R e p o r t Dear Trojans Supporters, Since our last Annual Report, much has happened and much has changed at Bishop Chatard. We had a whirlwind first three quarters of school with students again achieving at remarkable levels academically and in their extracurricular activities. And then, as in so many other areas of society, school life, as we have known it, came to a screeching halt. Thankfully, our preparedness for eLearning paid off as our gifted and dedicated teachers were able to deliver the curriculum and students were able to successfully complete their courses and receive college credit for their AP and Dual credit classes at the same rate as they have historically. And, thanks be to God, we were able to complete all of the class retreats before the shutdown. The members of the class of 2020 were challenged with finishing their time here without all of the special Spring extracurricular events that they have looked forward to for the past four years: our Spring musical, concert, sports, prom, baccalaureate and graduation. All was not lost however, as, on a beautiful evening on July 23, we held Bishop Chatard’s 56th commencement ceremony in our newly completed stadium to the delight of the Class of 2020 and their parents.

On the financial side, we had current school families who were economically impacted by the pandemic. In response, we asked the Bishop Chatard community to help us help these families keep their students in school with the “Trojans Helping Trojans” fundraiser and were overwhelmed (but not surprised) with the generosity of this great community. We are truly blessed to have such a generous and caring community who make possible the Bishop Chatard whole person formation experience with their financial and prayerful support. And, despite all the challenges of the pandemic, we are confident that this great community will continue to support the important work of this school we all love and cherish. A fantastic crowd came dressed to impress at this year’s Roaring Twenties-themed Chatard-A-Bration! Guests dined, danced and, of course, bid on unique auction items found nowhere but the Bishop Chatard live and silent auction. We didn’t know at the time that this would be our last large community gathering before COVID-19 changed the way we live, and we are grateful to have had this time to enjoy the Bishop Chatard community together. Bishop Chatard extends a sincere thank you to all who donated auction items, sponsored the event, volunteered for committees and, of course, joined us at the event. Led by our Roaring Twenties event chairs, Brad and Eileen Countryman, the funds raised at Chatard-A-Bration continue to help make Bishop Chatard the outstanding Catholic high school it is today. A significant amount of money was raised this year to support academic and extracurricular programs at BCHS, including over $35,000 specifically for our Fund-A-Theatre-Need which will help purchase new stage and production equipment.

Achievement Awards
The Achievement Award is the highest honor given by Bishop Chatard High School, recognizing individuals who selflessly serve and support the Archdiocese of Indianapolis North Deanery high school and its students. This annual award celebrates the generosity, kindness and support that surround and bless Bishop Chatard High School. Individuals who epitomize the Catholic mission and values of Bishop Chatard are nominated by the community and recognized at the high school’s Annual Fund Dinner. It was early April when we reached out to our community asking for support in our shift from a planned Day of Giving and a Student Walk-a-Thon to build an emergency relief fund to help some of our families suffering from a loss of income due to COVID-19.

You stepped up and helped us raise nearly $45,000 with every dollar donated going directly to benefit the 24 families in danger of their child not being able to complete their Bishop Chatard education as a result of the pandemic. We have said it before, and it rings true even stronger today – we are so appreciative of this community and how you support the needs of Bishop Chatard! You belong in a special category of ‘champions’ for caring for our school and those in our community. Thank you for caring so much. Your gift, whether large or small, has had an impact that is evident in the confidence we see in our students and families as we begin this new school year. We are stronger because of you!

EVENTS AT BISHOP CHATARD The Bishop Chatard Office of Institutional Advancement hosts a number of activities and initiatives throughout the year to drive enrollment, engage alumni and garner financial support. Among these are the Annual Fund Drive, Open House, Chatard-A-Bration, Christmas on Crittenden and more. In recent years, many of these events, including our Golf Outing, have been sell outs! 2019 ‘A’ LETTER GRADE The Indiana Department of Education awarded an ‘A’ letter grade to Bishop Chatard for the 2018-2019 school year. Indiana’s A-F model holds schools and corporations to a higher standard and provides a more accurate picture of their performance by incorporating student academic growth and graduation rates, as well as college and career readiness, as measures of success.
FOUR STAR SCHOOL Bishop Chatard has consistently been named a Four Star School of Indiana by the Indiana Department of Education. In order to achieve this designation, a school must be in the top 25th percentile of schools in two ISTEPbased categories.
A SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE Bishop Chatard was honored in 2014 as a School of Excellence by the Catholic Education Honor Roll, part of the Cardinal Newman Society. Schools are awarded the designation based on the integration of Catholic identity throughout all aspects of their programs and excellence in academics.
MASTER LEVEL THRIVING SCHOOL Bishop Chatard High School was recognized in 2019 by the City of Indianapolis as a Master Level Indianapolis Thriving School. The Indianapolis Thriving Schools Challenge is a green schools certification program that focuses on early education about sustainability and engaging children and young adults in important topics like environmental stewardship, social responsibility, waste reduction and conservation of resources.
ACCREDITATION Bishop Chatard is accredited by AdvancEd, the national accrediting agency, and is committed to the education of the whole person. While emphasis is placed on academics, students deepen their faith through retreats, liturgical celebrations, and service projects. They strive to develop their talents and interests through a broad spectrum of extracurricular activities.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT AWARD Bishop Chatard High School was recognized in 2019 by the Indiana Dept. of Education for exemplary performance on Advanced Placement exams in 2018. A school must have at least 25 percent of a graduating class receive a 3 or higher on an AP exam to receive the Advanced Placement Award from Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Jennifer McCormick, and Bishop Chatard’s Class of 2018 had 42 percent reach this level of achievement. BCHS was in the top 3 percent of Indiana high schools. (At the time of publication, 2020 awards had not been announced.)
