Match background A determined rearguard action helped Anorthosis Famagusta FC, the first Cypriot club to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage, draw 0-0 away to Werder Bremen on Matchday 1 – giving them a point more than Panathinaikos FC after the Greek side began with a 2-0 home defeat by FC Internazionale Milano. • Bremen created a host of chances at the Weserstadion but were unable to break down Temuri Ketsbaia's Anorthosis team who, on their debut in the competition proper, proved themselves to be well-organised and hard-working. • To make history, Anorthosis needed to overcome all three qualifying hurdles and matching 3-0 home victories in the second and third rounds was testament to their form on home soil. Their ticket to the group stage came at the expense of Panathinaikos's fierce rivals, Olympiacos CFP, and a repeat of that 3-0 success at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in the third qualifying round first leg would do them nicely on Matchday 2. On that occasion Vassilis Torosidis – an own goal – Lukasz Sosin and Vincent Laban scored the Cypriot club's goals which proved more than adequate insurance for the game in Athens which ended 1-0 to Olympiacos. • In the previous stage Anorthosis recorded a 3-0 home victory over SK Rapid Wien, progressing despite a 3-1 second-leg defeat in Austria, after overcoming FC Pyunik 3-0 on aggregate in the first qualifying round (winning 1-0 at home). • Before the third qualifying round Anorthosis had met Greek opposition on two occasions. The first, also against Olympiacos, came in the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round when the Cypriot side went down 2-1 away and then 4-2 at home. In the 2002/03 UEFA Cup first round they faced Iraklis FC and although they lost the away leg 4-2, a 3-1 win in the return took them through on away goals. • Panathinaikos, third in Greece's Super League in 2007/08, had hoped to inflict more first-match disappointment on Inter but goals in either half from Mancini and substitute Adriano – both taking advantage of set-up play from Zlatan Ibrahimović – gave the Italian champions a contrasting start to the preceding two seasons when they had lost on Matchday 1. • Henk Ten Cate's team, who are in their eighth UEFA Champions League campaign, prevailed 2-1 at AC Sparta Praha in the third qualifying round first leg before a 1-0 home win meant they went through with a two-goal cushion.

MATCH PRESS KIT

• In their last UEFA Champions League campaign in 2005/06, Panathinaikos lost all three away games in the group, conceding 13 goals in total. They succumbed 5-0 at FC Barcelona, 5-1 at Bremen and 3-0 at Udinese Calcio. The previous season they managed two draws and a defeat away from home. Their last victory on their travels came in December 2003 when they gained a 3-1 triumph at Rangers FC. Since then they have played six away matches, recording four defeats and two draws. • The Athens club have encountered only one Cypriot opponent in European competition until now. That was in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round in 1988/89 when they overcame AC Omonia 1-0 away and 2-0 at home. • Defender Traianos Dellas, a summer signing by Anorthosis from AEK Athens FC, was part of Greece's UEFA EURO 2004™-winning squad alongside Panathinaikos pair Giannis Goumas and Giorgos Karagounis. • The other Matchday 2 game in Group B is between Inter and Bremen.

