2013 INBA Balance Auckland Natural Classic Not the biggest show of the year but the quality of the contestants more than compensated for this. With some exciting new faces and the recent relaxing of the rules to allow contestants to enter more than one Class of competition, in line with the INBA International rules, we saw some interesting comparisons.

upper and lower body which allowed her to take first place just ahead of Kirsten. Michelle Montague made her second appearance when she contested the Novice Women Bodybuilding Class with another first time contestant Tracey Donovan. Michelle was much taller than Tracey and matched for size. However Tracey displayed better condition and definition and this won more favour with the Judges who scored her in first place ahead of Michelle.

Also to bring our competition in line with INBA International there was a change in thenaming of the Classes of Competition to conform with their names. What we in NABBA know as “Figure” becomes “Physique” and what we know as “Physique” becomes “Bodybuilding”. Another Class is named “International Figure” which is judged similar to the IFBB “Figure” Class. Fitness Model was one of the Classes which was disappointing in terms of support. However Shannon Farge compensated by showing the audience a professional presentation and looked stunning in each of the three rounds of competition, Bikini, Sports Theme and Evening Wear. I hope that she has shown prospective contestants the potential of this Class and more will compete in our next show in Taupo. Shannon Farge looked great in all three rounds of the Fitness

Joy Crockett took the Senior Womens 50+ Bodybuilding title displaying some good upper body muscularity. Joy is a long time enthusiastic supporter of Bodybuilding and it is great to see her still improving while competing in the Senior Classes.

Michelle Montague made a good impression in her first competition

A great contest in the Novice Men Short Class with Finau Faofua up against the younger Hayden Eric. Hayden has improved immensley since we last saw him onstage and he matched Finau in almost every department. Quads, shoulders, chest, symmetry they were very close and it was Model competition only when they turned with their backs to the Judges that the Matamata’s Michelle Montague was the only Teenage contestant in the event but she had decided to make the most of her first appearance difference became apparent. Both men had well developed backs but Hayden, being taller, onstage by also entering several other Classes of competition. Her first appearance was in had a longer torso and could not quite match the thicker muscularity that Finau displayed in his middle and lower back. A great contest between two good Novice contestants. the Shape Class where she performed well but won unopposed. The new Figure International Class featured two well conditioned ladies who were very competitive. This Class should appeal to those who do not like to do a posing routine to music. More emphasis is placed on symmetry and presentation as contestants are judged on their ‘stage walk’ and four turn symmetry comparisons. Both Kirsten Nelson and Kathy Burnell had excellent presentation and preparation and it was very close in the symmetry round also. Kirsten had excellent size and separation in the lower body that she could not quite match in her upper torso. Kathy also had good size, perhaps not so much separation in the muscle groups but more uniformity between

Una Taufa came in lean and with an impressive double bicep pose to take the Masters Class. In the Novice Men Tall Class the competition was just as fierce with the taller Alma Clayton fighting off the challenge for this title from Junior Batista and Kyle Murray. Kyle has a lean proportionate physique with clean lines and good muscularity but Alma had the edge with more shoulder width and good quad definition and separation. Junior, a native of Brazil, was competing for the first time in New Zealand and carried some good muscularity on his

Only time will tell but I’m betting on Stan! As they came on stage on this day, however, Stan had still a way to go to match Damion’s condition. Although improved in the two weeks since the NABBA Auckland show his legs particularly lacked the definition that Damion displayed although his upper body looked superior in shape and size. Would this be enough? The Judges ruled “No” and Damion progressed to the Overall competition.

frame. However he could not match the superior symmetry that Alma displayed. The Judges came down in favour of Alma with Kyle in second spot ahead of Junior. The Womens Novice Physique Class saw Trinity Lawrence gain an unanimous first place from the Judges. Trinity’s extra

muscularity and separation gave her the edge in the Judges eyes. It was a much closer margin between Tracey Donovan and Lyween Crampton for second place was and Tracey gained a couple of second placings from the Judges with some good definition but not quite able to edge out Lyween from second place just two points ahead. Stan Tautalanoa and Damion Alene duked it out for the Open Men Short tile. Damion looking to make this event a three in a row Overall tile run, but first he had to win this

The sharp definition of Ruth Naidoo gained her the Open Womens Physique title with Kathy Burnell securing second place ahead of Kirsten Nelson.

In the Novice Men Short Class Finau Faofua and Hayden Eric made it a good competition.

The Open Men Tall Class was won by Christchurch’s John McCormick who outmuscled Una Taufa in second place. Talia Vaka had the size and shape to take third

place ahead of Potello Stowers. The recipients of the Muscle Imaging Awards for Best Presentation went to Lyween Crampton and Alma Clayton for some excellent posing routines. The Overall Womens Physique and Bodybuilding titles went to Ruth Naidoo with the Men’s title going to the sharp Damion Naidoo.

