Security Update Security has always been a consideration at Adat Chaverim. As we move into the Jewish year 5780, we find ourselves as Jews and human beings in a conflicted world where we must be extra vigilant even as our hope would be for a tolerant, unified world. Here is a summary of the steps we have taken to assure that our congregation is as safe as we can make it. • ID badges for all congregants and visitors. • Reviews with Plano police representatives that our premises are secure,

modification/suggestions implemented including peepholes in doors. Single entry (front doors) to the building, doors are always locked, except when police officer is present, • Police officer on duty for Friday night services, B'nai Mitzvah Saturdays, High Holy

Days services, other large religiously connected services (for example: Simchat Torah, Purim, Passover seder), all Religious School days. • Distribution of portable "panic buttons" to (Rabbi, Educ Dir, office manager) • Procedure in place for opening front door while "magnet" is on. • Consultation/evaluation with Jewish Federation of Dallas security expert, on-going

education for staff through mail and webcasts from ADL and Homeland Security. • Procedure for use of walkie-talkies in communication between front door officer

and sanctuary and/or second floor classrooms. • Planned annual security presentation by a professional (Plano police, ADL, Jewish

Federation, or Homeland Security) to update congregation on potential new approaches. • Investigation of governmental and private grants available

for cutting edge security for our new building. • Our building has indoor and outdoor security cameras and

an alarm system, including police contact through ADT. where Reform Judaism thrives 6300-A Independence Parkway Plano, TX 75023 (972) 491-5917

While congregational funds are obviously used for many of these items, our thanks go to all the volunteers and staff that have put these things in place so that we can all worship and learn in a safe environment. 

Rabbi’s corner Clothes? Check. Toiletries? Check. Medicines? Check. Spare glasses? Check. Passport? Check. There’s so much to remember when traveling overseas, I always try to have a checklist to be prepared. I know it’s just a study trip to Israel, not a solo trek through the Amazonian Rainforest. I know that if I should forget anything, I can always get it there. I actually lived in Jerusalem for my first year of Rabbinic School, so I know how to live there. But it’s easier to know that I already have everything that I will need. Thus, the checklist. This year, the month of Elul corresponds almost precisely with the month of September, differing only in the fact that Elul has 29 days as compared to September’s 30 days, which means that Rosh Hashanah begins on September 30th, the first day of the month of Tishrei. I mention Elul because Elul is a month of checklists as we prepare for the High Holy Days. Now, I have a more extensive checklist heading into the High Holy Days than most of you do. Make sure my robe is clean? Check. Go over cues with Cantorial Soloist Randy Pearlman? Check. Assign Yom Kippur readings and go over honors? Check. Write sermons? That will be checked off, eventually… Thank God that Terry Sigle, Dotty Fox, Marty Fox, Valerie Klein, Brotherhood, Women of Adat Chaverim, House Committee, Social Action Committee, all the volunteers who make our High Holy Days so beautiful and meaningful are taking care of a myriad of details? Check, check, and daily check. But Elul also acts as the checklist for our souls and it’s a checklist for each and every one of us. Have I thought about my life and the direction that it’s taking? Have I paid attention to my loved ones and kept up my personal relationships? Have I been active in the community and seen to its needs? Have I thought about where I’ve fallen short and how to get better? Am I ready to stand before God during these upcoming High Holy Days? What a daunting checklist for us to tick off!

Enjoy a Tot-approved Shabbat Service, followed by a fun craft and a snack.

Meet and Connect with other families and kids aged Pre-K to 2 nd grade.

From the Editor The peace of wild things by Wendell Berry When despair grows in me and I wake in the middle of the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting for their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

We have the entire month of Elul to prepare, but to paraphrase Rabbi Tarfon from Pirkei Avot [2:15]: The days are few, the checklists are long, and we can be resistant even though the reward is great. But he also used to say: it is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it. [2:16] We must do our best to check off as much as we can during Elul, the checklist of our souls, even if we never finish. Because, really, we can never truly finish making ourselves better human beings.

