Year 8 News The Advocacy program has seen Year 8 students participate in a variety of activities. In Term 1 they have rapped it out creating songs influenced by life in Kwinana and the wider community. In Term 2 the focus for these lessons expanded further across the continent covering all things Australian, from iconic places to learning the Australian Anthem. Students had to memorise the entire anthem… even the second verse! This Term Year 8s are focusing on building relationships with their peers, identifying their ancestry, sharing stories and recipes from their culture and unique backgrounds. Students have participated in collaborative learning tasks working in groups of three practicing their interviewing, reporting and recording skills whilst learning interesting information about one another. Further activities this Term will include researching international scientists, learning songs and dances from abroad and finally cooking up an international storm. The participation of Year 8 students in extracurricular activities has also been outstanding. Students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of events such as showcase performances, community presentations, sports carnivals and a wide range of competitions. Keep up the hard work! A special congratulations to Olivia Morton for being awarded a Certificate for Outstanding Achievement in Mathletics. Olivia as well as many other students in the Follow the Dream program have been working with ‘Mathletics’ and ‘Spellodrome,’ to try and improve their literacy and numeracy skills. Well Done Olivia! The Gilmore Gladiators are triumphant! In our last newsletter, the Gilmore College Debate team had their first debate against Lynwood Senior High School. It was a hard-fought competition that saw us go down by 48 points. In our second debate against Melville Senior High School, we saw some great improvement and as it came down to the wire, we came away with a 10 point loss - an improvement of 38 points!

F Dear Parents It has been another busy Term at Gilmore with many reward activities and excursions happening including: the Year 10 and 11 River Cruise and the whole College Athletics Carnival. The College regularly receives comments from the public about our students, some good and some bad. You will be delighted to know that when they are on excursions the feedback we get is always complimentary about their behaviour and good manners. The College has improved its results in the Naplan testing for 2014. In all tests, Year 7 and 9, the results were ‘as expected’. This is very pleasing and is evidence that the strategies we have put in place to help students who are falling behind are working. We aim to further improve in 2015. The majority of our students are well behaved, wear College uniform and follow the rules. We are proud of them. Unfortunately, there is a small group of students who feel the need to challenge, even intimidate the staff and the rules. They also intimidate and bully other students. Their behaviour is not tolerated and unfortunately often ends in suspension. Gilmore College has adopted a whole school anti-bullying program called Breaking the Cycle. By the time you read this we hope we have all Year groups and all staff trained in this initiative. The biggest problem will be breaking the habits of those who see the bullies as entertainment and actively encourage them by standing by watching.

ROM THE PRINCIPAL It is almost time to say farewell to the Year 12 students who leave us in October. This group was named the half-cohort as they were students in the year enrolment in Primary Schools was cut off at the end of June, hence the number of them is small. More information will be issued regarding the Valedictory Ceremony in the oncoming weeks. Gilmore College conducts whole school assemblies in week 3 and week 8 during school Terms. It was wonderful to see so many parents attend the NAIDOC Assembly in Term 3. I encourage you to come to the assemblies and see and hear the positive things that happen at the College. We are very proud of Kaitlin Smith Year 11 and Larra Brown-Risk Year 9, both of whom were selected for the final interview stage of applying to go on the Premier’s ANZAC Tour in 2015. Their interviews are in the school holidays so we wish them well and hope they make the Tour. We will know next Term if they were successful. I would also like to thank the teachers who assisted them in preparing their written applications. Well done everyone.

We’ve just finished round three, hosted at Lynwood Senior High School, against Lakeland Senior High School. Courtney Hunter delivered an outstanding opening to the debate, showing exactly what some previous experience and lots of coaching can do. Courtney was followed by Jorgen Woods, who although nervous in his first debate, gave a good account and delivered his points whilst rebutting the opposition. Paige Hollands finished for our team, being selected as our third speaker after her stellar performance in the second debate.

