THE GOODMAN CHALLENGE 2006-2007 and Beyond

ONE TEAM ONE GOAL SOARING TO $1 MILLION Nearly two years ago, benefactor Murray H. Goodman challenged the university, the athletics department, and athletic supporters to match the generosity of a historic gift that he generously provided. The Athletics Partnership is aiming to meet and exceed his expectations during the 2007 fiscal year. We will look to the entire athletics community to get involved and lend their support!

Valuing Achievement...Building Champions

From Joe Sterrett ‘76 Goodman Dean of Athletics Dear Athletics Partners,

September 2006

Another academic year, another set of competitive seasons, another group of first year student-athletes, another group of senior leaders, and another chance to fulfill dreams and hopes, expectations and aspirations. Another opportunity to help young people develop through experiencing the challenges and rewards of college sports. Unlike some people who find the routine of their work lives to be uninspiring, I continue to find great excitement in our educational mission, in our professional staff, and in our students. The investment we make in their undergraduate lives pays dividends for a lifetime, if we do it well. And I think we are doing it well…..in almost every area. Evidence of achievement, academically, athletically, and in terms of distinctive leadership is summarized throughout this Annual Report. However, the one area with highly measurable and observable results where we did not achieve according to expectation or capability was our Athletics Partnership Program. Ironically, and inexplicably, the participation of our alumni in this vital lifeblood annual gift program has stagnated and even declined. For the 2005-2006 academic year, our participation totals did not reach our fairly modest goal, and our total dollar results fell considerably below expectations. Most disconcerting were the numbers of non-renewed gifts which totaled more than 800, and explained the absence of more than $178,000 in key athletics investments (based upon prior year giving rates). We will need to understand better this phenomenon, but even as we seek that understanding, we’re going to have to do better. If the feedback we were receiving from our student-athletes was correlated with our alumni giving results, there might be justification for the circumstances, as well as a focus for our departmental efforts. However, student-athlete feedback about the quality of their athletics experience, their treatment as a student-athlete, and even their stated willingness to contribute back so that others could have the same kind of experience, have all been remarkably strong. In fact, almost 90% of our athletes over the past four years have indicated their experience was so positive, they would be willing to contribute to support the experience of others. Generally speaking, this has been characteristic of the feedback we’ve received for many years. I’ve also heard from many alumni that they are proud of our programs, proud of our academic achievements and graduation rates as much or more as they are proud of our competitive results. Yet fewer than 20% of our sports alumni are making gifts of any amount to support Lehigh Athletics. Our internal reaction to these results is twofold: (1) we will have to do with less in the current year (less recruitment, less staffing, less student recognition) as we have less to spend; and (2) we have vowed to re-commit ourselves, to achieving the kind of fund raising results that comes closer to matching the kind of results our student-athletes and staff are achieving. We want to make a statement about our commitment to support our student-athletes and coaches. We want to challenge our alumni and friends, and we want to create excitement about Lehigh sports. And so we have adopted an annual gift goal this year of $1 million. While this is a major stretch relative to what we’ve ever done before in annual support, our research tells us we have the alumni numbers, the giving capability, and apparently, enough positive sentiment that this is an achievable goal. It is also a critical one to achieve, for the absence of success in this initiative will surely have an impact on efforts to sustain the quality of our programs. Let’s work together to make this a memorable year for Lehigh Athletics!

...I continue to find great excitement in our educational mission...

Valuing Achievement...Building Champions

The Student-Athlete The expectations of a Division I student-athlete run high at Lehigh, and the results of these great expectations continue to grow increasingly more impressive each year. Our student-athletes are excelling more than ever in the classroom, on the field, and in university leadership, each year claiming more and more prestigious awards from the department, the university, and the League. So, how do they do it? Junior center-fielder Kate Marvel, who was named the 2006 Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year, is a religion studies major who carries a 3.72 GPA and is a two-time All-Patriot League first team selection. Kate set the table for the softball team’s record-setting 43-14 campaign in 2006. Kate is also taking elementary education classes as part of the 5-year education program offered at Lehigh. Here’s how Kate does it. “Time management is key to balancing athletics and academics. I try to make the most of the free time I have by either catching up on work or just relaxing.” Lehigh’s softball team led the Patriot League Honor Roll with 15 selections, all of whom earned over a 3.2 grade point average while earning a varsity letter in her sport. Junior accounting major Whitney Schenbeck led the pack with a 4.0. As Kate put it, “It really isn’t hard if you set your priorities.” Not hard, maybe. Impressive, definitely. • The Student-Athlete Graduation Success rate (GSR) was 97%. • The following were national qualifiers for the NCAA tour nament in their respective sport: ◊ Jennie Schappert ‘07 in women’s cross country ◊ Matt Fisk ‘09 in wrestling ◊ Cory Cooperman ‘06 in wrestling ◊ Trevor Chinn ‘08 in wrestling ◊ Derek Zinck ‘06 in wrestling ◊ Troy Letters ‘06 in wrestling ◊ Travis Frick ‘05 in wrestling ◊ David Helfrich ‘07 in wrestling ◊ Matt Cassidy ‘07 in wrestling ◊ Paul Weibel ‘07 in wrestling • Julie Kafka ‘09 was named Patriot League Co-Goalkeeper of the Year and Patriot League Co-Rookie of the Year in women’s soccer.

