2019 ANNUAL REPORT

If one thing is clear, it is that 2019 was absolutely memorable. The year consisted of incredible highs, significant adversity and everything in between. As I look back and reflect upon this year, it will stand out over the course of time, no question about it. Our year began with record fundraising from our Reach for the Stars event, in which we topped the $100,000 plateau for the first time. What an incredible high! Just weeks later, our Club, and other parts of our great city, were decimated by flood waters. It forced a seven-week closure of the Johnsonville Club that saw our Club rehabbed, our members displaced and our resiliency tested. From that low, we emerged a galvanized, inspired and stronger organization, ready to return to doing everything possible to meet the needs of our children and families. After another strong summer program, we saw the creation of a brand new program in partnership with Fond du Lac High School and other Clubs throughout the state. The Be Great, Graduate program, led by Demond Mettlach, began our concerted effort to make sure that high school students who need us most have the support they need to perform to the best of their ability, and ultimately graduate. Graduation will signify not the end, but the beginning of their journey to lead a successful and productive life! By the end of 2019, we had experienced near-record overall program participation, record high teen program participation, a long-term investment fund that climbed over the one million dollar mark and a 10% budget surplus. Even with the adversity caused by the water damage, we rose to the challenge. Our Board of Directors, Club staff, members and families remained vigilant, and I am incredibly thankful to be a part of this organization. Thank you all for another great year making a difference for children in Fond du Lac! Sincerely,

DAN HEBEL / CEO / Boys & Girls Club of Fond du Lac

“From our mission moments to adjournment our Board remains lead by the purpose of our movement and the inspiration that comes from the infinite potential of our Club members. Our board recognizes the opportunity we have at our fingertips to positively impact our Club and community as a whole. I am grateful to have lead such an incredible Board as President this past year.” - ASSISTANT CHIEF OF POLICE AARON GOLDSTEIN / Board President

OUR MISSION IS TO EMPOWER ALL YOUNG PEOPLE TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL AS PRODUCTIVE, CARING, RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS THROUGH ACADEMIC, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT.

FLOOD RECOVERY SUPPORT & THANK YOU TOUR On March 14, 2019, the flooding that took place in Fond du Lac affected our Johnsonville Club to a significant degree. Water damaged flooring, drywall and equipment throughout the lower level of the Boys & Girls Club and YMCA. In the weeks that followed, our organizations worked diligently to clean, dry, sanitize and rehab the building back into a condition to provide service to our members. Thanks to incredible support and services from Service Master and CD Smith Construction, we avoided a worst case scenario and greatly shortened the time frame for program transition. We partnered with Riverside Elementary and Sabish Middle School to continue to serve Johnsonville Club members while the building was being rehabbed. With the generous compassion and support of many, we were able to reopen our doors on April 29. To celebrate this monumental day, community leaders representing Envision Greater Fond du Lac joined Board

members and staff leadership from the Boys & Girls Club and YMCA in a symbolic ribbon cutting in the Boys & Girls Club Teen Center. It was a great start to an exciting day that saw children and teens return to regular programming at the Johnsonville for the first time in nearly seven weeks. In addition, our Club’s leadership team, along with some team members from the Fond du Lac Family YMCA, joined forces to venture out on a little “Thank You Tour” in November to further express our gratitude to a few special people/businesses who supported and helped us overcome all the water damage we fell victim to in mid-March. Huge thanks again to W.J. Leasa Electric, Hierl Insurance, Inc., C.D. Smith Construction, Jack Twohig’s Carpet One and Ahern-Gross Plumbing for being incredibly caring partners in our community! And thank you to the Fond du Lac community as a whole for all of the support while we went through this transition. We could not have done it without you!

We avoided a worst case scenario and greatly shortened the time frame for program transition.