Zayden Norris recently attended a World Skills Presentation at Parliament House where he officially received his “Team WA” uniform. Zayden will be representing Western Australia in the Metals and Engineering National World Skills Competition on 18, 19 and 20 September at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. We would like to wish Zayden all the very best in the National Competition. We would also like to thank Challenger Institute of Technology, Henderson and Rockingham for helping fine tuning Zayden’s welding skills and sheet metal work. Be sure to come along over the weekend to the Convention Centre and cheer him on!! Go Zayden!

You should all be very proud of your team as we came away from the debate with a three point win! Gilmore College now has some points on the board and in only their third debate against some top-rated public schools with many years of experience. The next round sees us battle wits against Rossmoyne Senior High School on their home ground, followed by John Curtin College of the Arts, also on their home ground. These will be two tough matches that will really test our skills and be a fantastic learning opportunity against the regular winners of the competition. Jeremy Meredith Debate Coach

The new Student Centred Funding has many implications for Gilmore and its operations in 2015 and beyond. The College has had funding reduced. I will keep you informed on changes that we will have to implement. Have a safe and happy third Term break. Carolyn Cook Principal

2014 Health Expo Over two days on the 1 and 2 of September students in Senior School Health Studies classes researched, planned, created and hosted an information booth on a selected health area. The focus of the booths were the National Health Priority Areas for Year 12 and Physical Activity, Nutrition and Obesity for Year 11 students. Throughout the two days students from lower school visited the booths to be entertained and learnt some important health information vital to lifelong health of all Australians. Some of the booths provided information and further service, whilst others had a focus on encouraging participation and testing of current physical activity levels.

Crowd favorites included the anti-drunk driving booths where students could test their skills on Mario Kart or wearing the car whilst wearing drunk and dangerous glasses. The booth where they were able to sample various fruits and the very popular but nerve racking sex-ed booth where students had a number of obstacle courses! Students involved worked extremely hard over a number of weeks and in particular over the two days to ensure a very successful Gilmore College Health Expo. A special thanks to teachers who assisted and the Asthma Foundation who supported us on the day with two lovely volunteers and Smarter than Smoking (Heart Foundation) who provided a great competition wheel and Dude mascot!! Year 12 News We are gearing up for the end of the year and the Year 12s can see the end in sight.

Ar tfest

The year has flown by, soon it will be Valedictory and the half Cohort will be busy thinking about what the future has install for them.

During Term 3, the Art students of Gilmore College performed the annual ARTFEST. This year the show was run entirely by the Student Production and Design crew. These students have been working all year on various events such Gilmore’s Got Talent, Miss Gilmore, Dance showcases and various other events. The Production Crew have been working on different skills such as lighting, sound, advertising and event management which were essential to running ARTFEST.

The Year 12s have waited patiently for the opening of the Common Room, the official opening was during an Advocacy Session. Tiana Andreello and Curtis Pratt cut the ribbon and the students ventured in to check out the new surroundings. We have been busy running various fundraising activities for the Common Room. The Sausage Sizzle was a great success and we hope that all Gilmore Students will enjoy sampling the gourmet muffins in week six.

The Common Room now has the bare essentials for cooking a few snacks, making a hot or cool drink and allows the students to enjoy their own peaceful area. The Year 12s also came up with their own rules for the common room, the final rules had some very thought out tweaking from Mrs Cook and Mr Patterson.

Artfest showcased performances and artworks from different areas of The Arts such as Media, Dance, Visual Art, Choir and Music. The Visual Art students have explored the very nature of their beings and have strived to shine their brilliance with colour and imagination. The students have vision and are committed to developing their artistic abilities. Performing Art Students such as musicians and dancers have contributed their talents to the showcase by a variety of carefully choreographed performances from the cup song in the choir to group and solo dancers who have developed skills in technique throughout the year in preparation for ARTFEST.

