Lady Margaret Hall Campaign Report 2013

Best Ever Fundraising Year for LMH: £4,204,005

UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD

Annual Fund £0.5m

Every Gift Counts: 17.6% alumni made a gift in 2012-13 Student Support Focus: challenge gifts to Annual Fund and major donations result in £1.15m raised Anniversary Fundraising: donations top £50k for the year The philanthropic support for the College in the financial year 2012-13 was greater than in any previous year and it is a pleasure and huge privilege to acknowledge this. We received more by way of donations of cash and property than ever before, from more donors than ever before, and from a greater proportion of the alumni body than ever before. The diagram above shows clearly the significance of philanthropic giving as a proportion of the College’s overall incoming resources in 2012-13. These donations, quite simply, allow LMH not only to survive but also to prosper, and to achieve the very ambitious goals that the Governing Body has set in the College’s Strategic Plan. The goals are to invest in new buildings and facilities, to safeguard our tutorial fellowships and to create research fellowships for young academics, and to provide bursaries and scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students. In supporting these goals our donors are signalling their support for the underlying values of LMH. We are very grateful for this

endorsement of our educational mission. Of particular note is that £1.15m was given during the year for student support. The two lead donations, of £500k from Michael O’Sullivan, and £250k from Neil Simpkins, have each been used to endow bursaries for undergraduates, and hundreds of other donations took the total above £1 million.

Michael O’Sullivan

Neil Simpkins

The positive effect of philanthropic support upon the College is tangible and evident to all who visit LMH, particularly to those who have not been for some time. Our students today are extremely fortunate to benefit so much from the continued goodwill of their predecessors.

Without it, some might not be here. In addition to the increased bursary and scholarship funds, students will soon have further new facilities as we begin the construction of the second phase of new buildings. Our contactor has just arrived on site to begin work on the Clore Graduate Centre, the Donald Fothergill building, the new entrance and Porters’ Lodge, and the new front quadrangle. Continuing philanthropic support in the years ahead is essential for the College to flourish. For the building programme we still have some £2.6 million to raise towards our target of £8.0m, while the need to support students and tutorial posts will not diminish. We are enormously grateful to those of you who supported us so generously last year. We hope you will continue to do so and thus inspire others to join you for the first time in helping this wonderful College to meet the considerable challenges ahead. Peter Watson Development Director, January 2014 1

January 2014 – building work begins The second phase of the College’s new building project is underway! At the time of writing, our contractors have arrived on site. Already, the front of College is blocked off with temporary barriers ahead of more secure and permanent hoarding for the duration of the building work (there will be viewing panels for us, visitors and passers-by to see the progress as it happens). This marks a most exciting moment for LMH, one which we have been eagerly awaiting. Prior to construction of the Clore Graduate Centre and Donald Fothergill building, a great deal of preparation has been under way in College. During December 2012, the Porters’ Lodge was moved into spacious temporary accommodation in No.1 Fyfield Road until the new Lodge is ready. The next striking change

to the area at the front of College took place in February 2013 with the removal of trees from the garden of No.1 Fyfield Road. This was followed by the rebuilding of the bay window in No.1 – Dr Doig’s study! In the summer, and following refurbishment and redesign of the space, the ICT Department moved into the old Porters’ Lodge under the archway. Finally, we completed our work on the College bicycle rack supply. Between December 2012 and summer 2013, more than 150 bicycle racks have been relocated from the front of College to Norham Mews and 100 new racks have been provided, bringing provision towards our 400 rack target. We hope many alumni and friends will visit the College and share our excitement as this transformative project takes shape.

Prizes for Law Undergraduates We were saddened by the news of Emma Slessinger’s (1977 Jurisprudence) death in February 2012. It was Emma’s intention that a gift left to LMH in her will should support undergraduates reading Law. We were delighted to establish the Slessenger-Brierly Fund. Emma’s father’s guardian, Emily Brierly, read History at LMH between 1908 and 1911. The Fund will be used to award two prizes for second year students, one to the best performing student in the year, and the other to the student whose performance has most improved over the year. These prizes will act as incentives for Law students to continue working hard in the absence of exams in their second year.

