EU BACKS DIRECT VISION TRUCKS AND BUSES The European Parliament’s Internal Market Committee has backed safer ‘direct vision’ trucks and buses, amongst a dozen new life-saving measures for cars, vans, buses and trucks. The new direct vision standard will drastically reduce deadly blindspots, enabling truck and bus drivers to see more of the road around the vehicle, thus preventing accidents with cyclists and pedestrians. Currently there are no rules in place governing the amount of the road truck and bus drivers must be able to see. However, research clearly shows that trucks with low-entry cabs, which many European manufacturers already make, have excellent direct vision and prevent road fatalities. One thousand cyclists and pedestrians die every year in truck collisions. The Commission found that improving the direct vision performance of trucks would save up to 550 lives per year. Truckmakers will have to remove the blindspots in front of the driver seat and significantly reduce the blindspots through the side windows. This is good for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and will help EU countries save lives on their roads, the EU Committee argus The EU has the exclusive competence to mandate safety improvements for
new cars, vans, buses and trucks. The last new safety requirements date back to 2009 and their review and update were long overdue. For the past two years, several institutions and governments including 18 major European cities and eight EU countries led by Germany, Italy and France have demanded direct vision standards for trucks. The industry ministers of the 28 EU member states have already agreed a position on this legislation.
HAULIERS MUST ADVANCE THEIR BREXIT PREPARATIONS SAYS FTAI With weeks to go until Brexit, hauliers should take immediate action to advance their preparations or risk increased delays, red tape and costs in doing future business, according to FTA Ireland (FTAI), the leading organisation representing the country’s logistics industry. The advice comes as FTAI launches its guide, Brexit preparedness for the haulage sector. The guide provides clear and practical steps hauliers can take to mitigate any risks Brexit may present to their businesses. Aidan Flynn, General Manager of FTAI, commented: “Whatever the outcome of the Brexit negotiations – deal or no deal – it will have a seismic impact on the UK’s trading environment and in turn, the freight distribution and logistics sector on both sides of the Irish Sea. By leaving the Customs Union and the Single Market, the UK will trigger notable friction in the supply chain. There will inevitably be multiagency checks at ports and the administrative burden placed on the logistics industry – particularly road haulage – will hinder business development and, in some cases, cripple the small to medium enterprise sector. “2019 brings with it a significant amount of uncertainty, but
there are steps all hauliers can take today to mitigate the risks Brexit presents to their operations. With less than 100 days to go, very few hauliers are adequately prepared. That’s why FTAI has launched a comprehensive guide, Brexit preparedness for the haulage sector, which sets out recommendations to aid preparedness, covering key areas including routes to market; ECMT licencing; the Common Travel Area; and compliance and auditing requirements. Even if the worst-case scenario of a no-deal exit is avoided, the recommendations within the guide will nevertheless aid a company’s competitiveness and be beneficial to its future.” FTAI members can access the guide here http://ftai.ie/news/

NEW 'SMART' DIGITAL TACHOGRAPHS COMING IN JUNE Changes are coming to digital tachographs in June, that will have implications for drivers and workshop personnel, writes John Loughran. EC Regulation 165/2014 mandates that all vehicles that are registered after 15 June 2019, are used on international journeys and require a tachograph have a ‘smart’ head unit. The 'smart' head will deliver new functionality, not least the ability for enforcement agencies to read data remotely. The new regulations will strengthen the continuous enforcement of key road safety rules that apply to larger commercial vehicles and buses and pave the way way for the introduction of the so-called 'smart' tachograph The Regulations also contains provisions relating to the implementation and enforcement of Regulation (EC) No. 561/2006 on the harmonisation of certain social legislation relating to road transport (driving time and resting times of drivers of large commercial vehicles and buses). New 'smart' tachographs, will periodically record a vehicle’s location via satellite technology. The tachograph is a device that records the driving time, breaks, rest periods as well as periods of other work undertaken by a driver. This new system will allow for remote monitoring by enforcement personnel who will have the requisite equipment to interrogate the 'smart' tachograph to assess whether the vehicle concerned should be stopped for an enforcement check. Regulation (EU) No. 165/2014 sets out obligations in relation to the construction, installation, use, testing and control of tachographs used in road transport. The new EU Regulations are aimed at reducing tachograph fraud by making tachographs more resistant to interference and tampering and to facilitate easier enforcement. It includes measures designed to strengthen the standards that workshops and fitters must meet in order to install, repair, inspect and calibrate tachographs. EU regulation 165/2014 does not change the responsibilities of drivers or operators in relation to the use or operation of tachographs. When the new 'smart' tachograph comes on stream, it will also make life a little easier for drivers by no longer requiring them to manually record their location on the 'smart' tachograph. Regulation 165/2014 also specifies a number of requirements to be put in place in relation to the approval of fitters and workshops. These include the adoption of national procedures in
6
relation to the competency and reliability of fitters and workshops which covers training, workshop equipment and good repute. The new regulations allows for audits and inspections of workshops including assessments of the security measures taken and the handling of workshop cards. Unannounced inspections of a minimum of 10 per ent of the approved fitters and workshops annually and prevention of conflicts of interests and suspensions of fitters and workshops which fail to meet their obligations are allowed for under the new regulations. The new regulations also empower control officers to request workshops to perform tests on a vehicle to determine if there is

a manipulation device present. An Garda Síochána and the RSA enforcement personnel already have powers requiring workshops to undertake inspections of tachographs if there are suspicions that a manipulation device may be present and this new Statutory Instrument includes appropriate provisions in this regard. A new provision allows a member of An Garda Siochana or an officer of Customs to search a person who may be hiding a manipulation device on their person. The EU regulations include specific requirements relating to prohibition on production, distribution, advertising for offer of devices intended for manipulation of tachographs, prohibition on falsification, concealing, suppression or destruction of data on a tachograph or driver card or record sheet and prohibition on having a device capable of interfering with a tachograph.

FORS LAUNCHES NEW FUEL MANAGEMENT AND WINTER DRIVING GUIDES
The Freight Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) in the UK has unveiled two new guides offering advice on both fuel management and winter driving. The new ‘FORS Fuel
against adverse changeable weather, with forward planning being the first step. Drivers are encouraged to not only fully plan their route, but to seek up-to-date travel information and complete additional safety checks prior to any journey. As well as vehicle preparation, the FORS Winter guide includes tips on how to drive in snow and ice, heavy rain, strong winds, flooded areas, and fog and offers advice on which equipment to carry and a reminder to carry suitable clothing.
Management guide’ and ‘FORS Winter guide for HGV drivers’ are both now available to download and share with drivers, as handy in-cab reminders of both how to effectively manage fuel use and tips on seasonal driving.
FORS Fuel management guide Encouraging operators to remember the, ‘measure it, manage it, save it’ mantra of fuel efficiency, the newly launched FORS Fuel management guide seeks to help FORS members fulfil their commitment to monitoring fuel consumption and vehicle emissions and understand the policy and procedures they must put in place to achieve this. The guide is designed to help operators meet the FORS Standard version 5 Bronze requirement ‘O2 Fuel, emissions and air quality’ and features handy tips to help improve fuel efficiency, talking operators through the importance of fuel management, and how to avoid unnecessary fuel costs; including fuel purchasing, telematics, using AdBlue and correct storage of fuel at a depot. The importance of driver training and driver feedback is emphasised, along with correct tyre management. Sonia Hayward, FORS operations manager said, “FORS aims to ensure members have the best possible guidance at their fingertips to help each operator fulfil their commitments to
FORS Winter guide for HGV drivers FORS has issued its new ‘Winter guide for HGV drivers’ as a printable download. The document serves as a reminder of the safety precautions drivers should take to ensure they are prepared for inclement weather, drawing attention to the additional challenges winter driving brings. The handy guide includes tips to help drivers mitigate
safety, the environment and efficient operations. “Measuring and understanding fuel use is key to getting to grips with how costs could be minimised. Members must appoint a Fuel Champion to help implement their fuel management plan, and in addition, we encourage them to share this guide with drivers, who play a vital role in any fuel reduction initiative.”

