CUMULATIVE RECORD
◦ The progress in the developmental pattern of each student is recorded cumulatively from period to period in a comprehensive record designed for the purpose such a record is known as cumulative record.
DEFINITIONS ◦ According to Bonney and Hampleman “ Cumulative Records consist of all data about an individual pupil which a school considers enough to collect and record, usually in some organized way, for safe keeping from year to year. “ ◦ According to Arthur Jones Cumulative record is defined as a permanent record of a student which is kept up to date by school, it is his educational history with information about his school achievement, attendence, health, test scores and similar peritent data”. ◦ According to Ben Morris “ A record card is only a tool and unless a system of records can impress the majority of teachers as a sensible and useful device which it is within their powers of use, it is likely to be waste of public time and money to install it.
◦ According to Allen “ The cumulative record is defined as the record of information related to the evaluation of the individual pupil, which is usually placed on a card placed in one place.” ◦ According to Myor Thomas “ This is information about the disciple collected over a long period of time”.
Characteristics ◦ It is a permanent record about the pupil or student. ◦ It is maintained up to date. Whenever any new information is obtained about the pupil it is entered in the record. ◦ It present a complete picture about the educational progress of the pupil, his past achievements and present standing. ◦ It contains only those information‘s which are authentic, reliable, objective and useful. ◦ Confidential information about the pupil is not entered in the record but kept in a separate file. ◦ It is comprehensive in the sense that it contains all information about the pupil’s attendence, test score, health etc.

The Various Records Are: ◦ Identification Data Name of the pupil, address,sex, father‘s name, mother’s name, admission no, date of birth, class, section, any other information that helps in easy location of the card. ◦ Environmental and background data Home, neighbourhood influences socio- economic status of the family, cultural status of the family, number of brothers and sisters, their educational background, occupations of the family. ◦ Physical data Weight, height, illness, physical disabilities etc.
◦ Psychological data Intelligence aptitudes, interests, personality qualities, emotional and social adjustment and attitudes. ◦ Educational data Previous school, record, educational attainments, school marks, school attendence ◦ Co curricular data Notable experiences and accomplishment in various fields intellectual artistic, social, recreational etc ◦ Supplementary information It is obtained by the standardized test.
Sources Of Collection Of Information ◦ Parents or guardians data form Family background and the personal history of the child may be gathered from the parents who are to fill in the form. ◦ Personal data form In order to obtain information regarding the pupils interest and participation in extra curricular activities and his vocational preference the personal data is great use.. ◦ School records Records of achievements test, records of other test, admission and withdrawl records. ◦ Other sources Personal visits by the teachers, observations made by the teachers.
Objectives ◦ Helping students to know individual differences, interest, aptitude. ◦ To get information about the level and ability of the students. ◦ To assess the behavior of students in different situations. ◦ To provide parents with accurate information about their child. ◦ Helping the teachers regarding the achievement level so that they can also Scour themselves. ◦ Helping students to know progress / downgrade.
Importance In Teaching ◦ The cumulative record of various learners helps the teacher in classifying the learners according to their academic interests and mental abilities. ◦ The cumulative record of different learners in a class helps the new teacher to understand the needs of the learners. ◦ Cumulative records tell the teacher about the learner which learner needs personal attention. ◦ The cumulative record helps teachers to write personal report of learners and helps the principal to write character certificates more objectively. ◦ Cumulative records are very useful for teachers in preparing case studies. Because stored materials have a lot of similarity.
Advantages ◦ It provides the student with a comprehensive, objective picture including their strengths and weaknesses. ◦ It is useful for the Headmaster /Principal to ascertain the performance of the students in various subjects and their limitations. ◦ It is useful for the parents to grant special privileges to all deficiencies in thecase of their child. ◦ Teachers to know the students and its progress and weaknesses at a glance.
Disadvantages ◦ The entire data is of little use if they are not collected properly objectively & accurately. ◦ The purpose of cumulative record is not served if it is not maintained secretely and confidentially. ◦ The maintenance of cumulative record is hard some job like clerical work in the part of teachers ◦ It is a lengthy process which needs much time to be worked out.
Conclusion The maintenance of the cumulative record should begin when the students enters school and should follow the student from class to class within as school and from school as he continues his progress. The class teacher will maintain the cumulative record. In view of the fact that will be in a great position to judge them from different aspects.