OUR VISION IS TO BE A PLACE WHERE EACH CHILD AND YOUNG ADULT IN OUR COMMUNITY GROWS TO LIVE A HEALTHY AND PRODUCTIVE LIFE.

been motivated to be an outlet of positive support for others. I will put their needs in front of my own so they feel supported and I feel that having a positive support system today is very important.

YOUTH OF THE YEAR “The Youth of the Year program is our signature effort to foster a new generation of leaders, offering leadership and character building opportunities for Boys & Girls Club members. The youth recognized with this elite honor are those that have continued to model the Club values and member expectations to their highest potential. Serving as ambassadors of our Boys & Girls Club, these youth are a direct representation of our Club who contribute greatly to the positive after school environment for which we strive to maintain.” - DILLON WIESE / Director of Teen Services, Boys & Girls Club of Fond du Lac

“Club is like my second family and has meant so much to me.” PAULINA LOPEZ / 2019 Youth of the Year “ A leader is someone who motivates and inspires people to engage in their vision of the future. A leader is someone that is inclusive, compassionate, and accountable. I would describe myself as a leader. The skills and strengths I possess have helped me grow and have driven me to be the person I am today. I speak fluently in two languages. Spanish is my first language, but I have been learning and speaking English since I was 4 years old. My ability to be bilingual has been useful in school, at home, and at the Boys & Girls Club. People have not only relied on me because of being bilingual. They also rely on me because of how hardworking I am. At Club, I am someone staff can count on for help with events and volunteer opportunities. I love sharing my passion to make an impact on other people. I have been the leader of our Keystone Club and have done many impactful service activities. One activity that has meant a lot to me was our Lighting for Literacy project. We made solar panel lights for people in other countries so they could have light at night. A large part of the reason helping others and doing service activities has been so easy for me is because I am very outgoing. Being outgoing is one of my biggest strengths and it has driven my entire personality and many of my leadership qualities. I am an accepting and inclusive person to other people and I’ve always

I have had times where the daily struggles of being a youth in America have been overwhelming. I have faced challenges related to school, feeling accepted socially and in my own personal life. Having an outlet of positive support in a time where I needed help was important. The worst of this came from the start of 8th grade up until becoming a freshman. I was in a place where I felt alone and like people wouldn’t understand what I was going through. During this time I began to self-harm. The first time opening up about this to one of my support systems resulted in a negative experience for me. The reactions from that support system made me feel like I was a disappointment. I felt more upset about myself and I didn’t want to open up to anyone else. It took time, but soon I began to seek other outlets of positive support. Running, sports and programs like Girls on the Run have taught me a lot about believing in myself, how to live healthy and be more comfortable in my own shoes. My Boys & Girls Club helped me by offering many opportunities to make new friends and attend programs to help me learn more about who I am. I learned how to be more confident in myself and how to care greatly for other people because of the staff at the Boys & Girls Club. I found the support I needed from these new interests, hobbies, and my Club. I feel that America’s youth face many struggles, like I have. I want to help inform youth of the support they can receive for mental health. To help with sharing and creating programs to give youth the positive support system they need. I want to lead and inspire America’s youth to engage in my vision of the future. I want to keep making a difference in people’s lives which is why I plan to attend college to further my education and become a social worker. I am passionate about mental health, family, my community, equality, and my Boys & Girls Club. Club is like my second family and has meant so much to me. I would choose going there over doing anything else. I am proud to represent the Boys & Girls Club of Fond du Lac as their Youth of the Year.

D.C. TRIP

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

For the second consecutive year, a group of our teens had the tremendous opportunity to go on an all-expense paid trip to our nation’s capital, sponsored by Herb Kohl Philanthropies. The teens were able to visit many places such as the Arlington National Cemetery, The World War II Memorial, Abraham Lincoln monument, and Martin Luther King Jr. memorial. The trip consisted of three full days of touring from sunrise to sundown. What a fantastic way for our teen members to learn about our country and its history. They had a great time and are so grateful to have been part of this trip!