IRU WELCOMES EU COUNCIL’S COMPROMISE ON TRUCK CO2 STANDARDS
The International Road Transport Union (IRU) has welcomed the European Unions proposals on CO2 standards for trucks, which it says strikes a realistic tone on the proposed target levels. The IRU says the Council has taken a sensible approach in confirming the EC’s proposed target of 15% and in safeguarding that the 2030 target can be revised in the 2022 revision. Setting the target before knowing which
which will not be market ready for long-haul operations. Therefore, meeting such a target, or an eventual benchmark for the post-2025 timeline, could see a shift of investment to smaller and less efficient vehicles ultimately creating greater

technologies can meet this ambition is unrealistic. In addition, the 30% currently proposed for 2030 would only be reachable by using a Well-to-Wheel (WTW) approach that takes into account the role of advanced renewable and synthetic liquid and gaseous fuels used in internal combustion
engines. The IRU is calling on policy-makers to ensure that moving to this methodology will be assessed in the 2022 revision. Based on current technology projection, meeting a 35% reduction, as proposed by the European Parliament for 2030, would require a wide-scale shift to electrification,
congestion and more CO2 emissions. Matthias Maedge, who leads IRU’s work in the EU, said: “Decision-makers must bear in mind that given the tight margins facing the sector, the pace of decarbonisation will not be determined by the availability of technology, but by the purchasing power of transport operators, which may prevent them from investing in some of these new technologies. CNG, LNG and hydrogen will play an important role in the future while the energy storage capacity, weight and the price of batteries remain an obstacle for commercial road transport. Therefore standards must ultimately be based on technological feasibility but also on commercial viability”. The Council proposal to guarantee the European Commission has access to real-world data will be important to ensure the trend of real-world emissions matches that shown in VECTO. However, IRU has concerns as to how this sensitive business data will be collected and what administrative and cost burden this will have on transport operators. In the trilogue discussions to follow, IRU calls on decisionmakers to adopt a realistic level of ambition, taking into account the role of renewable and synthetic fuels, that will tangibly help the sector to make the needed CO2 emissions reductions.

CO2 PROPOSALS WILL POSE MAJOR CHALLENGES FOR TRUCK MAKERS AND OPERATORS - ACEA Europe’s major truck manufacturers have reacted to the common position on future CO2 standards for heavy-duty vehicles adopted by EU environment ministers adopted at a Council meeting at the tail end of December, claiming the proposals will pose a major challenge fot truck makers and operators. “Following the deal on stringent CO2 targets for cars that was reached earlier this week, we now see that the 28 members states are also backing very ambitious truck CO2 standards,” stated Erik Jonnaert, Secretary General of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). “Reducing CO2 emissions from trucks by -15% in 2025 and -30% in 2030, as proposed by the ministers, will be a major challenge for industry and operators. What is possible for cars is often not an option for trucks – the difference between both is fundamental. Truck makers are willing to further cut carbon emissions but this should happen at a pace that is realistic, as it will not be possible with today’s technology alone.” Indeed, these CO2 standards will require the rapid and large-scale market uptake of alternatively-powered trucks. “However, it remains highly questionable whether the needed charging and refuelling infrastructure suitable for trucks can be rolled out within the span of just a few years. Member states
about huge investments here. In parallel, transport operators will also have to renew their truck fleets at a much faster pace. All this must happen before 2025, but is outside the control of our industry.” ACEA is particularly worried by the fact that these firstever EU CO2 standards for trucks depend on a baseline that is yet to be determined. This means that individual truck makers will not know their specific targets before 2021. When considering that trucks that will be delivered to customers in 2025 are already under development now, the targets become even more challenging. Given that this is the first time the EU sets CO2 standards for trucks, it is worrying that the sector would suddenly face disproportionally high penalties. Manufacturers are committed to continue investing in new fuel-efficient technologies and welcome the two-step approach agreed by the Council today, but the

should also be aware of their responsibilities in this respect,” Jonnaert cautioned. If we take electric trucks, for example, the infrastructure is not the same as that used for electric cars and is simply missing today – using charging points for cars would take days. And even for LNG the available infrastructure is still patchy across Europe. Jonnaert: “Clearly, we are talking
12
proposed amounts – even those for the first step – are way beyond reasonable and could severely jeopardise the industry’s competitiveness. Hence, the penalties need to be corrected, as they should be in line with the marginal costs of technology. ACEA now calls on the member states, the European Parliament and the Commission to work towards a well-balanced regulation that is ambitious, yet realistic. If we want to further reduce CO2 emissions from trucks, we need a consistent framework that enables and supports the industry to deliver the necessary CO2 reductions. Erik Jonnaert: “This essentially means making sure that the right conditions are in place to encourage the widespread deployment of zero- and low-emission trucks in terms of infrastructure, incentives and fleet renewal. At the same time, policy makers should not lose sight of transport operators’ needs nor the competitiveness of Europe’s truck industry”.

TRAINING
THE HEAVY VEHICLE MECHANICS Roisin Murray, TU Dublin School of Transport Engineering, Planning and Environment and Denis Brazil, Lecturer in Heavy Vehicle Mechanics gave John Loughran the rundown on the Heavy Vehicle Mechanics Apprenticeship programme at TU Dublin The School of Transport Engineering, Environment and Planning at Technological University Dublin has a long tradition in the delivery of craft apprenticeships. One of these apprenticeships is Heavy Vehicle Mechanics (HVM), which is delivered on behalf of SOLAS. The structure of craft apprenticeships is that an individual who wishes to undertake an apprenticeship seeks an employer who registers them with SOLAS. The apprentice will complete seven phases of the apprenticeship over a four year period. Phases 1, 3, 5 and 7 involve on-the-job training with the employer. Phase 2 normally takes place in an ETB or an Institute of Technology and phases 4 and 6 are undertaken in an

evident with a number of mechanics who pursued further education in TU Dublin (previously DIT) and are now fulfilling management roles within various transport and logistics companies. The apprentices for HVMs vary greatly throughout the industry from the small garage to large fleet operators and semi-state companies. One of the larger employers of HVM apprentices is Dublin Bus with a diverse fleet of around 900 buses. Institute of Technology or TU Dublin. HVM is an attractive career with and with a skills shortage in this area, demand for mechanics is increasing and this offers qualified mechanics various career opportunities. Furthermore, as HVM and fleet maintenance is a fundamental part of transport / logistics operations, there is also ample opportunities for HVMs to upskill and progress through lifelong learning into these related fields. phase 6 in early March. “In the last eight weeks we have covered the new version 4 syllabus which entails new cutting edge heavy vehicle technology and associated systems, this has been of great benefit in terms of understanding and maintaining these vehicle systems for operational and legislative reasons,” he commented. It is government policy with craft apprenticeships that before implementation, the respective syllabus be approved by SOLAS and validated by QQI. A revised syllabus for Heavy Vehicle Mechanics was validated in 2016. The new syllabus reflects the everchanging technology associated with HVMs and consists

in their employment as a heavy vehicle mechanic. This is reinforced by online and classroom based portfolio assessment. The implementation of the new syllabus has brought investment in new equipment in a dedicated Heavy Vehicle Mechanics workshop in Beresford Street in TU Dublin. This investment by the Higher Education Authority is valued at €500,000. This investment is welcome in light of fast-
future of apprentice training”. The future is positive for the heavy vehicle mechanics apprenticeship at TU Dublin. There has been an increase in the number of apprentices over the past five years. Indications also predict that the number of apprentices will hold over the short to medium term.