Record year for Annual Fund 2012-13 was a particularly successful year for the LMH Annual Fund and its Telephone Campaign. Gifts from 1,325 Alumni and Friends contributed a remarkable £501,000, which is £87,000 more than in 2011-12. There is no doubt that Neil Simpkins’ (1984 Physics) challenge gift created a real impetus for donations to student support this year, for which £200,000 was raised specifically. This is a tremendous result for LMH students from your combined donations. During two weeks’ calling in March, students telephoned 671 alumni as part of the annual Telephone Campaign, sharing

LMH stories, gaining some valuable careers advice and raising a tremendous £153,347 for Annual Fund projects. Callers said that Neil Simpkins’ challenge provided an excellent basis with which to ask for donations, offering donors a wonderful incentive this year. It also encouraged many nondonors to give for the first time; 268 gifts totalling £127,971 were specifically earmarked for student support as a result. As always, we are extremely grateful to everyone who contributed and hope that others will join us with a gift in 2013-14.

Please visit www.lmh.ox.ac.uk/alumni.aspx to find out how you can support LMH students this year.

2012-13: £185k Raised for Graduates Graduate students are a vital part of LMH’s present and future, coming from all over the world to work in an exciting array of different disciplines. The College continues to work hard to increase the number and size of postgraduate scholarships available and we are so grateful to all those who have helped us to this end. Such valuable funding enables LMH to be a college of first choice and support these talented students. During 2012-13 Santander UK plc funded, for a second year, scholarships and research travel grants at LMH - as well as financial support for a visiting fellow at LMH from the University of Alcalá. A challenge grant from the College Contrubutions Fund will make up to £75k per annum available for graduate scholarships for a 5 year period, provided we can raise a similar sum in new funds. During 2012-13, you helped us raise the required matching amount.

subjects where posts have been vacated and subsequently frozen due to lack of funds. We are delighted to report that during 2012-13, the College successfully reached its £600,000 share of the £1.2m target for Economics. We are truly grateful to those donors who have made Economics

at LMH their priority since we began fundraising for the Fellowship in 2011. The generous gifts from Guy Monson (1981 PPE) and Michael O’Sullivan (1982 PPE), when added to a number of significant donations from other Economics alumni, have enabled this substantial sum to be raised.

Year Group Giving – Anniversary Funds Anniversary Funds are an important feature of the Annual Fund and have now involved ten year groups. During 2012-13, three year groups successfully raised a joint donation to the College in honour of an anniversary. In light of the increase in undergraduate fees to £9,000 per annum, each group allocated their gifts towards Student Support. Tessa Dunstan, Sheila Peskett and Edwina Sherrington led the 50th Anniversary Fund for 1963, raising £14.6k which was celebrated at the Gaudy in June. 1972, led by Sarah Baxter, Nicky Bull and Monica Fisher, completed their 40th Anniversary Fund in early July with a total of £14k. Georgina Ferry, Emma Johnson Gilbert, Linda Muirhead and Jo Poulton gathered 1973 together for their 40th Anniversary in June raising a total of £11.1k. Thank you to everyone who has been involved with these initiatives, whether in leading the groups or donating - we are extremely grateful for your support; 230 donors to date, have, between them, raised more than £120,000. We are now working towards the 50th Anniversary of 1964, the 40th Anniversary of 1974, and for the first time, the 30th Anniversary of 1984 and 20th Anniversary of 1994!

Beaufort Circle of Legators We are deeply grateful to those 221 Alumni and Friends who have generously chosen this farsighted way of providing support to future generations of students and academics at LMH. We are delighted to recognise and thank publicly all those who have let us know of their intention to make a legacy to LMH, by enrolling them as members of the Beaufort Circle. It is a pleasure and privilege to welcome members to the annual Beaufort Circle lunch at the start of each new academic year, and to keep them updated with current activity and development in the College. Janet Johnson (1966, History) During 2012-13, LMH received a further generous donation towards the Janet Johnson Bursary Fund, by way of a legacy in Janet’s will. This legacy has been added to previous donations made to the Fund, from her husband Peter, and from Janet herself during her lifetime, and to smaller sums given in her memory by alumni and friends, following her death from cancer in September 2012.

Janet was a great supporter of LMH and stayed engaged with the College from the time she arrived to read History in 1966. After a career as a teacher, she returned as a mature student to study for a doctorate which she successfully completed in 2001. Most recently, she was a Research Fellow at the College and, at the time of her death, was researching the history of LMH.

There will be an obituary of Janet Johnson in the Brown Book 2014.
