky-blue shade signs (see next page). There, you will find numerous varieties for Part Shade (4-6 hours of sunlight) and Shade (4 hours or less). Try to narrow down your selection by choosing a color combination you prefer. For this heavily wooded area, the fiery bursts of burnt orange and deep red, with brightly contrasting chartreuse green and touches of blue, worked well to highlight the garden bed, and also the customer’s tool shed. The Begonia, Impatiens, Coleus, Torenia, and Lysmachia families are all spectacular shade performers, along with Caladium, Fuchsia, Sweet Potato Vine, Nicotiana, Pansies, and Violas. Also consider some common houseplants like Tradescantia, Ivies, Hypoestes, and many others to add summer interest to shady sites. Planting at the base of trees can be difficult, so use Petitti Planting Mix to raise the soil level by mounding up the spots where you wish to install your annual shade plants. Pay attention to plant tags and space the plants accordingly. Plant thrillers, or the tallest plants in the

back and spillers, or the smallest plants, in the front. Try to create “pools of color” by staggering but spacing the same type of plant. This will provide a showier display, especially when viewed from a distance. Dig your planting holes twice as wide as the pot but the same depth. Apply Espoma Biotone® Starter Plus to the hole (approximately 1-2 teaspoons per 4” plant). Gently break up the root system as you plant, and backfill with soil. Finish the garden by applying one tablespoon of Osmocote (green cap) per 4” plant, and water thoroughly and deeply over 30-60 minutes. Apply 1-2 inches of mulch to reduce any weeds, retain moisture, and to create a neat, finished appearance. Then, sit back and watch your annual shade garden flourish!

SHADE GARDEN TIPS: • Due to tree root competition, watering maintenance may initially be every few days, then once a week. Always water deeply and thoroughly. • Midsummer, reapply Osmocote to maintain best flowering and foliage development. • Even though most annuals are self-cleaning, deadhead and trim lightly to induce denser growth, branching, and flowering.

PLANTING FEATURED: • Begonia ‘Santa Cruz Sunset’ • Coleus ‘Ruby Slipper’ & ‘Rodeo Drive’ • Lysimachia ‘Aurea’ (Golden Moneywort) • SunPatiens® Electric Orange • Torenia ‘Summer Wave Bouquet Blue’

GROWING YOUR BEST ANNUAL CONTAINER 5 H A C K S T H AT H E L P F R O M S TA R T T O F I N I S H

Container gardening is the hands-down easiest way to add living color to any outdoor space. It’s simply a matter of knowing how much sunlight your space receives, deciding on a color scheme you like, and choosing plants accordingly. The basic process we recommend for planting up a container always includes fresh Petitti Planting Mix™, Bio-tone® starter fertilizer, and a sprinkling of Osmocote® slow-release, granular plant food. Assuming you’ve got those basics covered, here are a 5 extra “hacks” we can share to bring out the best in your annual container combo from spring to fall!

#1 MATCH SIZE TO QUANTITY You can certainly use the equation A = πr² to determine the area you’re planting, but it’s easier to trace and cut a circle that’s the same size as the pot opening, using paper or cardboard. Bring that cut-out to the garden center and use it as a guide to select the number of plants that fit inside the circle, leaving some space between to avoid overcrowding.

#2 REDUCE POT WEIGHT Your planter may have a deep design but that doesn’t mean you need to fill it top to bottom with soil. Employ a reusable Ups-A-Daisy® planter insert to use less soil, reduce planter weight, and ensure good drainage.

#3 VARY HEIGHT FOR DESIGN A mix of elevations makes the combo more interesting. Choose a tall “Thriller” plant for the center. Add a few “Filler” plants around it. Finish with a “Spiller” that will trail out of the pot over time.

#4 MANAGE SOIL MOISTURE

Hydretain® granules

Containers can dry out quickly in the heat of summer. Apply Hydretain® granules to help retain soil moisture, minimize any drought stress the plants may incur, and extend intervals between watering.

#55REJUVENATE WITH A HAIRCUT If the container develops a leggy or stretched look later in summer, trim it back a few inches to tighten the habit and revitalize flowering. Flowers will return quickly, and in abundance, with a dose of fertilizer or plant food.

In the deck scene shown, the homeowner was working with eastern exposure that receives 6+ hours of direct sunlight (Full Sun) and had opted for a red-pink-white theme. 15" POT SHOWN INCLUDES:

TROPICAL PARADISE IN NORTHEAST OHIO H O W T O I N C O R P O R AT E E X O T I C TROPICAL PLANTS If you have hot, sunny sites in the garden, deck, porch, or patio (no pool necessary), and love the swaying of palms fronds in the Lake Erie breeze (wink, wink), and covet the vibrant, exotic blooms of Bougainvillea, Dipladenia, and more, then these inspiring pages are for you!

