COMPANION OF YOUTH Message from Don Bosco Various sayings of St. John Bosco (1815-1888) My Dear Boys, Welcome to the school of Don Bosco! Always remember that: It is enough for a boy to enter into a School of Don Bosco for the Blessed Virgin to take him immediately under her mantle. • Entrust everything to Jesus in Blessed Sacrament and Mary Help of Christians and you will see what miracles are all about. • I do not desire anything else from the youth than they become good, and that they are always cheerful. By all means live with the greatest cheerfulness at all times, provided you do not sin. • When I see all the boys busily playing I am certain that the devil can do his best but will not succeed. • To do good you must have courage, be ready to suffer any mortification, never humiliate anyone, always be lovable. • May your heart be always flavored with kindness: kindness in talking and in
1
acting. May your every word be marked with charity: sweetness in speaking, in working, and in advising for everything and for everybody. • Do good to all, evil to no one. Do not postpone till tomorrow what you can do today, because, perhaps, tomorrow you will have no more time. • Work for the Lord. Paradise pays everything. Do your best, and then the Lord will do the rest. • Laziness and modesty cannot stay together. By avoiding laziness you will overcome temptations against modesty. • The first method to educate well is to make good confessions and communions. • Place yourself in the hands of God and Mary with all trust; pray and everything will be all right.
My dear children, I love you with all my heart, and it is enough for you to be young for me to love you so much. See you all in Heaven.
With Jesus and Mary, Don Bosco

Vision-Mission of Don Bosco Schools and Training Centers (Philippine-North Province)
We, The Educative-Pastoral Communities (EPC) of the Don Bosco Schools and training centers of the North Province, envision the young as servant-leaders in the Church of the Poor. Faithful to the charism of St. John Bosco, we educate and evangelize the young, particularly the marginalized. We enable them to use their power of choice and develop their giftedness towards their social integration and participation in social transformation. To realize our vision, we journey with the young in an environment permeated by the Preventive System and characterized by a strong commitment to excellence and perpetual learning, collaboration and networking.

Homily Profession of Faith (The Apostles’ Creed) A: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Profession of Faith (Nicene Creed) I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge

the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. General Intercessions P: Let us pray… A: LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER. P: A.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST Song at the Presentation of the Gifts P:
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. A: BLESSED BE GOD FOREVER. P: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you: fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink. A: BLESSED BE GOD FOREVER. P: Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. A: MAY THE LORD ACCEPT THE SACRIFICE AT YOUR HANDS FOR THE PRAISE AND GLORY OF HIS NAME, FOR OUR GOOD, AND THE GOOD OF ALL HIS HOLY CHURCH. Prayer over the Gifts
13
P: A:
… We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. AMEN
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER II P: The Lord be with You A: AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT. P: Lift up your hearts A: WE LIFT THEM UP TO THE LORD. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. A: IT IS RIGHT AND JUST. P: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, father most holy, through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, your Word through whom you made all things, whom you sent as our Savior and born of the Virgin. Fulfilling your will and gaining for you a holy people, he stretched out his hands as he endured his Passion, so as to break the bonds of death and manifest the resurrection. And so, with Angels and all the Saints we declare your glory, as with one voice we acclaim: A: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Consecration P: You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness make holy, therefore these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the Body and + Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his Passion, he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take this, all of you, and eat of it; for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more you thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying:
14
Take this, all of you, and drink from it; for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith: A: (i) We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again. (ii) When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again. (iii) Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection, you have set us free. . P: Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his Death and Resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the Bread of life and the Chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your Church, spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Francis our Pope and N… our Bishop and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy: welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the blessed Apostles, and all the Saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever.
15
A:
AMEN.