Match facts Anorthosis UEFA milestones • None UEFA Champions League statistics • Eight Anorthosis players have appeared in all seven games, including qualifying: Arian Beqaj, Nicolaos Katsavakis, Jeffrey Leiwakabessy, Andreas Constantinou, Nikos Nikolaou, Vincent Laban, Cédric Bardon and Lukasz Sosin. Disciplinary information • Siniša Dobrašinović is available having been suspended on Matchday 1. Latest domestic information • Saturday 27 September: AEL Limassol FC 0-2 Anorthosis Famagusta FC (Sosin 70, Dellas 81) Two goals in the final 20 minutes maintained Anorthosis' 100 per cent start to the Division A season. Sosin made the all-important breakthrough when he headed in Paulo Costa's centre from close range before Traianos Dellas scored his first goal for Anorthosis with another header after AEL had failed to clear a corner. • "Whichever side had scored first would have taken control of the game in my opinion," said coach Temuri Ketsbaia. "We struck first, got the second and our job became a lot easier. Now we have to put the league behind us and concentrate on our next Champions League match as a tough game awaits us this Wednesday against Panathinaikos. We will be up against a very good side so we are calling on everyone to come and support us in our first ever Champions League group match at home. With their help, we can push for a famous victory." • The game at the Tsirium Athletic Centre was witnessed by Panathinaikos coach Henk ten Cate. • Dellas' goal was his first for club or country since scoring for AEK Athens FC in a 4-1 win at Ergotelis FC on 23 December 2007. • Since confirming their place in the UEFA Champions League group stage, Anorthosis have conceded just once in all competitions, against Ethnikos Achnas FC on 22 September. • The result extends Anorthosis' unbeaten run in Division A to 37 matches (25 of them wins), stretching back to a 1-0 loss at APOEL FC on 28 April 2007. • Leiwakabessy set up one and scored another as Anorthosis returned to domestic action after Matchday 1 with a 2-1 league victory at home to Ethnikos. The Dutch defender teed up the opener for Dobrašinović midway through the first half, and though Lars Schlichting equalised soon after, Leiwakabessy restored the lead seven minutes after the restart. • The strike was Leiwakabessy's first ever league goal in professional football. He failed to register in over 200 appearances for NEC Nijmegen and TSV Alemannia Aachen in the Netherlands and Germany, but took just three games to get off the mark in Cyprus. He dedicated the strike to his newborn son. • The Ethnikos triumph was Anorthosis' sixth successive home win and extended their unbeaten home run to 35 games in all competitions. The last time Ketsbaia's team tasted defeat on their own turf was 27 January 2007 when AC Omonia defeated them 2-0.

MATCH PRESS KIT

• The second qualifying round second leg against FC Dinamo Tbilisi was Goumas' 70th match in Europe, more than anybody else has ever mustered for Panathinaikos, and he also featured against Inter. Only three players have made more UEFA club competition appearances for Greek clubs; Antonis Nikopolidis (83 matches), Predrag Djordjević (78) and Nikos Liberopoulos (76). Disciplinary information • Panathinaikos have no players suspended or within a booking of a ban. Latest domestic information • The OACA Spiro Louis Stadium hosted a Madonna concert on Saturday 27 September, so Panathinaikos' home match against Ergotelis FC was postponed until 29 October. • While some would have relished the opportunity for a rest, Panathinaikos coach Henk ten Cate had a different view, saying: "I would have preferred to have played next week, but I guess Madonna's magnitude surpasses that of Panathinaikos." • Nilsson is anticipating a difficult encounter against Anorthosis, saying: "It will be a tough match. They have already eliminated Olympiacos and showed themselves more than capable of causing upsets." • With no weekend Super League engagement, Panathinaikos organised a friendly with fourth-tier Athinaikos FC on 23 September. Antonis Petropoulos and Lazaros Hristodoulopoulos certainly enjoyed the run-out, scoring a hat-trick apiece in a 6-0 win. • Following their Matchday 1 loss to Inter, Ten Cate's side had returned to domestic action with a 2-1 victory at Aris Thessaloniki FC on 20 September. The visitors had to come from behind after Javito's tenth-minute opener, but Cleyton (19) quickly restored parity on what was his Super League debut for the side before Andreas Ivanschitz (26) completed the turnaround. • It was Ivanschitz's second goal in as many league outings having also struck in the 3-0 victory at home to Panthrakikos FC on 13 September. Indeed, he has had two shots this season and scored with both. • Six Panathinaikos players have featured in every Super League match this season: Galinović, Simão, Nikos Spiropoulos, Gilberto, Ivanschitz and Salpingidis. Galinović, Simão and Spiropoulos have played every minute. • Panathinaikos pair Giorgos Karagounis and Goumas, along with Ergotelis' Dimitris Orfanos, were the only Greek players to score in the opening three rounds of the Super League, contributing three out of the 51 goals. Injury news • Vangelis Mantzios – out since 8 September (appendix) • Ante Rukavina – out 10 August to 13 September (right groin) • Giorgos Karagounis – out since 16 September (left calf) • Christos Melissis – out since 22 September (flu) • Karagounis is expected to be sidelined until mid-October following his knock in the first half against Inter. • Mantzios has resumed training after undergoing appendix surgery on 8 September and is expected to be back in first-team contention in a fortnight. Summer transfers •In Cleyton (Larissa FC) Alexandros Tzorvas (OFI Crete FC) Andreas Ivanschitz (FC Salzburg) Ante Rukavina (HNK Hajduk Split) Gabriel (Fluminense FC) Gilberto (Arsenal FC) Rodrigo Souza (CR Flamenco) Christos Melissis (PAOK FC) Lazaros Hristodoulopoulos (PAOK FC) Bryce Moon (Ajax Cape Town FC)