Trinity Lawrence displayed a proportionate Physique with good muscularity to clinch the Womens Novice Physique Class

Best Presentation Awards Alma Clayton and Lyween Crampton

The Open Mens Class was also very competitive. Una Taufa 2nd. John McCormick 1st, Talia Vaka 3rd, Potello Stowers 4th

IMPORTANT NOTICE If there is one thing I dislike about the sport of Bodybuilding is the amount of back biting and politics that seems prevalent amongst some of those who participate or follow it. Usually I ignore or disregard that which comes to my attention as being unworthy to give it any credibility but one rumour that has been brought to my attention on more than a few occasions recently has prompted me to make this statement. I regard Johanna Mountfort as one of the best female physiques that New Zealand has produced and her accomplishments in the sport speaks for themselves. When competing in the INBA competition she won many titles both in New Zealand and Australia. At no time did Johanna produce a positive test for performance enhancing substances and was never requested to return any prizes or trophies for this or any other reason. At no time did I, or any of my officials, exchange, tamper or otherwise interfere with any samples taken for the purpose of drug testing.

This is a “Must Have” for every Personal Trainer and Nutritionist (and Athlete) Simple to operate Keep an accurate track of your progress These Retail for up to $70.00

For the people who spread such rumours and innuendo I have nothing but contempt. It may be galling for such people to admit that hard work and dedication combined with strict adherance to good nutrition can, over a period of time, produce the standard of physique that they cannot hope to attain even with the assistance of performance enhancing substances. Johanna is an person who is an inspiration for those many natural, drug free athletes who choose to follow our sport with repect for their bodies. Johanna coaches and trains athletes in many sports apart from Bodybuilding. Her background in dance has assisted her to develop some outstanding routines and she advises many prospective bodybuilding contestants how to pose and display their physiques to their best advantage. It is a testament to her professionalism that she can do all this as well as bring up a young family with the help of her husband. May she long be an influence in our sport.

Food For Champions It’s no wonder that Masters Champion Nigel Randell, more often than not, has a smile on his face. Well who wouldn’t with a wife as foxy as Donna. However, Donna is more than just a pretty face, being a Bodybuilding Figure Champion in her own right as well as being a great cook. As they say, “the way to a mans heart is through his stomach” so Nigel has a lot to smile about. We asked Donna for one of her secret recipes to share with us so she sent us this one for these tasty treats.

Fitness Profile

Shannon Farge Fitness Junkie This editions ‘Fitness Profile’ features someone who I have seen on stage competing at various Bodybuilding events recently. Not in the full on muscle building classes but in the ‘Fitness” and “Sports Model” classes. Her cheerfull and positive attitude intrigued me and after talking to her at several of these events I came to realise that there was a lot more to Shannon than just a pretty face. I was amazed at the amount of competitions that she was participating in, most a lot more challenging than walking the boards at a bodybuilding show. I’ll let Shannon tell you in her own words how she became to be a real ‘Fitness Junkie’.

Always happy when the adrenaline kicks in “I’ve always been interested in sports and fitness since I was

very young, but never as full on and as seriously as I have been these past two and a half years. My Mum is a Fitness Instructor & Personal Trainer and used to be an Aerobics Instructor at Feel Great in Thames, so the interest in fitness has always kind of rubbed off on me from Mum. My Mum has been really inspiring!

I am my own coach! I have learnt a lot along the way from reading articles in sports magazines and on websites and talking to various experienced and inspiring friends/people I meet about training ideas, particularly with running and cycling. I’ve just recently stepped up to Masters Swimming Training at Massey Park, it’s much harder and more intense than SwimFit (suddenly finding myself doing between 3.5km-4km each training session without even realising it!) I’m really enjoying the challenge and our coach Jane is excellent. I’ve come a long way with my swimming since only just starting swimming at the beginning of last year.

Some times it’s better on a bike.

I was lucky enough to win a Trip to the 2013 Noosa Triathlon on Sunday 3rd November at Race One of the Panasonic People’s Series which is super exciting! This is the biggest prize I’ve ever won and will be my biggest challenge so far! The Noosa Triathlon & Multi Sport Festival is a huge sporting festival held every year! The last South Island qualifier for the NABBA New Zealand National Bodybuilding Championships

Editors note: I think that all competitors will find this article interesting. For those who aspire to representing New Zealand on the International stage it gives an insight of the experience from a rookie’s perspective and can give them an idea of what to expect when you travel overseas to compete. You can share Susans excitement of the entire experience. Enjoy. I wanted to take a moment to share with you the true delight (and dream come true) that it was to both qualify, and compete in the NABBA/ NAC Worlds competition! The moment I received the letter that invited me to compete in Worlds in North Cyprus I was more than overjoyed and overwhelmed. You might have guessed (or already know) that competing in regional competitions in itself is a real commitment of dedication and determination, but it is indeed incredibly rewarding and an experience that is unrivaled! Then taking that up a notch: to the excitement and new challenges that the international stage might bring…. well that is another story in itself! A crucial aspect of any competition plan is knowing what is happening, what to expect, and to be able to expect the unexpected! When you are planning a trip halfway around the world, you can imagine that there are quite a few differences in competition preparation! For this I am so glad that there was such a team spirit! The team was briefed via email, since we all were coming from different regions: Trudy from Gisbourne, Maureen and Jim from Palmerston North, Karl from Auckland, and me from Dunedin. There was an official hotel, the option to book onto the same team flight, details of transfers to and from the airport, even a complete comprehensive

team a new ON shaker!

