2021 AUTO PREVIEW 2023

WELCOME!

The 2022 Auto and Truck Show is right around the corner and count me in as being very excited! After 2-years of cancelations the 2021 San Antonio Auto Show was back in person, and it was stellar. And if I know the San Antonio Auto Dealers the ’22 Auto and Truck Show will be bigger and better than ever! I cannot wait to walk around the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center (November 11th – 13th) and inspect all the new makes and models. I have been fascinated with cars and trucks since I was a young child playing with my matchbox and hot wheels and whether I am in the market for a new or used car or not I cannot call my year complete without attending the Auto and Truck Show. As I look around it appears that nearly every industry is transforming or is in transition. Some industrial experts and social scientists argue that his type of transformation/transition is ever present, but many experts point to the pandemic and the rapid adoption of the gig economy as an unanticipated accelerator of consumer change. The impact of “on demand consumption” is touching everything from healthcare (tele-health is rapidly growing), to how we watch (or don’t go to) a movie, to how we buy a car/truck or what kind of car/truck we buy (combustion or electric). We are living through this generation’s version of the industrial revolution. Yes, change is hard but the best way to handle the unexpected obstacle is by being proactive in the big-ticket areas of our lives. Next to buying or signing a lease on a home many of us will never make a more financially impactful decision than buying a car or truck. It is much easier to decide when you are informed. The Auto and Truck Show is an invaluable source of information. In the next 12-months 460,000 of San Antonio’s 2,430,0000 residents will make a vehicle buying decision. That is an incredible metric. Even more incredible; 8.8% MORE San Antonians will buy a vehicle in 2023 than in 2022. These metrics line up with the dramatic population growth our city is experiencing. According to the US Census, San Antonio was the fast-growing city in the United States between 2020-2021. When you couple the change happening inside of the automotive space and the growth San Antonio is experiencing you want to make sure that you have all the necessary information to make a great decision on a big decision. So, whether you are or are not in the market for a new car, chances are that a vehicle decision is right around the corner and there is no better place to do some research than November 11-13 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center! I will see you at the 2022 Auto and Truck Show! Mark Medici Publisher, San Antonio Express-News

2023 AUTO PREVIEW

HERE COMES THE AUTO SHOW!

The 53rd-annual San Antonio Auto and Truck Show opens this coming Friday, Nov. 11, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center downtown. Show hours will be 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Presented by the San Antonio Auto Dealers, this year’s event will feature more than 200 new vehicles under one roof, allowing visitors to see all of them without having to drive to dealerships all over town. This year, a variety of electric vehicles will take center stage and be involved throughout the show. The show will include new 2023 cars and trucks from a variety of manufacturers; ride and drive opportunities outside the convention center, conducted by Chevrolet and Toyota; the new Guess This Mess challenge; the Subaru Loves Pets adoption event; and the all-new SA Drive Electric event led by CPS Energy. For a chance at winning $5,000, the Guess This Mess challenge lets show visitors try to guess what the year, make and model is of a salvage yard-crushed vehicle that will be on display. “The show will wow you with the newest cars and trucks, super-cool exotics, and rideand-drive events, plus fun kids’ activities, shopping in the Marketplace, and much, much more,” the dealers association says. About 70 new-car dealerships will be participating, along with automakers representing 18 different vehicle franchises. The show will display many of the new cars, trucks, SUVs and specialty vehicles on sale for model years 2022 and 2023. “Every year, the manufacturers give us such a treat with the new cars and trucks that roll into the show, and this year will be no exception,” said San Antonio Auto Dealers President Pam Crail. “We always want to enhance the show with new attractions as well, and this year

our Guess this Mess contest, and CPS Energy's SA Drive Electric, will be two amazing additions, among many others." Also featured will be exotic cars, interactive elements and giveaways. With the collaboration of CPS Energy, show attendees will have the opportunity to experience EVs and EV charging in an up-close-and-personal way, to provide education and awareness for consumers, the dealers’ group said. And, of course, the show visitors will have the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the featured ride-and-drive electric vehicles. The show also will highlight the 2023 Green Truck of the Year, an award that will be announced by the Green Car Journal during Media Morning on Friday before the show opens to the public. “Battle of the Bands” returns to the show on Saturday after a two-year hiatus. It will feature four local high school drumlines performing to entertain show visitors and to raise money for charity. Other philanthropic elements will include the Ferrari Fill Up, benefiting Ferrari Kid; pet adoptions, sponsored by Subaru Loves Pets; and a special “virtual reality” (VR) motorcycle ride exhibit featuring the nonprofit Guardians of the Children. Admission is free for children ages 5 and under; $6 for ages 6-10; $12 for adults, purchased in advance online; $15 for adults at the door; and $8 for military and seniors. Active duty, retired military and veterans will be admitted free on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11. Tickets are available for advance purchase online at saautoshow.com. As usual, the list of vehicles planned for exhibit is subject to last-minute changes because of availability and delivery issues, so don’t be disappointed if one of the vehicles you wanted to see – including some featured in the auto show special section -- doesn’t make it to the show. San Antonio’s auto dealers and their association have worked for months now to put this show together, and more than 100,000 people are expected to attend. G.Chamber Williams

For the first time, the Allison 10-speed automatic transmission is now standard on both of the Silverado HD’s powertrains: the standard 6.6-liter V-8 gas engine and the available Duramax turbodiesel. For the Touring L, all-wheel drive adds $2,995, while Limited and Pinnacle models get the upgrade for $2,795 each. Hybrids models, which come only with front-wheel drive, include the Touring L ($47,500), Limited ($52,500) and Pinnacle ($56,050). Destination charge is $1,595 for all models. Under the hood of the gasoline-only models is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine producing 287 horsepower and 262 foot-pounds of torque. It’s connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid features a 3.6-liter Atkinsoncycle V-6 engine, coupled with an electric motor for total system horsepower of 260. With a combination of battery power and the modified Pentastar V-6 engine, the hybrid has a range of 530 miles on a single tank (17 gallons) of regular gasoline. As for the plug-in feature, unlike a basic hybrid vehicle, which only recharges its battery from gasoline-engine operation while driving, the Pacifica can be connected to an outside power source to recharge its onboard battery. The EPA rates the vehicle at 80 mpg/e (miles per gallon/equivalent), based on everyday driving using a combination of gasoline and electric power.