Communion Rite P: At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say: A: Our Father, who art in heaven; hollowed be Thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. P: Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. A: FOR THE KINGDOM THE POWER AND THE GLORY ARE YOURS NOW AND FOREVER. P: Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you; look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign forever and ever. A: AMEN P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. A: AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT. P: Let us offer each other a sign of peace. (Giving of a sign of peace to those around) Breaking of the Bread P: Lamb of God… A: LAMB OF GOD, YOU TAKE AWAY THE SINS OF THE WORLD, HAVE MERCY ON US. LAMB OF GOD, YOU TAKE AWAY THE SINS OF THE WORLD, HAVE MERCY ON US. LAMB OF GOD, YOU TAKE AWAY THE SINS OF THE WORLD, GRANT US PEACE. P: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

Amen. Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
27
Most sweet Jesus, redeemer of the human race, look down upon us humbly prostrate before your altar. We are yours and yours we wish to be but to be more surely united with you behold each one of us freely consecrates himself today to your most Sacred Heart. Many indeed have never known you, many too, despising your precepts have rejected you. Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to your Sacred Heart. Be you king, O Lord, not only of the faithful who have never forsaken you but also of the prodigal children who have abandoned you. Grant that they may quickly return to their Father's house lest they die of wretchedness and hunger. Be you King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions or whom discord keeps aloof and call them back to the harbor of truth and the unity of faith so that soon there may be but one flock and one shepherd. Oratio Imperata (Prayer for Deliverance from Calamities) Almighty Father, we raise our hearts to You in gratitude, for the wonders of creation of which we are part, for Your providence in sustaining us in our needs, and for Your wisdom that guides the course of the universe. We acknowledge our sins against You and the rest of Your creation. We have not been good stewards of nature. We have confused Your command to subdue the earth. The environment is made to suffer our wrongdoing, and now we reap the harvest of our abuse and indifference. Global warning is upon us. Typhoons, floods, volcanic eruption, and other natural calamities occur in the increasing number and intensity. We turn to you, our loving Father, and beg forgiveness for our sins. We ask that we, our loved ones and our hard earned possessions be spared from the threat of calamities, natural and man-made. We beseech You to inspire us all to grow into responsible stewards of Your creation, and generous neighbors to those in need. Amen Prayer for Teachers (From http://www.ncdsb.on.ca/pdfs/Prayerforteachers1.pdf)

He provides the beasts with their food and young ravens that call upon Him. A: His delight is not in horses nor His pleasures in warriors’ strength. For the word of the Lord is faithful and all His works to be trusted The Lord loves justice and right and fills the earth with His love. B: By His word, the heavens were made; by the breath of His mouth, all the stars. He collects the waves of the oceans; he stores up the depths of the sea. A:
He frustrates the designs of the nations, he defeats the plans of the people. His own design shall stand forever, the plans of His heart from age to age. B: A king is not saved by his army, nor a warrior preserved by his strength. A vain hope for safety is the horse; despite its power it cannot save. A:
The Lord looks on those who revere Him, on those who hope in His love, to rescue their souls from death, to keep them alive in famine. B: Our soul is waiting for the Lord. MORNING PRAYER 5 Leader: Let us begin our prayer with the Sign of the Cross, the symbol of God’s great love for us. + In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen. Psalm 51 To be recited alternately: Leader: God is our Father. He listens to us. With faith in His love and mercy, let us earnestly pray Psalm 51, asking God to cleanse us of our sins and to create a pure heart in each and every one of us. And so we pray: A: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offense. O wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin. B: My offenses truly I know them; my sin is always before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned; what is evil in your sight I have done. A: That you may be justified when you give sentence and be without reproach when you judge. O see, in guilt I was born, a sinner was I conceived. B: Indeed you love truth in the heart; then in the secret of my heart teach me wisdom. O purify me, then I shall be clean; O wash me, I shall be whiter than snow. A: Make me hear rejoicing and gladness, that the bones you have crushed may revive. From my sins turn away your face and blot out all my guilt. B: A pure heart create for me, O God, put a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, nor deprive me of your Holy Spirit.
45
A: Give me again the joy of your help; with a spirit of fervor sustain me, that I may teach transgressors your ways and sinners may return to you. B: O rescue me, God, my helper, and my tongue shall ring out your goodness. O Lord, open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise. A: For in sacrifice you take no delight, burnt offering from me you would refuse, my sacrifice, a contrite spirit. A humbled, contrite heart you will not spurn. B: In your goodness, show favor to Zion: rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Then you will be pleased with lawful sacrifice, holocausts offered on your altar. MORNING PRAYER 9 – PRAYER FOR MERCY Leader: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. (+) Amen.