That night, (you know how it is) I don’t think I slept more than 2 hours: I was far too excited and I kept going through my posing in my head. I was thinking of all the awesome advice that Jim and my fellow team mates had imparted on me and imagined what the day would be like! The excitement of the whole process and thinking about how much fun it had been to spend the last few days before stepping on the Maureen Thomas took The evening before the fifth place in the international stage with such competition was a lot of fun Figure 35+ Class amazing people with the other NZ athletes: at an amazing after Jim had taken us around the luxury coveted vacation destination, convention centre venue which was set up all as part and parcel of the for the show (with over 1000 seats to experience! spectate might I add!), we had a bit of a team photo shoot on the beach which was I woke up before my alarm at the front of the hotel. That night we had went off and get ready. I was a bit of a tan party and diffused our nerves going to be first up in the show, over some wine and sharing stories about and Maureen, Trudy and Karl the NABBA competitions which we had were evenly spaced competed in all around NZ. throughout the day show. Even After registering at the athelete check in, I took a bit of time to see a few of the compeitiors who were filtering in to register. Since there was a slot of 8 hours to register, some athletes that had to ‘make weight’ were sent away for a few hours to do a walk or have a sauna! There really were some incrediable athletes and I just wanted to get a picture of ALL of them! Even more neat was that at the venue, there was the distributer for Optimum Nutrition for the Cyprus region! Him and his team gave me a big hug and said good luck for the competition…. and gave each of the NZ

their stand in order to watch the class. Even more heartwarming was how helpful and endearing and encouraging each of the NZ athletes were towards each other: not to mention competitors from other countries who could not speak or understand English! It really was a different ‘world’ competing with many different nationalities and cultures. But the really neat thing was that as different as we all were, we were all going about doing the same kinds of things: dream tanning, carb loading and supporting each other!

memories that seem so unbelievable that I ask myself whether it was actually all a dream. But all I need to do is look at my medal from the World stage to remind me! I have made really great friends who I cannot wait to catch up with at the next NABBA event! I have learned so much as a result, and know that all of the things that I have ‘picked up’ as a result of competing internationally will certainly up my game for competing and improving my physique in general. I mean, how often do you get the opportunity to spend time as a team with others who are competing in the last few days before a competition, and see everything jump into action ‘first hand’!? To add to this: the fantastic couple who had lent me an adapter picked us up and took us out to the best Turkish kebab place in town, followed by dessert at a place where the owner had flown all the way to New York to learn how to make cheesecakes!

What blows my mind even more is the camaraderie shown…. all of these people (except Jim) I had met only a few days before. Yet we all were getting along like family, and there was no request too big or too small: in fact many things (like a touch up of dream tan here, or a rice cracker there) was already Everything about my experience at Worlds offered and initiated before the was unrivaled and only makes me more words even needed to be determined to qualify again! uttered! As per usual for the NABBA Auckland Championships an enthusiastic sell out audience filled Glenfield Colleges Kaipatiki Theatre to encourage and support their friends on stage. With over 70 athletes on stage they had a lot to cheer about.

2013 Optimum NABBA Auckland Bodybuilding Championships

The Shape Class commenced the show and gave the Judges an indication that they were going to have to make some tough decisions sorting the 14 attractive ladies in this Class into the correct order. 2012 National Shape Champion Susan Baxter was in this field as well at some of the contestants from the recent NABBA Rebecca Counties Manukau Nisbett show. Runner-up Rebecca Nisbet was keen to improve on this placing as was Jammie-Lea Wilson and Lauren Fincham. The Judges needed quite a few comparison call outs in the symmetrical and compulsory round which was appreciated by the audience. Susan Baxter performed a routine which earned her the

Susan took third place ahead of an improved JammieLea Wilson with Lisa Lethbridge claiming fifth place just ahead of Nicola Noble.

The Novice Figure Class saw Tash Bartlett and Victoria Cameron in contention for the title. Tash was a shade more muscular than the taller Victoria and, although both ladies had a share of the Judges first votes, this could have been the deciding feature. Melissa Alley managed to garner some second place votes but had to settle for third place ahead of Katie Hales. After the posing it was Denver that the Judges Kurt Brunton favoured by a greater majority than was expected. Taylor had to settle for second Martin Thornycroft took the Masters place with fewer first placings with Andre Athletic title unopposed. Smith relegating Talia Vaka into fourth place. Andrew Murray and Ali Alkadhi were neck and neck in the Open Athletic Class. Andrew always comes in well prepared and displays a well proportioned physique with some excellent posing.