2023 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE: Chevrolet’s

2023 DODGE DURANGO: Dodge recently

large crossover, the Traverse, got a “freshened” exterior just last year, and it moves into 2023 with no key changes. It continues as a top seller in its segment, with prices starting at $34,520 (plus $1,195 freight) for the base LS model with eight-passenger seating and front-wheel drive. Prices run as high as $53,600 for the High Country model with all-wheel drive. In between are the LT Cloth ($37,245), LT Leather ($40,940), RS ($45,245), Premier ($47,400) and High Country ($52,200) front-wheel-drive models. All-wheel drive is available on all models. The newest exterior styling is bolder than before, with lots of creases and edges – unlike the rounded exterior of the previous generation. Some of the Traverse’s new exterior styling was inspired by the big Chevrolet sport utility vehicles, the Tahoe and Suburban. Premium features include items such as chrome accents, LED signature lighting and available D-Optic LED headlights. Also standard is the revised Chevrolet Infotainment System 3 Plus system with navigation, eight-inch diagonal color touch screen, voice recognition, Bluetooth audio streaming, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The HD Surround Vision system is standard on RS, Premier and High Country models. Now standard is the Buckle to Drive feature, which prevents the vehicle from shifting out of Park for up to 20 seconds if the driver’s seatbelt is not fastened. Hitch Guidance with Hitch View (including trailering assist guidelines) is now offered with the trailering package. With the last makeover, one thing that was retained in the new generation is the generous third-row space, particularly the legroom, which makes that seat just as comfortable for adults as for children. This is one of the few big crossovers that can achieve that. There is also ample cargo room and overall interior space. The Traverse features the Chevy Safety Assist system, which includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indicator, Forward Collision Alert, and IntelliBeam auto high-beam control.

revived the Durango, which is a roomy crossover utility vehicle with up to three rows of seating. It’s based on the architecture of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Blind-spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection are now standard across the Durango lineup. Durango SXT and GT models deliver more standard content, as follows: SXT: Three-row, sevenpassenger seating, power driver’s seat, ParkSense rear park assist system and bright roof rails. GT: Remote start system, heated front seats and steering wheel, and power liftgate. The Plus Group offers standard Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop, Advanced Brake Assist, Lane Departure Warning Plus and more standard content on GT and R/T models: GT Plus: Memory system, rain-sensing automatic wipers, Bright cargo area scuff plates, leather seats with suede inserts and first and second-row heated seats. R/T Plus: Nappa leather with perforated inserts and accent stitching, sunroof, Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, Harman Kardon premium audio system and Premium Interior Package (includes premium wrapped instrument panel and Dinamica soft-touch headliner). The Blacktop Package now includes the performance hood on the GT and P265/50R20 performance all-season tires on GT and R/T models. Also added in 2021 was the supercharged 710-horsepower Durango SRT Hellcat 6.2-liter V-8 model, a high-performance track vehicle masquerading as a family cruiser. Even in base form, Durango is a stylish, comfortable family hauler with space for up to seven passengers, two in the front, three in the middle, and two in the rear. There is also Durango SRT version with a 475-horsepower 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 engine with 470 foot-pounds of torque. Other engines are a 3.6-liter, 295-horsepower Pentastar V-6, or a 360-horsepower, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. Also included is a standard eight-speed automatic transmission.

2023 AUTO PREVIEW 2023 FORD EXPLORER: Ford’s

long-running, best-selling SUV, the venerable Explorer, was completely redesigned three years ago, with lighter, leaner, stronger construction and the broadest Explorer lineup ever. It also switched back to standard rear-wheel drive from the last generation’s front drive. Four-wheel drive is optional. A hybrid version has been added to the lineup, as well. The Platinum model now has even more technology and comforts for both driver and passengers, including an available 10.1-inch portrait-mounted touch screen with full-screen maps, traffic-sensing Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assist, and available Reverse Brake Assist and Active Park Assist 2.0. Also, from Ford Performance, is the all-new Explorer ST, the most-powerful Explorer to date. Its specially tuned 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine is projected to produce 400 horsepower and 415 foot-pounds of torque, giving it a top track speed of 143 mph. The Explorer Hybrid’s 3.3-liter engine and electric motor produce 318 system horsepower combined. The hybrid version is projected to return an EPA-estimated range of more than 500 miles between fillups in rear-wheel-drive configuration. Other features of the new Explorer include a 10-speed automatic transmission, available Intelligent Four-Wheel Drive plus a Terrain Management System featuring seven selectable drive modes. Three rows of seating are standard, with a capacity of up to seven passengers, including two in the third row, which can even accommodate adults. Prices start around $37,000.

