HATID SAYA SA BARANGAY A CORPES Final Project JULY 27, 2019

Written by: Gliyam Cundangan•

PREPARATION Last July 27, 2019 we had an event prepared for children called Hatid Saya sa Barangay. It was a requirement for CORPRES that didn’t feel much like a requirement to me. As a preschool teacher, to spend some time with the children, it was just like a normal school day for me.   The whole preparation was a bit of a breeze because most of us chose committees that we were well familiar with. I chose Finance because it’s one of the things I’m good at as a business management student and as a working lady.   During the day itself, fortunately for us, it wasn’t that hard to manage the children. Everything went well and surprisingly on time. There were bits and pieces of the schedule that we had a problem with but we were still able to troubleshoot in a nick of time.

By the time they arrived, we were all so ready, or so we thought. The organizers were having a problem with the kids standing up and leaving their places when they were supposed to just sit where they were told to sit. For security purposes, each table was even assigned an organizer to keep an eye on them. Personally, it was funny to me how my fellow classmates were low-key freaking out because they thought the kids were already being rowdy when in reality, these kids were just being kids. It was easier for me to handle because I am a preschool teacher and the behavior they were exhibiting was normal.   To lessen the rowdiness and to keep them occupied before we started the program, we held a small talent showcase moment where we pick random kids to sing or dance. At first, we thought it would take a short time only, assuming that kids would probably be shy at first. But, we weren’t prepared to see these children so full of talent. Some of them sang, some even rapped and beatboxed, and some danced.

TALENT SHOW

We had a movie-viewing and snacks prepared for them. After that, we started with painting used plastic gallons of water to be reused as trashcans because we wanted to show the importance of environmental awareness and preservation. We wanted to make sure that at the end of the day, we were able to let the children see that as simple as a creating a hand-crafted trashcan that they can use to lessen the trash that we can help the environment in our own little ways.

K-POP ZUMBA

Next, we had a time for a K-Pop Zumba. Nowadays, K-pop is getting more and more popular, especially with the kids. With that, my partner (Candace) and I decided to dance to K-pop. The original plan was we wanted to dance alone but we realized that these kids might want to dance along if they love K-pop. True enough, they wanted to. They already showcased their talents in dancing at the first segment of the program. We danced to Bboom Bboom by MOMOLAND and everyone was following. Although, since it was the Zumba version (easier version), they were confused. Apparently, most of them are so into K-pop that they know the actual dance steps. Unfortunately, our host decided without our knowledge to cut the next few songs we were supposed to dance and instead make them freestyle to another non-K-pop mainstream song. It was fun dancing with the kids, nonetheless.

GAMES After that, we played a few games. The first game was something I personally wouldn’t make children play if there are about 50+ of them because it was a bit hard to handle. It was “the boat is sinking”. Because there were a lot of them, some kids ended up in a stampede, some had a mini boxing moment, and some still continued playing even though they knew they were already out of the game. Things got so out of hand that I got flooded by children and almost fell on top of them all because they got a bit too excited thinking I was part of the game. I was just happy the hosts were wise enough to quickly change the game when they realized the game wasn’t working.   There was redemption when the second game came in. The game was a game usually played in Filipino birthday parties. The players dance in a circle with chairs in the middle, and when the music stops, they are supposed to run to the chairs and sit. The good part about this is that it’s easier to see the actual winners. Because of the first game, we (the organizers) have learned our lesson and gave extra attention to everything that was going to happen because we didn’t want a single child hurt by a game we’ve conducted. When the numbers of the chair were getting smaller and smaller, the more exciting the game was becoming. By the time there were three players and two chairs left, we changed to rules and had the children run from a distance instead of just circling around. By the time that there were two players and one chair left, it was the most difficult to get to the chair because the chair, without the players’ knowledge would get passed around by the organizers. In the end, a little girl was able to yank off the chair from one organizer and sit, claiming the winner’s pride. After winning, we had her sing a victory song. And to everyone’s surprise, she was actually very good!

END That was the last thing I saw in the program because I still had class to attend to. It was too bad because I was already enjoying the program because it was fun witnessing the children enjoy the program that we have prepared for them. I just hope the program ended well and the children all went home safe and fulfilled.