With a staff of 11, the company is large enough to cater for the biggest orders, yet small enough to ensure that every customer gets personal and friendly attention. This is one of our Unique Selling Points, and sets us aparts from the competition.” Another key pillar of the company's business philosophy is its insistance on supplying only compliant product. Karl concedes that on a number of occasions the company has lost business to unscrupulous operators that don't operate to the same high standards. “There is a lot of cheap, non-compliant product on the market,

ASSURED PERFORMANCE GIVES OE TURBO ADVICE Assured Performance, the Turbo specialists, is advising truck and bus operators that fitting bon genuine turbos could result in a CVRT failure. Assured Performance says that using a nongenuine turbocharger, in some cases, will increase NOx levels by up to 28 per cent, potentially causing the vehicle to fail its CVRT inspection. The increase in NOx levels can be further exacerbated by fitting a poorly remanufactured unit, that uses uncontrolled, non-genuine spare part. The only way to guarantee that our vehicle passes the CVRT emissions test is by fitting a genuine OE turbo, Assured Performance says. DAYCO - HEAVY DUTY STRENGTH Dayco is a truly global business with research & development facilities, manufacturing operations and distribution centres throughout the world. It specialises in power transmission products and is a leading engine products and drive systems supplier for the automotive, industrial and aftermarket industries. Dayco is also a major player in the heavy duty (HD) sector, where it supplies original equipment (OE) components, to vehicle manufacturers including Volvo, DAF, Scania, Iveco and Mercedes-Benz. Although the company originally made its name through the design and manufacture of drive belts, it has grown its product portfolio to include the associated components within the drive system to reflect its sector specialism. Therefore, the Dayco HD range also includes drive components – tensioners and idlers – to provide a complete system solution for the commercial vehicle aftermarket. At the heart of the auxiliary drive system is the belt, which, depending on the application, will be of either V or Poly-V design. Despite their relatively simple design, Dayco’s V-belts, which consist of more than 150 part numbers, are manufactured from premium quality materials to provide strength and durability, while providing optimum resistance to oil, grease, heat, chemical agents, and ozone, as well as continuous flexing. In contrast, the company’s Poly-V belts, which consist of more than 360 part numbers, are made of EPDM and manufactured to the latest design criteria to deliver the very best in contemporary belt performance. With a larger contact area compared to a V-belt, the Poly-V belt is capable of driving a greater number of ancillary components and can also transfer power from its outer surface, which, dependent on the application, can be either smooth or textured. Due to the fact that the load is spread across the belt, Poly-V belts are comparatively thin and therefore have tremendous flexibility, which means they are also able to be used on small diameter pulleys, increasing the scope for engineers when
seeking the ideal solution for the drive systems of new engine designs. To ensure the anciliary components on the system are driven in accordance with their design specification, the drive belt must be kept at the correct tension and under a controlled load. This is made possible by the use of tensioners and idlers and with the increasing power of modern engines, allied to the growing number of auxiliary components driven by the belt, these drive
components are now highly developed and engineered to exacting standards. Tensioners come in two broad designs: automatic and fixed and although there are several types, each one designed for a specific application, its main body/spring case design, arm offset and length, as well as pulley size, are all designed to ensure maximum performance of the drive belt system and are, therefore, key to ensuring the reliable operation of the vehicle. However, the tensioner is often overlooked during its service and maintenance.
The most common tensioners consist of five main elements: a spring case and spring assembly, pivot bush, spring bush, arm and arm bush. Depending on the requirements of a given application, Dayco offers both flat and round wire solutions for the spring material used in the spring assembly. However, whatever the spring type, the performance and behaviour of a Dayco aftermarket tensioner is equivalent to the OE component. The pivot bush is another element that is central to the performance of the tensioner, as both it and the spring bush ensure that the tensioner moves smoothly, while being appropriately damped and in conjunction with the arm plate, also remains correctly aligned. This ensures that the belt continues to operate under the designated tension when the engine is both under full load and at idle. When it comes to idlers, which are generally manufactured in metal or plastic, their role is to guide the path of the belt and in doing so, prevent vibrations and undue noise. Dayco’s tensioner and idler range now comprises more than 190 part numbers. In order for technicians to carry out the best possible job and fleet managers maximise the reliability of their vehicles, the auxiliary drive system should be considered as a single entity, instead of looking at the belt and drive components separately. Therefore, rather than changing individual items, technicians should replace the complete system, which allows them to provide a thorough repair solution. For more information regarding the OEM quality power transmission products in the Dayco range, please email: info. [email protected] or visit: www.dayco.com

PREMIUM QUALITY WATER PUMPS FROM BORG & BECK With a 100-year heritage, Borg & Beck is a global supplier of Commercial Vehicle (CV) components and an established brand within First Line Ltd. The CV programme offers distributors a comprehensive range of Brake Discs, Pads and Drums, Steering, Water Pumps, Air and Electrical Coils, and Rotating Electrics offering, a credible alternative to OES. The ever-popular range of Borg & Beck CV Water Pumps offers more than 65 references, covering a wide range of the UK’s CV applications such as; Iveco, DAF, Volvo, Renault, Mercedes, Scania and MAN. Amongst these are high demand references like Iveco EuroCargo (Borg & Beck reference BWP32685), Scania P/G/R/T Series (BWP32682), Mercedes Atego (BWP32687) and Renault Magnum BWP32689. At the heart of the water pump lies the key component – the Dynamic Seal Pack. This unit contains both the bearing, which supports the load on the shaft allowing the pump run at optimum efficiency; and the mechanical seal, which ensures coolant loss is kept to an absolute minimum. Despite being a small component and concealed within the casing, it is the most important element of a quality water pump. The seal has two contacting faces, one stationary and one rotating, forced together by a spring. These faces are machined to be as flat as possible, minimising friction and leakage, and usually lapped together. Dissimilar materials are used, one hard (such as silicon carbide) and one softer
(such as carbon-graphite). A common misconception is that a water pump should not lose any coolant, in fact the seal pack is designed to allow a small volume of coolant to pass between the contact faces to lubricate the seal. This either then runs out of the weep hole, or into an evaporation chamber where, as the name implies, it evaporates. Both perform the same task, but the evaporation chamber stops the user thinking their water pump is leaking when in fact it is functioning perfectly. It is these imperceptible factors that differentiate a highquality product from that of an ordinary one. With this is in mind Borg and Beck CV Water Pumps are manufactured in ISO / TS certified factories and undergo extensive testing and quality control during their production to ensure optimum product performance.