Let us pray Psalm 51 Choir 1: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offense. O wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin. Choir 2: My offenses truly I know them; my sin is always before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned; what is evil in your sight I have done. Choir 1: That you may be justified when you give sentence and be without reproach when you judge. O see, in guilt was I born, a sinner was I conceived. Choir 2: Indeed you love truth in the heart; then in the secret of my heart teach me wisdom. O purify me, then I shall be clean; O wash me, I shall be whiter than snow. Choir 1: Make me hear rejoicing and gladness, that the bones you have crushed may revive. From my sins turn away your face and blot out all my guilt. Choir 2: A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me.
54
Do not cast me away from your presence, nor deprive me of your holy spirit. Choir 1: Give me again the joy of your help; with a spirit of fervor sustain me, that I may teach transgressors your ways and sinners may return to you. Choir 2: O rescue me, God, my helper, and my tongue shall ring out your goodness. O Lord, open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise. Choir 1: For in sacrifice you take no delight, burnt offering from me you would refuse; my sacrifice, a contrite spirit. A humbled, contrite heart you will not spurn. Choir 2: In your goodness, show favor to Zion: rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Then you will be pleased with lawful sacrifice, holocausts offered on your altar. Leader: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. All: As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen Leader: Let us listen to God’s message for us today (READING OF THE DAY) Leader: Let us express our sorrow for our sins (Act of Contrition) All: O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You. Family (on the occasion of the Bicentenary of the Birth of Saint John Bosco), Pope Francis described Don Bosco: He is a man * who surrendered himself totally to God and to the young * in one and the same act of love * which led him to ‘go out’ * and take courageous decisions: * the decision to devote himself to poor youth * with the aim of giving rise * to a vast movement of poor people for poor people; * and the decision to extend this service * beyond the boundaries of language, race, culture and religion, * thanks to his tireless missionary impulse.”
Leader: In pursuit of fulfilling the same mission, Pope Francis encourages us with his word: All: “Everyone should be able to experience * the joy of being loved by God,* the joy of salvation. * It is a gift * that one cannot keep to oneself, * but is to be shared. * The proclamation of the Gospel * is part of being disciples of Christ * and it is a constant commitment * that animates the whole life of the Church.” Leader: We need to take part in the mission of the Church because we belong to the Church. NIGHT PRAYER Leader: In the name + of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen. Leader: The end of the day reminds us of the end of life. Let us now profess our faith, the faith for which we want to live and die. All:
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the
87
Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. JOHN BOSCO (In preparation for Don Bosco’s Feast Day) Opening Hymn: St. John Bosco, Our Loving Father Leader: In the name + of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit All: Amen Leader: We are gathered before the statue of St. John Bosco to honor and beg for his intercession. Wounded children as we are, because of our own frailty and sinfulness, we beg for God’s loving forgiveness and healing. Together, let us pray: First Day (Faith in God) O St. John Bosco, no touch of doubt stained your complete faith in God, even in the most trying situations. We face our daily routine with many fears and anxieties because of the difficulties at home, in school, and at work. Through your intercession, may God increase our faith, bring us closer to him, and give us the wisdom to understand his plans for us.