2023 HYUNDAI SANTA FE: The five-

passenger Hyundai Santa Fe midsize crossover received a minor restyling two years ago, along with new engines and the addition of its first hybrid version. But also arriving was the new top-of-the-line Calligraphy gasoline-only model, which comes in front- or all-wheel-drive configurations. The front-drive Calligraphy model for 2023 starts at $42,050, while the all-wheel-drive begins at $43,750. Regular gas models come in five trim levels for 2023, up from four the previous year, with the addition of the midlevel XRT model. Prices for the XRT are $33,700 (front drive) and $35,400 (AWD). The base gasoline Santa Fe is the SE model ($28,200) with front-wheel drive and the new base normally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. With all-wheel drive, the SE begins at $29,900. Next up is the SEL ($31,900, FWD; $33,600, AWD), followed by the XRT. As with the SE model, the SEL and XRT come with the base 2.5-liter engine. Above the XRT is the Limited model ($40,050, FWD; $41,750, AWD). The first three trim levels come with a conventional eight-speed automatic transmission, while the Limited and Calligraphy, with the turbo engine, get an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission. As for the hybrids, they come in two types: the standard hybrid, and a plug-in version, whose battery can be recharged from an external power source. Regular hybrids start about $34,000 and range to about $41,000, while the plug-in versions range from about $40,000 to $47,000. The Santa Fe’s base 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine cranks out 191 horsepower and 182 foot-pounds of torque. Adding some serious power is the turbocharged 2.5-liter, which puts out 277 horsepower and 311 foot-pounds of torque. That compares with 235 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque in the 2.0-liter turbo that it replaced from 2020. The hybrids have a completely different drivetrain. It includes a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, cranking out 178 horsepower and 195 foot-pounds of torque, coupled with a 44.2 kilowatt electric motor. The electric motor is powered by a 270-volt lithium-ion battery pack. A six-speed automatic transmission delivers power to the wheels. The plug-in version of the hybrid gives the Santa Fe pure-electric driving capability without having to use gasoline. EPA fuel-economy ratings for the hybrid are 33 mpg city/30 highway/32 combined. That compares with 25 mpg city/28 highway/26 combined for the base 2.5-liter engine and front-wheel drive (22/25/24 with all-wheel drive); and 22/28/25 for the 2.5-liter turbo engine with front drive (21/28/24 with AWD).

2023 FORD MAVERICK: The all-new Ford Maverick, introduced for 2022, revives an old nameplate, but this time it’s not an economy car, it’s an economy hybrid truck, starting around $20,000. Maverick is a five-passenger, four-door pickup, with a full-hybrid powertrain and a projected EPAestimated rating of 40 mpg city fuel economy and 500 miles of range on a single tank of gas. It’s a carbased compact truck with a unibody design and the first pickup in America with a standard full-hybrid powertrain. The 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder hybrid powertrain delivers 191 horsepower when combined with the electric motor, and 155 foot-pounds of torque. Standard is a continuously variable transmission driving the front wheels. It features an in-house-designed and manufactured electric traction motor, and has estimated fuel economy of 40 mpg city and 500 miles of range on a single tank of gas. There is a standard payload of 1,500 pounds and the volume to carry a standard ATV, plus it has the capability to tow 2,000 pounds -- enough for a pair of personal watercraft or a pop-up camper trailer. Those who want more capability can upgrade to a 2.0-liter EcoBoost gasoline engine delivering 250 horsepower and 277 foot-pounds of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. Equipped with the optional 4K Tow Package, conventional towing doubles to 4,000 pounds with the 2.0-liter engine. 2023 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE: The

five-passenger Jeep Grand Cherokee was completely redesigned for 2022, bringing the styling of the previous year’s all-new three-row Grand Cherokee L model to the two-row version. Introduced for 2021, the L model brought the first threerow, seven-passenger Grand Cherokee, making it more suited to larger families. For 2022, the L model returned unchanged from the previous year, while the five-passenger standard Grand Cherokee got the same styling and other changes introduced on the L model. Jeep has also introduced the first electrified Grand Cherokee, called the 4xe, along with the ultimate off-road Grand Cherokee, the new Trailhawk. This is the fifth generation of the Grand Cherokee, which was originally introduced for 1992. It brings all-new architecture, the new plug-in hybrid powertrain, an all-new exterior design and all-new interior with world-class craftsmanship and first-to-market technologies, Jeep says. Available in the Grand Cherokee Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve, the 4xe propulsion system combines two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, a 2.0-liter turbocharged fourcylinder engine, and TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. It has a combined 375 horsepower and 470 foot-pounds of torque. The Grand Cherokee 4xe is capable of going an estimated 25 miles on a single battery charge while operating on the electric motor alone.

20232021 AUTO AUTO PREVIEW 2023 KIA SPORTAGE:

2022/23 KIA SORENTO: The midsize

Kia has completely redesigned the five-passenger Sportage compact crossover utility vehicle for 2023, and has given the vehicle its first hybrid version. The Sportage hybrid comes with a 227-horserpower gasolineelectric powertrain that can achieve 43 mpg and drive more than 500 miles on a full tank of fuel. Its powertrain is anchored by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder GDI (gasoline direct injection) engine, with 177 horsepower and 195 foot-pounds of torque. It’s paired with a 44kW electric motor with 59.3 horsepower, and a starter-generator (electric motor) rated at 17.4 horsepower. There is a high-output 1.49 kWh lithium-ion battery. Motive power is delivered to the wheels by a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters for simulated manual shifting. A pushbutton system selects Drive, Reverse and Park choices. The Sportage Hybrid comes in three trims: LX, EX and SX-Prestige. Prices begin at $27,290 (plus $1,295 freight) for the base LX with front-wheel drive. After that, there are three all-wheel-drivetrains: the LX ($29,090), EX ($30,990), and SX-Prestige ($36,190). There is not a huge price differential to move up to a hybrid model. The base Sportage LX with front drive starts at $25,990, which means you would pay only $1,300 more to get the hybrid powertrain. Other gasoline-only models include the LX AWD ($27,790); EX ($27,990, FWD; $29,790, AWD); and SX ($31,490, FWD; $33,290, AWD). Regular gasoline-only models come with a normally aspirated 2.5-liter gasoline four-cylinder GDI engine with 187 horsepower and 178 footpounds of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. With the redesign, the Sportage moves into its fifth generation. It’s 7.1 inches longer, at 183.5 inches, and has a 3.4-inch longer wheelbase, at 108.5 inches. It’s also a half-inch wider and taller, and has more rear legroom (best in class, Kia says), at 41.3 inches. There is also more cargo space – 39.6 cubic feet, with a dual-level cargo floor. The rear bench seat has reclining backs with a 60/40 split-folding feature. Sportage’s Active AWD system uses electro-hydraulic coupling with a center-locking differential to distribute power between front and rear wheels depending on road and driving conditions.

