Keep Cosy

If It’s Good Enough For The Andes… Alpaca wool keeps Andean mountain-dwellers warm, so it can surely fend off a Devon winter. Hollow-cored alpaca fibres are excellent insulators and wick away moisture, so they’re both warming and cooling. The Old Kennels near Dunkeswell uses wool from their own alpacas to produce luxuriously soft blankets and warm-as-toast quilts. The blankets are spun at Coldharbour Mill in Cullompton and the quilts are hand-stitched to keep the fibres in place.

The new Gas Stove collection from Woodwarm Stoves is designed to spread warmth, light and heaps of hygge at the touch of a button. Running on either natural gas or LPG, the stoves are available in a choice of log or coal effect. Features include a convector option, which is ideal for circulating heat in a larger room, a built-in thermostat to ensure maximum efficiency, and a remote-control facility which means you can turn up the heat without having to leave the sofa! No chimney? No worries. Woodwarm offers a balanced flue option so that you can position your gas stove wherever suits. Woodwarm Stoves are hand-built in Devon to the highest standards. This collection has a smooth, sleek style, based on the best-selling Phoenix range with a large picture window. Choose from three models – the Phoenix, 3kW, 5kW or 7kW. Prices start at £1,560 (including VAT).

KITCHENS

Catch-all Kitchens Cooking, chatting, preparing and partying – more and more of us want to achieve all these things in one room. Lucy Baker-Kind goes in search of expert advice to create the perfect kitchen diner

28

KITCHENS

Painted kitchen with large dining area, by David Glover Furniture

T

he trend for multi-tasking kitchen diners is not waning – families want rooms where they can cook, eat, work and socialise together. But how can one room serve many different purposes? Robin Steer, Director of Compass Kitchens in Kingsbridge, has teamed up with Rhiannon Pitten, Design Architect at PS4 Ltd in Dartmouth, to offer their expert advice and to show that incorporating hard-working pieces can achieve a streamlined space. When planning a new kitchen diner, Robin suggests thinking about classic layouts – single and double galley kitchens with one or two runs of cabinets, L-shaped built into corners, and U-shaped kitchens with three sides so that everything is within easy reach. David Glover, from David Glover Furniture

in Barnstaple, suggests an island unit for dividing the space and providing extra storage. “They provide a more informal dining space for breakfast and quick meals. They needn’t just be a solid block either. There are some fantastic island designs out there now – we’ve made a few ourselves!” Rhiannon explains how the design and layout must reflect the way many of us are choosing to live in a multi-use space. “Be clever with the area and include sociable as well as functional layouts, she says. “Installing an induction hob within the island means you can prepare meals and chat at the same time without looking over your shoulder.” The appliances required in a kitchen need to be appropriate to an open-plan scheme, and it’s important to think about noise reduction and

Peninsular bar with integrated sink and feature light, by Compass Kitchens odour extraction. “While washing machines and dishwashers have had quiet noise facilities for a while, new advances in extractor fans means that they can become practically invisible in our kitchens. Integrated into units, and with a low-noise output, they become an essential non-invasive product, ideal for openplan layouts,” says Robin. David recommends downdraft extractors if budget allows, which are placed next to or behind hobs and extract steam downwards: “They’re great if you want a hob in your island units because they eliminate the need for anything overhead. However, bear in mind that extraction works best when vented outside, so you may need space under the floor to route the vents.” Robin suggests the Novy range of appliances, which offer an amazing array of cooker hoods to zip away smells, floating cloud-effect extractor fans attached to the ceiling or integrated pop-up technology at the

press of a button. Another consideration for the kitchen diner is keeping clutter to a minimum. “Larder cupboards hide gadgets, hot water taps replace the electric kettle, while utensils drawers and pots and pans stored next to the hob are all ways to hide everyday clutter,” advises Robin. “Bread drawers, vegetable air drawers and tea towel rods (attached to the internals of the sink unit) are good solutions to everyday items that need to be stored correctly, while still being accessible.” “Sight lines from key viewpoints and entrances should be kept clear so the room feels open and spacious,” adds Rhiannon. The colours and materials used can either flow between the kitchen and dining areas to bring cohesion to the scheme, or be used to differentiate. David suggests using colour as an easy way to distinguish spaces and it needn’t be a bold contrast. “Even subtle colour changes can create different zones in large spaces.” > 31