Second day (love for the Eucharist) O St. John Bosco, you celebrated every Mass with devotion and taught your boys to love the Eucharist. At
95
times, we miss our Sunday Mass or fail to participate actively and devoutly. We forget to spend time before the Blessed Sacrament. Through your intercession, may Christ reveal himself to us in a deeper way and fill our hearts with hunger for the Bread from heaven. Third Day (Love for Mary) O St. John Bosco, you gave Mary a special place in your life and in your work for the young. We also want her to be the Queen of our homes and our hearts Through your intercession, may God remove all pride and arrogance from our youthful hearts that we may always seek the protection and guidance of Mary our Mother. Fourth day ( Trustworthiness to your Duties) O St. John Bosco, you brought holiness within our reach by encouraging us to fulfill our daily duties faithfully. We need not perform extraordinary acts of penance or prayer to become saints. Through your intercession, may God reveal himself in our daily schedule of study, work, and play, that we may do all our ordinary duties extraordinarily well. Fifth Day (rejection of sin) O St. John Bosco, your mother Margaret taught you to hate and reject any form of sin. We often put ourselves in the occasions of sin, and become weak and hesitant in front of temptations. Through your intercession, may God fill us with a genuine sorrow for our sins, and grant us his forgiveness. May we reject sin and strive to live as loving sons and daughters of God our Father. Sixth Day (joy and peace) O St. John Bosco, you never allowed anxiety and anger to take away the joy and peace in our heart. Often, we find ourselves among persons who worry about everything and find something wrong in everyone. Through our intercession, may God grant our families the gifts of joy and peace. May we always be happy and healthy, and may we share our youthful enthusiasm and optimism with all those we meet.
96
Seventh Day (Desire for Heaven) O St. John Bosco, you lived your life in joyful expectation for the reward of heaven and inspired St. Dominic Savio with a similar desire. We are taken up by the worries and concerns of our daily lives that we fail to look beyond the horizon. Through your intercession, may God keep alive in us a strong desire to live forever with him and all the saints. May we keep to the narrow but sure path that leads to heaven. Eight Day (openness to God’s will) O St. John Bosco, through a dream when you were nine years old, you discovered God’s will and fulfilled it even at the cost of sacrifice. We cherish our many dreams and ambitions and look forward to the future. Through your intercession, may God continue to bless and protect us. May we remain ever open to his will, and ever willing to embrace it with generosity and commitment. Ninth Day (Gratitude to God) O St. John Bosco, through a dream when you were nine years old, you discovered God’s will and fulfilled it even at the cost of sacrifice. We cherish our many dreams and ambitions and look forward to the future. Through your intercession, may God reveal to us his wonderful plan. May we in turn be grateful to him whose love endures forever. [Reading of Petitions and Thanksgiving] Leader: St. John Bosco, friend of souls, to you I recommend the salvation of my soul. Your heart was always full of love for all human needs, therefore I pray, implore for me from God His grace, which is so near to my heart... All:

On each of the adjacent ten small beads (a decade) recite a Hail Mary while reflecting on the Mystery. After the tenth Hail Mary, recite a Glory Be to the Father and the Fatima Prayer (optional): O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell and bring all souls into heaven, especially those who need most of your divine mercy. all
Priest: Glory be to the Father… All: As it was in the beginning… Priest: The real presence of Christ in the Eucharist has been challenged from his own time. Many who heard Christ saying “My flesh is really food and my blood is drink” reacted: “ This sort of teaching is very hard! Who can accept it!” (Jn 6:55, 60). But Jesus did not mince words. He maintained that if we do not eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, we have no life in him. Let us now

adore Christ present in all the Masses celebrated every day and in all the tabernacles scattered all over the world. ALL: I adore you, O my God, / present in the Holy Eucharist, / as my Creator, my preserver, and my Redeemer. / I offer you all that I have, / all that I am, / all depends on me. / I offer you my mind to think of you; / my heart love you; / my will to serve you; / my body to labor and suffer for your love. / I am yours, I give myself. / I entrust myself to you. / I abandon myself to you. / I wish to live and die for love of you. Short Silence Priest: Jesus said: “ I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall never be hungry, and who believes in me shall never be thirsty… my flesh is really food and my blood is drink. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood, lives in me and I in him.” (Jn 6:35, 55) ALL: After this many disciples withdrew and no longer followed Jesus. Priest: Jesus asked the Twelve, “Will you also go away?” Peter answered him, “Lord whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and now we know that you are the Holy One of God.” (Jn. 6:66ff) ALL: Lord, give me a pure heart, that I may see you; / a humble heart, that I may hear you; / a heart of love, that I may serve you; / a heart of faith, that I may abide in you. THE NEW WAY OF THE CROSS Opening Prayer: Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, as we gather here to meditate on your Paschal Mystery, grant us all the grace to detest sin as you did, and to spend our life for our neighbor as you taught us through your example. Thus shall we be able to share not only in your sufferings but also in your resurrection. You who live and reign forever and ever. All: Amen. The First Station: THE LAST SUPPER Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (1 Cor 11:23-26) (Pause for silent reflection) Prayer Lord Jesus, you loved us to the utmost. * You loved us to the end. * You remain in the Eucharist to be for us * the food and drink that give eternal life. * You remain with us * to be the continuous sign * of God’s saving presence in all circumstances of life. Forgive us, Lord, * for the times we have failed to appreciate * your gift of self to us * and your loving presence in the Eucharist. Song: (To be sung to the tune of “O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine …”) Your body and blood most holy Our food divine we share, To quench our thirst and hunger And make us also care.