Kia Sorento three-row crossover utility vehicle entered its fourth generation for 2021, and continued for 2022 with an expanded lineup that now includes a plug-in hybrid version. No changes are in store for the 2023 models. Dressing it up – or toughening it up, perhaps – is the rugged X-line treatment that’s designed to make the Sorento more suitable for backroad and limited off-road excursions. New for 2022, the X-Line package was expanded to Sorento EX and S trims due to the popularity of this rugged iteration, Kia said. At the top of the line for 2022 is the Sorento X-Line SX-Prestige AWD model (base price $43,190 plus freight), which includes the standard all-wheel drive, six-passenger seating instead of the standard seven-passenger layout, and an impressive turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine. In other changes for 2022, Sorento SX-P models got standard memory seats with 14-way power adjust and a new thigh extender. The SX-P trim also gets standard rear heated captain’s chairs. The 10.25-inch touch screen with navigation and telematics is now standard on all models from the S trim above. The 2.5-liter engine cranks out an impressive 281 horsepower and 311 foot-pounds of torque. It’s connected to a truly smooth-shifting eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Extras that make up the X-Line package include Torque-Vectoring All-Wheel Drive, a center-locking differential, an inch-higher ground clearance, roof rails for additional cargo and backwoods gear, “aggressive” X-Line front and rear bumpers, exclusive Matte Black lower body cladding, and unique wheels with all-season tires. Hybrids come in two types: the standard hybrid, and a plug-in version, whose battery can be recharged from an external power source. The standard hybrids start at $34,090 and range to $38,390, while the plug-in versions range from $45,190 to $48,090. EPA fuel-economy ratings for the gasoline-only models are 24 mpg city/29 highway/26 combined for front drive, and 23/25/24 for AWD versions. Regular hybrids are 39 mpg city/35 highway/37 combined. Plug-in versions are 35/33/34.

2023 KIA TELLURIDE:

2023 KIA NIRO EV:

Kia introduced the Telluride three-row midsize crossover utility vehicle three years ago, its biggest and boldest vehicle ever. Now, Telluride returns for 2023 with a long list of updates and enhancements. Big, capable, and powerful, the Telluride is designed to accommodate around-town daily needs as well as family road trips both on and off the highway. Featuring class-leading passenger room, the Telluride for 2023 includes new X-Line and X-Pro all-wheeldrive versions. These are designed to give the Telluride “a more rugged personality,” with “features and capabilities that allow the Telluride to venture off the beaten path and explore new realms of wilderness,” Kia says. Overall, there are 14 published trim levels, beginning with the base LX model ($35,690, frontwheel drive; $37,690, all-wheel drive), and topping out with the SXP X-Pro with all-wheel drive ($52,785). In between are the S ($37,590, FWD; $39,590, AWD); EX ($41,290, FWD; $43,290, AWD); SX ($45,490, FWD; $47,490, AWD); EX X-Line ($45,485, AWD); SX X-Line ($48,885, AWD); SX X-Pro ($49,885, AWD); SXP ($50,390, AWD); and SXP X-Line ($51,785, AWD). Exterior changes for 2023 include a new vertical LED headlight design; available fog lights; new bumpers and grille; revised taillights; new rear fascia and trim; revised lower door trim and side sills; new wheel designs for various trim levels; and three new exterior colors: Midnight Lake Blue, Dawning Red, and Jungle Wood Green. The Telluride has a spacious, three-row, eight-passenger seating arrangement designed to accommodate the whole family. Interior updates include curved, seamless, dual 12.3-inch display screens, gauge cluster (available) and navigation; redesigned dashboard with revised trim panels and heating/air conditioning vents; redesigned steering wheel; and new interior colors schemes. The X-Pro model builds off the X-Line model. The X-Line model replaces last year’s Telluride Nightfall Edition. The Active On-Demand All Wheel Drive monitors road conditions and distributes power to the wheels that need it. Snow Mode or AWD Lock can be manually activated to provide optimal traction.

