ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTH COMMENCEMENT SUNDAY, THE EIGHTH DAY OF MAY, TWO THOUSAND TWENTY TWO
Academic Regalia The academic garb worn at today’s ceremony takes its inspiration from the 12th and 13th centuries when most students and teachers were clerics and had taken at least minor holy orders. The assignment of colors to certain faculties, a much later development, was standardized in the United States in the late 19th century. White was assigned to arts and letters; red, a traditional color of the Church, was assigned to theology; green, for herbs, went to medicine; purple, the color of emperors, went to law; and golden yellow, standing for wealth and alchemy, went to the sciences. Because philosophy means the love and pursuit of wisdom, in the case of the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), dark blue represents the mastery of the discipline of learning and scholarship in any field for which the degree is conferred rather than in the discipline of philosophy alone. Gowns vary by degree. The bachelor’s gown has pointed sleeves and the master’s gown has oblong sleeves, the rear of which are cut square and the front of which are cut in arcs. Both the bachelor’s and master’s gowns are untrimmed. The doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves and is faced down the front with black velvet. Three bars of velvet cross each sleeve. Often the bars are black, but they may also be in the color distinctive to the discipline in which the degree has been conferred. In all cases, the exterior of the academic hood is black, and the interior is lined with the official color or colors of the institution that conferred the degree, in Assumption’s case, blue. The bachelor’s hood is three feet in length; the master’s is three and one-half feet; and the doctor’s is four feet. The doctor’s hood alone has panels at the sides. The edges of the hoods are velvet, and are two inches, three inches and five inches for the bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s degrees, respectively. The color of this trim is indicative of the subject to which the degree pertains. The mortar board cap may be made of soft or hard material and, as its name suggests, symbolizes the role of learning in building individual and shared futures. The tassel is either black or the color appropriate to the subject, with the exception of the doctor’s tassel, which may be gold. For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctors’ gowns, edging of hoods and tassels of caps, the colors associated with different disciplines are as follows:
Agriculture.............................................................maize Arts, Letters and Humanities................................... white Commerce, Accountancy and Business.......................drab Economics........................................................... copper Education..........................................................light blue Fine Arts............................................................... brown Law.......................................................................purple Library Science...................................................... lemon Medicine................................................................ green Music.......................................................................pink Oratory........................................................... silver gray Philosophy........................................................dark blue Physical Education........................................... sage green Science................................................................ golden Theology...............................................................scarlet The above text is adapted from American University and Colleges, 16th ed. Assumption University Class of 2022 Honorary Degree Recipients Larry Lucchino
Commencement Speaker Doctor of Humane Letters Lucchino, “the man who chose Worcester,” served as President/CEO of the Boston Red Sox during a historic 14-year period through 2015, in which the club won three World Series, preserved and expanded Fenway Park, established the Major League Baseball record for consecutive sellouts, and established the charitable Red Sox Foundation. In 2015, Lucchino and the late Jim Skeffington assembled a group and purchased Boston’s longtime Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket, RI. In 2018, Lucchino made a landmark agreement with the City of Worcester and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that preserves the team in New England for at least the next three decades. Polar Park, which opened in April 2021, was Lucchino’s fifth ballpark project, starting with Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore; Petco Park in San Diego; JetBlue Park in Lee County, FL; and of course the ten years of renovations that preserved, protected, and enhanced legendary Fenway Park in Boston. After graduating from Yale Law School, Lucchino in 1974 began specializing in sports law and litigation, including serving as general counsel to the Washington Redskins. Lucchino entered the world of baseball when he became vice president/general counsel for the Baltimore Orioles in 1979, later becoming president from 1988 to 1993. After the Orioles were sold, Lucchino served as president and CEO of the San Diego Padres before joining John W. Henry, Tom Werner, and their partners, who purchased the Red Sox, Fenway Park, and 80 percent of NESN in December 2001. Lucchino has served on several MLB committees, helped establish baseball’s first International Opener, and was an early supporter of the World Baseball Classic. In addition to the Red Sox Hall of Fame, the Pittsburgh native is a member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. He received the Judge Emil Fuchs Award from the Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America in 2011 in honor of his three decades of service to the game of baseball. An All-City second baseman in high school in his native Pittsburgh, Lucchino played basketball and graduated with honors from Princeton University, where he played in the Final Four. He has the distinction of having earned a Final Four Watch, Super Bowl Ring, and multiple World Series Rings. He serves as chairman of the Red Sox’s official charity, “The Jimmy Fund” at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, which has three times saved his life.
Francisca “Paqui” Kelly Doctor of Humane Letters
The Kelly Cares Foundation was founded by Paqui, a two-time breast cancer survivor, and Brian ’83, HD ‘12 Kelly, to raise awareness of and funds for the fight against breast cancer. Since its founding, the organization has strengthened communities and inspired hope by donating more than $5.5 million to over 195 causes in 20 U.S. states and four countries that align with the foundation’s two key initiatives: cancer research and patient advocacy. The foundation states that it serves “as a ‘Playbook for Hope’ for thousands of families, patients, caregivers, students, and organizations” in the areas of health (by funding research, essential services, prevention programs, and healthy-living initiatives); education (by supporting research and institutional advancement that are committed to quality education); and investing in community programs that promote active participation and engagement of its members. Prior to founding the Kelly Cares Foundation, Kelly served for more than 13 years as a chemistry teacher. She holds a Master of Education from Grand Valley State University.