Anorthosis Famagusta FC - Panathinaikos FC

Wednesday 1 October 2008 - 20.45 CET

MATCH PRESS KIT Head coach

Anorthosis Famagusta FC: Temuri Ketsbaia Date of birth: 18 March 1968 Nationality: Georgian Playing career: ASMC Sokhumi, FC Dinamo Tbilisi, Anorthosis Famagusta FC, AEK Athens FC, Newcastle United FC, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, Dundee FC Coaching career: Anorthosis Famagusta FC Former Georgian international Temuri Ketsbaia wrote himself into Cypriot football folklore when he guided Anorthosis Famagusta FC into the group phase of the UEFA Champions League in 2008/09, becoming the first club from the Mediterranean island to do so. Born in the Georgian district of Gali, Ketsbaia was spotted by former Anorthosis chairman Kikis Konstantinou in 1992 while playing for FC Dinamo Tbilisi and was quickly lured to the club. His dribbling skills, coupled with a ferocious shooting ability and gritty attitude on the pitch soon persuaded AEK Athens FC to sign him in 1994 where he would go on to win the Greek Cup. Ketsbaia longed to play in England and his dream of playing Premier League football became a reality when Kenny Dalglish bought him to Newcastle United FC in 1997. He gained legendary status at St James' Park when he scored an injury-time equaliser in the final qualifying round to take Newcastle into the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League group stage. Ketsbaia later said that he had learnt a lot from working under Dalglish. Short spells at Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and Dundee FC followed before returning back to Anorthosis in 2004. Midway through the 2003/04 season, he was appointed player-manager and the following year he secured the club's 12th Division A title. He guided Anorthosis to the Cypriot Cup in 2006/07 and another league title a year later – going all season unbeaten – but it was the club's elimination of Trabzonspor in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round that really made him a hit among the supporters.

Panathinaikos FC: Henk Ten Cate Date of birth: 9 December 1954 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: AFC Ajax, BV Vitesse (both youth), FC Rheden, Go Ahead Eagles, Edmonton Drillers, Telstar, Heracles Almelo Coaching career: Go Ahead Eagles, Heracles Almelo, FC Rheden, Sparta Rotterdam, BV Vitesse, KFC Uerdingen 05, MTK Hungária FC, NAC Breda, FC Barcelona (assistant), AFC Ajax, Chelsea FC (assistant), Panathinaikos FC The much-travelled Henk ten Cate enjoyed spells in the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Spain and England before opting to try his luck in Greece with Panathinaikos FC. Born in Amsterdam, Ten Cate spent the majority of an unspectacular playing career in the Netherlands. A speedy winger, he starred for amateur club FC Rheden before taking his first steps in the Eredivisie in 1979/80 with Go Ahead Eagles. After loan spells with Canadian club Edmonton Drillers and Dutch side Telstar, Ten Cate ended his playing career in 1986 at Heracles Almelo having scored 22 goals in 151 top-flight appearances. He returned to Go Ahead in 1988 as assistant then head coach before stints with Heracles and Rheden. After a second spell at Go Ahead, Ten Cate took charge of Sparta Rotterdam between 1995 and 1997, before steering BV Vitesse to third in the Eredivisie in 1998, the club's best-ever finish. His reputation began to spread beyond the Dutch borders, prompting spells with KFC Uerdingen 05 in Germany and Hungarian club MTK Hungária FC. Three more years' diligent work back in his homeland with NAC Breda, whom he led into Europe for the first time in 30 years via a fourth-placed finish in 2003, sparked a switch to FC Barcelona where he enjoyed three wonderful seasons as Frank Rijkaard's right-hand man. The Dutch pair transformed the Catalan club's fortunes, winning two league titles and, in 2005/06, the UEFA Champions League. Shortly after that victory against Arsenal FC, Ten Cate took the top job at AFC Ajax, yet after missing out on title to PSV Eindhoven on goal difference but winning the Dutch Cup, in October 2007 he returned to an assistant role, this time with Avram Grant at Chelsea FC. Ten Cate left Stamford Bridge after Chelsea's UEFA Champions League final defeat by Manchester United FC in May 2008, subsequently signing a two-year contract with Panathinaikos.