The Year 12s have one last reward excursion left; students who have completed all work and have kept their Good Standing will have a chance to show off their trampoline skills and agility at Bounce in Cannington. I wish all the Year 12s all the very best for the last few weeks at school. One highlight for the Term has been the selection of the House Captains. The Year 12 students had to be nominated then present a campaign to the group. After the presentations, the students split off and voted within their own factions. Congratulations to the following House Captains for 2014.

Year 8 Netball Lightning Carnival Gilmore College took 3 teams to the Netball Lightning Carnival at Fremantle Netball Association on Friday 15 August. The girls from Year 8 were supported by a few energetic Year 7s.

Gilmore College WA Volleyball Schools Cup Gilmore College entered its first ever WA Volleyball Schools Cup for 2014. A team of Year 8 and 9 girls filled a roster with four coaches from Years 9-12. The players and coaches worked hard during trainings from Week 3 – Week 7, preparing for competition during Week 7 on 5 September 2014. The training sessions and the work ethic of the players paid off as Gilmore College walked away victorious with the Year 9B Girls Championship title. Match results are as follows:

Thursday Pool Play Vs Albany, Won 2-0. Set scores: 25-14, 22-23 Vs Mercedes 1, Lost 1-2. Set scores: 25-15, 16-25, 3-5 Vs Perth Modern, Won 2-1. Set scores: 25-19, 19-25, 10-6 Vs Mercedes 2, Lost 1-2. Set scores: 25-23, 11-25, 1-4 Vs Albany, Lost 0-2. Set scores: 24-26, 21-25

Saturday Championship Vs Mercedes 1, Won 2-1. Set scores: 21-25, 26-24, 16-14 Thursday’s Pool Play saw Gilmore seated most of the day at the #1 position due to the low amount of points allowed compared to other schools. We finished the day ranked #3 and due to Albany travelling on Sunday during competition time, Gilmore College earned a ticket to the Championship versus a tough Mercedes 1 team on Sunday. Sunday was a hard fought match by both teams with tough serves and a number of pass/set/hit plays demonstrating the growth that the team experienced through the two-day tournament. Gilmore College pulled through victorious by keeping the ball in play and the celebration shouts were sure to be heard across the entire Perth Metropolitan Area and possibly all of Western Australia.

A special thanks to Mr Ingram for showing his support on the bench during the Championship Game and to the Health and Physical Education Learning Area for allowing the team plenty of gymnasium time for training sessions that paid off in the end. Isa, delawang, tatlong – GILMORE!!

Our coaches ran a few training sessions in the lead up to the carnival and we saw some good improvements and team bonding. After 5 games throughout the day, we finished runners up in the B2 Division, 3rd overall in C1 division and our C2 team won the event not losing a game throughout the entire day and only having 4 goals scored against them.

14 0 2 l House Athletics Carniva

On Friday 5 September 2014 Gilmore College held this year’s House Athletics carnival on the oval. The weather for the day was fantastic and students and teachers were eager to prove that they indeed belonged to the best House for 2014. After winning the Shield in 2013 Challenger were the favourites to win however, form in the pre carnival events suggested that this was going to be one of the closest House carnivals yet with Amity, Scindian and Cygnet all prepared to challenge for the win. After the teams gathered for the traditional hype on the College concourse, teams made their way to the field, organised themselves into their marquees and then the events began. Initial indications suggested that participation numbers were very good. 800m was the first track event and this got the day off to a very competitive start. It was great to see so many participants in such a tough event. The 200m meter finals attracted large numbers of competitors in between the various shot put, long jump, triple jump and novelty events. Times were impressive especially between the Year 10 students and Year 7 and 8 athletes. It has been also very pleasing to see a strong commitment this year from the Year 11 and 12 girls with multiple heats having to be completed to accommodate numbers. Congratulations to all athletes who competed in this event. The 400m events are traditionally the toughest events of the day as they require the athletes to run at maximum speeds for prolonged periods of time. This year numbers were up with most heats full and in some cases multiple heats needed to accommodate the numbers of competitors. After the 400m we went into the blue ribbon event of 100m. This event is the most keenly sought after win for most students as it determines the fastest boys and girls in each year group. This year’s event was sensational with fast times recorded across the board. Cameron Ogle smashed the existing Yr11/12 boys record by 2 tenths of a second! The relays often determine the final winners and placings of the Houses on the day of the carnival and as they are the team events of the day, they are personally my favourite event. This year’s relays were very competitive with clean baton changeovers being vital for success of the relay teams.

