BERMUDA CAPTIVE CONFERENCE 2018
Leading Global Risk Innovation
WELCOME
Mike Parrish Chairman
This is the 14th year of an industry event that reflects the global importance of our island’s captive insurance industry. Bermuda was the birthplace of captives back in the 1960s, laying a firm foundation for our jurisdiction’s world-respected insurance and reinsurance hub. Today, captives are even more relevant as a solid risk-management strategy in a corporate landscape characterised by change and uncertainty. Our 2018 event offers some changes of its own—updates we hope attendees will find useful and enjoyable. We’ve tightened the agenda into three days instead of four to better suit your busy schedules. Our website and brand have received a refresh. We’ve now got an app that will let delegates connect via instant messaging. New social events will provide authentic Bermuda experiences beyond the conference. And we’ve moved Wednesday’s gala dinner to a new venue, the historic Commissioner’s House at the Royal Naval Dockyard. This year’s theme is Diversity, and our agenda explores its various facets in an industry context. We’ll hear from female captive leaders, as well as millennials, and look at the increasing diversity of risk, products and talent, including fast-morphing spheres like cyber-risk, blockchain and climate change.

We’re delighted to welcome two spotlight speakers, too—human-rights visionary Derreck Kayongo and insurance industry leader Jonathan Reiss, who, incidentally, is the son of our industry’s founding father for whom our annual Lifetime Achievement Award is named. This year, we honour former Johnson & Higgins director and president Brian Hall with the Fred Reiss Award for his lasting legacy in the captive world, and the insurance industry in general. Community outreach is an important part of this year’s conference. We’re working with the Bermuda Insurance Institute to connect students to industry mentors. For the first time, we’ve also partnered with a Bermuda-registered charity so we can give back. Friends of Hospice, which runs Agape House, the island’s only respite-care facility, is our 2018 beneficiary, and we’ll highlight its important work over the next few days. This is my inaugural year chairing the conference, and I’ve appreciated the strong support of our sponsors, members of the Bermuda Captive Owners Association (BCOA), and all my colleagues on our planning committees—whose combined efforts ensure this event’s success. We look forward to welcoming back past attendees, meeting firsttimers, and making sure the Bermuda market remains a place you keep returning to.

President, Bermuda Insurance Management Association (BIMA)
As the new President of the Bermuda Insurance Management Association (BIMA), I am excited to welcome you to the 14th Bermuda Captive Conference. I speak for all of us at BIMA when I say how pleased we are to have you here in Bermuda to learn, participate, share and experience all Bermuda and the 2018 Conference have to offer. The conference continues to go from strength to strength and this would not be possible without your support. We’re also grateful for the support of our sponsors and for the commitment of time and effort from our volunteers on the Conference Committee, led by new Bermuda Captive Conference Chair, Michael Parrish, and for the continued support from members of the Bermuda Captive Owners Association (BCOA). Diversity – of risk, talent and products – is the theme of this year’s conference. It’s important to recognise the impact of diversity within the industry and you’ll note diversity has been woven through the conference’s topical agenda. All activities on the agenda will connect you

with Bermuda’s captive owners, business leaders, risk managers, regulators and insurance executives, ensuring valuable networking and business connection opportunities. Everyone will agree it has been, and continues to be an exciting and challenging time for the captive insurance industry overall, no more so than in Bermuda, and we will all have to continue to grow and adapt to events and evolving legislation, both at home and globally, to ensure our clients’ needs are met. We should all be very proud of where we are today, and be prepared to continue the hard work we know will be required for continued success. BIMA will continue to work with government, the Bermuda Monetary Authority, the BCOA, the Bermuda Business Development Agency (BDA) and a wide range of industry bodies both in Bermuda and abroad to ensure a strong future for the Bermuda captive insurance industry. Welcome to Bermuda and welcome to the 2018 Bermuda Captive Conference. It is going to be a great one!

Brian R Hall, OBE
2018 FRED REISS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Bermudian Brian R Hall, OBE, a former director and president of Johnson & Higgins credited with taking the island's captive insurance industry to global relevance, will receive the third Fred Reiss Lifetime Achievement Award. A graduate of Saltus Grammar School, Hall served as chair of the Bermuda College and the Insurance Advisory Committee (IAC), as well as founder and trustee advisor of the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies (BFIS). He was also founding president of the Bermuda Insurance Management Association (BIMA) during a notable insurance career spanning over four decades on the island, including five years spent working directly with Reiss. Born in 1941 in Denton, a small town near Manchester, UK, Hall moved to Bermuda in 1958 to join his parents and got a job at age 17 working for a nascent American International Group (AIG). In 1964, he was hired by Reiss as a captive account manager for International Risk Management, Reiss's company where Hall spent five years. He then launched his own firm, Inter-Ocean Management, that began running captive operations for global insurance brokerage Johnson & Higgins, for which Hall was named CEO and president in 1979, and later chair. J&H Global Captive Management grew
to 17 offices and 400 employees worldwide, before merging with Marsh & McLennan in 1997. Importantly, Hall helped develop the industry's future through educational initiatives. Among his many roles and achievements, he founded BFIS in 1996 and became Chairman Emeritus of the non-profit, which provides opportunities for Bermudian students to gain necessary education and training to enter the insurance sector. He led the Board of Governors as chair of the Bermuda College and was nominated by Bermuda's government to receive an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the Queen in 1998, for his services to the insurance industry. Hall served as a board member for Renaissance Reinsurance and helped create BIMA, today the captive sector's primary industry organisation, an association of professional insurance managers and captive service providers that works to protect the interests of members and clients. In 2001, Hall received a lifetime achievement award from the Bermuda Insurance Institute (BII). Hall remains professionally connected to Bermuda through partnership with Oyster Consulting Bermuda, a company that delivers compliance and other services to financial industry clients.