109
The Second Station: THE AGONY IN GETHSEMANI Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (Lk 22:39-42.44-45) Prayer It was a long, terrible night, Lord. * And not one of your disciples found the strength * to keep you company in your agony. * Your only strength was your determination * to do the Father’s will at all costs. And your solitary agony continues, * even to this day, * in the loneliness of those who have no friends, * no home, no hope, no future * …Our society is filled with them, * but we pretend not to know, * and slumber noisily while they die * victims of neglect. Song:
Condemned you were, dear Lord, Of God the only Son, By leaders of the people To heal and save you’d come.
The Third Station: JESUS BEFORE THE SANHEDRIN Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (Mk 14:60-64.15:1) Prayer Lord Jesus, * you are the judge of all human beings, * yet you accepted to be judged by biased judges. * You are the all-holy, * the only innocent on earth, * yet you endured the condemnation of obstinate sinners … And the unfair trial goes on, * duplicated in all the unjust sentences * through which innocent people are condemned and rascals are acquitted. * You are still the victim of these injustices * perpetuated against the weak, the defenseless, * the voiceless of our society, * in whom you continue to live and suffer.
110
Song:
Your agony in the Garden How dreadful, Lord it was! With you we’ll watch in prayer, But you remain with us.
The Fourth Station: THE SCOURGING AND CROWNING WITH THORNS Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (Mt 27:22-20) Prayer Instigated by your enemies, * the mob wanted you dead, dear Jesus, * and Pilate didn’t think it was worthwhile * to uphold justice and protect your innocence. * So the mad mob had its way. * The Roman soldiers had their way * as they reduced your body to a bleeding wound * and crowned your head with thorns and mockery. And you didn’t open your mouth in protest. *You endured it all, * meek, like a lamb to be slaughtered; * silent, like the millions of exploited simple people, * oppressed by the ruthless, * while many of us turn a blind eye * to such blatant injustices … Song:
Your body, pure and holy, Disfigured by the scourge, Your head so bright and noble With thorns they tried to purge.
The Fifth Station: JESUS RECEIVES THE CROSS Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (Mt 27:31)
111
Prayer Dear Lord, * the cross was the punishment for criminals and insurgents. * Who could believe that it was placed on the shoulders of the Son of God, * the source of all holiness and goodness? And yet, you accepted it in all humility * because you knew that such was the condition * to save us from eternal damnation. The cross you accepted to carry was our cross * - the cross of our sins, * the cross of our weaknesses, our discouragements, * our failures, our wickedness … To this very day, * innocent men, women and children are made to bear * the cross of other people’s faults, greed, pride, lust… Grant us the grace, dear Lord, * never to burden others with our moral defects, * and bravely to carry with you * the cross of our daily duty. Song:
Upon your shoulders full of wounds The cross for sins was laid. You bore it all, dear Jesus. That we all might be saved.