L’Shalom, Rabbi Ben

Message from the President... I hope that everyone has enjoyed their summer going on vacations, taking a break from school and for many of our kids, time with one another at Greene Family Camp. While Rabbi Sternman was on sabbatical during the month of July, a big THANK YOU goes out to those congregants who led us during Friday night services. It was truly a treat for everyone who attended. The Building Committee, led by David Baier, has continued to meet with architects, construction companies, the City of Frisco and the bank preparing for a meeting that we plan to call in September (details available soon). It's very exciting as we get closer to a final design with costs and plans for breaking ground on our new home. As David outlined in our previous newsletter, there are many components to how we will afford the new building, including pledges, a mortgage and membership commitments. Membership has and will always be one of the most important aspects to our strong congregation. As we will share with everyone in September, future growth will be a key component towards our ability to borrow in building our new home. With High Holy Days and religious school starting, we often find that August and September are the months with the highest growth. And this is where you can help out. Make it your personal goal to bring a couple Jewish families or friends to a service, Sunday school or a program. Invite and bring them to our Religious School, Mitzvah Day and Open House on Sunday, August 25th, from 9am-12pm. As we come closer to finalizing our plans and breaking ground on our new home, we will be asking every member for their support. It has been a long road to get here, and we have a lot of hard work ahead of us. But I know that with everyone's commitment we will get there, and we will be an even stronger community of friends.

L’Shalom,

Sasha Irene Mackoff Sasha Irene Mackoff is the daughter of Julia Mark and Shawn Mackoff, along with their spouses, Jeff Mark and Caryn Mackoff. She is also a bonus sister to Ethan and Emily Mark. She has been a member of Adat since moving to Texas in 2015 and actually enjoys getting up on Sundays for Religious School. Sasha has been acting and singing since first grade through school, NTPA and the JCC as she has sung and pranced her way through everything from Hamlet to Hershel - Willy Wonka Jr. to Guys and Dolls, Jr. In her ‘not so spare’ time, she is an honors student, co-captain of the Speech Team, plays bass in Chamber Orchestra and is a member of the Dallas String Ensemble. She likes to spend time with her friends, whether its volunteering with National Junior Honor Society, Instagramming about Greene Family Camp countdown, dogs or Starbucks. Sasha loves her family whether its game day with the Greenwoods, family movie night or just dinner, she brings enthusiasm and laughter to all that she does. Sasha shows compassion and dedication to her schoolwork, friendships, family and community. She will be continuing religious school this year to become a Macharnik in her Freshman year. Our family would like to say thank you to our community of friends who have supported our entire family along this journey.

Brayden is called to the Torah on August 31st. He is the son of Jeff and Susan Schwartz and lives in Plano, Texas with his sweet dog, Mickey. Brayden is an eighth- grader at Renner Middle School in Plano. He plays the saxophone and is a member of the symphonic band and has plans to join the jazz band as well in the fall. He has been a member of Adat Chaverim since he was born and feels at home in his community of friends. Brayden has always enjoyed giving back to the community. Whether he’s helping at Brotherhood events, raising money for the American Cancer Society, cleaning up parks or calling bingo at the Frisco Senior Center, he is always happy to lend a hand. When Brayden is not showcasing his talents for music and being the life of the party, you can find him hanging with friends, playing games and enjoying life. Brayden could not be more excited to share this special weekend with family and friends who came near and far to celebrate with us.

BOOK SALE! WE NEED YOUR BOOKS! The 7th grade Judaica class, will, again, be sponsoring a Book Sale to raise money for a cause to be chosen. This year the sale will be on Sunday, Nov. 17, from 8:30am to 12:00pm. Last year's class raised over $650.00 for the American Cancer Society! Please start saving those gently used books today. We would greatly appreciate your adult and youth fiction and nonfiction books, as well as your children and toddler books. The more items that we can collect, the better our sales will be. Thank you. 2019-2020 7th grade class

Kudos to Our New Lay Service Leaders! Three of our Friday Evening services this July were led by our new Lay Service Leaders — David Baier, Rich Klein and David Guravich. These three congregants (adding Michelle Sigle) had a 6 session intensive training with Rabbi on how to lead a Friday evening service — reviewing the prayers, structuring the service and creating a d’var Torah/sermonette.

COLLEGE AHEAD? S TAY C O N N E C T E D !

These newly trained leaders got to show their new skills during the Rabbi’s sabbatical in July — and what a great job they did! For those who had the pleasure of worshipping with them these past shabbotot, we were treated to a fresh approach to the service with creative perspective. Leading services is not necessarily an easy task, but they met the challenge and provided their congregation with their personal, thoughtful style. Kudos to them! Also, a hardy todah rabbah to Steve Fisch who led the Friday Evening service on July 5th. Steve is always a willing team participant.

Our temple’s college outreach maintains a strong relationship with our temple’s young people after they graduate high school by sending packages and email greetings to our students several times throughout the year.