She is a leading expert in Salesian spirituality and a prolific author, including such titles as Bond of Perfection: Jeanne de Chantal and Francois de Sales, Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal: Letters of Spiritual Direction, and Francis de Sales: Introduction to the Devout Life and Treatise on the Love of God. Prof. Wright taught at the University of Santa Barbara, the Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, and the University of Nebraska at Omaha before joining Creighton University as a visiting professor of theology in 1989. She served as professor of philosophy until 2017, when she was named professor emerita; she was also director of the Center for the Study of Catholicism at Creighton and the John C. Kenefick Faculty Chair in the Humanities. Prof. Wright holds a bachelor’s degree from California State University at Los Angeles, and a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Francesco C. Cesareo, Ph.D. President Emeritus Doctor of Humane Letters
Since he was elected by the Board in February 2007, President Cesareo has demonstrated innovative leadership resulting in new academic programs such as cybersecurity, nursing, sport management, and more. He has established articulation agreements with national universities such as the University of Notre Dame, Washington University in St. Louis, Duke University, Duquesne University, and the University of St. Thomas School of Law. He was instrumental in Assumption becoming one of twenty-one Founding Partners of the Worcester Red Sox, which has benefitted students and the team. Among President Cesareo’s notable accomplishments are establishing a campus in Rome, Italy; raising nearly $77 million for the University since July 2007, including the highly successful Light the Way Capital Campaign that significantly exceeded its goal; and transitioning the institution from a college to a university which included the creation of five separate schools: the D’Amour College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Froelich School of Nursing, Grenon School of Business, School of Graduate Studies, and School of Health Professions. President Cesareo worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to ensure the health and safety of the campus community successfully negotiating the unprecedented challenges and ever-changing circumstances that came as a result of COVID-19. Through his membership and leadership on several local and national boards, President Cesareo increased awareness and recognition of the University. He serves as a Commissioner for the New England Commission of Higher Education, is the Board President of the Sr. Thea Bowman Black Catholic Educational Foundation, and is the former Chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ National Review Board. The recipient of several awards, including the Leadership in Higher Education Award, the Campus Ministry Association Award for Outstanding Support of Catholic Campus Ministry, the Worcester Business Journal Hall of Fame, and prestigious Fr. d’Alzon Medal, President Cesareo has been recognized as an individual whose faith and energy give witness to the validity and priority of spiritual values in an increasingly secular world and who courageously brings to bear in his daily life the life-giving message of Christ. Despite his many responsibilities, President Cesareo always remained focused on the students of Assumption. He has been a visible presence on campus, engaging with students both formally and informally, knowing many of them by name. Given his love of students, he has been affectionally known by them as “Pres Chez.” He is infamous for his many marches through Rome
3
with SOPHIA students, where he walked vigorously with them 10 miles per day as he shared his passion for the Eternal City. President Cesareo graduated summa cum laude from Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception and earned a master’s degree and doctorate from Fordham University in New York. A Fulbright Scholar who studied at the University of Rome and the Pontifical Gregorian University, he was appointed to the John J. and Mary Jane Breen Chair in Catholic Studies at John Carroll University where he was the founding director of the Institute of Catholic Studies (1997-2004) while serving as professor of history (1989-2004). Following John Carroll, President Cesareo served as Dean of the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts at Duquesne University (2004-2007).
Filomena P. Cesareo, Esquire, J.D. Doctor of Humane Letters
For the last 15 years, Filomena Cesareo has been an omnipresent and supportive fixture on the Assumption campus and in the Worcester community. As President Cesareo was raising the academic profile of Assumption, Filomena nurtured relationships with Assumption parents, students and throughout the City of Worcester through her engagement with many nonprofits and regularly hosting many students in their home. Among her many contributions to enhancing the University experience for families was her establishment of the Assumption Parent and Family Association in 2016. This organization supports several events throughout the year and invites students’ families to become more involved with the University. Filomena also hosted teas in their home for students and friends of the University, where attendees shared the transformative experiences of their time at Assumption. Her engagement in the Worcester community is admirable. For more than 10 years, Filomena was a member of the Financial Literacy Committee of the Women’s Initiative of the United Way and helped to organize the Dollar Scholar Conferences and develop its curriculum. She also serves on the boards of Pernet Family Health Services, the Catholic School Board for the Diocese of Worcester and Filomena helped establish the Worcester Children’s Choir, which is in-residence at Assumption. Filomena served as a corporator for the Worcester Art Museum and on the Audio Journal Board. Professionally, Filomena is an attorney who practices with a law firm based in Cleveland.

The Assumption University Mace The Assumption University mace, and its role at the front of the academic procession, symbolizes the shared goals of the academic institution. In medieval times, the mace was recognized as a symbol of authority, and in the context of an academic community, it has often signified teaching authority. At Assumption University, education promotes self-discovery, but the true discovery of self must first take into account one’s own nature and purpose. The symbolism of the mace reflects the simple but essential elements that make for a full and responsible consideration of self, within the broader context in which there can be a full blossoming of the individual. An education at Assumption nurtures the growth of several key virtues. These include: the Intellectual Virtues, which guide students to the truth; the Moral Virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude and moderation) which enable a person to lead a good life; and, most important of all, the Theological Virtues (faith, hope and charity), which lead the Christian to ultimate happiness. The Latin lettering on the three bands of the sterling node states the thrust of these essential virtues: Intelligentia Adducitur Veritatem; Voluntas Adducitur Bonum; Cor Adducitur Amorem. The staff of the mace could be considered a lignum vitae (tree of life), from which the virtues spring. The three upper branches of ebony and gold represent the virtues and their impact upon everyone at the University, symbolized by the multifaceted fluorite stone. At Assumption, it is the community’s shared vision that fosters a full flowering of the individual. The three blossoms of gold from the blue fluorite represent the individual coming to full maturity in Christ, in accord with the University’s motto: “Until Christ be formed in you.” The Assumption University Mace was conceived, designed, created and given as a gift to the University by Paul A. Cavanagh of Greenville, Rhode Island. Due to its historical significance the Mace remains unchanged despite the transition to Assumption University in 2020. 15
