46E – Notes (Reaction of metals with acids)

PLEASE NOTE: ALL THE ABOVE ACIDS ARE DILUTE ACIDS. For example: 1. magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce magnesium chloride: magnesium

+

hydrochloric acid

magnesium chloride +

hydrogen

2. sodium reacts with sulphuric acid to produce sodium sulphate Sodium

+

sulphuric acid

sodium sulphate

+

hydrogen

3. Lithium reacts with Nitric acid to produce lithium nitrate Lithium +

nitric acid

lithium nitrate

+

hydrogen

When you write the name of the compound, the name of the reacting metal will always be first followed by the acid – NOT nitric, sulphuric, and hydrochloric BUT, nitrate, sulphate or chloride It doesn't matter which metal or which acid is used, if there is a reaction we always get hydrogen gas as one of the products. Write down the word equation for when: 1. Zinc reacts with sulphuric acid 2. Potassium reacts with hydrochloric acid 3. Magnesium reacts with nitric acid
