NORTHWICH RUGBY CLUB
“the Rugby Matters”
Saturday 7th December 2019
WELCOME Greetings fellow “Blacks” supporters, this week’s 1st XV objective is to back-up their last fixture’s 5 pointer, a bonus point win over Broughton Park, with another as league action returns for the first team with a trip overseas and a visit to the Isle of Man. The top two may have pulled away a little in the North One West, but Northwich are in the chasing pack. Back-to-back wins means they sit fourth, six points behind Birkenhead Park in second and at the head of a tightly-bunched group of seven teams separated by only seven points. They make the trip to the Isle of Man to face one of them, fifth place Douglas after their two-week break For those unable to travel our seconds are at home to Liverpool Collegiate 2nd, after last week’s performance skipper Antony Keller said “It has been an absolute privilege to wear the jersey and lead this squad. I’ve asked for consistency and sacrifice, to turn our season around. Each and every person should be proud of themselves for that performance. We don’t take our foot off the pedal; we go again. The thirds host Prenton 1st, both games kick-off 2.15pm at Moss Farm.

Mid-week rugby on TV John Paul ‘JP’ Doyle will become the latest international referee to take charge of the Varsity Match when he controls the 138thclash between Oxford and Cambridge at Twickenham Stadium on Thursday, 12 December.
7th December. Did you know? On this day. 1982 A row at the Varsity match where the entirely amateur teams were ordered to blacken out any logos on their boots by the RFU. In a PR blunder, the RFU sent a snooty note to both teams and to drive home the point generously included a black pen in the letter to help them do this. 1948 Oxford included four South African students in the side that won the Varsity Match 14-8, prompting Cambridge students in the crowd to say "we were beaten by Springboxford". 1976 The first sponsored Varsity match - Bowring's in case you ask and no, we can't remember what they did either - ended in a 15-0 win for Cambridge, who became the first side to win five successive matches in the series. Cambridge coach Ian Robertson was forthright post-match when he described Oxford as "pathetic". 1965 One of the most dismal Varsity matches ended in a 5-5 draw with the Daily Express' Pat Marshall clearly upset at a day of his life wasted, along with 60,000 other "sad souls who pleaded for just one spark of offensive action during the last, dismal 15 minutes while the light and dark blues wound up this 84th meeting like nervous bunnies … to think 30 university men wasted eight weeks' academic time to produce a shocker like this".
SENIOR RUGBY Northwich 1st match preview vs Douglas Northwich visit Douglas Rugby Club the oldest Rugby Club on the Isle of Man. It was founded in 1873 and apart from being the oldest and highest ranked, the club has several other firsts for the Isle of Man. It was the first Manx side to join the national leagues, it was the first club in the Isle of Man to start mini rugby, it was the first club to build its own club house. The clubhouse and grounds have been in various areas on the Island and in 1952 the Club were able to gain occupation on the current premises. Douglas have only lost three home games in the previous two seasons in their IOM stronghold. And so far in this only Waterloo have won at Port E Chee. Douglas took a step closer to the top of North One West with a 22-17 defeat of second place Birkenhead Park at Port-e-Chee in their last home fixture. They led 14-11 at half time with a try and three penalties. In the second half, powerful wing Adam Boyd crossed for Douglas’ second try and added two more penalties. A defeat for Penrith meant Douglas moved into third place in the standings with the gap to the second down to just four points. In their last match prior to the rest week, Douglas dropped to fourth place in North One West after a 57-27 defeat away at Burnage. The four try performance however gave Douglas a useful bonus point. A Burnage win last week means they drop to fifth place. Coffin Dodger Banter: A recent conversation was observed from the intellectively challenged in CD corner last weekend when reminiscing about playing days. On the pitch “???” didn’t know the meaning of fear. And in quick reply ‘’Mind you, there are a million other words he doesn’t know the meaning of, either.’’ Anyone care to guess who “???” could have been ………
Northwich 2nd & 3rd opposition Northwich 2s v Didsbury Toc H match review Northwich got back on track last week with a win away to promotion chasing Didsbury Toc H & credit to our boys who achieved this. In the closely contested fixture, you could get critical & say we got a bit drawn into 'am stronger than you' type of play running directly into contact when we normally try to tip the ball on & attack a bit wider from the rucks as only a couple of half breaks came from the first time pass direct approach, on a soft pitch it really was energy sapping for the forwards who put in a double work shift & some more. This game proved that they can also defend with no clear line breaks coming through or around our defensive line. Players will often remember the big away wins as their favourite games & time will tell if this one is added to the list. Final score 14-31. It was a phenomenal performance by Northwich who have had a bad start to the season, however under the guidance of the latest team manager Chris Bradshaw, the team seem to be growing in both confidence and ability. Hopefully this can continue for the young side. Martin Poste was in attendance and said he was extremely delighted by the game and loved to see the lads perform in such a tough contest and come out on top. .
Northwich 2 welcomes Liverpool Collegiate 2 to Moss Farm. Liverpool Collegiate in 7th come to Northwich on the back of 40-28 home win over Anselmians. Although there are 6 league positions between the teams they are evenly matched Northwich winning two home games, Collegiate two away, both losing to Holmes Chapel and both teams beating Toc H.
Northwich 3 host Prenton 1st. Without a fixture last week due to weather related match postponed, Northwich face difficult opponents Prenton, who are top compared to Northwich at rock bottom. Last week Prenton crushed second from bottom Oswestry 97-0. With over a 3rd of our leagues games now played it is shaping up into a 3 way battle between Prenton, Oldershaw & Eagle at the top, with Northwich now firmly in a relegation fight.
