A Letter to the Class of 2020
The year 2020 has certainly been one of a kind. A global pandemic, a national reckoning with systemic racial injustice, and presidential election results that reveal deep cleavages in our society are but three of the many remembrances we will all carry once the calendar turns. While public health requirements mean we can’t meet together, the faculty and staff of SUNY Old Westbury could not allow this academic year to go by without celebrating you and your achievements. So, the commencement of the Class of 2020 from students to graduates is yet another first we are experiencing together in a now virtual environment. Graduates, you have excelled inside and outside of the classroom as student leaders, scholar athletes, community volunteers, future educators, talented artists, budding scientists, and everything in-between. In so doing, you have become exemplars of all that SUNY Old Westbury seeks to achieve. I know the faculty and staff of this institution are gratified to have been a part of your college journey. All on this campus are confident your education cultivated critical thinking, empathy, creativity and intercultural understanding within you and your classmates. These are the cornerstones for a fruitful, prosperous, and meaningful life. What you’ve experienced is critical not just to your next challenge in life, but also in tackling the exciting future opportunities none of us can even predict. Academic Regalia The robes, hoods and hats worn on formal occasions by members of the academic community are called academic regalia and date back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in Europe. Originally, all members of a university were clerics, who often wore long robes and hoods to protect themselves from the cold in the drafty rooms and corridors of the unheated stone buildings in which they lived and worked. Academic dress evolved slowly in Europe, beginning simply with black robes and hoods. As faculties, degrees and institutions proliferated, however, colors were adopted that distinguished their members. Gowns, hoods, hats and tassels became identifying features and now also provide a note of colorful pageantry that enlivens solemn academic ceremonies. Today’s academic attire in the United States grew out of the British practice, which varied by institution. In May 1895, a group of college faculty met at Columbia University to develop a uniform scheme of academic dress that could be used by all institutions of higher education in this country. The system they adopted was modified by committees of
the American Council on Education in 1932 and 1959, resulting in the attire we see today. The system provides for three types of gowns, for bachelor, master and doctoral degrees. The bachelor’s degree candidates wear gowns that are closed in front, usually long, with pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is the same shape, but with long, square sleeves. The doctoral robes are faced down the front and around the neck with velvet, and three horizontal velvet bars trim each sleeve. The velvet may be black or a color identifying the discipline in which the degree was earned. Hoods are lined in a color identifying the institution that granted the degree. Masters’ hoods are 42 inches long, while doctoral hoods are 48 inches long. The bindings of the hoods are velvet in a color representing the wearer’s discipline. The width of the binding also indicates master or doctorate levels, with the widest border on the doctoral hoods. The colors of the disciplines shown on the hood bindings are uniform in this country, with white representing arts, letters and humanities; pink, music; light blue, education; dark blue, philosophy; and so on.

Hats for bachelors and masters are usually black mortarboards; doctors may wear these or velvet beret style hats. The tassel may be black or a color representing the discipline or institution. It has become the custom for degree candidates to wear tassels on the right side of their hats and move them to the left when their degrees have been conferred.