Congratulations to all competitors who made the 2014 Athletics Carnival such an overwhelming success. Thanks go to the Health and Physical Eduction staff, your teachers and students helpers on the day. Without the participation of all these people we would not be able to field so many events and run this House Carnival so successfully. Special thanks this year goes to Ms D’Rozario and Ms Neal who designed and created our House flags. If you saw them you would agree that they look sensational! Year 8 Soccer Carnival Gilmore College Senior Rugby League Team 2014 The Senior Boys Rugby League Team played their first match of the season against Atwell College on Tuesday 19 August. The following players took part, Quintin Needham (Captain), Jake Pugh, Josh Morris, Kabinah Sesay, Matthew Wachipa¸ Liam Hinga, Lucaan Cooper, Nathanael White-Wallace, Jayden Toelupe, Hamish McNicoll, Kaleb Cooper, Filo Filo, Gerardo Enua, Takanga Upu, Josh Kickett, Tevita Lavulo, Jesse Barnard-Piper, Jacques Lombaard, Jake Byrne and Samuel James. The boy’s team played Atwell College and displayed excellent courage and stamina to compete against an academy team that have been training for years. They boys toiled hard and had some very strong runs led by Quintin Needham and Jayden Toelupe . All the Gilmore Team had solid games; they scored some brilliant tries and were unlucky with a couple of runs which could have resulted in more points. Nate Wallace had an outstanding game and never gave up. Matty Wachipa obviously had a point to prove after he came on from the bench as he tackled like a man processed. Hamish McNicoll had a good defensive game and as always the Cooper brothers proved a handful for the opposition. The Gilmore boys gave everything they had in the match and can be very proud of coming away with a 22 all draw. The WARL coaching staff were very impressed with the standard of play as was the opposition coach. Well done boys. The next game is a grading game against Thornlie Senior High School. Big thanks to Ms Copeman who has very kindly washed the jerseys. In addition a big thankyou to Oliana Luvalo, Meleani Vi, and Piper Luvalo who were the water bearers. Smarter Than Smoking WA Golf Champs 2014 The Gilmore College Golf team competed at Melville Glades Country Club on Friday 6 June. Shane Carroll and Aiden Andreello represented the College and both played extremely well on a challenging course. Shane was defending his State Title; he plays off a very low handicap and couldn’t close out his round so he finished slightly behind the top five. Shane is very much respected by his fellow competitors, we wish him next year. Aiden Andreello played his first championship; he hit the ball really well and came in with a fantastic score. Aiden won the State Title for the Year 8 competition with a massive 41 points. A huge congratulations goes to Aiden, it just shows you that if you practice and dedication rewards you with success. And so……it was that time of Year again when ‘Coach Robbo’ could unleash the ferocity of his Year 8 wonder kids!!! The day started brightly as Captain Darcy Gordon lead his warriors out onto the lush turf of Cockburn’s Beale Park. First to suffer the wrath of the mighty Gilmore United FC was Atwell College. From the first whistle to the last Gilmore played tantalising football. The Year 8 ‘wonder kids’ stroked the ball around like the wonder kids of Manchester United and the first goal was nothing but ‘Beckham-esk’. Alex Dark gathered the ball from the kick off and instantly went onto the attack, he skipped around four Atwell players as if they were not there, on the by-line he sent in a pin-point cross to little Jason Nguyen, who with great technique drilled the ball into the top corner………… 1 – 0 Gilmore. The second goal came 3 minutes later when a Darcy Gordon, Mathew Paraskevas combo play divided the Atwell defence and Bodie Murcott was there to blast the ball home. A magnificent move that was straight from the training ground. From there on in, we ripped them to shreds with an array of flowing football that ‘Perth Glory’ would be proud of!!!! Final score Gilmore 2-1 Atwell. Next up was the local derby Gilmore v’s Safety Bay B. The game started with a long looping shot from their centre forward straight from the kick off. Josh Skinner was aware of the danger and tipped the shot around the post, jumping around like a kangaroo on the Nullabor. Matthew Paraskevas with his No. 1 supporter in the capacity crowd (his Mum) was brimming with confidence as he displayed great defensive technique and headed the ball away saving a certain goal from the resulting corner. The score at half time, a very tense 0-0. After a few changes and an intense team talk Gilmore wore their hearts on their sleeves!!! Alex Dark (our resident POM) picked the ball up from a long Skinner kick with sublime control, he passed the ball to an unmarkerd Johvert Mendoza, who played a 1-2 with Jaden Venditelli. With a drop of his shoulder, he sent the defender the wrong way and coolly slotted the ball past a sprawling Safety Bay keeper 1-0. With time running out however Safety Bay threw everything at Gilmore and eventually scraped an equaliser. Final score 1-1.