The Niro EV (electric vehicle) small SUV is all new for 2023, as it enters its second generation, and now has an expanded battery range of up to 253 miles between charges. It comes in two trim levels, starting with the Wind model, with a base price of $39,450, followed by the Wave, which begins at $44,450. Although it remains a subcompact, the new Niro has grown from the previous version, and now has an overall length of 174 inches and a wheelbase of 107.1 inches. Cargo capacity behind the rear seat has increased to 22.8 cubic feet. Kia says the Niro has eight more cubic feet of passenger room and 50 percent more cargo space than the Tesla Model 3. There is 6.3 inches of ground clearance. The Niro EV is powered by a 201-horsepower electric motor, which drives the front wheels. It comes with a 64-8 kWh battery pack, which gives it the longer range. Kia says the battery can be recharged from the 10 percent level up to 80 percent of full charge in about 45 minutes, using a Level 3 fast charger. The 11kW onboard charger can recharge the Niro EV in under seven hours, using a Level 2 charger. An optional heat pump and battery warmer help preserve driving range in cold weather. Kia says the Niro’s new “bold” exterior design was “inspired by the ‘Opposites United’ philosophy that infuses inspiration from nature with aerodynamic refinement.” It includes upswept daytime running lights along the sides of the new signature “tiger nose” grille, “which has evolved with the new Kia brand identity.” The rear end features boomerang-shaped LED taillights. The Niro EV is part of a three-vehicle combination for the Niro brand, which also includes a hybrid model and a plug-in hybrid version. The Niro EV is distinguished from the hybrid versions by Steel Gray or black exterior trim, depending on the body color. Inside, the Niro features premium materials and textured surfaces. Its design “borrows cues from the all-electric [Kia] EV6 for a tech-focused environment in all configurations and trims,” Kia says. The interior of the Niro EV makes use of animal-free textiles, from the seating surfaces to other elements throughout the cabin, and the headliner is made of recycled wallpaper.

20232021 AUTO AUTO PREVIEW 2023 LEXUS NX: The Lexus NX compact luxury crossovers were extensively redesigned for 2022, and the first plug-in hybrid version – the NX 450h+ -- was added to the lineup. Lexus says the NX has been redesigned from the inside out, and that “Every exterior surface has been reimagined. The signature spindle grille has been refined in the front.” For the second generation, there are two electrified options, including a 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain on the NX 350h, as well as the first plug-in hybrid electric Lexus model, the NX 450h+. Advanced technology abounds in the all-new NX, Lexus says. The NX 450h+ has an estimated 36-mile range on electric power only, made possible by the newly developed, high-capacity lithium-ion battery. Using the maximum charging current of 240 volts, the Lexus NX plug-in hybrid can be fully charged in about two-and-a-half hours when equipped with the optional 6.6 kW Expedited Onboard Charger. With the standard 3.3 kW on board charger, charge time goes up to approximately four-and-a-half hours. The gasoline-only NX 350 comes with a 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder engine with 275 horsepower and 317 foot-pounds of torque, connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. There is also the NX 250, with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with start/stop functionality mated with an eight-speed transmission. It has 203 horsepower and 184 foot-pounds of torque. The NX 350h uses the regular Lexus Hybrid Drive system, with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with two high-torque electric drive motor-generators for strong acceleration and passing performance. Instead of transfer gears and a driveshaft to the rear wheels, the AWD system employs a second, independent electric motor to drive the rear wheels when it detects a need for more traction.

crossover, called the UX, recently was added to the Lexus lineup to allow the brand to take advantage of the growing luxury subcompact SUV segment. Originally available in gasoline-only and gasolineelectric hybrid versions, for 2023 the UX goes entirely hybrid. Enhancements include the addition of the Lexus Interface, a larger touch screen and Lexus Safety System+ 2.5. Other improvements for 2023 include a more-refined driving experience brought by updates to steering response, handling stability and ride quality. Structural rigidity was improved by adding 20 spot-welding points on the body, and the electronic power steering and shock absorbers were re-calibrated accordingly. Improved noise and vibration reduction were achieved with the addition of newly developed Bridgestone 18-inch run-flat tires on the new UX models. Also for 2023, the UX 250h F Sport model’s driving appearance and sportiness have been further enhanced through F Sport Design and Handling packages. The UX is low and sleek with a coupe-like appearance. It’s built on the same basic architecture as the Toyota CH-R, with a common wheelbase length – 103.9 inches. The UX is a bit longer overall, however – 177 inches versus the C-HR’s 172.6. The UX 200 comes with a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine, producing 169 horsepower and 151 footpounds of torque. The front-wheel-drive UX 200 has a 10-speed direct-shift continuously variable automatic transmission. With the UX 250h, there a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels, plus an electric motor that drives the rear wheels, making the vehicle all-wheel drive. The system has a combined 181 horsepower (gasoline engine and electric motor). Fuel-economy ratings for the hybrid system are 41 mpg city/38 highway/39 combined.

2023 LINCOLN NAVIGATOR: New

Lincoln Aviator is a rear- or all-wheel-drive midsize, three-row, luxury crossover, which arrived three years ago, including regular gasoline-only and plug-in hybrid versions. Lincoln previously used the Aviator name on a luxury version of the Ford Explorer in the early 2000s, and now has revived it for the new model, which is similarly based on the architecture of the current Explorer. There are four versions – two of them gasoline-only, with either rear-wheel drive (standard) or the optional all-wheel drive: the Standard and Reserve; and two with the plug-in hybrid system: the Grand Touring and Black Label Grand Touring, both with all-wheel drive. Gasoline-only models come with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine connected to a 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is extra. The engine is rated for 400 horsepower and 415 foot-pounds of torque. The hybrid models have the same 3.0liter engine combined with electric drive for a total of 494 horsepower and 630 foot-pounds of torque. This system combines a 10-speed SelectShift automatic with a modular hybrid transmission. Hybrid models have impressive EPA ratings of 54 city/58 highway mpg-equivalent, with a range of about 21 miles on battery power only. Fast charging at 240 volts with the plug-in system takes 2-3 hours. Regular gasoline models have EPA ratings of 18 mpg city/26 highway/21 combined with front drive, and 17/24/20 with all-wheel drive. The Aviator has a long list of standard features and luxury amenities, with more added at each succeeding trim level. Nautilus features a new signature Lincoln grille, a choice of turbocharged gasoline engines, and a variety of new driver-assist and safety technologies, including one that’s becoming popular this year throughout the auto industry – a lane-centering feature. Engine choices for the Nautilus include the standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 245 horsepower and 270 foot-pounds of torque, and the optional 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 with 335 horsepower and 380 foot-pounds of torque. Either engine comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission with a pushbutton gearshift. Other changes include interior and exterior updates, and upgrades to the MKX’s already outstanding ride comfort and road handling. Prices range from about $42,000 to $65,000.