HELLA DEMONSTRATES LIGHTING COMPETENCE
Original equipment (OE) manufacturer and system supplier, Hella, once again is demonstrating its lighting competence, this time through a range of retrofit LED rear combination lamps for DAF and MAN applications. LED rear lamps provide operators with significant power consumption reductions and greater illumination in comparison to traditional filament bulb technology that was previously favoured by the vehicle manufacturers (VMs). Not only does this replacement solution from Hella address the environmental deficit that fleets operating older vehicles consequently experience, but it allows them to modernise the look of their fleet in a practical and straight forward manner, as these units also provide a direct replacement in terms of their fitting and wiring points. Additional benefits include their construction such as, for the first time on a full-LED lamp, the outer non-patterned lens is no longer fixed and glued to the housing. This means that it is no longer necessary to replace the entire lamp in the event of minor mechanical damage to the lens, which in turn leads to a considerable saving in costs. In the event of damage, the lens assembly (including seal and screws) can be ordered and replaced. Another plus is the fact that both left and right lenses are identical, thus further reducing costs when it comes to stockholding. The combinations units also have an innovative appearance, thanks to a dynamic direction indicator incorporated into their design. The dynamic flasher, first applied to series production on premium-class passenger cars in 2013, no longer performs the flasher function using a surface area indicator, but rather with a running light function that appears to ‘sweep’ across the unit. Alongside its overall contemporary design, the new look flasher underlines the modern and stylish appearance of the lamp in conjunction with its glowing body optics. The striking, modern full-LED rear combination lamp therefore provides vehicles with an unmistakable signature when

driving by day or by night. Despite their modular design, there are variants should operators require additional features, such as a back-up alarm, alternative spacing of the mounting screws or with licence plate illumination. Emphasising the reliability afforded by LED technology, each element features multi-LEDs, for instance the tail light incorporates 12, the stop light 18 and the fog light eight, whereas the direction indicator and the side marker light are six and five respectively. “The 2VD/2VP 012 381 rear combination lamp provides the ideal replacement/upgrade solution for all MAN TGX, TGM and TGL model series as of January 2014,” Steve Hudson, Hella’s head of business development explained. “When it comes to DAF applications, they are suitable for all Euro 5 vehicles with DIN connector from CW33/2009 to CW12/2012 and Euro 6 vehicles from CW13/2012, although a software update will be required.” For more information about the OE quality products available from Hella, please call customer services on: 01295 662400 or email [email protected]

DVSA ISSUES GUIDANCE ON USE OF OLDER TYRES The Driver & Vehicle Services Agency (DVSA) in the UK has issued a new guide on the use of tyres over 10 years old. The DVSA's guidance doesn’t ban tyres of a specific age. It only says that operators should have an adequate tyre management system in place and consider the risks associated with the use of older tyres. The main factors to consider are speed, axle weight, journey distance, and the position of the tyre on the vehicle. These all influence how much stress the tyre is exposed to and the effect tyre failure may have on control of the vehicle. Obviously, any tyre failure is a concern for road safety. It
There isn’t a ban on older tyres and you don’t necessarily need to stop using them. It all depends on how you’re using the tyres and how you manage any risks they might pose. could cause a crash, there could be delays because of a broken down vehicle, and shredded tyre remnants could pose a danger to other road users. All tyres of all ages should be regularly inspected by a competent person. This should be part of your tyre management and vehicle maintenance system. Even if an older tyre appears safe, you’ll need to assess and manage any risks associated with its use. A short journey at a low speed when the vehicle is lightly loaded poses different risks to those involving long journeys, high-speed journeys, or use while the vehicle is laden. Department for Transport guidance states that you should not use older tyres on a front axle. An older tyre could still be used on the rear axle as part of a twin wheel fitment, though. Whether it’s safe to use older tyres on a three axle-trailer as
part of a single-wheel fitment depends on how you’re using trailer and managing the tyres. Having 3 axles and 6 wheels does reduce the risk of trailer instability and loss of control if a single tyre fails. But using older tyres at high speed and fully loaded potentially increases the risk of tyre failure. In short, it again depends on how you’re using the tyres. That means your tyre management risk assessment should consider how you use the trailer and how often you inspect your tyres. Trailers used at slower speed or lower weight will reduce the risk. So you can still use old tyres on a single wheel fitment as long as you have good tyre management systems in place. Following a coach crash in 2013, concerns were raised that older tyres are more likely to fail catastrophically than younger tyres. As a result, the Department for Transport (DfT) is currently researching the effect of age on tyre integrity. The results of this research will be publish later this year. The DfT decided to introduce this guidance on the use of older tyres as a precaution while the research is still ongoing. Once the results have been received and reviewed, the DVSA may reconsider or refine its approach to older tyres. To sum up There isn’t a ban on older tyres and you don’t necessarily need to stop using them. It all depends on how you’re using the tyres and how you manage any risks they might pose. You should have a comprehensive tyre management plan in place that includes the identification of a tyre’s age. You should not use older tyres on the steering axle of a motor vehicle. If you choose to do this, you must thoroughly assess the risks. Ultimately, you are responsible for the safe operation of your vehicle.

MICHELIN X WORKS TYRES HELP CONSTRUCTION COMPANY SAVE
North Yorkshire and Teesside construction company, Biker Group is saving up to £80,000 a year on fuel costs and tyrerelated downtime after taking on a 100 per cent Michelin policy. Rolling resistance data provided by the manufacturer – and verified by the firm – shows the efficiencies given by the Michelin X Works tyres have helped cut its annual CO2 emissions by 209 tonnes thanks to the improved fuel efficiency compared to competitor tyres. The company had been using a combination of Michelin and competitor fitments until two years ago, when it signed its entire fleet up to the manufacturer’s multi-life policy – using a mix of 295/80 R22.5 and 315/80 R22.5 new and Michelin Remix tyres across its rigids and tractor units, and 385/65 R 22.5 on trailers. Managing Director Tony Biker says: “On some days our vehicles may only do up to four miles, but in some pretty atrocious quarry conditions where they can take a real hammering. We also need them to be flexible enough to cater for primarily road-based deliveries at other times. “Since moving to a 100 per cent Michelin policy we have seen a noticeable reduction in downtime due to tyre damage; plus we’re benefitting from improved fuel efficiency, which in turn cuts emissions too. Quite simply they are the best product on the market.” Biker Group takes advantage of the manufacturer’s accidental tyre damage guarantee which promises to refund customers in the event that accidental damage is suffered before a new or Remix tyre is 50 per cent worn, subject to terms and conditions.
And with the Remix policy it also gets multiple lives from each new casing – new, regroove, Remix and regroove – with the potential for a worn Remix tyre to be retreaded again through Michelin’s Encore remoulding process. Biker adds: “The tyre damage guarantee is invaluable to us. We have only had to change a few but Michelin has honoured the agreement each time. Plus, the strength of the Michelin casings gives us a high acceptance rate for retreading, which in turn means we get great value for money.” The Michelin X Works range is designed for operators which do most of their mileage on roads but need traction and robustness on rough tracks and construction sites for deliveries – ideal for Biker Group. Michelin X Works drive tyres also feature specially designed Z-sipes that increase the traction on road in winter conditions, especially on snow and ice, allowing them to attain 3PMSF certification.