MATCH PRESS KIT UEFA information

UEFA statement on EURO 2012™ UEFA has reaffirmed its commitment to staging UEFA EURO 2012™ in Poland and Ukraine. The UEFA Executive Committee reached this decision at its meeting in Bordeaux, France, on 26 September. The committee has set a number of conditions which the 2012 co-hosts must meet to move forward the organisation of the tournament in four summers' time, with UEFA deciding in particular on the number of stadiums to be used – a maximum of eight and a minimum of six. The completion of stadiums in the two capitals, Warsaw (Poland) and Kiev (Ukraine), is seen as crucial to the 2012 project. The UEFA Executive Committee stressed a number of conditions which must be met in order to bring the whole project forward, including: • Both host countries must continue to make the necessary efforts as any slackening could put in doubt the organisation of this tournament in these countries; • UEFA will decide how many and which stadiums (and therefore cities) will be used as venues for the competition, with a minimum of six and a maximum of eight, taking into account that contracts have been signed with eight stadiums, cities and airports; • There will not necessarily be the same number of venues (cities) per country; • The completion of the Kiev and Warsaw stadiums remains an essential element of the whole project; • The governments of both countries must support their national associations and fulfil the commitments they gave to UEFA in the scope of the project, notably concerning accommodation and transport infrastructures. EURO expansion Also in Bordeaux, the UEFA Executive Committee approved the expansion of the final tournament of the UEFA European Championship from 16 to 24 teams, as from the 2016 edition. The format of the final tournament will consist of six groups of four teams, followed by a round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. The top two from each group would qualify in addition to the four best third-ranked sides. This format would generate a total of 51 games, compared with 31 now, to be played over a period of 29 to 31 days depending on the match schedule. The traditional qualifying structure, with groups of six and five teams, will remain in place. UEFA Cup to become UEFA Europa League The UEFA Executive Committee also endorsed the change of name for the UEFA Cup to the UEFA Europa League from 2009/10. The new name heralds major changes to the competition, which will have a new 48-team group stage with centralised marketing of broadcast rights, a presenting sponsor and an official matchball in addition to centralised sponsorship from the knockout stage and a new logo and visual identity. UEFA President Michel Platini said: "These changes will improve this historic competition, which is very important for UEFA and for European football as it gives more fans, players and clubs the thrill of European club football. I am convinced the new format will give the UEFA Europa League a successful new impetus." Investigative unit UEFA's efforts to help protect the integrity of football have been strengthened by a decision by the UEFA Executive Committee, which agreed to reinforce UEFA's disciplinary services by improving the current UEFA early-warning system on issues involving possible corruption or betting irregularities. Two additional full-time staff and four additional disciplinary inspectors, with specific experience in criminal investigation and good police contacts, will be recruited to work full time for UEFA. "The integrity of football is fundamental to the success of the sport," said UEFA General Secretary David Taylor. "Uncertainty of outcome is what makes sport interesting. If matches are manipulated, it is the biggest and most serious danger to our game." Zero tolerance for racism and discrimination UEFA begins the latest UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup seasons determined to step up its fight to eliminate the evil of racism and intolerance from football. The message is clear – there will be zero tolerance of any racism or discrimination, on or off the field, at UEFA matches during the 2008/09 campaign. Furthermore, UEFA's match delegates and officials are being urged to play a full role in catching the perpetrators. The UEFA President called on match delegates to do everything within their power to help the European body and the Football Against Racism in Europe network (FARE) to fight racism effectively. "It is vital that your post-match reports ... demonstrate no leniency whatsoever in the face of violent, racist or discriminatory behaviour on the part of players, club officials, technical staff or fans," said Mr Platini in a recent letter to UEFA match officials. "UEFA policy is clear: zero tolerance of violence, racism or discrimination."