2023 LEXUS UX 250H: A new small

for 2023 are the Navigator L models, which have been extended 12 inches to provide even more passenger and cargo space. With three rows of seating and lots of cargo capacity, Navigator is Lincoln’s most-versatile vehicle, and also its most-powerful. Prices for the regular-length models begin at $77,635 for the Standard trim, and run as high as $106,075 for the Black Label edition. In between is the Reserve for $89,825. Two versions of the L model are offered: the Reserve L ($92,855) and the Black Label L ($109,120). Navigator’s twin-turbo V-6 engine produces up to 440 horsepower and 510 foot-pounds of torque. It’s connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is available. And with the debut of the newest Navigator, Lincoln raised the bar again in the full-size luxury SUV class with the introduction of more technologies. Navigator is the first Lincoln vehicle to offer ActiveGlide, which the company says is “an evolution of Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go, Lane Centering and Speed Sign Recognition.” Also updated, the Navigator’s SYNC 4 system, enabled by cloud connectivity, is now more intuitive than ever, with twice the computing power and the ability to wirelessly connect smartphones for seamless integration of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and SYNC AppLink apps, Lincoln says. Among its standard features are the Lincoln-exclusive “Phone as a Key” technology, which first arrived on the new Aviator. Activated through the Lincoln Way app, the technology allows owners to lock and unlock, open the liftgate and, most importantly, start and drive their Navigator – all without a traditional key fob, the automaker says. Power running boards are standard, as are heated and ventilated front-row seats and a wireless charging pad for compatible mobile phones. Navigator also includes Lincoln’s Co-Pilot360, a suite of driver-assist technologies that include Auto High-Beam Headlights, Blind Spot Detection with Cross-Traffic Alert and trailer coverage, Lane-Keeping System with Driver Alert, Lane-Keeping Alert, Lane-Keeping Assist, Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Dynamic Brake Support, Forward Collision Warning with Pedestrian Detection, and a rearview camera with washer.

2021 AUTO PREVIEW 2023

Guardians of the Children Guardians of the Children, San Antonio is just one chapter of more than 50 spread across the United States and Canada. The San Antonio chapter was established as the first chapter in February 2006 and has since helped over 1,000 families through the court process with consistent emotional and physical support. While biker groups have long been viewed negatively by members of the public, GOC members turn into soft teddy bears when it comes to working with kids. The chapter takes a multi-faceted approach to helping children who have faced abuse by providing them a contact member in the chapter as their liaison and ‘biker friend,’ involving the children in group activities so they are not alone, and supporting them in various endeavors as they grow up from school activities to birthday parties and many things in between. The chapter has a niche of working with children who have faced abuse at the hands of an adult, and for good reason. “Children who hurt other children had to learn that behavior from an adult,” said Tex, the San Antonio Chapter President. “To stand up against a child perpetrator in court while supporting another child who has faced the abuse is the same as alienating one victim and supporting another.” The child’s first introduction to the chapter is through an “adoption,”

The Ferrari Kid

As a childhood cancer survivor, I have dedicated my life’s work to help kids and their families that are suffering from illness. The Ferrari Kid is a nonprofit organization that gives sick kids the ride of a lifetime. We make kids coping with cancer and dealing with illness a celebrity for the day. The Ferrari Kid promotes the overall well-being of the child by allowing them to become a celebrity for the day, forgetting, if even for one day, their unfortunate reality. They will not be receiving treatments, IV’s or pain today....for today they become a star! From the moment they get picked up in a Ferrari the excitement begins. They are taken to their celebrity “hot spot” complete with VIP ropes, red carpet, backdrop, paparazzi snapping pictures, and fans requesting an autograph of the star. The Ferrari Kid will spend the day having lunch, shopping, attending a sporting event, or having the time of their life at various locations. Once they return home, a photo book capturing the complete experience arrives in the mail creating a memory that lasts forever. The Shopping Spree is just one of our 10 signature events. The Need is GREAT: With over 100 kids on the waiting list, the need is great to give these deserving kids a day they will never forget. We take care of kids with cancer, autism, special needs, epilepsy, blindness, and so much more. Additionally, we have a monthly support group we call “The Hope Tank”, that allows us to stay with them during their entire journey. This is why we do over 20 events a year for the families. It’s like a monthly family reunion. This is critical for their mental well-being.

COME SEE US AT THE AUTO SHOW similar to an induction ceremony. The ceremony takes place wherever the family chooses, and they turn a child into a biker by giving them their own road name, a vest, a specific Teddy Bear that has the logo of the organization on it, and a variety of tools to help with the children’s anxieties and fears during the difficult time of court and beyond. No child should live as a victim, and the group has a motto that sums up their process of working with kids: Going from victim to victor. “No child should live thinking they are defined by their past,” said Tex. “We want them to know they can determine their future.” While this sounds like a cliché, the group practices what they preach, as most of the members faced child abuse themselves and have found purpose in the chapter’s mission. The chapter also spends time educating the public on recognizing and reacting to child abuse. All members carry literature on them of some kind telling whoever they encounter what they can do if they see or suspect child abuse. One of the more common handouts is a business card with the words, “See Something? Do Something!” on the front, and eight steps to take if you suspect child abuse. “The biggest lie is that no one person can make a difference for everyone, but the reality is everyone can make a difference for one person,” said Tex. The Guardians of the Children will be at the San Antonio Auto Show on Saturday and Sunday.