The Sixth Station: JESUS FALLS UNDER THE WEIGHT OF THE CROSS Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (Isaiah 53:4-5) Prayer The distance from the Praetorium to Calvary was not long * - just a few hundred meters. But it took you long, Lord, to walk that stretch, staggering painfully * and groping in vain for help … * Your strength had long deserted you. * The road was uneven. * The crowd was merciless. * The cross was becoming heavier * and heavier, till it weighed you down… * down to the dust! Like you, Lord, * so many of us stagger and fall * along
112
the hard way of the cross * that life becomes when trials and failures * overwhelm us and crush us to the ground. When we stumble and fall, * Lord, be our support! And when our brothers and sisters seem unable to carry the burden of their trials, * Lord, give us a compassionate heart, * that we may not add insult to injury. Song:
The sins of all mankind Your feeble knees did bend. Your gentle body’s made to fall That we might so amend.
The Seventh Station: SIMON OF CYRENE CARRIES THE CROSS OF JESUS Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (Mk 15:21) Prayer Simon just happened to pass there * on his way home from the fields. * He was forced to make a detour * - a detour that changed the course if his life. * Forced to carry your cross, Lord Jesus, * he himself became a victim of oppression and injustice. * He experienced a share of your pain, Lord, * and thus discovered what life can be * if one wants to help others. Send us more simon of Cyrene, Lord. * Send us people who have the courage * to shoulder the crosses of others in brotherly solidarity and patience. * Make us like Simon, Lord. * Grant us the strength and generosity to carry one another’s burden, * for our society is crowded with poor Christs * crushed by crosses of all shapes and weights.
113
Song::
Simon, the farm helper Relieves you of your cross. We wish we could, like him, Help others in their loss.
The Eighth Station: JESUS MEETS THE PIOUS WOMEN OF JERUSALEM Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (Lk 23:27-31) Prayer Lord Jesus, * those women of Jerusalem were surely sincere in their sorrow for you. * They were brave enough to follow you along the road to Calvary. * But you directed their attention to the cause of your suffering * - SIN, and the punishment which unrepentance would bring down on all. We wish we were as sincere as they were * in lamenting the unfair treatment to which you were subjected. * And we wish likewise, that we were equally sensitive * to the suffering of our neighbor * - especially the squatters, the jobless, the homeless, * and all the other victims of human injustice and exploitation. * For it is all these forms of sin * which bring down God’s well-deserved punishments on our society. Song:
The weeping women met you, With tears they mourn your pain. May we, too, weep copiously And never sin again.
The Ninth Station: JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (Lk 23:33-35)
114
Prayer Lord, * those hands of yours which caressed the children, * blessed the sick and chased demons away * are now nailed mercilessly to the wood of the cross. * Your feet which had taken you from village to village * in an effort to bring the Good News of the Kingdom to all, * are now immobilized forever… * your enemies dare you to come down from the cross. * But you don’t. Not because of the nails, but because of your love for us sinners. It was love which brought you there. * It is love that keeps you there. Lord Jesus, * grant us the grace to do our duties * out of love and with love, * even when all this resembles the pain of the crucifixion. Song:
Between two thieves on Calvary Nailed to the cross you were, Insulted by your enemies Responded you in prayer.
The Tenth Station: THE REPENTANT THIEF Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (Lk 23:39-43) Prayer Lord Jesus, * there was so much sincerity * in the public confession of the repentant thief… * so much faith and trust * in the words he addressed to you. * The man really believed in your mercy. * He believed in your kingdom. * And you did not disappoint him. We often meet people who have done wrong * and would like to begin a new life. * Lord, grant that we may always be as well disposed to them * as you were to the repentant thief. * In this way, we, too, * will end the course of our life * sharing the faith and trust of the good thief, * and hearing your promise of eternal life.
115
Song:
“Remember me in your Kingdom,” Cried the repentant thief. Remember us poor sinners And bring us some relief.
The Eleventh Station: MARY AND JOHN AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (Jn 19:25-27) Prayer “Suffering, like a sword, will pierce your heart,” * had prophesied old Simeon. * On Calvary, Mary experienced the fulfillment of that prophesy in its fullness. * And once again she said in her heart, * “Let it be done to me as you said.” No one on earth loved you as your Mother did, Lord; * nor did you love any other person on earth as you loved her. * And she was there, * witness and sharer of your redeeming suffering. * By entrusting her to John, you provided for the remaining days of your Mother. * By entrusting John to her, you provided for all mankind, * for you gave us all * your very own mother as our mother. May we be as loving children to her as you were. Song:
How deep was Mary’s pain, How great her love for you. You gave her to us all To be our mother true.