CARING FOR TROPICALS Tropical plants are easy to grow and, to be successful, you’ll want to mimic their natural environment. Think of your favorite tropical places that you’ve visited or have read about - Hawaii, Bali, Mexico - and mimic that setting. In the summer, NE Ohio can get very humid, which is great for tropicals. Temperatures reaching above 85°F is also not uncommon, and we get our fair share of sunny, breezy days. So as long as you provide routine watering and feeding, your tropicals will be happy as clams.

PERFECT FOR CONTAINERS Planting tropical plants in containers is a great choice! They can be enjoyed outdoors starting mid-May, after the last spring frost, all the way through early fall. All tropical foliage and flowering plants combine well together, so long as they share the same light and soil moisture requirements. In the scene shown, full sun and well-draining soil moisture is best. We used single, showy specimen plants like green-and-yellow striped Dracaena ‘Kiwi’ (A) and vibrant violet Bougainvillea, displaying them with a few imaginative combinations. The bold shield foliage of Alocasia ‘Polly’ (B) is a thriller among the fillers of Croton ‘Banana’ (C) and tricolored Lantana (D). A bright rose-pink Dipladenia (E) is used for a spiller. In a large container, underplant a Majesty Palm with hot colored foliage and flowers. Different colors of Croton, Dipladenia, and Lantana were used, along with a “flaming sword” Bromeliad for an additional filler and variegated Algerian Ivy for an additional spiller.

TRANSITIONING INDOORS FOR WINTER Believe it or not, tropical plants can be overwintered indoors. Just follow this process to be successful: Late in the season, after the first couple of fall frosts have passed, and the tropical plants begin their dormancy, cut them back to a manageable size for indoor care. Spray them with a hard stream of cold water, then an application of Neem Oil or insecticidal soap to remove any lingering insects. Next, apply a granular houseplant systemic insecticide to any non-edible tropicals to protect them for 6-8 weeks indoors. Finally, move them inside with temperatures between 55-80°F and expose them to as much sunlight as possible over winter, grow lights included.

NEW VEGGIE DELIGHTS With so many new veggie varieties available, we narrowed it down to the top handful including outstanding tomatoes and awesome peppers! You’ll have great success with any of these varieties in the traditional garden, raised beds, and also in pots. Tomato ‘Tidy Treats’ This variety is no stranger to the garden. We have been growing this cherry tomato for three seasons now, and we are amazed by its compact, 3-5’, indeterminate habit, perfect for small space container gardening and also in-ground planting. Once it gets going, it blooms non-stop and produces perfectly round, 1” tomatoes that are juicy, sweet and just the right size for popping in your mouth or on top of salads. It does require staking/caging due to its heavy yields all growing season. Tomato Heirloom Marriage™ This series includes fantastic hybrid plants that combine the superior qualities of two heirloom varieties with upgraded vigor for earlier, more productive harvests. ‘Genuwine’ marries the rich, Italian flavors of ‘Costoluto Genovese’ with the all-time superior taste of ‘Brandywine’. Big, beautiful, 11 oz., ruby red tomatoes with an old-fashioned, ribbed, squat form and delectable essence are the result. It’s awesome to slice and eat any way you like! Keep in mind the tomatoes develop on a big, indeterminate vine that needs a lot of space and a sturdy support. Pepper ‘Grande Red’ This vigorous, sweet Italian, horn-shaped pepper is seedless! It produces pointed fruit averaging 6” long by 2” wide with outstanding, crisp texture and yummy, super-sweet flavor that can be harvested anytime from deep green to a dark red. To maintain seedless peppers, plant them among tomatoes and eggplants, away from other pepper varieties in the garden. Provide support for its 3-4’ by 2-2.5’ habit. These peppers are wonderfully delicious in salads, and especially mouthwatering when grilled, fried, or stuffed with cheese.

Tomato ‘Tidy Treats’

Pepper ‘Grande Red’

Pepper ‘Purple Beauty’

Pepper ‘Purple Beauty’ This variety produces an attractive, medium-sized, 3-4 lobed, green bell pepper with glossy skin that ripens to a deep eggplant purple, and later to deep red. Its 3” by 3” block fruit is very firm, crisp, and wonderfully sweet. This bell pepper is compact, productive, and perfect for both container growing and garden beds. Use it in salads, stir fries, or stuffed. Adds unique color to any dish.

