Today, thanks to the hard work, dedication and generosity both in time and money of the people who voluntarily keep the oldest football club in Barking and Dagenham going we are able to continue in our 140th season, our 3rd century and our 55th season in the Isthmian League. We are very pleased to welcome for a second time the players, supporters and officials of Cheshunt FC and of course our own supporters, any uncommitted visitors and those most important people the referee and assistants, without whom we would have no game. NEWS ABOUT THE BLUES EDDIE ALLSOPP While training with Charlton Eddie has unfortunately suffered a serious knee injury which has cut short his time with us. Eddie scored 6 goals in 11 appearances and we wish him the best with his recovery.
BARKING FC 0It was hardly goals galore in a game that will not live long in the memory of anyone at Mayesbrook Park as Barking and Bedfont Sports crawled to their second goalless draw of the season. After 25 minutes after being the marginally better side Bedfont had the first chance of note as Maxwell Oldham cut in from the right wing but his shot flashed wide of the goal. Bedfont continued to look the more dangerous going forward with home stopper Montel Joseph tipping over a long range shot from former blue Izzy Bademosi and Barking defending a succession of corners to end the first half on parity. Barking started the second half brighter and good work by Dumebi GBDumaka and Johnny Ashman saw the ball fall to Junior Dadson close to the six yard box but his effort cleared the crossbar. Dumaka did similar minutes later from the edge of the box after good work from Dimitrios Kyriatzis between the sticks from Bedfont and then smothered an attempt from Michael Dixon. Bedfont had a somewhat muted penalty appeal after 65 minutes and forced Joseph into a good save with 15 to go as he pushed a curling effort around the post. There were half chances for both sides in the final ten minutes but neither side troubled either keeper any further as two of the form sides in the league settled for a point each.

In July 1946, at a public meeting in the Co-op Hall in Waltham Cross, a group of local businessmen decided to resurrect the club, using local junior side Crossbrook Sports as the basis for the new team, retaining their amber and black colours and with Roy Bailey as their manager. Cheshunt then won the division one title in 1947/48 and again in 1948/49 season and reached the Herts Senior Cup final for the first time. The 1949/50 season saw us in the London League Premier division and playing at our newly opened Cheshunt Stadium on Theobalds Lane. We won the championship – beating Tilbury on the last day of the season to clinch the title from them – and reached the 3rd round of the Amateur Cup, defeating holders Bromley in front of 5,000 spectators (still the ground record) along the way. Drainage problems forced the club to abandon Cheshunt Stadium and move to a new ground on Brookfield Lane. We returned to ‘The Stadium’ (as it is often referred to) in 1952/53 but a poor playing surface meant a return to Brookfield Lane, this time as the tenants of Tottenham Hotspur, as Spurs were now using it as their training ground. At the end of the 1957/58 season Cheshunt were asked to leave and so returned to Cheshunt Stadium where we have played to this present day. Apart from moving grounds, Cheshunt also moved around various leagues. We were members of the Delphian League from 1951/52 and 1954/55, re-joined the London League between 1955/56 and 1958/59 and then left to become founder members of the Aetolian League between 1959/60 and 1961/2… all without achieving any notable success. In 1957/58 our team reached the FA Cup 4th qualifying round for the first time. It’s an achievement the club has matched three times since, but never bettered. Cheshunt joined the Spartan League for the 1962/63 season and won the title at the first attempt. The following season the team won the Spartan League Cup. For the 1964/65 season, Cheshunt joined the Athenian League, playing in division two. The division one title was won in 1967/68, beating Wembley in another head-to-head championship decider. Cheshunt’s time in the Premier Division saw the Club’s most successful period since the 1940s. We won the Mithras Cup in 1969/70, the London Charity Cup in 1973/74, the Athenian League Cup and East Anglian Cup in 1974/75 and the Athenian League Cup again in 1975/76. We also reached four Herts Senior Cup finals, two Mithras Cup finals as well as another East Anglian Cup and Herts Charity Cup finals. Cheshunt joined the Isthmian League Division Two in 1977/78. We found little success until the 1981/82 season, when we finished runners-up to Worthing and were promoted to division one. We also reached the last eight of the FA Vase, going out to Wearside Club Blue Star in the quarter-final, Cheshunt’s best performance in any national competition. Cheshunt were relegated from division one at the end of 1983/84 season. In 1986/87 Cheshunt were relegated into the Spartan League and spent the next six seasons in a state of persistent frustration, unable to achieve the consistency needed for promotion. We did, however, pick