KITCHENS

Island unit with integrated wine fridge and an eating area, by Compass Kitchens “Have a central hero piece in the dining area to focus on – candles on the table, a gallery picture wall to make the space intimate, or introduce a large feature light over the dining table,” recommends Rhiannon. Another consideration is flooring. David believes smaller spaces benefit from the same flooring throughout, otherwise you risk the space becoming too visually disjointed. “Make the spaces individual by introducing soft furnishings and rugs. On trend at the moment are faux giant plants – palms and cactus are good in urns and planters to softly divide the space,” suggests Rhiannon. Clever lighting plays a key role in separating the different zones. Automated lighting and systems can dramatically change the mood in different areas, such as task lighting in the kitchen space that can be dimmed when you want the dining area to become the main focus. “Look at feature lights over an island and glow lighting above wall units,” suggests Rhiannon.

David agrees on functional, hidden task lighting for the kitchen and more decorative pendant lighting for dining spaces to create a relaxed, cosy atmosphere. “Make sure you have them on different switches so you can dim or turn off the lights in the kitchen while you eat,” he says. “Finally, your choice of furniture and upholstery can add warmth and softness to your dining space, in comparison to the typically harder lines and surfaces in a kitchen,” says David. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need an enormous room to create an open-plan kitchen diner. Robin believes it can be achieved in most spaces, regardless of size. “We recently used clever design in a property where space was at a premium. We incorporated secret double drawers, hidden rubbish bins and a hide board in the same material as the countertop specialist resin – the board simply pops over the sink and can double up as a chopping board,” he explains. 32

or some, a bathroom is a sanctuary, somewhere to relax among the bubbles. For others, it’s a functional space to shower in and go. In a family, it’s where teenagers constantly bicker about who’s been in there the longest. Whichever way you use your bathroom, the floor you choose will impact on its ambience; do you want to make a statement with colour and pattern, or opt for longevity with a neutral tile and simple design? Some of us still languish under the misconception that a tile has to be square. According to Louisa Morgan from Mandarin Stone in Exeter, their ‘go-to’ tile for decades has been the traditional subway tile – think New York and Paris Metro. “But,” says Louisa, “standard subways have turned longer and leaner – I like to call them brickettes.” She suggests laying them in a herringbone pattern.

“Or, for a more contemporary feel, you can lay brick tiles vertically and stack in straight lines.” You can also consider laying tiles in a basket weave or chevron pattern – an inspired way to create your own look. Other patterns include windmill, perfect for borders; pinwheel, ideal for contrasting tiles; and cobblestone for a more conventional style. Straight lines might make installing tiles simpler but there are more unusual shapes coming in, such as triangles and stars. “It’s not all about geometric though,” adds Louisa, “as softer shapes like scallops and circles create a more feminine feel.” Keep it natural with slate. It adds elegance to a bathroom and offers the twin benefits of being luxurious and durable, so you won’t have to choose between fashion and practicality. Ardosia Slate, near Barnstaple, is the place to go for Brazilian slate tiles, which come in > 37

a variety of sizes with options of graphite for a darker finish and cinza for a lighter, more even flooring. The tiles are available in a riven or hand-polished surface. Slate tiles need to be sealed after they are laid, and after that, maintenance is minimal. “If you’re fortunate enough to have underfloor heating in your bathroom,” says MD Steve Pugsley, “slate is the ideal medium for storing and transferring the heat supplied by wet or electrical UFH.” Ardosia also supplies shower trays machined from the same, but thicker, slate, to allow a fully integrated floor. Going thin is not a command to diet, but a reference to Techlam, the latest innovation in large porcelain tiles. These are the thinnest tiles yet at just 3mm to 5mm, and with such a low profile, they are perfect to lay over existing tiles, making it easier to update your style. Exeter’s La Fabrico has exclusivity with Techlam in the region, and Sales Director Paul Greenslade says it’s proving immensely popular with clients moving from London to coastal havens like Dartmouth and Salcombe. Among

the designs are the stunning ‘Steel’ collection, which promises the cold beauty of steel with the incredible realism of metallic nuances, and ‘Deco’, a selection of on-trend materials that embody elegance and sophistication. Paul also asserts that decorative tiles are still popular among his customers. “In bathrooms, a floor with a panel of decorative tiles can make a real feature,” he explains. By using decorative tiles that either complement or contrast the main floor tile, a hitherto dull floor can spring to life – almost literally, as some decorative tiles incorporate a raised feel for a 3D effect. Decorative tiles are often associated with traditional bathrooms and can add a sense of nostalgia but there are also plenty of edgier designs. Wood-effect tiles are made by using digital printing technology to recreate almost any wood you can think of. On a practical note, these tiles are more durable than most real wood floors, as they don’t soak up moisture, which can cause wood to warp and crack. > > Choose from gorgeous natural looking hickory, 39

