See our latest edition online! www.warwickdirectories.co.uk/Latest-Editions How has November arrived so quickly? One minute the kids are going back to school and you’re still wearing summer clothes, the next thing you know, there are advent calendars next to the Halloween sweets in the supermarket and you daren’t leave the house without your brolly! Hopefully, Halloween has been enjoyed and now it’s headlong into Christmas. So, in our Village News pages you will find the start of the influx of Christmas events…Fair’s, church services, events and so on. I feel a big thank you and a round of applause must go out to our fabulous delivery team, who soldiered on through last months rain to bring you your magazine……there is no doubt that they got very wet as there were so few windows of opportunity to get out when it wasn’t raining. Today is the very best of Autumn days…the sun is shining and there is not too much of a chill in the air – these are my favourites and I hope we have many more in the months to come. Enjoy November, Best wishes Hilton & Dove Valley

BANKS MILL

Banks Mill Studios, one of the University of Derby’s incubation centres specialising in the creative industries, is celebrating 20 years of providing space and support for businesses in Derby. Over the last two decades, Banks Mill has supported more than 382 businesses, 135 of which being University of Derby graduates. The building, which now supports 72 tenants and members, was officially opened on 1 October 1999 by Dr Michael Porter, a renowned UK and international artist who has won numerous major awards; including an Honorary Doctor in Fine Art Award by the University of Derby.  To help us celebrate this milestone you are invited to our Open Studios event, where you can to see work from over 50 different artists, designers, makers and creative services providers.  Karen Holland, co-ordinator at Banks Mill comments: “At the event you can find out how our artists create their unique designs and products as well as buy original work, something that can’t be experienced on the high street. You can also meet one of our creative service businesses to discuss how they can work with you. To keep our youngest visitors engaged we also have an arts trail for them to follow too.” One artist you can meet is Magdalena Aron who has recently moved into Banks Mill running Minoan Mosaic Studio. With a background in ceramics, a BA (Hons) degree and teaching experience Magdalena will be offering workshops and classes in mosaic art for adults and children of all abilities from her new studio. Melanie Dawes is also another new artist to the studios. Melanie is in the early stages of her new business making bespoke headbands. After having several requests from friends for her designs she decided to take the plunge and now has her own studio running Lillie Rose Accessories. Such is the diversity within the Mill, you can also meet Alexey Morozov. Alexey, from Latvia, came to the UK in 2014 to study at the University of Derby. A young and vibrant fashion designer, Alexey combines creative talent with the development of a variety of materials to create his collections. The brand also encompasses a tailoring and alterations service for high end and luxury design.

Birdwatching for Beginners Walk at Carsington Water The colder weather seems to be upon us and by early November we can certainly expect numerous bird species, chiefly wildfowl, to have moved south to take safe (and, for them, relatively warm) haven at Carsington Water. Some will be passing through, but many will see the reservoir as a temporary home until they move north again to breed next year. One regular ‘star’ is the Great Northern Diver, a relative inland rarity that has returned faithfully each winter for the last 15 years, and often arrives in early November. As well as ducks and other waterfowl, winter thrushes Redwing and Fieldfare - should be here, too, along with a number of other smaller birds taking refuge from the extreme cold of northern mainland Europe. Spotting the birds is also a bit easier this time of year, with trees and shrubs shedding their leaves, so the fast-approaching winter does offer the birdwatcher some advantages.

3rd November - our next walk meeting at 10am in the courtyard at the Visitor Centre where knowledgeable and experienced birders will be on hand to help you identify the species on display. Book your free place on this or future walks, which are all held from 10am on the 1st Sunday of each month throughout the year, finishing around noon in the warm and dry Wildlife Centre overlooking the reservoir. By November it’s likely to be chilly, so keep an eye on the forecast and wear sensible clothing and footwear... And most important of all - don’t forget your binoculars! Happy birding. Visitor Centre 0330 6780 701.

Dining Out:

The Plough Inn

Normanton on Soar is located in the Soar Valley, south Nottinghamshire. Now known locally as Normanton, this is a pretty, picturesque village. The River Soar attracts many to this area, including boating enthusiasts, plus wildlife and nature lovers, walkers, ramblers and cyclists. The village dates from at least the 11th Century. The Plough Inn (Bar and Restaurant) has beautiful river views, offering customers and guests delightful sights and scenes of the immediate area. The garden leads to the river and has moorings for boats. The pub was, historically, a coaching inn and dates from the 17th Century. Truly, a warm greeting awaits - on this occasion by Darrell. The décor and ambience portray peace and relaxation. Starters can include Prawn Cocktail, plus excellent Charcoal and Red Velvet Prawns (tried and tested), through Peking Duck Spring Rolls (Two duck pancakes, hoi sin sauce, spring onion, salad), to Sharing Platters. Main courses are served with a selection of freshly prepared vegetables and a bowl of chips, with complimentary top-up service (also, seasonal salad and new potatoes, if requested) and offer an exemplary array, with something for all tastes, including ‘favourites’ of Steak & Kidney Pie, Lasagne and Pork Ribs. Gammon, Cod Loin and Mushroom Stroganoff all have ‘devotees’, too. The Salmon Fillet Royal arrives delicately poached (as the menu suggests) with lemon & chive. Cooked and presented to perfection and without hesitation, of course, ‘Compliments to Chef’ are justly deserved. Succulent and complementing flavours are in abundance, with this dish. Fillet Steaks, Barnsley Chop and Chicken Diane are all regular selections, for many diners, also. Desserts bring the dining occasion towards a (reluctant) close and Lemon Melting Pudding, from an excellent menu, does not disappoint. Light lunches and snacks are available, too. Wines/drinks have something for all palates and gift vouchers are available - now there’s a thought! Parties and events can be easily arranged and accommodated, especially with the Plough having an attractive function room. Wedding receptions are a speciality and very popular, with the peaceful, venue setting. Many thanks to Darrell and Sophia for impeccable service throughout. A recommended riverside pub, bar and restaurant. Well it’s November and subject to all sorts of things we may be having a budget this month, or possibly December, either way the current Chancellor has previously made several noises about stamp duty reform and during his campaign so did the current Prime Minister - whilst there are few people who would welcome a significant drop in this penal tax it was not mentioned in The Queen’s Speech - this leaves a whole bunch of people delaying their decision about buying, or selling, until any definite measures are introduced and made law. Result: a slowing down of a very delicate property market, pending an announcement. The only mention in the speech of a housing-related issue was buried in a pledge to introduce Building Safety Standards legislation, which should be good news and may hopefully make life easier for new home buyers to sort out their snagging issues after buying a lovely new home - not many folks would argue with that. So let’s all wait and see what happens and keep our fingers crossed that Stamp Duty Reform heads in the right direction.