The Twelfth Station: JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (Lk 23:44,46; Jn 19:28-30)
116
Prayer We were all condemned to die because of our sins, * and you took upon yourself * the death penalty that you alone did not deserve. You had only one life, dear Lord, * life all of us, * and you gave it up of your own free will, * that we might live forever. * It was our sins, it was your love for us that killed you, * dearest Jesus. Before you breathed your last * you said you were thirsty - * thirsty for love. * Today we offer you * the solace of our repentant love, Lord. * We want to love you * also for the days when we failed to do so. We want to love you for all those who refuse to love. * And may we, at the end of our stormy life, * die confidently pronouncing your last words, * “Father, into your hands I comment my spirit!” Song:
Your life you gave for all of us To save us from hell’s fire. May we for you in faithfulness Day after day aspire.
The Thirteenth Station: JESUS IS LAID IN THE TOMB Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (Mt 27:57-60) Prayer Lord Jesus, * the dark night of death has engulfed you. * The only bright lights * are the tender love of your Mother, * the faithfulness of John * and the friendship of Joseph of Arithmathea and a few others. * You are laid in the tomb * like a precious treasure placed in a chest; * like a seed hidden in the soil. Your burial gives meaning and hope to our burials. * Thanks to you, * they have become the tranquil sleep in the lap of mother earth, * trustfully awaiting the joyful awakening * when the dawn of our resurrection * will break the fetters of death forever.
117
Song:
With silent grief and tears They laid you in the tomb – The noblest of all victims, Our hope for years to come.
The Fourteenth Station: JESUS RISES FROM DEATH Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Reading (Mt 28:1-2, 5-6) Prayer Jesus, * your holy body could not undergo the corruption of the sepulcher. * The tomb could not hold you longer than it was needed * to prove that your death was real. * Now the shattered seals, * the entrance stone rolled back, * the testimony of the angel * prove that our resurrection is real. It also proves in advance * that we too shall rise. Your resurrection, Lord, * is the pattern of our resurrection even now. * It is a challenge to all of us to rise, * from the death of sin to the life of grace. Jesus, you are the Lord of the living. * Thank you, Lord, * for dying for us. * Thank you for rising for us. Song:
The doors of death you shattered, Hell’s might you did break, As gloriously you gave new life When you rose from the grave.
Prayer for the Intention of the Holy Father: Our Father…Hail Mary…Glory be… Final Prayer Leader: All-powerful and ever-living God, your only Son died for our sins and rose triumphantly from the dead. In your goodness, raise up your faithful people to be one with him in the eternal life of heaven, where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
118
All: Amen. Leader: And may the blessing of Almighty God: + Father, Son and the Holy Spirit, descend upon us and remain with us always. All: Amen.
THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION WHAT TO DO BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER CONFESSION Before Examination of conscience: 1. Recall what sins you have committed in the past. 2. How many times have you committed these sins? 3. On what occasions did you commit these sins and why? 4. Be sorry for your sins. During 1. Listen to what the priest will say to you and then make the Act of Contrition: O, my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins because I fear the loss of heaven and the pains of hell. WAYS TO MAKE A GOOD EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE 1.
2.
3.
Reflect on the basic Christian virtues: faith, hope, love, patience, purity, honesty, and see if you have practiced them or not. Review your life in the light of the Ten Commandments and see how often or how gravely you have failed to keep them. You may have your own ways to make a good examination of conscience. Remember, what is essential is to place your self in the presence of Almighty God and ask yourself, in total honesty, if He is pleased with you, and if not, why?
QUESTIONS BASED ON THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN EXAMINING ONE’S CONSCIENCE I. You shall have no false gods before me. Is God the most important reality in my life? Did I entertain doubts about my Catholic faith? Did I read books or watch shows/movies against my Catholic faith? Am I superstitious? Do I believe in fortune-telling, astrology, palm-reading, witchcraft? Have I always trusted in the Lord, especially in the midst of adversities and trials?