Vision Installs’ tiles have a polished porcelain marble-look or try an aged effect that appears to show the ravages of time. Director Mark Fowdon from Studio One in Plymouth says everyone loves this style. He works closely with Italian manufacturer Atlas Concorde to offer a wide range of wood-effect tiles, as well as quirky ‘textile look’ tiles (porcelain stoneware inspired by elegant fabrics). Want the look of marble without the price tag? “Large tiles in polished porcelain can give the impression of marble, with the added benefit of being resistant to staining,” says Ross Pollard from Exeter-based Vision Installs. Porcelain tiles have a lower water absorption rate than marble, are hardwearing, don’t chip easily, and partner well with underfloor heating. Aesthetically, marble may give the sensation of opulence and luxury, but it can be slippery when wet. The bathroom is definitely one room where you can express your individual taste. But remember, your choice of tile can make or break your bathroom, so choose wisely!

CHRISTMAS TREES

Fir or Fake? Festive firs and Noel non-drops? Bogus branches and spurious sprigs? Lucy Baker-Kind does some digging on the choice of Christmas trees

CHRISTMAS TREES

veryone loves a Christmas tree, but are you going sprightly spruce or faux fir? When only the real deal will do, there are decisions to be made. Cheryl Chadwick, from Avon Mill Garden Centre in Loddiswell, advises choosing your tree carefully and looking after it well, to ensure it stays looking its best throughout the festive season. “The fresher your tree, the better it will hold its needles, so all of our trees are sourced as close to home as possible – the closest grown just up the road and all from within the West Country,” she says. How about starting a new festive

family tradition and going to choose your own tree while it is still in the ground? John Cockram Christmas Trees, based in Chulmleigh (with its sister company Horwood Christmas Tree Farm in Horwood) have a Choose and Cut service, to offer their customers the freshest possible. “We grow a wide variety of trees across our plantations in Devon. We ensure our crops are sustainable and do not cause damage to the local wildlife. For every tree that is sold, another is planted in its place,” explains John. Keep your tree outside, preferably standing in water, until it is needed and then, if possible,

place it in a cool spot indoors and definitely away from any direct heat source, such as a wood burning stove or radiator. “It helps to cut a slice off the base of the trunk – this opens up the pores, which allows the tree to take up water,” adds Cheryl. Use a water-holding stand or bucket and keep the water topped up daily. Helen Bowker runs Cotley Farm Christmas Trees in Whimple, near Exeter, and offers trees from 2ft grown in a pot, 4–5ft potted, and cut tree sizes from 4ft–20ft. “If you allow the water level to drop below the fresh cut, a new seal will form over the stem. Remember, trees are very thirsty!” she says. >

CHRISTMAS TREES

John grows mainly Nordman Fir and Norway Spruce varieties: “Firs take longer to grow and retain their needles well. Spruces lose their needles more easily but grow faster, which makes them a cheaper alternative.” The Norway Spruce is the traditional Christmas tree, with its long, shiny, dark green needles and strong scent. “They may drop their needles if too warm and not in water, but you get a lot of tree for your money and they smell wonderful. If freshly cut they are great value,” says Cheryl. Another option is the Blue Spruce, which has a blue tinge, stiff needles and strong branches. If longevity is important, nondrop varieties will hold on to their needles for longer. Try a Nobel Fir – it has silvery foliage, a lovely scent, and has a wide base with tiered branches, which is ideal for showing off decorations. “In my opinion, the Nobel Fir is the most needle-fast variety,” says Cheryl. The most popular non-drop tree in the UK is the Nordman Fir. It has dark green foliage with lots of branches, but is not as scented as some other trees. “It is a wider shaped tree, retaining its needles well. It’s popular, but not so suited to those with limited space in their homes,” says John. The Fraser Fir, with its green needles, silvery underside and beautiful scent, tends to be slimmer and narrower at the base, which is a better option if space is at a premium. John advises to think carefully about the size you need: “We offer measuring sticks, as seeing a tree in a large open field can be deceiving. We have had trees returned to us before because customers have bought trees that are 3ft taller than their living room ceiling!”