As the day progressed to the 3rd fixture, our travelling supporters (Leah and Mark Gordon and Kylie Paraskovic) were fantastic with their support and encouragement and I am certain it had a positive effect against our next opponents, Hamilton Hill, and if I’m honest we ‘footballed them to death’ as one onlooker quoted “Gilmore play TOTAL footy”. With flowing set pieces and a great display of teamwork and cohesion, Gilmore United dominated the first half with quality phases of play. Alex Dark delivered a fantastic in swinging corner, Darcy Gordon set off from the half way, he approached the 18 yard box and timed his run to perfection, he rose like a leaping salmon and bullet headed the ball past the helpless goalkeeper! The best goal of the day. With Hamilton Hill chasing shadows, it was time for me to ‘kick back’ and enjoy a ‘Latte’ whilst admiring my boys playing ‘pure soccer’. On the final whistle a bedraggled Hammy Hill limped off with a whimper. Their coach praising the magic of Gilmore!! The final game was a cracker, with all the tension of an FA cup final!! All we needed was a win to progress to the final; however we were playing last year’s Carnival winners and had not lost a game all day!! The final score against a well organised South Fremantle side was Gilmore 0 – 1 South Fremantle. The boys played fantastic and represented themselves, their families and most importantly ‘Gilmore College’ with grace and dignity. It was a pleasure to take the boys out for the day and I’m already looking forward to the ‘lightening carnival’ 2015, when we will go one better and win the final. During the recent school holidays, I was fortunate enough to be sponsored by the ALCOA Foundation to attend the Key Issues Institute run by the Keystone Science School in Silverthorne, Colorado USA. Thirty four teachers were brought together from Australia, The United Kingdom, Jamaica and the United States of America to participate in an intensive week long program which focused on bringing environmental issues to the classroom.

Winners The Gilmore Brekky Club Volunteers (Jordan Harris & Breanna Upton) – Mateship Award

The course centred on solving a real-life scenario on the plight of a small country town and its sudden health epidemic. Teachers from a variety of subjects and countries worked in teams to conduct a variety of tests such as testing water quality, analysing toxic chemical blooms in the soil, through to potential food poisoning from the local chicken takeaway.

