Healthcare workers’ knowledge and perception of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant: A multinational cross-sectional study

I

n late November 2021, a new SARS-CoV-2 Variant of Concern (VOC) named Omicron (initially named B.1.1.529) was first detected in South Africa. The rapid spread of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant became globally dominantand the currently available COVID-19 vaccines showed less protection against this variant. This study aimed to investigate healthcare workers’ (HCWs) knowledge and perceptions about the novel SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant. A cross-sectional anonymous electronic survey concerning the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant was conducted among HCWs during the second week of January 2022. The survey instrument was distributed through social media among HCWs to explore awareness (2 items), knowledge (10 items), source of information (1 item) and perceptions (10 items). Respondents who answered ≥80% of the items correctly were considered as having good knowledge and perception. A total of 940 of the 1054 HCW participants completed the survey (response rate: 89.1%); they had a mean age of 31.2 ± 11.2 years, most were doctors (45.7%)and most were from Asia (64.3%). All the participants were aware of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant (100%). Only 36.3% attended lectures/discussions about Omicron and used news media to obtain information. Only a quarter of the HCWs demonstrated good knowledge (24.3%, n = 228) and perception (20.6%) about Omicron. However, while significant differences were observed in the knowledge and perception among HCWs, only a small proportion of doctors exhibited good knowledge (13%) and perception (10%) about the Omicron variant. HCWs who had participated in training/discussion related to the Omicron variant were more likely to have higher knowledge and perception scores (odds ratio: 1.80; 95% confidence interval: 1.04–3.11). As the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant spreads rapidly across the globe, ongoing educational interventions are warranted to improve knowledge and perceptions of HCWs. Recent Publications: 1. Biography Mohammadjavad Ashrafi Mahabadi, an M.D. from the Iran university of medical sciences. His primary research interests are investigating healthcare workers’ knowledge and perceptions about Covid-19 and its variants. He has published two papers regarding it with high citations. He is particularly interested in improving the memorization of topics, mainly through medical mnemonics. He is moderating a Telegram channel that shares his self-made mnemonics there for free from 2018.

Role of plant and algal metabolites in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic

A

sudden outbreak of viral infections has played havoc on human health, posing a serious health risk and causing significant economic harm. For the past two and a half years, the globe has been dealing with the challenges of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, which was initially detected in Wuhan at the end of 2019 and has since spread globally. As a result, the World Health Organization has declared the virus's disease a global pandemic. To combat COVID-19, researchers are constantly developing and implementing rapid diagnostics, safe and effective immunizationsand other nontraditional therapeutic approaches. Natural product-based cures and medicines, on the other hand, have aroused scientists' interest due to synthetic drug-related adverse effects and excessive prices. Antiviral compounds generated from natural resources, as well as some pharmaceuticals, have become increasingly popular in this regard. Plants/plant parts/natural products (extracts and/or metabolites) have been used to treat many human ailments in allopathic andAyurvedic medicine since ancient times. Plant metabolites are currently used in more than 25% of modern medicine and by approximately 80% of the world's population for basic health care. Several plants have been shown to have antiviral and immunomodulatory properties. Immunomodulatory effects have been documented in a variety of plants. They work by boosting cytokines selectively, activating lymphocytes, increasing natural killer cell countsand improving macrophage functions. Essential oils derived from herbs have been shown to boost the innate cellmediated immune response, making them useful as an immunological regulator against infectious illnesses. Algae, in addition to plants, are a rich source of antiviral and immunity-boosting chemicals such as lectins and sulfated polysaccharides. Furthermore, antibodies and vaccine raw materials against COVID-19 can be made from algae-derived chemicals or metabolites. Furthermore, several algae species have been shown to increase immunity and lower viral activity in humans, making them suitable for use as a COVID-19 prophylactic treatment. Using these immunomodulatory herbs and algae in combination could boost the immune system and protect the body from COVID-19. These findings, however, must be confirmed through scientific or clinical research. Recent Publications: Indrajeet Kumar. Evaluating knowledge level of rational drug use in patients with COVID-19 Sengal Bagci Taylan Hakkari University, Turkey

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has changed many things in people's lives. It has led to an increase in awareness, especially on health. Knowledge of rational drug use (RDU), which is of great importance in the fight against COVID-19, has an important place in health awareness. According to the World Health Organization, rational drug use is the patients' use of drugs that are suitable for their clinical needs, at the lowest costand to use them for a sufficient period of time, in doses as much as their individual needs. Irrational or non-rational use is the use of drugs that result in serious morbidity and mortality and lead to reduced access and attendance rates due to medicine stock-outs and loss of patient confidence in the health system. Therefore, evaluating the level of knowledge of patients in rational drug use will enable us to identify deficiencies and gain important ideas about the correct management of the COVID-19 pandemic. In our study, we aimed to determine the knowledge level of RDU in patients who tested positive for COVID 19 at least two weeks ago. We carried out our work between March 2021 and December 2021. We used random sampling method. We applied the Rational Drug Use Scale (RDUS), of which Demirtaş et al. (2018)* validated its validity and reliability, to volunteer patients aged 18-85 years who had positive COVID-19 test at least two weeks ago. We collected our data using patient demographic form and RDUS. Demographic data were expressed as a percentage value. RDUS data were expressed as score. Responses for each question were calculated as I don’t know=0, no=1, yes=2 scores. In the scale containing 21 questions, the minimum score was 0 and the maximum score was 42. SPSS 22.0 was used for statistical analysis of data. Student t test and ANOVA test were used for the statistical analysis of our normally distributed data. The difference was considered as statistically significant with P