If a real tree is not practical, then the range of artificial trees on the market should offer a solution. Many of them come pre-lit, so just add a few decorations if required, and that’s it – job done! For a fake tree that closely resembles a real one, try the John Lewis Snowy Pop-Up Pre-Lit Christmas Tree (above), a 6ft artificial Christmas tree, pre-lit with 200 warm white LEDs This John Lewis Outdoor Twig Tree (right), is available in white, and is pre-lit with ice white LEDs. Deliberately understated, it resembles a bare pine, and would look at home placed among some real trees in the garden

Forever Furniture Devon Home talks to Nigel and Jackie Plowman from Chunky Monkey in Exwick about their successful reclaimed furniture business

C

hunky Monkey, a bespoke furniture business in Exwick, has been running since 2008. Specialising in quality furniture that is exclusively made of reclaimed and sustainably sourced timber, every piece is handmade using traditional techniques. As owner Jackie Plowman describes: “We produce pieces that are rustic, reclaimed and sustainable. We don’t believe in a disposable culture; our aim is to create forever furniture.” She adds: “The vintage wood that is used in the reclaimed range is as individual as we are, with its natural imperfections, its own unique and beautiful grain, and its evidence of historic use.” The company sells a range of indoor and outdoor furniture. “As we move

into the winter months we start to see an increase in orders from our bed and dining range,” says Jackie. “Every piece we make takes into account the requests of our customers.” Owner Nigel Plowman worked for over 20 years in the demolition and reclamation industry, so the couple has many local contacts when it comes to sourcing timber. He says: “Recently, we reclaimed 70-year-old Canadian pine wood from the Riviera Bay Holiday Park in Brixham. We have also received timber from Torquay’s Princess Pier.” In terms of Devon-based projects that Chunky Monkey has worked on, Nigel adds: “We recently completed a full refurbishment of The Station in Dartmouth. We helped design and renovate the whole interior of the building. The refurb has the

individuality that the owner was after, but really showcases Chunky Monkey’s style. It is now called the Platform 1 Champagne Bar & Restaurant.” Nigel concludes: “We love a challenge and we never say a project is impossible. People often come to us with an idea that we translate into a drawing, and then into a finished item. Some customers turn up with a magazine cutting for us to work from, and sometimes there’s a problem that needs solving. We can visit people’s properties to assess installation issues. This gives us the chance to get a better idea of the commission and suggest alterations that would improve the final piece – these can range from a fitted kitchen to a standard bed.” chunkymonkeyfurniture.co.uk

Grey: here to stay? Trends come and go, but grey is the neutral shade that’s still popular, writes Nicole de Villier, Shop Floor Manager, Frames and Boxes and Gallery Fab in Newton Abbot

S

tephen and Molly Robertson – owners for more than 20 years of Newton Abbot’s Frames and Boxes (FAB) – and their team have seen many trends come and go. Primaries, pastels, animal prints and bling have taken a front seat this year. Bold is back. Frames and Boxes and its art gallery – aptly named Gallery Fab – have embraced this resurgence of colour with zeal. And within works of art, the framing of these pieces, and all the accents of home décor, there has been one neutral that stands above the rest this year; grey. Warm greys soften, adding nostalgia and depth. Sam Toft’s work seems to capture the wonderful absurdity of everyday life, contrasting almost drab backgrounds against brightly coloured narratives. There is a real sense of carpe diem worked

through this juxtaposition, as seen in A Midsummer Dip, which playfully reminisce happy times. In Debbie Boon’s Sea Horses, the shading and shadows in the form of her horses emphasise the movement and bring them to life, while a dusky coloured frame highlights the palette. Cool greys offer a sense of intimacy and peace. Jo Quigley’s Winter Light portrays a busy London area, and yet the predominant sense of this moment is personal and calming. This is created by lighting and composition, and encouraged with a pale grey mount. Somehow, the idea of walking through a bustling area like this is suddenly romanticised. When placed against strong hues, greys set an atmosphere that allows strength in tones to glow. Original pieces by Jean Picton, like Sunshine, often use a grey backing to highlight the colour and glitter in her works. Maybe you are hunting for that perfect piece to set off a contemporary room? Perhaps you’ve found a piece of art that speaks to you and are in need of framing to make it work in an already-decorated space? Or it could be that you’re in search of accents for a new home? A touch of grey is certainly the way. And Frames and Boxes, with Gallery Fab’s team, are here to offer the service, knowledge and an on-trend selection that every modern homemaker is looking for. galleryfab.co.uk 50