Damson Gin November is a great month, we are well into the Autumnal season with darker evenings, crisper mornings and cosy fires to keep us warm - I just love this time of year!!! Autumn itself spells the end of season for certain fruits and as a keen forager I love seeing all the ripened damson, sloes, apples and plums become victims of windfall - this is when you know the fruit is just right to pick and ready for the pot………… or in my case the gin bottle!!! Getting the fruit in the gin at the beginning of November will see you right for a great Christmas (yes, I said the festive word already) tipple so be quick with these 3 simple ingredients!!!!!!

For the Gin:

Method:

1Ltr of Good Dry Gin (keep the bottle) 500g Damson 250g Golden caster Sugar

Once you have sourced the Damsons (a good local greengrocer will have some if you can’t find any to pick yourself) put them in a freezer bag and freeze overnight. The reason behind this is the freezer will replicate natures first frost which will help sweeten the fruit and make the damsons a little softer once defrosted. Once out of the freezer set to one side to defrost before pricking each damson with a knife (hold the fruit in a tea towel to protect your fingers). Sterilize a 2 litre jar and add the fruit to the bottom. Next add the sugar and finally add the gin. Stir well and seal. Place in a cool corner of the kitchen and stir every day for a week until the sugar has all dissolved and the gin has turned a lovely deep purple colour - now leave the jar until you are ready to strain and drink!!! To strain the gin use a sieve, a tea towel and a large jug - passing the stewed liquid through the tea towel and sieve into the jug and leaving to settle for a while before putting the strained gin back in the original gin bottle, the longer you now leave then gin the thicker and sweeter it will become. I usually strain my gin on Christmas Eve as Santa loves damson Gin with his Mince Pie!!!!

Late Bloomers Autumn is the time some of us cut back and tidy up our gardens ready for the winter. But the autumn garden can be full of colour as some plants are just beginning their show. Here’s some of my favourite late bloomers. Chrysanthemums are well known house plants but there are lots of lessor known types that thrive in the garden and are safe to leave out over winter. This year we have been trying these lovely flowers in our garden for the first time. “Dixter Orange” is a short, bushy plant that is absolutely smothered with bright orange double flowers from mid-July and into October is still put on a brilliant show. “Clara Curtis” is more subdued, with pale pink single flowers. Hardy Chrysanthemums can be left in the ground all year but should be lifted and divided in spring every two years. Give them a sunny spot in well-drained soil and they’ll give you a wonderful autumn display every year. Another flower just coming into its own is Bidens aurea. Not at all like the tender Bidens we use in hanging baskets this is more like the annual flowered Cosmos but is totally perennial and hardy in well-drained soils. It gets tall (4-5ft / 120-150cm) but doesn’t need staking. There are two varieties to look out for - the unnamed pale lemon one and “Hanneys Lemon Drop” that is sunshine yellow with pale yellow tips to the petals. These are spreading plants so give them some room and dig them up in spring annually to keep them in check. The flowers are very fragrant and loved by bees and butterflies. Japanese Anemones have also been looking good in late summer and will continue to flower into the autumn. Mostly their flowers come in various shades of pink or pure white, each with a bold yellow knob at the centre. We grow Honorine Jobert (white) and September Charm (pink). They can take quite a while to get established in the garden, sometimes a few years, but once they get their roots down there’s no stopping them! In fact, make sure you are certain of the position when you plant them as the deep roots of an established plant will keep on coming through for a long time after a plant has been moved. Helianthus, perennial sunflowers, are some of the best late bloomers adding a splash of sunshine colour and perhaps more surprisingly a whiff of chocolate scent to the autumn garden. The variety “Bitter Chocolate” is just starting to flower at the end of September and they exude the unmistakable scent of drinking chocolate on a warm, sunny day. For more flower power, but alas no scent, try the well-loved “Lemon Queen”, the large flowered “Happy Days” or the new variety “Helios”. All are putting on an amazing show and attracting an appreciative audience of bees and butterflies. These are just a few of the late bloomers on display in our garden through autumn so I don’t rush to put the garden to bed for the winter too soon. Martin Blow