THE STORY OF PETITTI'S LOCALLY GROWN & FAMILY OWNED “When you look back at my beginnings, I started with no money and I really didn’t have any experience. I took it day-by-day to learn the horticulture industry. What drove the growth was my belief in pushing the envelope. Commitment, and belief.” – Angelo Petitti

t h e s t o r y o f p e t i t t i ’s

1963 Angelo Petitti, the son of a farmer and nephew of an avid gardener, immigrated to the United States in 1963 at the age of 16 from Faeto, a small mountain village with a population of 600 in southeast Italy. For three years, he worked at Pick-n-Pay Supermarket, and as a busboy at a local restaurant, to support himself while attending Kent State University night classes to pursue political science. Angelo also leveraged his innate sense of the land to do part-time landscaping and, eventually, his interest in horticulture became his full-time passion.

1966 Angelo started Petitti Landscape Company. His brother, Domenico, joined him and they bought an oversized garage in 1969 in Oakwood Village to store their trucks, landscape equipment, and plant material. Soon, passersby began to visit, inquiring about the plants, and the brothers found themselves a complementary business.

1971 On the site of the old garage, Angelo Petitti opened the first Petitti Garden Center building in Oakwood Village, and a Northeast Ohio tradition was born.

In 1975, Angelo married Maria, who immigrated to the U.S. in 1966 from the same small town. She became active in administration of the business and put her photography talents to work, using plant photographs to create helpful plant signage for customers.

“I really love everything I do. For me, it’s not a job. In the morning, I can’t wait to get up and go. I go seven days a week, and I still go to all the places. Nothing has changed.”

1980s Soon, AJ, Andria, and Lisa were born, and the business became a family affair. Angelo opened 6 seasonal locations in the parking lots of area Gold Circle discount department stores, which Angelo credits for helping him learn how to operate multiple locations. Angelo opened the Tallmadge location in 1985, the oldest existing location after Oakwood Village. After Gold Circle dismantled in 1988, Angelo quickly recreated his seasonal operations, opening again in the parking lots of local Sears department stores in 1989. This is also when Angelo decided to shed landscaping services and focus on developing his retail garden centers.

CULTIVATING KNOWLEDGE The 1980s is also when the Gardening with Angelo Radio Show hit the local airwaves on WERE-AM. It continued for four decades, moving to WRMR-AM in the ‘90s, WDOK-FM in the ‘00s, and today airs Saturday mornings Mar-Oct on WTAM 1100.

1990-1991

The next defining moment came in 1990 when Angelo officially became a grower, transforming the Oakwood Village location into a growing facility for annuals and perennials. On the heels of that, in 1991 Angelo purchased 30 acres of farmland in Madison, OH to begin growing trees and shrubs for his stores.

Growing at the Oakwood Village location

petittigardencenter.com 42

1996 Angelo toured garden centers in England, which he credits for opening his eyes to what the garden center experience could be back in America. Upon returning from his trip, he re-built the Oakwood Village location from the ground up, upgrading for the first time to provide a covered shopping environment and concrete flooring. Another key turning point came this year when Angelo deepened his commitment to growing his own plants by purchasing and redeveloping a 12-acre greenhouse facility in Columbia Station. Today, the facility is comprised of 45 acres known as Casa Verde – where 4 million annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, and indoor plants are cultivated each year to supply fresh plants daily for Petitti Garden Centers.

Petitti Strongsville

“It’s the community and the employees that have made this company a success and helped it grow.”

2001 Using knowledge gleaned from European garden center tours, and with a clear vision for evolution, Angelo took a giant leap in 2001. With the help of a world-renowned garden center designer from the U.K., he opened the Strongsville location as a 14-acre Victorian garden conservatory. It was the largest garden center in the country, a first of its kind in the United States, and it met the comprehensive gardener’s lifestyle by offering everything from plants, pottery, and lawn & garden supplies to patio furniture, home décor, and garden accents. Angelo followed up in 2002 by acquiring the Boardman location and redeveloping it as a Petitti Garden Center.

2007 Expanding significantly on the farming presence that began with a small amount of land in 1991, Angelo purchased 700 additional acres of farmland, making it possible to serve local landscapers and wholesale plant customers outside of Northeast Ohio. Today, the now 1,300-acre collection of farm sites in Lake County is where 3 million trees, shrubs, and grasses are cultivated over a period of many years to supply Petitti Garden Centers with fresh nursery plants daily.

“When I see people enjoying their day at the garden center, that is the thing that I enjoy. To me, that is the goal.” Angelo built and opened the Avon location in 2007, now the largest Petitti Garden Center. Once again demonstrating European inspiration and influence, Avon features a galleria-like structure designed and fabricated in Holland that is 45 feet high, 50 feet wide, and 420 feet in length, which Angelo favorably nicknames Garden Street.