GUITAR LESSONS Levi Harris is a Club Alumnus who has been volunteering at the Club for the past nine summers, offering free guitar lessons to our members. He remembers attending Club at the old Hamilton School location when he was elementary age. He really enjoyed getting involved in all the camps that Club offered, being able to attend baseball games and go on a variety of other fun field trips. Levi has been teaching guitar for about 14 years as a private instructor and is a full time employee of Mike’s Music. He recognizes that many families simply cannot afford to pay for private music lessons, so volunteering his time at the Club allows him to teach guitar to youth who otherwise may never have that opportunity. Levi is an incredible asset to our mission and vision, and we greatly appreciate his time and talent!

The Torch Club kids played bingo with residents at St. Claire’s assisted living once a month, rang bells for Salvation Army decorated placemats for nursing homes and coffee sleeves for Annie’s Fountain City Café, gave Christmas cards to servicemen and women, made ornaments for the Children’s Museum Christmas trees, prepared a meal for the warming shelter, read to resident at the Meadows, folded towels for the YMCA, made tie blankets, picked up garbage around the city and held several small fundraisers at the Club, donating the money back to another charity in our community. In addition, they ran a “Love Thy Neighbor” program during the summer program in which they made and handed out “positive pops” at Relay for Life, planted flowers for a local nursing home and made dog treats for the Humane Society.

PIER SUPPER PROGRAM Our Pier Clubhouse was finally able to start their supper program this fall! We all know how much kids love food and also how essential healthy and balanced meals are for their growth and development. In the past, we were only able to serve snacks at our Pier location, so we are grateful for this opportunity in partnership with Aramark and the Fond du Lac School District. What a great way to add to our after school program by feeding our Club members a full meal each night!

VOLLEYBALL FOR TEENS Thanks to our incredible partnership with Buffalo Wild Wings here in Fond du Lac, we received an All-Stars grant giving us the opportunity to run a volleyball program for our teens. We purchased uniforms and equipment with the funds and held practices three days per week along with playing games every Friday. Our team even traveled to the Boys & Girls Club of the Fox Valley in Appleton to play against their volleyball team. It was a great experience for all who participated! We’re excited to see how this program progresses as our teens continue to learn the fundamentals of this sport and develop their skills!

KEYSTONE & TORCH CLUBS Our Keystone (teens) and Torch (elementary youth) Clubs focus on giving back to the community through various volunteer efforts year round. The Keystone Club kids volunteered at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s event by welcoming and cheering on those who participated. They also volunteered at ASTOP’s Take Back the Fright Zombie 5K, Lemonade Day in partnership with Torch Club kids and have helped out at each of the seven Family Strengthening events the Boys & Girls Club and YMCA hold together throughout the year.

SPECIAL EVENT SUCCESS

11TH ANNUAL REACH FOR THE STARS DINNER & AUCTION

Presented by Society Insurance and coupled with other numerous sponsorships from local businesses, our 6th annual Greatest Showman themed team spelling bee event raised a record-breaking $26,800 to directly support the Club’s academic programs. 2019 Champions were Paul Simon (Wabash National), Kamon Parker-Hersey (Riverside Elementary) and Carley Schmitz (STEM Institute).

Reach for the Stars raised over $105,000 in support of the Club’s 10 week summer programs. Presented by Grande Cheese with a focus on the organization’s newly formed Club Values, this event marked the largest single fundraiser in the history of the organization.

“President Franklin Delano Roosevelt once said, ‘We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.’ Choosing to volunteer our time was not a difficult one for my wife Lori and I as we learned how the Boys & Girls Club impacts the Fond du Lac community. Volunteering with special events, whether it is sitting on a planning committee or being involved the day of the event, affords us the opportunity to help make a difference in the lives of youth and families. Get connected, get engaged and help build our youth for the future.” - DAVID THIEL / Senior Branch Manager, Associated Bank BGC Board Member and Special Events Committee Member