BRAKESAFE BRAKE TESTER PERFECT FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLE APPLICATIONS The Brakesafe portable brake tester with printer, which is perfect for commercial vehicle applications, has gone down a treat since its introduction to the Irish market, by Techplus last year. The Turnkey BrakeSafe is ideal for use on Commercial Vehicle roadworthiness vehicle safety inspections. Workshops and fleet operators can now provide test results that show the vehicle and trailer brakes meet the required brake efficiency standards for commercial vehicles and mobile cranes. There is also an HGV trailer testing mode that may be used to determine HGV semi-trailer / trailer brake efficiency. BrakeSafe offers the highest standard test instrument at an affordable price to fleet owners and garages. These instruments are a low cost alternative to ‘rolling road’ brake testers and are approved by the Driver and Vehicle Services Agency (DVSA) in the UK. The Turnkey Brakesafe has been involved in successful trials with comparisons against roller brake testers. To date it is the only brake tester found to be acceptable. BrakeSafe is easy to use and can be located anywhere in the vehicle. It is self-levelling and automatically aligns itself with the direction of travel. For basic operation, no connections need to be made to the vehicle. Optionally, the instrument can be used to measure and record the force applied to the brake pedal. In this case a transducer is attached to the pedal. This also allows the delay time of the braking system to be determined. All tests are annotated with the time and date, vehicle identity, test conditions and type of brake tested. The instrument can be pre-loaded with 99 vehicle names, 70 trailers, 16 test conditions, 4 brake types, and 8 examiner names. Each name
38
can also be edited via the instrument’s single click control. BrakeSafe is designed, developed and manufactured by Turnkey Instruments Ltd. Its design has evolved over many years in response to customer feedback and as a result, BrakeSafe is simply the best brake tester available today, anywhere. BrakeSafe is already proving very popular with Irish fleet owners and vehicle maintenance providers. Meanwhile, another Turnkey product proving popular in Ireland, the g-meter+, is designed for statutory annual NCT brake performance testing and is approved for all classes of roadgoing vehicles (including class I & II). It is also suitable for statutory testing of HGVs and TÜV certified as a brake-measuring instrument. The instrument is self-aligning and senses the direction of travel. It measures peak and mean acceleration, and stopping time, calculating the stopping distance. Deceleration can be measured in %g or in m s-2. The g-meter+ stores up to 3 sets of test results in its memory and comes with an optional printer for recording results.

ROADLINK ADVISES ON BRAKE SHOE RELINING
Brake shoe relining is currently enjoying a buoyant period for commercial vehicle brake specialist, Roadlink International. Here, the company explains a key process in the production stage – quality riveting. When shear braking force is applied, if there is a gap present between rivet shank and brake lining, or rivet shank and brake shoe platform, there is potential for the lining to move. Once this occurs, the movement will increase rapidly, with consequent failure of the shoe assembly. Roadlink’s detailed production process for relining brake shoes ensures there is no gap between the rivet shank and brake lining / brake shoe platform. The brake lining is secured to the brake shoe in four distinct ways: • The downwards ‘clamp force’ on the rivet head. • The friction between the underside of the lining and the surface of the shoe. Each shoe platform is linished before relining. This is where the shoe platform is passed over a moving abrasive belt, which removes any high spots from the platform of the shoe, so that linings fit correctly. • The force applied when inserting rivets causes the rivet to swell into the gap of the rivet hole in both the lining and the shoe, therefore ‘locking’ the lining firmly to the shoe platform. • The rollover on the underside of the shoe secures the rivet in place from underneath.
These four different forces ensure everything is entirely locked into place. This is why quality riveting in a remanufactured brake shoe is critical to ensuring safety. Fitting brake shoes – Best practice Technicians should never fit a brake shoe with loose rivets. When the rivet swells into the gap on both the brake lining and platform of the shoe, this locks everything in place.
Even without the downwards clamp force or the rollover on the underside, if the rivet has swelled sufficiently this alone should stop any braking pressure forcing the linings to move. Roadlink has one of the largest ranges in Europe covering more than 200 references. Brake shoes come complete with OE brake linings to suit all types of truck, trailer and PCV applications. Roadlink’s state of the art brake shoe reline operation is approved to ISO9001:2015 quality & ISO14001:2015 environmental standards. Roadlink adheres to a 15-stage production process for relining brake shoes. This involves rollers being checked where applicable and shoe platforms linished then treated with an anti-corrosion long lasting water-based paint, unique to Roadlink. An inspection is undertaken after each stage and shoes come supplied with a full warranty. Every Roadlink exchange brake shoe carries a unique serial number that allows for total product traceability. The company’s brake shoe reline operation was the first in the UK to achieve the coveted Brak Assured status. The "Brake Assured" symbol guarantees that brake shoes are fully remanufactured to the highest product quality and safety standards possible.
FEBI BRAKING - BECAUSE EVERY INCH COUNTS When the brakes on a truck or bus are applied, air pressure is diverted to the braking units. These, in turn, apply pressure to the friction surfaces to create the braking action. Due to the weight of the vehicle and the kinetic energy involved, high temperatures are produced. When used over a prolonged period, brake fade causes the coefficient of friction of the braking material to reduce and potentially cause failure of the braking action. To reduce the likelihood of this happening, braking manufacturers have to choose the materials used carefully, and operators must always change braking components in pairs. For this reason, febi provides an extensive range of paired braking components in OE matching quality for a variety of commercial vehicles. febi tests its truck braking components not only through endurance testing but also through extreme test truck racing. Because when it comes to an emergency stop, every inch counts. With over 15,000 applications, febi’s Truck Division offers a wide range for European commercial vehicle manufacturers. From steering, engine, braking, chassis and wheel mounting
technology to vehicle electrics and pneumatics, febi covers all areas of vehicle component replacement. The febi product brand is part of the bilstein group, which also incorporates the strong SWAG and Blue Print brands. MAJOR BUS OPERATORS CHOOSE TO FIT SYNERGY Like many in the commercial vehicle industry, bus and coach operators are facing ever increasing challenges, with rising costs and more emphasis on safety. Choosing a braking product that is cost effective, safe and durable in all conditions can be a particular difficult challenge. Commercial vehicles experience a wide spectrum of use in service and this has a direct bearing on the duty to which their brake system is subjected and the operating temperatures
that are reached. At the one end of the scale vehicles can be running up and down the motorway hardly ever applying their brakes, others could be constantly stopping and starting, whilst others could be employed as tippers, and yet others on routes with long hill descents involving continuous application of the brakes. Brake temperature mapping of these different operating conditions, indicates temperatures that can range from the relatively low 200 degrees c under light conditions all the way up to 850 degrees c during long hill descents or urban bus routes. Basic pad grades, which are perfectly suitable up to medium levels of duty, wear at a much faster rate once the operating temperature exceeds 400 degrees centigrade for any length of time; this is where a better, premium, grade of pad, containing higher temperature wear resisting ingredients in its formulation becomes an advantage, providing the end user with a more cost effective fitment due to its extended pad life. Higher temperatures and speeds can also result in thermal crazing and cracking of the brake disc, resulting in the need for the brake discs to be replaced to ensure safe operation. This
is why the compatibility of the pad and disc is important, and needs to be included as a part of the brake pad development process – if the pad is too hard or too stiff the braking load and resulting temperature build up will be more localised rather than being distributed uniformly over the braking path leading to “hot spots” on the surface of the disc and eventual rupture (cracking), of the disc surface. The development of brake pads and discs has to recognise, and cater, for all of these possible conditions to ensure that the resulting products that are offered for sale are safe, and durable – it is not really enough to just carry out the mandatory UNECER90 tests which cover the basic braking effectiveness and fade but do not test for performance, durability and compatibility between brake pad and brake disc under the wide range of different service operating conditions. At Juratek the many thousands of man hours that go into developing a new product starts with small sample tests; the most promising materials from this work progressing to full scale inertia dynamometer tests at full axle loads. The development objective at this stage is to measure and compare the effectiveness of the development grades with established materials over a range of different speeds, pressures and temperatures. Wear testing at different disc temperatures then follows, together with an assessment of the compatibility of the material with the brake disc under different operating conditions to ensure the material does not cause thermal crazing, cracking or excessive wear of the disc. The most promising candidates from this work will then undergo field tests before a final selection is made for legal approval and offer for sale. Juratek Synergy products – Synergy Red (Premium) & Synergy Yellow (Premium Plus) both underwent this exhaustive, 24 month development process. Both offer outstanding features and value for money. They have a high performance level, which provides for shorter stopping distances, with excellent stability of performance with speed and pressure, coupled with long pad life and excellent working compatibility with the brake disc. This is why, after extended service trials Synergy premium braking products are chosen by some of the UK’s largest Fleet and bus operators due to their low pad and disc wear and freedom from brake squeal – an important factor in the constant stop-start-stop metro bus world.