Petitti Avon

Angelo acquired the Bainbridge location in 2010, beloved as a most charming Petitti Garden Center. Angelo opened the Mentor location in 2011 in Erie Commons shopping plaza near Great Lakes Mall.

2018 Angelo opened 3 stores in 1 year! • The Canton-Jackson Township location in the heart of the Belden Village shopping district • The Brunswick location, which was acquired and redeveloped as a Petitti Garden Center • The Boardman redevelopment, which now draws gardeners from Greater Youngstown and Pittsburgh

TODAY The locally grown and family-owned business Angelo Petitti seeded in a small garage in Oakwood Village has blossomed into a beloved Northeast Ohio brand with 9 year-round locations serving the Greater Cleveland, Akron-Canton, and Youngstown communities.

DECORATING WITH HOUSEPLANTS FRESH GREENERY FOR EVERY ROOM

Grouping of broad and fine leaf fern varieties.

Decorating with live houseplants is easy and beneficial. It rewards us with a more oxygen-rich environment that, in turn, leads to increased productivity, decreased stress, more restful sleep, and many more good feelings. What’s more, every living or working space has the potential to support a houseplant’s needs. It’s simply a matter of knowing the plant’s lighting requirements and soil moisture needs, and then placing it appropriately. When decorating, consider displaying plants at different levels, from floor to ceiling, and also in unexpected places. Peruse the following tips to expand your “green” family and transform your rooms into a healthy, living oasis. Start small with one space in one room. The living room tends to be a natural beginning spot. Try placing a tall floor plant as a focal point in one corner, like an Areca Palm. Once you slowly become accustomed to its care, maybe add a couple other plants of different shapes or sizes, such as a rounded Monstera and a variegated Chinese Evergreen. Grouping plants in odd numbers makes the display appear more natural and oasis-like. Next, move plant material to side tables, console units, and shelving. Vertical displays are also useful to soften long, empty wall space. In direct sun and bright light areas of a room, succulents and cacti take up little surface area and are best neglected, water wise. A grouping of broad and fine leaf ferns near a

comfy seating area with medium indirect light provides increased humidity that benefits both the plants, humans, and pets nearby. Coffee tables are the perfect place to show off a proud plant parent’s collection. In this case, Chinese Evergreens (Aglaonema spp.) in assorted colors, sizes, and pretty pottery flourish in medium light in the middle of the room. To gain more vertical interest, place easy-care Air Plants in sconces, on driftwood, and on shelves with exposure to bright to medium indirect light, and intermittently spray mist them. Houseplants in hanging baskets or macrame holders can brighten the higher corners of a room and are always in style. Think Spider Plant, Pothos, Ferns, and Ivies. In dining areas, arrange living plants instead of cut flowers in vases because they live longer and are less scented. Bonsai are the perfect size for the dinner table in bright to medium light, short enough to never block a dining companion’s view! Houseplants also have the capability to freshen rooms and absorb odors! Calathea make great bathroom companions. ‘Makoyana’ hanging from the shower curtain rod is an unexpected pop of color to ‘lancifolia’ basking in the artificial light on the counter. Calathea appreciate the extra humidity and any excess water from the sink or shower, and they help to liven up an otherwise sterile room. Add houseplants to the bedroom to develop a green escape. Many houseplants still transpire at night, supplying essential oxygen while you are comfortably asleep. Place them on nightstands, dressers, shelves, and corners. It’s almost like camping, sleeping under the stars, surrounded by nature - just climate controlled and with less insects! Look for bold foliage plants to make you feel surrounded in a tropical paradise, like Alocasia (Elephant Ears). They prefer part shade to medium indirect light indoors, plus evenly moist soil. The best part is, you can enjoy them indoors year-round or outdoors in the summer, which is the same case for all houseplants. Pteris ‘Albo’ Fern in macrame hanger

HOUSEPLANT HACKS • All houseplants, except succulents, enjoy humidity. Display them in groups and place their pots on top of a tray filled with pebbles and water. • Fertilize houseplants during the spring-fall growing season, according to the packaging. African Violets and Orchids are the exception, and can be fertilized “weakly, weekly”. • Keep sticky traps and insecticidal soap, Neem oil, or houseplant spray on hand in case issues develop. • Because drainage is key with all plants, it’s best to grow your houseplants in pottery with drainage holes and separate/attached saucers. A pot with no drainage hole is considered decorative, not functional. In that case, place the plant in its plastic grower pot into the decorative container, removing the plant-and-grower pot combo to water. Let it drain before placing it back in the decorative pot.