2005-2006 Milestones and Achievements It was truly a year of overwhelming moments for Lehigh Athletics. Under the direction of head coach Sean Leary, Patriot League Coach of the Year, the Lehigh baseball team won the program’s first ever Patriot League Championship. “The emotions of the moment were overwhelming,” said Leary on the team’s victory this past spring. “Then I turned to the hill and saw all of the alumni sharing in the moment – that was definitely the highlight of my tenure at Lehigh.” The Lehigh softball team won its eighth consecutive Patriot League regular season title and third tournament crown. Following new school and Patriot League records, along with unparalleled individual success by team members, head coach Fran Troyan, pitching coach Stephanie Covelle ’02, and assistant coach Dave Bender were recognized as the 2006 Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). “Any time you are honored by your peers, it is especially meaningful,” Troyan said of the honor he and his staff received. The Wrestling Team, under the direction of EIWA Coach of the Year Greg Strobel, held off Cornell and Penn to win its fifth consecutive EIWA Tournament Championship. Lehigh qualified nine wrestlers for Nationals to be held soon after in Oklahoma City. The team ultimately placed 9th on the national level. The women’s soccer team walked away with its first ever Patriot League regular season championship and won or shared all four of the League’s player awards. For the third consecutive year, head coach Manny Oudin won the Coach of the Year award. “While he always credits his players for the turnaround of this program, coach has always been the key factor in our success,” said former captain Megan Edwards ‘06. “Coach has always known the potential of this program and all of its members and he has never expected anything less than our best.”

Welcome to the Majors! One day after returning from the NCAA regional baseball competition in June, Lehigh catcher Matt McBride was selected as the 75th pick overall by the Cleveland Indians in the 2006 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Patriot League Player of the Year and winner of the league’s Triple Crown, this All-American became the highest ever draft selection in Lehigh and Patriot League history. Within twenty-four hours of Matt being drafted, Lehigh pitcher Kyle Collina ’06 reached an agreement of his own. MVP of the Patriot League Championship in the spring and recipient of the Anderson-Hartzell award, Kyle signed a free agent contract with the Cleveland Indians.

2005-2006 Exposure & Advancement Academic achievement and athletic performance are not the only areas in which our Athletics Department shines. We also take great pride in being on the cutting edge of other advancements, including technology. The re-launch of the official athletics web site, www.lehighsports.com, was definitely a highlight of the past year. The redesigned site not only features specific content areas for each varsity sport, but also has an online merchandise store, an alumni area, links to ticket information, photo galleries, and a complete schedule of upcoming web broadcasts. Lehigh television broadcasts now reach a record number of viewers, nationally, regionally, and locally, but Lehigh Athletics has gone even further to reach out to an even broader audience by forging ahead as an industry leader in the area of web broadcasts.

Lehighsports.com

During the fall and spring, nearly 200 contests, ranging from football to wrestling to softball, are aired live on Lehighsports. com through our partnership with Yahoo! Sports. For a nominal fee of less than $5 per month, subscribers can log onto their computers from anywhere in the world and watch a variety of Lehigh athletic events, both live and on-demand. Jeff Tourial, Director of Broadcast and Multimedia for Lehigh Athletics, knows that its not just local fans checking out the streaming videos. “We reach mom and dad in California. We’ve gotten calls from parents of opponents who were excited that they had the chance to see their children play.” The venture has been so successful that we now also stream press conferences, our weekly television show Lehigh Sports Magazine, and our weekly football media luncheon. In the near future, we will also be making DVD’s of our athletics contests available for purchase.

The Lehigh Athletics Partnership

A program of fellowship, recognition and financial support, the Lehigh Athletics Partnership was founded in 1990 to supplement the Athletics budget and has since become an essential component of Lehigh’s athletic programming. The 2005-2006 year brought the challenge of meeting the high standard of success established by the Athletics Partnership. Ultimately realizing a decrease in giving, bottom line gift credits totaled $743,048 to the athletics program and fell significantly short of our projected goals and needs. While “restricted” giving to individual sports programs did meet our projections, the “unrestricted” giving, used for recruiting, staffing, and recognition programs, fell well below target. The Partnership welcomed over 330 new members, including over 100 student-athletes from the class of 2006; however, many past members decreased giving or withdrew altogether. Substantial one-time gifts made in previous years were not repeated in 2005-2006. As true Lehigh competitors, we are challenged to do better! In the upcoming year, our goal will involve “Soaring to $1 Million.” Our entire athletics community will be needed to meet and exceed the Goodman Challenge. This challenge includes securing additional endowment, increased institutional support, and $1 million in annual giving to the Athletics Partnership. We extend our most sincere gratitude to the faithful supporters who continue to give to the Athletics Partnership year after year. It is this firm and consistent generosity that inspires our athletics community to work harder each year. We are also appreciative of those new supporters who have recently begun supporting the Athletics Partnership. Finally, we are most grateful for the more significant gifts made by our most generous alumni and friends that paves the road toward fulfilling our mission each year. As we work to increase our base of participation and better educate the entire Lehigh community about the importance of the Athletics Partnership, we strive to foster and sustain personal connections with Lehigh Athletics. Our student-athletes, parents, alumni, and friends must help in order to become one team with one very important goal….$1 million.

Competition among leading institutions like Lehigh is growing each day and your dollars make it possible for our coaching staff to reach out to the best competitors in the nation. Lehigh’s current studentathletes are representative of 39 states in the nation, along with three foreign countries. You have read about the successes that our program experienced last year, on and off the field, and we are sure that you want to help this and future years reach even higher.

“It’s important for us to have a national recruiting base…” – Coach Manny Oudin Lehigh’s women’s soccer team, last year’s Patriot League Co-Champions who set the school record with 14 wins (13 shut-outs), welcomed 8 new student-athletes representing every region of the US.

Please know that your support of the Athletics Partnership funds the recruitment of top level student-athletes that will carry on Lehigh’s tradition of excellence.
