Hyundai Palisade is practically perfect By Glenn Rosen, Advertising Writer
T
ake a nice-looking sport utility vehicle – let’s say the Hyundai Palisade – and then turn it up to 11. If you’re a fan of the movie This is Spinal Tap, you’ll know that turning something up to 11 is basically saying to take the best of something and then exceed those expectations even more. The reason for the betterthan-best analogy was the 2021 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy, the all-new top-of-the-line model that combines luxury and style with a price that may amaze the luxury vehicle buyer. There are
four Palisade trim levels – the SE, SEL, Limited and Calligraphy, and naturally most people would imagine the top dog would cost $60,000, $70,000 or more. After all, luxury doesn’t come cheap. Well, the Calligraphy has a base price of $47,750, and with only optional carpeted floor mats and a destination charge, the 2021 test vehicle topped out at $49,070. With similar features to SUVs made by Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and other luxury manufacturers, that’s a price that many buyers may be able to live with.
The Palisade is a good-sized vehicle, but several of the folks that wanted to take a closer look were somewhat amazed that there were three rows inside. You can fit eight passengers with the right type of seating, although the black test vehicle with black interior came with captain’s chairs for a second row, so it maxed out at seven. Access to the third row was simple, as only a touch of a button was required to move the second-row chair forward. Sitting in the third row, however, would most likely be left to kids rather than full-grown adults; two adults would have been OK back there, but not three. The arrival of the Palisade Calligraphy happened during a holiday week, and since a socially distanced family gathering was planned (later cancelled when we came to our senses), it required buying a couple tables, eight chairs and a few other items for an outside holiday dinner. With the second and third rows folded down, the 86.4 cubic feet of space provided plenty of room. Pushing a couple of buttons to power lower and raise the third row made it even easier. The luxury is plentiful
throughout the Palisade Calligraphy, such as quilted leather seats and door surfaces, a perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a dual sunroof, wireless charging, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, and on and on. There are far too many amenities to list here; check the Hyundai website for more information. All Palisades feature a 291-horsepower 3.8-liter V-6 engine matched up with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Except for a slight hesitation when accelerating, the Palisade is good to go mechanically, with brakes, turning and the lack of noise all combining for a pleasant ride. Fuel economy ratings for the Palisade are 19/24 mpg in city/highway driving; not something to write home about, but decent enough for this size vehicle. The Palisade has received numerous honors, including the Calligraphy being named the Mid-Size SUV of Texas by the 2020 Texas Auto Writers Association. No matter which trim you prefer, the Palisade is worth a closer look.

at the inside edge of the tire pushes against the inside of the wheel rim. That bead should seal airtight. If the wheel gets bent, for instance, from driving through a pothole the size of Saskatchewan, that can create space between the tire’s bead and the rim and allow air to seep out. And it could leak only under certain conditions, like when the tire flexes a particular way over bumps or on turns or when it’s parked in a specific position. Or the metal wheel itself can corrode over many years and make it impossible to create a tight seal against the rubber bead. The third way tires tend to leak is from the valve stem. There’s a device called

They’ll fill your tire, take that wheel off the car and put it in a vat of water. It may take a little time, but if there’s air coming out, they’ll see the air bubbles and figure out where it’s coming from. If they don’t see air coming out, it’s possible that in order for the leak to occur, the weight of the car has to be on the tire. If it won’t leak for them in the water, then I’d have them remove the tire from the wheel, clean up the inside of the rim in case there’s rust there, apply

2021 Nissan Kicks: same value, more friendly
T
he cheap and cheerful end of the SUV showroom is getting a lot of attention from automakers as buyers continue to eschew subcompact hatchbacks and sedans in favor of the slightly larger, slightly taller SUV-style models. Tall crossovers like the Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Venue and Honda HR-V are replacing the Nissan Versa, Hyundai Accent and Honda Fit in the eyes of consumers as the more desirable entrylevel models. The 2021 Kicks has a new grille, headlights, foglights, bumper and trim up front, and revised taillights and trim out back. The look is a very slight change, but it does modernize the Kicks a bit more, and it helps to draw the eye to a wider look even though the car’s track measurements haven’t changed at all. Nissan is introducing a new program that will allow Kicks buyers to personalize their rides through the Kicks Color Studio, which will offer more than a dozen colored elements – including wheel caps and inserts, mirrors, interior vents and more – that can be mixed and matched in ways to suit the buyer’s tastes. The new Kicks sports the nowubiquitous, optional, two-tone floating roof treatment that nearly all SUVs seem to have adopted, but its edgy

styling does differentiate it from more generic boxes like the Hyundai Venue and Ford EcoSport. Powering the Kicks is a dinky 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine making 122 horsepower and 114 pounds-feet of torque. If that doesn’t sound like a whole lot of grunt, that’s because it’s not. It’s mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission that actually does a decent job of keeping the engine in its limited power band, giving the Kicks the descriptor of “adequately powered, but only just.” The Kicks rides quite nicely, absorbing bumps and road imperfections with impressive damping, but it’s also a bit floaty, leaning more than you might expect in corners or on highway on-ramps. The steering is highly boosted and not blessed with a quick ratio, but the SUV is basically designed to do one thing well: Be cheap, reliable, useful urban transportation. This really is intended as a city car, one you’d buy if you have limited parking space, fight narrow streets filled with delivery trucks all the time, or need a basic conveyance to get you and friends or cargo around town easily. In that role, the Kicks excels – lower-speed stop-and-go traffic is where it truly feels most at home, with excellent outward visibility, surprisingly
good sound insulation and an upright, high-sitting driving position. The interior gets a little love from Nissan in this refresh. First and foremost is the new optional 8-inch touchscreen; a 7-inch screen (2020’s only offering) is still standard. The new

8-inch model feels big in this compact interior, and all versions now feature standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, another thing that used to be optional. The rest of the interior looks largely the same. The interior isn’t overly spacious, but it doesn’t feel cramped. The seats sit high but are oddly firm and
others in the class thanks to the updated multimedia system, the option of up to four USB ports (two type A, two type C), and its acceptable level of space and utility. It’s a decidedly competitive entry to the burgeoning field of entry-level vehicles and should be on anyone’s consideration list when shopping for one.