BATTERIES
EBT OFFERS BATTERY ADVICE The knock-on effects of vehicle development can have unintended consequences explains John Bentley, technical manager for Ecobat Battery Technologies (EBT), formally Manbat. “As the UK’s largest independent battery distributor, there is very much more to EBT’s product and service offering than VARTA®, but when it comes to the heavy duty sector, it’s this particular brand that is rising to the challenges that market developments are forcing. “The VARTA ProMotive CV series comprises the original Black, Blue and Silver ‘Trio’ models, as well as the range topping EFB. The Black conforms to EN 2 (European Norm – which is a consolidated quality standard throughout Europe that reflects the battery’s vibration resistance and cyclic lifecycle under rigorous test conditions), is arguably as good as or better than any other battery in the market and so, provides complete peace of mind for a direct replacement for ‘standard’ vehicle requirements. “Step up to the Blue (EN 3) and Silver (EN 4) and the range provides a subsequent increase in performance and durability to cater for, until recently, virtually every heavy duty requirement, including off-road applications. However, due to the on-going regulatory pressure on vehicle manufacturers (VMs) to reduce engine emissions, there has been a development that has had ramifications beyond its intended purpose and has required the introduction of a specific solution that, to date, only VARTA has been able to fully address. “Traditionally, lorry batteries have been situated along the length of the vehicle, generally under the driver’s door, but these legal changes which have resulted in the introduction of EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and SGR (selective catalytic reduction) systems, require the injection of a substance such as AdBlue. This needs to be held in a suitably sized tank, with a convenient location, such as under the drive’s door, which has therefore forced VMs to relocate the batteries from this position. “The solution for most VMs has been to opt for end of frame mounting, which locates the batteries across the vehicle, generally under the ‘fifth-wheel’. However, this resolution has had two unforeseen repercussions. The first is a significant increase in the level of vibration, particularly when hitching and unhitching a trailer, and the second, a far higher likelihood of acid stratiphication caused by a decrease in unhomogenised electrolyte. “In order for a lead acid battery to operate efficiently, the electrolyte, which is 65% water and 35% acid, must be 100% homogenised from the top of the plate to the bottom. With batteries mounted along the length of a vehicle, the electrolyte is kept well-mixed by the natural acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle during its day-to-day use, which, in effect, stops the acid sinking. By contrast, batteries mounted across the vehicle do not benefit from this process, which means the acid, the heaviest element, tends to separate and drop to the bottom of the cells. “This has an adverse effect on the battery’s ability to charge, as it can’t charge in concentrated acid and is less efficient in the dilute. In addition, the concentration of acid will cause the lead plates to sulphate from the bottom, commonly known as bottom plate sulphation, and become brittle, which left unchecked, will result in the battery losing a third of its capacity in as little as six months and contribute to its premature end of life. “To overcome these issues, VARTA developed the ProMotive EFB battery, which not only combats the vibration issues that can result in the failure of the tabs that connect the plates to the cast on strap at the top of the plates, caused by the bottom of the plate breaking due to its brittleness, but also the electrolyte mixing issue previously mentioned. “To address vibration, the plates within the VARTA EFB sit on ‘hot melt’ rubber at the bottom of the casing and all the tabs are linked together using the same material. The ‘through the wall
42
connectors’ have also been strengthened, making them virtually unbreakable, which is not the case with many traditional batteries that can subsequently loose efficiency as their plates break up. “When it comes to the electrolyte, VARTA’s engineers have come up with a patented solution, that combines a very clever Labyrinth lid and a mixing element within the battery’s internal design. This creates capillary action through each cell of the battery, which circulates the electrolyte and forces the acid concentrated electrolyte to mix with the diluted electrolyte and results in its effective homogenisation within less than a minute of the vehicle pulling away, meaning its ability to charge, as well as its overall performance is enhanced, hence the acronym EFB – enhanced flooded battery. “This is all very well, but what does this technology really mean for fleet vehicles? I hear operators ask. “The answer is twofold and comes first in a reduction in the risk of vehicle breakdown caused by inferior batteries and the resulting downtime caused by complete battery failure and secondly, with an increase in the useable life of the vehicle’s batteries, both of which significantly improve efficiencies across the business. In fact, the predicted life expectancy of the VARTA EFB battery is between 35% and 40% compared a conventional SLI (starter, lights & ignition) battery. “The demand on batteries continues to escalate as the number of electrically powered devices increases and many of these devices have to operate in a ‘key out’ scenario, in other words when the engine cannot be run, so without any charge going back in to the batteries. In addition, the number of overnights spent in the cab for a typical pan-European operator has risen from two days a week, to five. “Combine this demand with the restricted charging caused by non-homogenised electrolyte/vibration damaged plates and the result is batteries that are gradually discharging to the point that they fail. The impact of this on a pan-European operator can be huge, particularly as the cost to be recovered from an autoroute is generally €800 to begin with. So why run the risk of relying on an inferior battery for the sake of saving a few quid on the initial purchase? “Another scenario that causes premature battery failure is the capacity to which SLI batteries can recover between multidrops using a tail lift. The time it takes to recharge batteries from a single engine start is generally 20 minutes. So, bearing in mind a tail lift draws many amps, multi-drop operators with short run durations can run into trouble very quickly, particularly as overnight drain is typically 80 amps. “Finally, because of all of the factors discussed, the life expectancy of the VARTA ProMotive EFB is appreciably longer than the alternative options. So again, it’s simply not logical to pay a bit less and for a battery that will potentially only provide a shortened working life. Instead operators should go for the option that returns a significantly more cost-effective, long-term solution and also increases the reliability and dependability of their fleet!” The two VARTA ProMotive EFB battery types are Din B (629 box) part number B90 and Din C (632/625 box) part number C40.