We are interested in continuing to build a team of congregants who are willing to lead services. This helps us when Rabbi is on vacation, his future upcoming sabbaticals or when it is otherwise necessary for him to be unavailable on a Friday evening.

These tokens are a perfect way to let our young adult members to know they always have a home at Adat Chaverim.

Please consider joining the Lay Service Leadership Team.

Send us your college student’s name, address, and email address to [email protected] to add them to our College Outreach list.

L’shalom,

WE WANT YOU TO HELP SHAPE OUR FUTURE Outreach to the unaffiliated is a mitzvah: Hachnasat Orchim. Like Abraham and Sarah, we need to welcome new people into our synagogue “tent,” so that we can show them hospitality and kindness, and create the Jewish future together. Our temple is for any lifestyle. FRIENDSHIP, SPIRITUALITY, COMMUNITY.

Whatever the need, Adat Chaverim has a place for your friends, neighbors and greater community. Adat Chaverim is more than just a congregation, we are a “Community of Friends.” We ask that you tell others about us and invite them to join.  7

Adat Chaverim is a community of friends. We care about each other. We want to actively promote a culture of help and caring with our Adat Chaverim community throughout North Texas. When you need or know of someone who needs meals, transportation or just company because of illness, injury or a death in the family, or have a need for assistance with Shiva services, please let us know! Working in concert with Rabbi Sternman, the Caring Committee is available to help our members and their families in times of need. Our new Caring Committee ADAT CARES - is co-chaired by Nancy Krangle and Donna Hermann. For assistance, please contact us by email at [email protected]. We are also reaching out to our community of friends to determine who can assist in providing these mitzvot. Whether you would like to participate as a member of the Committee, or just be available when assistance is needed to provide meals and other assistance, please let us know at [email protected]. Helping one another is one of the greatest mitzvot in Judaism. We hope to hear from you.

Women of Adat Chaverim Looming Schedule: Passing Hats looming will resume on August 25th from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the temple library (unless otherwise noted) beginning August 25, followed by September 22, October 27, November 24, December 15, January 26, February 23, March 22, and April 26. Let's get loom'n!

Well, after 15 years it is hard to believe that I am delegated to writing a newsletter article again. I thought after serving on so many committees, the Brotherhood Board, the Temple Board, and eventually Temple President, that you all should be finished hearing from me, but alas this was not the case.

5th Annual Sisterhood Teddy Bear Drive: Please donate NEW teddy bears and stuffed animals for the Children's Advocacy Center of Collin County from Aug. 1st through Sept. 10th in the temple lobby. The CAC gives each child a new stuffed animal as they arrive. Let's try to beat last year's record of over 150 stuffed animals! Thank you "beary" much from the bottom of our hearts for doing this mitzvah! ~Women of Adat Chaverim

One thing I did learn from all of my years involved with Adat Chaverim is that we could not survive without all of you who are members, and especially those who volunteer whenever or for whatever they are asked. This I found, also goes for Brotherhood, which is why I am writing a newsletter article again. First and foremost, the Brotherhood and myself would like to thank Barry Levy for his service as Brotherhood President.

ADL Walk Against Hate, Victory Plaza, Dallas - Sept. 15th 2019: “Dallas will celebrate our inaugural Walk Against Hate on September 15th, 2019 to promote diversity and celebrate the values of respect and inclusion. The event is a two-mile walk that brings together our entire community including corporations and nonprofits, students and educators, families and all others who want to stand up to hate. Features include main stage entertainment, a Corporate Village for sponsor marketing opportunities and a Diversity Expo comprised of local nonprofit organizations sharing the work they do to serve our community”. For more information, visit www.walkagainsthatedallas.org

Barry has decided to step down, but under his leadership Brotherhood has gained respect and provided a service to Adat Chaverim, and for this we all owe him a debt of gratitude. So how do we take our next steps as Men of Adat Chaverim? Do we sit idly by and allow the hard work that Barry and others have put in to make Brotherhood a vibrant organization become nothing, or do we join Brotherhood, get involved in Brotherhood, and maybe one day become a future leader of Brotherhood? I say, yes this is our goal: to ask each male member of Adat Chaverim to show up to one of our events. Whether it’s one of our breakfasts, a night of poker, helping with our Labor Day Card show, ushering at High Holy days… no matter what the event is, just come and check us out. For brotherhood to be as successful as it can be and do the most good for Adat Chaverim, we need you. Hope to see you all real soon!

As we read the sacred text from the beginning to end every year, it can seem as a fresh journey each time; and every reading offers the possibility of new meanings that can add greatly to one’s life.