2021 AUTO PREVIEW 2023

Subaru Loves Pets

AUTO SHOW Subaru of America is proud to partner with local pet organizations to host pet adoption events during the San Antonio auto show in 2022. Together, our goal is to find loving homes for the many shelter and rescue animals in the local community. With COVID shutting down so many auto shows over the last few years, there have been fewer opportunities to host adoption events. We are grateful for the partnership of the San Antonio Dealers Association auto show, to help us find homes for these furry friends. To date, in the 2021-2022 auto show season, more than 200 pets have been adopted and Subaru and its retailers have donated more than $164,000 to help aid pet organizations in local communities. According to ASPCA®, approximately 6.3 million dogs and cats enter shelters each year. Our hope is that these adoption events can raise awareness for the animals in need and ideally, unite a companion pet with a loving owner. We encourage all auto show attendees to visit our exhibit and consider adopting a pet. Those not looking to adopt today are invited to donate to help pets in the community. All donations and proceeds to our exhibit will go directly to help the animals in our partner shelters. SUBARU LOVES PETS This adoption event is a part of the Subaru Loves Pets initiative, which is dedicated to improving the safety and well-being of animals in communities nationwide and to ultimately get animals out of shelters and into loving homes. Since the Subaru Loves Pets auto show adoption events began in 2018, more than 700 pets have been adopted. Subaru is committed to improving the lives of pets, including those with special needs: specifically senior dogs, amputees, visually and hearing-impaired dogs and dogs with congenital disabilities and physical challenges To date, Subaru has supported the rescue and adoption of nearly 350,000 animals nationwide. For more information on Subaru Loves Pets, please visit www.subaru. com/pets. ASPCA As the largest corporate sponsor of the ASPCA, Subaru has donated over $33 million to the organization. The Sienna also comes with a continuously variable automatic transmission This is not a plug-in hybrid, however, so, Toyota says, “There is no need to ever recharge the hybrid battery pack, and certainly no need to spend a couple of thousand dollars installing a battery charger in a garage. The Toyota Hybrid System II charges the hybrid battery automatically as the vehicle drives.” Other trim levels are: base LE, front-drive, eight-passenger; LE AWD, eight-passenger; XLE FWD, seven- or eight-passenger; XLE AWD, seven-passenger; new-for-2022 XLE Woodland Edition AWD seven-passenger; XSE FWD, seven-passenger; XSE AWD, seven-passenger; Limited FWD, sevenpassenger; and Limited AWD, seven-passenger. 2023 TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME: Toyota continues to

2023 WAGONEER/ GRAND WAGONEER/ WAGONEER L/ GRAND WAGONEER L: First there were two versions

pioneer the use of hybrid drive systems in its vehicles, one of the latest of which comes in the RAV4 Prime, introduced two years ago, giving the popular SUV its first plug-in hybrid model. With the ability to run up to 42 miles between charges on battery power alone, the RAV4 Prime represents a major upgrade from the regular RAV4 Hybrid, which also stays in the lineup. For 2023, Two versions of the RAV4 Prime offered, the base SE ($40,300) and the XSE ($43,625). The RAV4 Prime is based on the fifth generation of the compact crossover, and Toyota says it’s “the most-powerful and quickest RAV4 ever.” That’s because its hybrid drive system, comprising a gasoline engine and two electric motors, produces a combined 302 horsepower, which can push the Prime from zero to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, according to Toyota’s specifications. It’s also the quickest four-door model of any kind in Toyota’s lineup, the automaker says. In comparison, the regular RAV4 hybrid offers a maximum of 219 combined horsepower. The regular RAV4 hybrid has plenty of power for its weight, but there’s a noticeable improvement with the Prime model’s drive system. It’s great for quick starts, because most of its torque is available from startup, thanks to the two electric motors, which provide 199 foot-pounds of torque on their own. EPA ratings show a combined city/highway rating of 94 mpg-equivalent when running on an equal basis of gasoline and electric power, or 38 mpg combined when running on gasoline alone. A big difference between the regular RAV4 hybrid and the RAV4 Prime is the battery pack. The Prime comes with a lithium-ion battery, but the regular hybrid has a lower-capacity nickel-metal-hydride battery. RAV4 Prime has a modified version of the RAV4 Hybrid’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine, with the same 177 horsepower and 165 foot-pounds of torque as the regular hybrid’s engine. Both the Prime and regular RAV4 hybrids have a second electric motor at the rear axle to give them four-wheel drive. The normal configuration is front-wheel drive.

of this seven- or eight-passenger SUV: the Wagoneer, starting around $58,000 for the Series I entry-level model with rearwheel drive; and $87,000 for the Grand Wagoneer Series I with four-wheel drive. Now, for 2023, the lineup expands with the new long-wheelbase Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L models, which add 12 inches in overall length (226.7 inches) and 7 inches of wheelbase (130.0 inches) to deliver best-inclass overall passenger volume and cargo volume behind the third row. These SUVs are derived from the architecture of the Ram pickups. Also for 2023, the Wagoneer L Carbide model arrives, featuring Gloss Black wheels, Black Onyx grille rings with Gloss Black grille texture, Gloss Black mirror and headlamp appliques, technical hydrographic instrument panel trim, and doors with Global Black seats The new Hurricane twin-turbo engines, including the Hurricane twin-turbo 510, offer premium performance with up to 15% improvement in fuel economy. Off-road capability comes from three fourwheel-drive systems: Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II with active low range and rear electronic limited-slip differential. For 2023, the Wagoneer Series II and Wagoneer Series III get the new Hurricane Twin Turbo inline six-cylinder engine, producing 420 horsepower and 468 foot-pounds of torque. 20232021 AUTO AUTO PREVIEW 2023 CHEVROLET BOLT EV: Chevrolet resigned

