A - Aunt Baba Aunt Baba is Adeline’s mother’ s friend. She is the only one who actually took care of Adeline after Adeline’s mother passed. She acts like a mother to Adeline instead of Adeline’s Step mother. She one of the few that care about Adeline.

B - Bob Bob Mah is Adeline Yen Mah’s Chinese American husband. He is also Adeline second husband. At the beginning Adeline name was Adeline Yen but after getting marry she became Adeline Yen Mah.

C - Class President Adeline was appointed as a class president by her class back in her old school. This was important because it led into chain reaction of Adeline being sent into a boarding school.

D - Death There are many deaths of the family members that happened in the story, most of the deaths were caused by illness or is unknown. One of the deaths that were mostly impacted to the family was Adeline’s mother who came down with a high fever three days after Adeline was born, ever since the incident happened Adeline’s siblings accused her as bad luck and the cause of their mother’s death.

E - England Adeline wanted to go to England with her third brother. She wanted to go and study to be an author but her father said that being an author won’t make much and that he would let her go if she went to study medicine to be a doctor. Adeline wanted to get out of Hong Kong because of the life she had. She thinks that going to England would be like going to heaven.

F - Friends Adeline’s friends are the ones who helped her to become successful, since ⅚ of her siblings hate her and so does her parents. Her friends are the ones that support her and they treat her better than her own family.

G - Grandparents Adeline’s Grandparent were one of the many people that were nice to Adeline. Adeline’s grandfather was the only one other than Aunt Baba that would help Adeline through her life. If Aunt Baba wasn’t with her then her grandfather would be there instead.

H - Hong Kong Adeline went with Niang’s brother’s family to go to a boarding school in Hong Kong.

I - Inequality Niang’s real children would get anything they want and Niang won’t argue with them. With the step-children Niang gives them less stuff than her own children. But with Adeline she get treated even worse than the other step-children.

J - Jun-Ling Jun-Ling is the Chinese name of Adeline Yen Mah. Everyone in Adeline family has a English and a Chinese name. Chinese Cinderella is her life story.

K - Kindness There was barely any kindness that was shown to Adeline. The only kindness she got was from her grandparents, Aunt Baba, Victor, sometimes her big brother, and her friends. They were the only ones that was nice to her.

L - Letter There were many thing with the letter. When Adeline had to leave Shanghai to go to St Joseph Boarding school, Aunt Baba and Adeline promise that they would write to each other. But no letters came for Adeline. The reason why Adeline never receives any letters was because of Niang. The last chapter is a letter that Aunt Baba wrote for Adeline.

M - Mother Adeline’s mother died because of a high fever. Adeline’s sibling hated her because they think that she was the cause of their mother’s death. They think that Adeline is a curse.

N - Niang Niang is Adeline’s stepMother. She is a Strict woman who only cares about her side of the family. After the mother died the father remarried to Niang, who is a horrible step-mother. Niang is the one that was in control after Adeline’s grandmother’s death.

O -Opium War The first Opium War happened because of conflict between China and Britain. In page 144 Victor explained how China lost the war and Hong Kong became a British colony.

P - PLT PLT short for Precious- LittleTreasure, a duckling which was Adeline’s pet. Adeline’s dad wanted to test out Jackie’s obedience and he needs a duck volunteer, Adeline’s brother picked her duck and Jackie killed PLT leaving Adeline with its dead body.

Q - Quelled Adeline was living through the history of the quelled wars over different Chinese states. After the Opium War, Britain took over Hong Kong and Kowloon.

R - Reunion Adeline went with her siblings and grandfather to go with her father to Shanghai. Adeline had a family reunion with the father and new step-mother.

S - Siblings Between the 5 siblings, Adeline was the one that was treated the worse. Adeline’s other siblings blame her for the death of their mother and that they blame her for being bad luck. The sibling that treated Adeline the worse was Lydia the eldest sister.

T - Tianjin In the beginning of the story, Adeline Yen Mah had gone to kindergarten in Tianjin. Tianjin was also the place that she was at when she was sent to boarding school later on.

U - Unwanted After the mother’s death it made most siblings despise Adeline. Deeper into the book Adeline realized that she was an unwanted child. There were many parts that would show that she was unwanted, like when no one worried about her and how no one cared if she was gone.

V -Victor Victor was the kind uncle that helped Adeline. Victor was the one that stayed behind with Adeline when the family left somewhere. He cared about Adeline’s well being and that he was very cheerful. He was the complete opposite of her brothers.

W - Wu Chen- Mei Wu Chen-Mei was Adeline best friend when she was in Shanghai. After Adeline won class president, Wu Chen-Mei wanted to throw a Surprise celebration party, because of the surprise party Adeline was later sent to a Boarding School in Tianjin (St. Joseph’s).

X- Xian (Ye Xian) Ye Xian was the original Chinese Cinderella. Told to her by Aunt baba when she was 14. The story is very similar to Adeline’s story. And it happened long before during the Tang- Dynasty.

Y - Yen Yen is the surname of Adeline’s father. Adeline and her sibling inherited his surname. Chinese surname goes in front of their actual names. The Father does nothing while Niang took control and abused Adeline.

Z - Zhong Guo Zhong Guo is another name for China which was given in the nineteenth century when the country looked inward and considered itself as the central country.