up the Herts Centenary Trophy in 1991/92 and finally finished in a top three place in 1992/93, along with the Spartan League Cup, which was a good enough performance to go back up into the Isthmian League. Cheshunt re-joined division three of the Isthmian League for the 1993/94 season and achieved promotion to division two at the first attempt. The club was relegated to division three in 1997/98 but bounced back immediately the following season. We consolidated with mid-table positions until being effectively relegated to the new division two at the end of the 2001/02 season due to League restructuring and ground improvements not meeting League deadlines. In season 2002/03, Cheshunt won the division two title (our first league title for 27 years), reached three cup finals and also achieved the necessary ground-grading to play at a higher level. Success continued in the 2003/04 season, finishing third in division one north and reaching the final of the Herts Charity Cup. With the FA restructuring of the non-league pyramid taking effect for the following season, Cheshunt were promoted to the Isthmian Premier division for 2004/05. We found ourselves relegated on the final day of the season by the narrowest of margins (identical points and goal difference with Wealdstone meant that they stayed above Cheshunt by virtue of having scored two more goals), only to then find we were saved due to the disbandment of Hornchurch that summer. However, the Ambers were moved across into the Southern League, where we spent a memorable 2005/06 season (finishing two places above the relegation zone) and lifting the Herts Charity Cup for the first time in the club’s history 2007/08 saw the club break plenty of records for all the wrong reasons. Five managers took up residence in the hot-seat: Tom Loizou (sacked in November), Paul McGiven (resigned in December), Justin Moseley (caretaker), Martin Grainger (resigned after 1 game in charge) and finally Gordon Boateng. Months of turmoil saw most of the senior players leave for pastures greener. Relegation was all but assured by the time Boateng took charge of the team and the inevitable became a certainty at Easter when a 2-1 defeat at Banbury Utd sealed our fate. In 2011 Cheshunt Sports & Leisure Ltd took over the Club with Dean Williamson installed as Chairman. Ensuring stability was the first priority along with investment in the facilities to build a solid foundation from which the club could grow. In 2013, the club were granted planning permission to overhaul 16 acres of land to provide high quality playing surfaces, install a sustainable irrigation system and a full size floodlit artificial pitch. The permission gained national coverage in the BBC2 documentary “Permission Impossible.” - 10 -
OUR LAST VICTORY V
-4 BARKING FC
Barking powered past struggling Cheshunt as goals for Hughes-Mason, Gilchrist, Shaban and Seymour gave Barking a 4-0 win at Cheshunt. The Blues are now on a 6 game unbeaten run in Bostik North after a shaky start to the season. Cheshunt came close to taking the lead after just 5 minutes as the Blues lost the ball in their own box with the ball falling to a striker who skied the ball over Olajide’s goal. Barking thought they had taken the lead after 13 minutes as Kiernan Hughes-Mason poked home but he had already been flagged offside. Barking went close again 5 minutes later as Alan Taylor’s volley from 30 yards smacked the crossbar after a Cheshunt defender had knocked down a long ball. Barking had to be on their toes however as Akwasi Marfo cleared a header off the line after 23 minutes. Taylor went close again 2 minutes later but his time he saw his curling effort palmed away by Joseph in the Cheshunt goal. The chances stopped flowing but Barking grabbed the lead before half-time as a chipped corner by Abs Seymour to the near post found an unmarked Kiernan Hughes-Mason who glanced the ball into the bottom right corner of the net for 1-0 to Barking. Hughes-Mason saw his header saved after 49 minutes but he turned provider minutes later as he latched onto Olajide’s long goal kick before cutting back from the left wing of the box and sliding the ball across to Dan Gilchrist who had time to set himself before driving the ball home to double Barking’s lead. Jason Hallett thought he had a way back into the game for Cheshunt 5 minutes later but his effort was disallowed for offside. The game slowed before coming alive in the final 5 minutes – Billy Jones saw his side foot effort curl just wide before Joseph was on hand to tip over Sam Shaban’s effort. The resultant corner saw only Shaban and Knight in the box but Seymour was able to float the ball to Shaban who beat his man to rise up and head the ball in to give Barking their third goal. After setting up two goals it was time for Seymour to get involved himself as Barking pressure forced Cheshunt into mistakes – the ball ended up with Jones on the right wing – he played the ball back to Ben O’Brien who played it inside to Abs Seymour – he put the ball on his left foot before curling the ball around the dive of Joseph and into the bottom corner of the net to add some final gloss to the scoreline as Barking ran out 4-0 winners.