TOTAL RUBIA OPTIMA RANGE FOR CLEANER AND MORE FUEL-EFFICIENT TRANSPORT Total Rubia Optima, the newest range of heavy-duty engine oils is currently available from Finol Oils. Designed specifically for heavy-duty engines, Total Rubia Optima complies with the most recent categories defined by the American Petroleum Institute (API). The API CJ-4 service category that was developed nearly a decade ago has now been replaced by two new categories, API CK-4 and API FA-4, to meet the new standards related to greenhouse gas emission limits. Cleaner and more fuel-efficient diesel engines are now mandatory and therefore require new oils to meet these requirements. With the Rubia Optima range, Total has worked closely with its customers to offer technologically advanced lubricants.
tests (Laboratory, bench and road tests) to achieve results that show excellent performance in oxidation stability and protection against wear, deposits and soot. International approvals Rubia has a greater number of advanced approvals than most products on the market. This means multi-brand fleets require fewer products to meet crucial requirements of the most advanced engines on the market. Reduced costs Rubia offers better fleet cost savings with a full suite of Total fuel economy engine and transmission oils, and includes Total Check, a leading condition monitoring service of used oil analysis. The Total Group has collaborated closely with key heavyduty original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to develop the new Rubia Optima oils with performance that surpass CJ-4 oils with outstanding oxidation control, shear stability, and oil aeration control. These benefits illustrate the Rubia Optima range’s numerous benefits and performances validated by key OEMs. Outstanding Wear Protection In the official Cummins ISB engine test, Rubia Optima 2100 XFE 10W-30 formed a protective film between the moving surfaces of the tappet and cam that reduced wear by up to 56 per cent.
The new Rubia Optima range is the direct result of the Total Group’s continued commitment and investment in research and development. Recognised for the advanced performance and technology of its lubricants, the Total Group capitalises on this innovative approach to ensure its products meet today’s demands. Thanks to its complex formulations, the Rubia Optima range provides better engine protection and an unparalleled level of performance. It will help limit carbon dioxide emissions while improving the engine’s fuel consumption and improve oxidation resistance, allowing the longest oil drain intervals authorised by the manufacturers. The Range Rubia Optima 1100 15W-40 and Rubia Optima 1100 FE 10W-30 both meet the CK-4 specification, and the 1100 FE 10-W30 lowers viscosity and offers fuel economy benefits. Rubia Optima 2100 XFE 10W-30, which meets the FA-4 specification, enables extra fuel economy by reducing HighTemperature High Shear (HTHS) viscosity. It has limited backward compatibility because of its lower HTHS viscosity. The new Rubia Optima benefits from Total's state-of-the-art “T.I.R. Technology”. right oil for their vehicle’s engine. Modern trucks and buses use new technologies to make as much as 30 per cent higher torque, but that also brings higher engine temperatures and pressures. This can lead to accelerated oxidation and oil thickening, increased build-up of deposits, and rapid depletion of the oil’s acid-controlling reserves. All of which pushes the oil closer to breakdown and reduces useful oil life. Castrol Vecton with System Pro Technology™ has extra performance reserve that fights oil breakdown and also adapts to higher temperatures and pressures for a longer useful oil life. This extra performance reserve fights oil breakdown by helping to control oxidation, reduce deposits, neutralise harmful acids and also adapt to higher temperatures, maintaining viscosity. That means longer useful oil life, giving you confidence in your maximum drain interval. Castrol’s range of engine oils are formulated to deliver a high level of engine protection throughout service intervals, which can help you save on maintenance costs, repairs and downtime. FINOL OFFERS ADVICE ON CORRECT LCV LUBRICATION
While Total Lubricants has forged a reputation for premium quality lubricants in the heavy-duty commercial vehicle market with its Rubia Optima brand, light commercial vehicles (LCV) have significantly different technical demands, and that’s where the Total Quartz range comes into play. The main difference between the oils used in LCVs and CVs is in their detergency and dispersant attributes. Heavy-duty diesel engines require greater detergency and dispersant because their engines are much larger. Using the right oil in the right vehicle helps prevent soot from getting past the piston heads and into the engine. If this happens it can thicken the oil and create blockages in smaller pipes, resulting in mechanical problems which could lead to the vehicle being off the road. In the commercial vehicle world, where time is money, any vehicle downtime can lead to lost revenues. The Rubia Optima line of lubricants is ideal for hauliers, thanks to the high-quality makeup, enhanced performance and protection, increased fuel economy and reduced emissions provided. These attributes are core to the entire Total Lubricants business, and even though the oil is produced for smaller engines as part of Total’s Quartz offerings for cars and vans, the aim remains the same. Which is to provide customers with superior vehicle efficiency. Total Quartz is a comprehensive range of lubricants suitable for not only cars but also light commercial vehicles with diesel engines especially Transit and Sprinter vans. Whether a workshop is looking for rationalisation or tailored products for specific vehicles, Total has the correct choice of lubricants for LCV service management. OEM partnerships are at the core of the Total Quartz range, being the preferred oil partner to 22 per cent of the UK’s car park. The knowledge from these close relationships is passed across into the light commercial vehicle oil range. With LCVs covering large distances each year, they need to be reliable to keep a business running. So, using Total Quartz is more important than ever. The Quartz range features Age Resistant Technology (ART) which fights against friction, corrosion and deposits within the engine. This reduces the chances of sludge build up, helping to maintain peak engine performance and increase fuel economy. The improved reliability and consumption combine to offer significant long-term savings for businesses. To help select the right Total Quartz products for your customers, Total provides all the detailed application information in an online tool, the Finol Which Oil App. This simple tool allows you to search by make and model of van, helping you select the right lubricant with confidence every time. Total Quartz is also available through industry cataloguing systems adopted by some of the big motor factor groups. JALTEST AND AGE LTD HAVE THE ANSWERS Independent workshops that have to repair and maintain a wide range of vehicles across a number of different brands are struggling to keep their diagnostic capabilities up to date. Jaltest, represented in Ireland by AGE Ltd., has the answers. The commercial vehicle industry in Ireland has seen dramatic changes in engine technology to improve vehicle performance and comply with legislation such as Euro 4, 5 or 6 over the past decade. AGE Ltd., represents the Jaltest range of diagnostic equipment in Ireland for trucks, buses, trailers. AGV vehicles and heavy plant. The Jaltest multi-brand diagnostic tool comes with feature rich software, that allows the tool to be used in the workshop or at the roadside. Jaltest software is constantly being updated to cater for the progressions within the vehicles coming to the marketplace or those already on the road. Innovation and ease of use are important factors in trying to help workshops get vehicles back on the road more quickly and
Jaltest contains a number of significant features that are directed at making it easier for the technician to use and improving effectiveness within the workshop. All tools come with an attractive, intuitive and functional user interface, which presents information in an easy to read format. This includes the ability to choose icon sets and even colours to help make the screen formats even more pleasant and productive. Jaltest software has been ergonomically adapted to suit touch screen devices and by creative design and clever use of the various buttons and icons it delivers a user-friendly experience for the technician. Typically, to make it easier for the user, the main software toolbar has buttons in place for shortcuts to any new applications. With just one click the technician can print, take a screenshot, utilise the virtual keyboard or access the help menu. Next to the main toolbar is the path that has been taken to the current screen and an easy means of retracing steps whenever it is needed. There are also many other links to elements such as number plate searches or a vehicle record that are useful within the working workshop environment. Trailer data sheet printout Programming the ECU requires parameters from the original manufacturer’s data sheet. A simple command with the Jaltest software will print the set of parameters in the same format as the original data sheet. When the data plate has been over
52
painted or damaged this is a very useful source of vital data.
Trouble shooting by symptoms When a fault is not detected by an ECU there will be no warning lights or DTC given and many diagnostics products would then leave the user without further guidance. Jaltest is different and offers a “Troubleshooting by Symptoms” mode of operation guiding the user towards a diagnosis and solution with searchable symptoms and step by step guided procedures. Electronic Test Module (ETM) The ETM is a facility that is unique to Jaltest and used to verify the electronic components on commercial vehicles. It is bought as a separate kit that links directly into software that is already present within the main Jaltest software. Within this first version, the Jaltest ETM tool covers a wide number of EBS brake modulators from Knorr and Wabco. In the past, modulators have often been changed when, if the verification process was available, it would not have been necessary and the workshop could have saved themselves and their customer time and money in finding the solution. Training All of the elements of the Jaltest package benefit from technical support and training through AGE Ltd. Training is carried out on-site where technicians can discover how they can improve their diagnostic skills and productivity within their own working environment. AGE Ltd says there are three key factors is buying a modern diagnostic product: the right unit, right technical support and right training. With the AGE Ltd / Jaltest combination workshops can be assured that all three elements are in place. Operators can be assured that a Jaltest diagnostic tool, with the right training and technical support will result in a guaranteed fix, first time at the lowest cost/ 3D Wheel alignment The importance of wheel alignment on modern trucks and buses in the context of keeping costs to a minimum cannot be over-stated. AGE Ltd., which represents wheel alignment specialists Manatec, has the answer. Mantec says its Jumbo 3D Super, which won an Innovation Award at Automechanika Frankfurt las year, is the world’s first 3D wheel aligner for multi axle trucks and buses, which is capable of performing run out compensation of all five axles in single shot, in just 51 seconds. Manatec reports that the Jumbo 3D Super recently received Michelin seal of approval, an accolade for which it is justifiably proud. The Jumbo 3D Super comes with a One Shot Run Out Compensation for all the five axles, which can be carried out by simply driving the vehicle. There is no necessity to jack up wheels. Hence, run out compensation of all five axles can be completed in just 51 seconds. Conventional alignment requires jacking up each axle to perform run out, which is a time consuming job for technicians and costly for the workshop. AGE Ltd also supplies air conditioning service equipment, the Autel and G Scan range of car diagnostics tools and runs training courses for F Gas certification. DELPHI TECHNOLOGIES HANDY SERVICE GUIDE Transport and fleet managers will understand the frustrations around having a vehicle off the road for service. Downtime means the potential for decreased efficiency and surprise costs. Delphi Technologies has created a handy service guide for workshop technicians that helps to diagnose faults with Common Rail (CR) systems, ensuring any problems with a vehicle are found and fixed, swiftly. Identify the fault code The first stage in identifying Common Rail faults is to interrogate the vehicle’s OBD. By using a quality all makes diagnostic tool
such as Delphi’s DS, technicians can identify the fault codes generated and then focus their attention on this area of the vehicle. Check the injectors If the OBD has generated a fuel injection system fault code, then check the injector’s functionality. Tools such as Delphi’s Sealed Rail Diagnostic Kit can be connected to the injectors,
preventing the need for a complete system removal and refit. It collects and measures back leakage flow from the injectors and indicates which injector may be faulty and in need of replacement. By replacing individual injectors rather than a whole set, garages can save both time and money. Check the Common Rail pump function Next, fit the Sealed Rail Kit directly onto the high-pressure outlet pipe from the pump and crank the engine to record pressure in the system. The Sealed Rail Kit displays the results digitally and if the figure differs from the specified pressure measurement for the vehicle application, the pump could be faulty. Confirm if a mechanical or electrical pump fault If the Common Rail pump is suspected of being faulty, use Delphi’s False Actuator Kit in conjunction with the Sealed Rail for further interrogation. This temporarily replaces the vehicle’s actuator to enable the pump to generate full system pressure. If the pump generates the correct pressure with the False Actuator in place, then the vehicle actuator is likely to be at fault and should be replaced. However, if the pressure is still below the required level, then the Common Rail pump may have a mechanical fault and should be repaired or replaced. Both kits are compatible with Delphi, Bosch, Denso and Continental systems. For more information call Tech 'n' Tools diagnostics Specialist Dave Molloy on 087 24 69 175 for more information.

