BRONNIE ROCKS THE SCHOOL

from the Executive Headteacher

Happy New Year and welcome back to the new term. The first week back coincided with the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus. This offers some synergy with the start of a new year and the chance to begin with good intentions and fresh ambition. With those thoughts of new beginnings, we welcome new additions to the Sacred Heart family, Mr Monan and Mr Wilson.

Award-winning singer-songwriter Bronnie rocked the school and delivered an important message to Year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 pupils. Bronnie – who hit the headlines when she won American TV and radio star Ryan Seacrest’s Cover Song Contest – delivered a high-energy performance that included her chart-topping hit, Colour Looks Good On You.

Mr Monan is an assistant headteacher with responsibility for behaviour and safeguarding. Mr Wilson joins us from the NPCAT central team, to support our pastoral work. Both members of staff offer a great deal of experience and will enhance our team at Sacred Heart.

She then led a Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) session about mental health.

Our pupils have come back into the first few weeks of term and taken the testing and new restrictions in their stride, showing resilience and determination in lessons.

She discussed causes of mental health problems, such as stress at school and relationships, who to turn to for help and the importance of speaking up.

God bless Michael Burns Executive headteacher

Having gone through her own mental health struggles as well as suffering from bullying and body image issues, Bronnie was the perfect advocate to deliver such a positive message.

Bronnie also spoke about the stresses of the last year during the pandemic, the sense of loss we might all have felt and how we can better handle the unpredictability and hardships of life. She talked about the link between

mental health and body image, which has become a real issue for younger people and is often linked to social media use. She also discussed the importance of treating each other fairly, why diversity should be celebrated, what to do if you’re being discriminated against and why it is wrong to discriminate against other people. Towards the end of the presentation, pupils were given the opportunity to ask Bronnie their own questions about mental health, body image and resilience. It was wonderful to see our pupils openly discussing such important issues and hearing these important messages from someone who isn’t a parent or a teacher. Bronnie’s performance was as memorable as the talk and was rewarded with some impressive dance moves – especially from our year 7 pupils! sacredheart.npcat.org.uk

Charlie captains county to historic final appearance Charlie R captained Cleveland Schools U16s to a historic first-ever English Schools’ FA InterCounty Cup final appearance. A strong Kent team ran out 3-1 winners in the big match, which was screened live on YouTube. Having impressed with his performances throughout the competition, Charlie took part in England Schoolboys’ U16 trials including a North v South showdown at the National Sports Centre in Lilleshall. Charlie didn’t make the final cut this time but it was a tremendous honour to get so far. He is now part of the Hartlepool United youth set-up, studying engineering alongside his training programme.

Hard work pays off on mock results day

Our Year 11 pupils are studying hard to give themselves the best possible chance of future success, completing coursework and revising for examinations and stage tests.

Year 11 pupils Ryan M and Harvey A each won a pair of tickets to a Boro match after completing 20 hours of enterprise training.

Tensions were high when each student was handed an envelope containing their mock exam results, but the day ended with lots of smiles on show.

They have been taking part in the Enterprise Short Course, which accredits up to 60 hours of enterprise activity and is endorsed by the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs.

Head of Year 11 Mrs Doyle could not have been more pleased with their efforts.

Learners log in to complete challenges and tutors can leave feedback.

“‘They have worked so hard and they completely deserve all their success,” she said. Well done Year 11, keep it up!

Sporting success as competitions return Sacred Heart pupils have enjoyed being back in action with the return of inter-school sport. Standout results include our Year 8 footballers’ 5-2 victory at Trinity Catholic College in the ESFA U13 Cup, with Austin Hodgson scoring a hat-trick. Thomas C, Joey T, Zander G, Max S and Bailey S all qualified for the Tees Valley cross-country competition, while the Year 11 girls’ netball team returned from the Redcar and Cleveland netball tournament with silver medals.

STAFF GATHER TO PRAY AND REFLECT

Staff gathered at the end of a busy term to reflect and take time to be as one community. The very best of luck to Issy G, from Year 9, who has qualified to represent Cleveland County at February’s InterCounty Cross-Country championships by finishing 15th at the County Schools Cross-Country Championships at Stewart Park. Emelia R (Year 11) and Elisha R (Year 10) also took part after qualifying from the Redcar and Cleveland championships alongside Issy.

Mrs O’Brien led a thoughtprovoking liturgy we took the opportunity to say goodbye to colleagues including SENDCo Abbie White and senior assistant headteacher Phil Stevenson. We thank them for all they have done and wish them well. The liturgy concluded with refreshments and time for the staff to gather and rejoice.