The activities built to a fantastic non-biased resource that I hope to bring to my Science classes to assist students of Gilmore College in their development as global citizens. It was a fantastic experience to work with teachers from all over the world, building global networks while developing the tools to be able to deliver an innovative environmental curriculum. iTrack Program Since the beginning of Term 2, eleven Year 10 students are taking part in the online mentoring program run by the Smith Family. The students met their mentors face to face at the start and since then they go online to chat with their mentors one period every week. At the end of Term 2 they went to Murdoch University and then to National Australia Bank to meet with their mentors and have lunch. “This program helped me to explore possible career option and courses I’d like to do at school. It gave me the opportunity to meet new people and go to places like Murdoch University and a big bank like National Australian Bank, I never thought of going.” Nathan Earnshaw “The program helps me to think about what are the best job opportunities that will fit me best. The excursion was a great way to find out how it is to work in a bank. Murdoch was great to and I’m now thinking of going there once I’m finish with school.” Paige Hollands “I think it is a great program, I encourage people to take part in it” Courtney Hunter “I love getting help with school work and stuff and getting to talk to somebody about lots if things and feel comfortable doing it.” Danielle Oldham “The most important thing about iTrack is it gave me the time to talk to somebody about careers and I now know that it is important to keep my options open. It also gave me confidence in how to find a job in reality instead of just thinking about getting a job. I think my mentor is cool.” Yvonne Mukiwa “On 2July students that had joined the iTrack program got to go to Murdoch University. At Murdoch we saw the supercomputer which is as big as a room and did some fun activities such as photography. It made me realise that I wanted to go to uni and study journalism. After our visit to Murdoch we went to the NAB building in Perth City. Employees from NAB told us what they do and how many different careers there are in banking. We had lunch with our mentors and looked out over the beautiful views of the Swan River and city. Follow the Dream LyriK Award Winners Both Jordan Harris and Breanna Upton were nominated for their commitment to the Gilmore College Breakfast Club this year. Through their dedication with the Brekky Club, Jordan and Breanna have demonstrated ‘mateship’ to their peers by ensuring that students have enough sustenance each day to prepare themselves for learning. Both girls arrive at school by 7:45am to begin preparing food and drinks for other students. Both girls won the ‘Mateship’ LyriK Award for their concerted effort. Well done girls! University of Western Australia Year 9 and 10 Science Camp Kieren Milton (Year 10) and Bradley Pereyra (Year 10) were nominated and were subsequently successful in gaining a position to attend the annual UWA Science Camp held in the July School Holidays. The camp provides participants with a hands-on experience of science, engineering, medicine and technology. There is a specific emphasis on fields relevant to Indigenous communities in Western Australia, including health, ecology, water and energy and mineral resources. ASSETS (Aboriginal Summer School for Excellence in Technology and Science) ASSETS is an annual residential Science and Technology program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from across Australia. Students eligible to apply for ASSETS need to be prepared to challenge themselves academically as they will be required to solve a “crime” using advanced CSI techniques, and work in groups to research and present a scientific response to a self-generated inquiry question. Kieren Milton and another student in the Follow the Dream outreach program based at Rockingham Senior High School were successful in gaining a place to attend this fantastic academic opportunity being held in Adelaide in December, 2014. Only 30 places were made available for students from across Australia. Well done boys, this is truly a great achievement!

NAIDOC Week (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Gilmore College celebrated NAIDOC Week from Monday 4 August to Friday 8 August, 2014. Gilmore College students were involved in a number of NAIDOC activities held this year, some of which included eating Kangaroo stew, burgers and damper through to listening to storytelling as well as participating in a Staff vs. Student Netball and Footy game. Thank you to all of our community partners and parents who came to our NAIDOC Assembly this year. We would love to see more parents support us again next year. Curtin University Renewable Energy Workshops Leon Dawson from Curtin University of Technology came to visit us again this Term to encourage the Follow the Dream students to build electric circuits that would only emit specific sounds if they were constructed correctly. All of the students really enjoyed this ‘hands on’ activity. Mr. Morgan supervising Dylan Milton-Bright (Year 9) and Jackson Morton (Year 7) constructing ‘electric circuits.’

It was a great game with the first win going to the Clontarf Boys. Well done boys! Vaccination for chickenpox The Department of Health is reminding adults and children to get vaccinated for chickenpox. Chickenpox is a serious disease that can make children very sick and cause serious health complications in adults. WA has had 213 reported cases of chickenpox this year, and data from recent years shows the highest number of cases are reported in August.