NEW UNIVERSAL CARRIAGE FOR MAHA MOBILE COLUMN LIFTS The universal carriage on Maha's Columnlift series, which was introduced to the public at Automechanika Frankfurt for the first time in September, has met with an overwhelmingly positive response from trade visitors. The universal carriage, which will in future be incorporated into the standard range, has an unique flexibility in the market environment and is suitable for the support of vehicles with a tyre diameter between 550 mm and 1,500 mm up to a load of 7.5 tonne per column, including everything from cars and trucks to special vehicles such as light wheeled tanks. It is not only the 30 per cent greater support range compared with market competitors, which usually only offer 1,140 mm by default, that documents the quality of this product. The smoothness of the electromechanical spindle drive, combined with high efficiency, ease of movement and extremely low-maintenance ball screw, round off the benefits to the customer. As a sign of their confidence, Maha is issuing a 5-year warranty on the entire spindle drive. In contrast to many products by market competitors using an electrohydraulic drive, the electromechanical spindle drive offers the benefit and the security that users will never have to worry about issues such as hydraulic oil leakage or having to make a constant check or test, which also requires regular hydraulic oil changes. Unlike the electrohydraulic versions, the electromechanical drive installed by Maha does not contain pistons or cylinders extending upwards from the column, which may cause damage to the vehicle.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
HGV CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL FITMENT AND REMOVAL MADE EASY BY LASER TOOLS New to the Laser Tools’ HGV range is this clutch & flywheel jack (part number 7249), designed to remove, install and transport (in the lowered position) 14
inch and 15½ inch double-disc clutches and/or flywheel assemblies as fitted to HGV vehicles. Designed to be used when both removing and replacing these very heavy HGV clutch assemblies. When refitting, the clutch/flywheel assembly is built up onto the splined shaft and support saddle; the low profile of the jack and assembled clutch and the four smooth-action castors make it easy to move into position under the vehicle. The whole saddle/clutch/flywheel assembly is then rotated through 90 degrees and then jacked up into position for fitting. The smooth hydraulic mechanism makes this a very easy job and once at the correct height, the support saddle is fully adjustable to ensure that the clutch assembly lines up straight onto the engine. Two sizes of splined shaft are provided. For more information contact Tech 'n' Tools on 01 419 1611 or visit www.techntools.ie

NEW TORQUE WRENCH RANGE FROM LASER TOOLS If a nut or bolt is not tightened sufficiently it will eventually work loose and may even drop off resulting in damage or a dangerous situation. Conversely, if the nut or bolt is tightened
too much, it may either strip its thread, snap, or stretch the stud being fastened. A torque wrench is specifically designed to avoid both of these situations — it produces the correct amount of tension in the bolt necessary to hold the parts together without the danger of distorting the bolt, nut or the parts they are holding together. For higher ranges of torque settings, the torque wrenches used have to be strong and robust, as well as being accurate. This new range of torque wrenches from Laser Tools, available in Ireland from Tech'n'Tools, fits the bill. This new range is very well suited to heavy workshop use in both commercial vehicle and motor racing applications. There are four torque wrenches in the range: 1/2"-drive x 595mm length (part no: 7169), 3/4"-drive x 970mm length (part no: 7170), 3/4"-drive x 1150 length (part no:7171) and 1"-drive x 1250mm length (part no: 7172). The wrenches are dual scale, with a separate easy to read unit graduation and feature a locking ring to maintain the setting. They are all supplied with a calibration certificate. and reliable method of heating, which results in a cleaner work environment. The torque range for each wrench: The risk for damaging cables and such when heating with an open flame is • 7169: 1/2"-drive: 60 - 300Nm completely eliminated. Good regulating (44 – 221lb/ft) controls make it easier to achieve the • 7170: 3/4"-drive: 110 - 550Nm 81 – 405lb/ft) • 7171: 3/4"-drive: 150 - 750Nm (110 – 553lb/ft) • 7172: 1"-drive: 200 - 1000Nm (147 – 737lb/ft) — as used by Laser Tools Racing in the BTCC, for the centre wheel-retaining nuts on Aiden Moffat’s Mercedes-Benz A-Class, which are torqued to 750Nm.
