S
even-passenger luxury sport utility vehicles are wonderful for families who want to travel to the store, downtown or to the beach in pure style and comfort. So, naturally, in the 2021 AMG GLS 63, Mercedes-Benz placed a 4.0-liter V-8 twin-turbocharged engine that can produce a mighty 603 horsepower, 627 lb-ft of torque and a crazy 0-to-60-mph time of 4.1 seconds, according to the manufacturer. In other words, a road trip from Dallas to Galveston that would normally take about five hours would only take about 15 minutes in the AMG GLS 63. OK, maybe a half-hour, but that’s only if you stop for lunch.

The GLS 63’s V-8 engine is equipped with an integrated EQ Boost starter-generator, which provides additional horsepower and torque and assists with idle speed control, as well as hybrid functions. Although fuel economy numbers of 14/18 mpg in city/highway driving aren’t anything to write home about, frankly, so what? You’ll be cruising comfortably with plenty of get-upand-go and worrying about filling up the tank will be extremely low on your worry list, far, far below your concern that little Billy might pick up a snail on the beach and stick it in his mouth, or up his nose. Silly Billy. With a base price of $132,100,
you’re probably expecting primo luxury, right? With the AMG GLS 63, you won’t be disappointed. Among the desirable standard features are heated and ventilated front seats with wonderful massage functions, five-zone automatic climate control, remote start (great during the unbearable Texas summer), Nappa leather upholstery, heated second-row seats and soft-close doors, just to name a very few. The test vehicle, however, did have about $16,000 worth of options; everything from diamond white metallic paint ($795) and AMG carbon fiber trim ($1,590) to technology and acoustic comfort packages, and
a bunch more in between. The total sticker price topped out at $149,160. The AMG GLS 63 is really an ideal way to see the country (with the exception of fuel economy). The test vehicle’s ride wasn’t noise-free, but it was pretty close. The seats were perfectly comfortable and there’s plenty of space for a big family to spread out. The optional Burmester surround sound system belted out tunes just like you’d want to hear them, and should the kids not want to hear Tears for Fears, Carole King or Earth, Wind and Fire (showing my age, I know), they can plug a gaming system or laptop in the second-row 115V outlet or connect via a USB-C port, which are found on each row. But the main tech highlights are up front. Dual 12.3-inch digital displays can be configured to your liking, with numerous gauge styles available. The Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) features multiple ways to control the controls, including a touchscreen, voice recognition and more. The optional MBUX Interior Assistant ($200) responds to the front occupants’ hand and arm movements thanks to an overhead 3D camera system, so simple gestures can make the magic happen, such as pointing toward the rearview mirror to turn on a map light. With any road trip, or even a jaunt to the grocery store, safety is of utmost importance, and the AMG GLS 63 comes with a comprehensive list of features to ensure fun and comfort all day long.

Flickering dash lights may be an easy fix, no Zippo required Ray Magliozzi

have a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria retired police car. The dashboard lights and gauges do not work most of the time. Occasionally they will come on briefly when I hit a bump in the road and then go dead again. I think it is a problem with the wiring. However, my mechanic says it is the circuit board behind the dashboard. What do you think is the cause of the problem? Thank you. Christee I think your mechanic is right, Christee. There’s a printed circuit board on the back of the instrument cluster. That’s
a thin sheet of plastic onto which the “wires” are, essentially, printed. After getting bounced around and flexed for 100,000 or 150,000 miles, it’s not unusual for one or more of those little “wires” to crack, taking your instrument cluster down with it. The broken “wire” is still there, with the two pieces almost touching one another. That’s why, occasionally, when you bounce the thing just right, they reconnect for a moment and then go out again. So what do you do so that you can see your instruments again at night? Well, you can buy a Zippo
lighter. Or, if you’re really cheap, a box of matches. But fixing it will require either repairing the existing circuit board or replacing it. Having yours repaired is certainly the least expensive option. It’ll probably cost you around $150 to send it away and have someone re-solder it. The problem is that you’ll be without an instrument cluster – which means without a car – while you’re waiting for it. Some places will send you a refurbished one from another car and then give you a credit if you send your broken one back to them – which they can fix and sell to somebody else.
That’s a pretty good solution, because you won’t have to wait. Start by talking to your mechanic. He may have done this job before and may have suppliers he trusts. Or, if not, maybe he can get you a deal on some Zippos. Got a question about cars? 2022 Lexus NX brings smart looks, smart tech

exus has updated its NX luxury small crossover for the 2022 model year, putting it on a new platform, giving it some updated styling and bringing a bunch of new technology to the party – including an all-new, fully upto-date multimedia system. I don’t know what has me more excited about this thing – the looks, the new plug-in-hybrid model or the fact that Lexus has finally ditched the screwy touchpad in favor of a huge new touchscreen. Let’s start with the obvious exterior update. If you have trouble telling this one apart from the outgoing NX, well, that’s not unexpected. But this is actually an entirely different vehicle than the outgoing one, and the styling is considerably refined. The bulging fenders are much better executed to make for better proportions, but the best view might be the rear-threequarters, where the new, full-width taillight lends a wider stance to the NX. The Lexus “L” badge is also gone in back, replaced with a new Lexus block script that you’ll start to see appearing across the Lexus lineup. The overall look of the new NX is cleaner and more aggressive – a nicely modern update to the nameplate. The new powertrains sound like winners too, with either the 275-horsepower, turbocharged

2.4-liter four-cylinder in the new NX 350 or the slick new plug-inhybrid, the NX 450h Plus, which can reportedly go 36 miles on electric power alone. But perhaps the latter variant’s most interesting feature is its new Predictive Efficient Drive system, which couples with the navigation system to learn the user’s driving style, analyzing real-time traffic on the route ahead to optimize when and where to use the hybrid battery for better fuel consumption. It even learns where you normally slow down and stop on your daily commute, automatically increasing regenerative braking in those areas. The interior gets a thorough redo as well, with new materials, new color choices and even a new lighting system that offers 14 themes or 64 custom lighting hues. But really, there’s only one story about the interior that needs to be told, and that’s this: the new Lexus Interface multimedia system. Gone is the absolutely terrible joystick controller from old Lexus models (and the touchpad that followed it in many of them, including the NX), which made you try and match your hand movements on the lower console to a cursor on the media screen. In its place is a beautifully clear, optional 14-inch touchscreen that features a new, Lexus-developed multimedia system (a 9.8-inch screen is standard). It’s
responsive, modern and clean, and it uses the standard Lexus font that we see elsewhere in the car. The primary interface Lexus wants you to use is voice controls. The system uses dual microphones and enhanced noise cancellation software to allow front occupants to
here that isn’t already available from competitors like Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX system. But the Lexus system is clean and efficient, and it works as it should. The voice commands are strong, and the human-machine interface worked smoothly without error in my experience.

I’m excited to test this new Lexus SUV further, as its combination of improved styling, an upgraded interior, plug-in hybrid technology and a fully modern, up-to-date multimedia system finally might move the NX off of our “not likely to recommend” list (the previous multimedia system was deal-breaker bad).