MATCH PRESS KIT Competition facts • UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones

Holders Manchester United FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos CFP on Matchday 1 at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in the 2006/07 season at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on Matchday 6. Laurent Blanc is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days, having found the net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002. Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. In 2006/07, PFC Levski Sofia joined 1. FC Košice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. The Slovakian side have not returned to the competition since losing all six games in their only campaign to date in 1997/98. Six other teams have gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point: FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06) and RSC Anderlecht (2004/05) plus FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage). Dynamo also conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2007/08, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC in the 1995/96 campaign. Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Matchday 6 of the 2006/07 campaign, FC Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a win in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on Matchday 3 of the same campaign. The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and Werder Bremen in 2005/06. Last updated: 01.09.2008

MATCH PRESS KIT Team facts Anorthosis Famagusta FC

UEFA club competition milestones • Regular participants in European football since making their debut in the 1963/64 European Champion Clubs' Cup, Anorthosis's most successful season in continental competition came in 2002/03 when they overcame CS Grevenmacher and Iraklis FC to reach the UEFA Cup second round, only losing to a single goal in both legs against eventual semi-finalists Boavista FC. UEFA Champions League milestones • The Cypriot club first competed in qualifying for Europe's premier club competition in 1995/96 – although they did appear in the European Cup in 1963/64 – and won through to the second qualifying round twice in the 1990s before going one better in 1999/2000 but losing 2-0 on aggregate to Hertha BSC Berlin. They lost to Rangers FC at the same stage in 2005, setting the scene for their remarkable success three years later. FC Pyunik (3-0) and SK Rapid Wien (4-3) were overcome before a 3-0 home win paved the way for a 3-1 aggregate success against Olympiacos CFP in the third qualifying round, making Anorthosis the first team from Cyprus to reach the competition's group stage. UEFA club competition honours • N/A Ten-year record 2007/08: UEFA Cup – first round 2006/07: Did not compete in UEFA club competition 2005/06: UEFA Cup – first round (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 2004/05: UEFA Cup – qualifying round 2003/04: UEFA Cup – qualifying round 2002/03: UEFA Cup – second round 2001/02: UEFA Intertoto Cup – first round 2000/01: UEFA Champions League – second qualifying round 1999/00: UEFA Cup – first round (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 1998/99: UEFA Cup – first round (having transferred from UEFA Champions League second qualifying round) 2007/08 season Domestic record: A dominant campaign ended with Anorthosis eleven points clear at the top of Division A having remained unbeaten throughout the 26-game season – winning 19 of those matches. The season ended in disappointment, however, as APOEL FC inflicted a 2-0 defeat in the Cypriot Cup final to deny Anorthosis the double. European record: Anorthosis's season started in July with a tie against FK Vardar in the UEFA Cup first qualifying round, the Cypriot club winning both legs 1-0 to set up a meeting with CFR 1907 Cluj. A 3-1 first-leg win in Romania was followed by a goalless draw in the return, giving Anorthosis a first-round tie against Tottenham Hotspur FC. The English side were 6-1 first-leg winners in north London, although a 1-1 draw in the return restored some pride.
