Writing: APA Citation Periodicals Journal Article 1. Do not use “Vol” before the volume number. 2.

Cite the issue number in parentheses only if each issue begins on page 1.

Magazine 1. Give the date shown on the publication--month for monthlies or month and day for weeklies. 2. Cite the volume number.

Newspaper 1.

If an article appears on discontinuous pages, give all page numbers, separated by a comma (e.g. pp. A1-A3, A5, A7).

Books One Author 1. Give the city and state for a city that is not well known in publishing.

Editor 1. Place the editor’s name in the author’s position with Ed. or Eds. in parentheses after the name. 2. Capitalize the first word of the title and the first word after a colon.

No Author 1. Alphabetize by first significant word in the title. 2. Cite the source as Anonymous only if specifically printed anonymously (check the title page).

Two or More Authors 1. If there are two authors, join the names with a comma followed by &. 2. Invert each author’s name, giving surname and initials. 3. For more than six authors, list only the first six and add et al.

Reference List Basics A reference list is a record of all the sources cited in a paper through direct quotes or paraphrasing. (A bibliography is a list of resources on a topic. It includes the references plus additional works that are not cited in the paper.) 1. 2. 3. 4.

The reference list appears at the end of a paper. It is double spaced and is titled References, not Reference List. The citations must be organized in alphabetical order by the lead authors’ or editors’ last names. Citations with the same author are arranged by publication year, starting with the earliest. If the citation is longer than one line, the second line and each subsequent line must be indented.