2023 CHEVROLET BOLT EUV: For 2023, the

its groundbreaking all-electric Bolt EV just last year. Its advanced 65 kilowatt-hour, lithium-ion battery pack helps the Bolt EV offer up to an EPA-estimated 259 miles of range on a full battery charge. For 2023, the starting price for the Bolt EV is $32,495, including freight. Since its introduction in 2017, the Bolt EV hatchback’s global sales have topped 100,000, and it has generated some of the best satisfaction and loyalty ratings in the industry, General Motors says. It has a changeable plug that allows the customer to plug into a standard 120volt three-prong outlet for Level 1 charging and a 240-volt outlet for Level 2 charging up to 7.2 kilowatts. For maximum Level 2 charging speed, the Bolt EV and its bigger sibling, the Bolt EUV, are now capable of 11 kW Level 2 charging, but separate charging equipment (not included) is required. Chevrolet also will pay for standard installation of Level 2 charging capability for eligible customers who purchase or lease a Bolt of either model. Bolt customers also have access to more than 80,000 chargers in North America through the Energy feature within their myChevrolet App. It enables owners to plan and manage their routes more efficiently, locate available charging stations along their routes, receive real-time alerts about range, and easily pay for public charging through the click-to-charge feature. For the Bolt EV, the 2022 design updates include a new, more upright front fascia and new front and rear lighting signatures — including the signature high-eye daytime running lights in front. Inside, the vehicle features a new instrument panel, vehicle controls and seats, with a 10.2-inch-diagonal infotainment color touch screen and integrated climate controls. The infotainment screen features real-time displays with more details available on the eight-inch-diagonal reconfigurable color gauge cluster. For increased regenerative braking, there’s even a new one-pedal driving button that keeps the system active between drive cycles. Chevy Safety Assist is standard on the Bolt EV, and includes safety and advanced driver-assistance technologies, such as Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indicator, IntelliBeam and Front Pedestrian Braking.

Bolt EUV starts at $34,495, including freight. While the Bolt EV has a hatchback car design, the Bolt EUV – Electric Utility Vehicle – takes on the proportions of a small crossover utility vehicle, but with only electric drive available. General Motors says the new Bolt EUV carries the same “proven technology that helped make the Bolt EV the industry’s first affordable, long-range electric vehicle.” Both models are part of GM’s plan to launch 30 new electric vehicles globally by 2025. While widening Chevrolet’s electric-vehicle lineup, the Bolt EUV also became the first Chevrolet vehicle to offer Super Cruise, the industry’s first true hands-free driver assistance system for enabled roads. The new model also helps make EV charging more convenient, thanks to its new Dual Level Charge Cord, which for many customers will eliminate the need to purchase a separate charger for their home, Chevy says. It has a changeable plug that allows the customer to plug into a standard 120-volt three-prong outlet for Level 1 charging or a 240-volt outlet for Level 2 charging up to 7.2 kilowatts. The Dual Level Charge Cord is standard on the Bolt EUV and is an option on the smaller Bolt EV. For maximum Level 2 charging speed, both vehicles are now capable of 11 kW Level 2 charging, but separate charging equipment (not included) is required, the automaker says. Chevrolet says it will cover standard installation of Level 2 charging capability for eligible customers who purchase or lease a Bolt EUV or Bolt EV, helping even more people experience how easy it is to live electric. For away-from-home public charging, GM is providing customers with convenient and expanded access to EVgo, the nation’s largest public fast-charging network. GM and EVgo are planning to triple the number of fast chargers, adding 2,700 more across the country by the end of 2025. Chevy Safety Assist is standard, and includes safety and advanced driver assistance technologies such as Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indicator, IntelliBeam and Front Pedestrian Braking.

2023 FORD F-150 LIGHTNING: Ford’s F-150

2022, the Ford E-Transit was the first of two all-electric vehicles purposely built for Ford Pro commercial customers. Ford says the E-Transit is the only all-electric cargo van from a full-line automaker available in eight different configurations, including three roof heights and three body lengths. There also are cutaway and chassis-cab versions to fulfill multiple applications. E-Transit can be further customized with the addition of special bodies (on chassis cab and cutaway) and equipment, such as ladder racks and interior bulkhead and storage solutions. E-Transit offers the same interior cargo dimensions and most of the same mounting points as the regular Ford Transit vans. It can be ordered with a range of work-ready accessories such as bulkheads and shelving directly from the factory, so the van is ready to work upon delivery. Additional features include the optional Pro Power Onboard, which provides up to 2.4 kilowatts of power for customers to transform the vehicle into a mobile generator that charges and powers tools and equipment on job sites and on the go. Because commercial drivers spend long hours in their vans, Ford designed a highly functional interior for E-Transit with accommodating head room, legroom and interior walk-through room, with the center console and an integrated rotary shifter. On the road with navigation enabled, Ford days, drivers can benefit from the Ford Co-Pilot360 technology, such as available Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Speed Sign Recognition and Intelligent Speed Assist, which together identify speed limits and automatically change the vehicle speed accordingly. E-Transit also includes Co-Pilot360 technologies such as Lane-Keeping System and Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking. Available are Blind Spot Assist, a 360-degree camera with Split View, and Reverse Brake Assist. With a usable battery capacity of 68 kilowatt-hours, E-Transit has a targeted range of 126 miles in the lowroof cargo van configuration. E-Transit cutaway models have a starting price of $43,295, and come with an eight-year, 100,000-mile electric-vehicle component warranty.