OUR LAST VELOCITY TROPHY TIE: -0 ROMFORD (ROMFORD WIN 4-3 ON PENALTIES) 27 November 2019 – Report by Terry Gilbert
This was our final Velocity group game which in an effort to get it played was switched to Mayesbrook Park, and prior to kick off after much head scratching and debate it was decided that for our double figure goal difference to reduced sufficiently in Romford’s favour we needed to lose by six clear goals. As it transpired despite a lot of huff and puff and some excellent defending from both sides meant neither team claimed the three points and we lost the additional point penalty shootout 4-3 with former Blue Theo Ola scoring the decisive penalty and both Nana BoakyeYiadom and Donnell Anderson having their spot kicks saved. We were without the ineligible Jordan Peart and both Abs Seymour and Sam Owusu were suspended after picking up bookings in the Aveley game. Newcomer Kristof Matyas made his debut, initially at centre half as Joe Bruce was running late and in total there were five changes to Saturday’s starting eleven. The match was played on a heavy playing surface that had taken a battering from the recent rainfall but the game went from end to end and it was surprising there were no goals. Barking’s first effort of note took until the fourteenth minute when Steven Sardinha set Junior Dadson away and his cross found Emmanuel Ighorae but his shot was wide. A blocked Ricky Tarbard cross fell to Max Bradford putting in another good performance decided to run and run across the box but his shot was wide. At the other end only an excellent interception by Jack Hayes on 32 prevented a Romford attacker from a clear run on goal. As the minutes ticked down Sherri Artmeladze set Nana Boakye-Yiadom free but only a great tackle by Joshua Exley Banks stopped him. On the stroke of half time an Ighorae run ended with a shot that was saved by Manny Agboola in the Romford goal. Shortly afterwards the referee’s whistle meant we had safely made it to the halfway mark. The opening passages of play after the break were typified by a number of misplaced passes from both sides and on 53 a good move ended with a powerful Sardinha shot which was on target but was well saved by Agboola. Just after the hour Adam Morgan had the first of two chances to put Romford in front but his effort was wide and on 74, he appeared to have a better chance but again fired wide - the two efforts were sandwiched between one from Barking when Matyas found Ighorae but he fired over. Eleven minutes from time BoakyeYiadom was through on goal but Agboola denied him and then on 85 he was through again but this time thwarted by an excellent challenge from Tambeson Eyong. Barking made a couple of late substitutions bringing on Eddie Allsopp and Johnny Ashman - no doubt with one eye on the spot kick decider for an extra point. For the record Romford went first and the sequence went: Adam Morgan (scored), Joe Bruce (scored), Adam Cunnington (scored), Rob Brown (scored), Dominic McHale (scored), Eddie Allsopp (scored), Freddy Moncur (missed - shot over bar), Nana Boakye-Yiadom (missed - keeper saved), Theo Ola (scored), Donnell Anderson (missed - keeper saved)
