Wotton Rovers FC Stroud & District Football League 2021 – 2022 Wotton Rovers v Avonvale United Saturday 11 December 2021

£1

Welcome to Synwell Today we welcome Avonvale United, whose senior team has only be running for 16 years but in that time, they have risen rapidly through the Football Pyramid and at their peak were competing in the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division 1 just 5 seasons ago. Avonvale United was founded in 1998 by Martin Blackah, with two youth teams for his sons and their friends to play matches against local teams. His enthusiasm was infectious and he was soon joined by other willing helpers and from this small start, Avonvale United grew. From its early beginnings at Trouble House and a spell at Sir William Romney’s School, Avonvale United now call the Shipton Moyne Recreation Ground their home, where its youth section trains each Saturday morning and play their competitive games in the Cotswold Youth League. The Avonvale United youth section now caters for around 100 children from 4 years to 16 years. As Martin’s sons grew older, a senior section was formed in 2005 entering a squad into the Cirencester & District League Division 2. Gaining promotion in their first season to Division 1 and with more players joining the Club each season, a Reserve team entered Division 2 in 2006, followed by a Third team entering Stroud & District Division 8 in 2007. In 2011 the First & Reserve teams entered the Stroud & District League (Divisions 3 & 5) with the first team gaining promotion to Division 2 at the end of their first season in the league. The men’s team also enjoys the facilities at Shipton Moyne Recreation Ground, playing all of their home fixtures there and trains on a Wednesday evening at Inside Football in Brimscombe. Roger Smart - RIP 21/08/61 - 08/12/21 Today we are paying our respects to Roger Smart, a true Wotton Rovers Legend, who passed away on Wednesday this week after a short battle with cancer in the company of those he loved. As Chelsea, his beloved daughter said, “You never once complained or stopped fighting until the very end, I could not have been prouder to call you, my Dad.” Rog was a great character and was very popular in the town. He was a long-term member and supporter of Wotton Rovers, having been a manager and excellent linesman over the years. He always supported the Club and would make a point of getting his lottery tickets on a Saturday morning when he passed the White Lion Archway. As well as Wotton Rovers, he also supported Bristol Rovers and of course, the Mighty Liverpool! We will miss you Smarty and we hope everyone today will join us in a minute’s applause at the start of the game today to honour his memory.

You may have moved on but you certainly had a great 60 years on this planet!

You will Never Walk Alone Roger

We’re backing Play Safe Wotton Rovers is lending its full support to Play Safe – a national FA-led campaign to raise awareness of the importance of safeguarding in football. Play Safe is being run in partnership with the NSPCC and has the full backing of the Premier League, EFL, Barclays FA Women’s Super League and the FA Women’s Championship. It’s also supported and being run across every other level of the game. The main element of Play Safe is a series of short films which emphasise the importance of clubs such as ours having safeguarding as an everyday reality. The films also explain to parents/carers and children themselves know what to do if they feel unsafe or worried, because nothing matters more than making sure football is safe for everyone, especially children and young people. You can see these films on our website at: https://wrfc.org.uk/ “As a youth team coach, I will be working with my club to ensure we support the Play Safe messaging,” says FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham. “I am also pleased that the campaign has the support of the former footballers with lived experience of abuse in football, who are on our Survivor Support and Safeguarding Advisory Group. The Group has collectively said: “Learning from the past is crucial, so that we can prevent the horrific experiences that happened to us and so many others in football, from happening again. “As a group of survivors, we fully support the ethos and important messages that Play Safe conveys – whether to club officials, parents/carers and or vitally, children and young people themselves. Equally important is that Play Safe is not a one-off campaign – it will be used at key points in the football calendar to remind everyone in football, that children’s welfare and keeping them safe, should be at the heart of all that we do.”

As the Survivor Group points out, you’ll see Play Safe appearing at various points throughout the season to keep safeguarding front of mind in football. Together, we want to do everything we can so everyone – particularly children and young people – has a consistently positive experience of our great game.

Boxing Day 26th Dec and New Year Bank Holiday – Mon 3rd Jan Don’t mention the ‘C’ word, but it’s just around the corner. Today’s match is the last First Team home game before the Yule Tide. If you haven’t already seen it elsewhere in the programme but the Seconds are at home to Painswick Reserves, which will be the last game before Christmas. Also, please don’t forget the Regular Boxing Day Friendly game arranged by Marc Jenkins – Married v Singles kick off 11:00 am. New Years Day falls on a Saturday so the Stroud League have arranged fixtures for Monday 3 January but both teams are away – so the next home game will not be until Saturday 8 January when the First Team welcome Horsley United. Although we are all sad at the recent passing of Smarty, I’m sure that he would have wanted you all to have a Very Merry Christmas.