122
Are there any “minor gods” in my life: money, pleasures, success, popularity, power? II. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. Did I use the name of God disrespectfully? Did I curse? Did I keep the promises I made to God? Did I speak disrespectfully of Jesus, Mary and the other Saints? III. Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day. Did I participate devoutly and punctually in the Sunday Mass? Did I pray regularly every day, at least in the morning and the evening? Did I read some passage from Sacred Scripture every day? How interested am I in knowing my faith better and helping others (including my friends, officemates, classmates and relatives) do so? IV. Honor your father and mother. Did I fail to show love to my parents and other relatives? Was I disrespectful or disobedient to them? Did I help them when I could? Did I disappoint them? How? Did I respect my teachers, my parish priest and other persons in authority? Did I respect the rules of my school? V. You shall not kill. Did I hurt anybody with my words or actions? Did I refuse to help people in need when I had the opportunity and the means to do so? Did I spread negative rumors about others? Did I give bad examples? Did I do my best to make up for it? Did I keep grudges?
123
Did I apologize promptly and sincerely? Was I instrumental in leading others to sin through my words or actions? Was I respectful of other people’s opinions and beliefs? Did I take anybody’s life? Did I cause any physical injury or moral loss to others? Did I do my best to make up for it? Did I enroll in any violent organization? Did I approve or consent to, recommend, seek or actively take part in abortion? Did I contribute to the pollution of the environment? Did I take care of my physical and mental health? Did I smoke, drink immoderately, use harmful drugs, or do anything that harms my health or the health of others? VI and IX. You shall not commit impure actions & You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. Did I look at immodest pictures, shows, films...or read books and other publications that arouse in me sexual fantasies and may lead me to sin against chastity? Did I entertain immodest thoughts or consent to impure desires? Did I commit any impure actions by myself or with others? Was I prudent and reserved in dealing with people of the opposite sex, whether married or not? Did I engage in conversations or jokes that could lead myself and others to commit sins against purity? Did I engage in premarital sex? VII and X. You shall not steal & You shall not covet your neighbor’s property. Was I respectful of other people’s property? Did I damage public property? HYMN TO DON BOSCO Refrain: All hail to St. John Bosco, Father of youthful hearts; ‘Round the world, on seas and mountains, praise of your name resounds. 1.The youth are lost in wand’ring; their future bleak and dark; the snares of evil lurking. No faith, no peace, no light, no love. Don Bosco, hasten to our side. (Ref.) 2. The challenge of Christ Jesus, who rose to immortal life, is matrydom to duty, that fights, that bears, that hopes, that wins. Don Bosco, model and our guide.(Ref.) 3. Look down and see us battle with might and man we fight. The triumph of God’s glory, the aim you teach, the goal we reach, Don Bosco, lead us to the heights. (Ref.) YOUTH SERVING YOUTH (Vilbar-Baclig) We’ve been trying to understand the evil that we see; why people love to hate, how violence came to be. The answers to these questionsmay not be ours just yet, but it doesn’t mean we’ll give up living for the goals we set.

Chorus: Youth serving youth, moving out to those who need us, shaping the world that will soon be all our own. Youth serving youth, not afraid to take the challenge to be the bearers of love and signs of all that we believe. Let’s join our hands together now and build a better place, where love, peace and brotherhood are gifts to all we share. Questions need their answers still but the radiance of our faith, Will shed its light to all around us and start a brand new day! (Chorus) LIVE THE DREAM (Orendain/Gitamundoc) 1. Little John, little dreamer. You had so little in your life it seemed. But you never lost the power to dream . A dream that spoke of so much truth, of so much hope, of so much youth. But dreams need no time nor season. I know this and you're my reason. Chorus: I dream of rainbows lighting up the sky. I dream of children finding wings to fly. Because you dreamt of wolves becoming sheep Of shepherds who guard and never sleep When someone like you dreams of me It is never just a dream.

CALLED TO SERVE 1. I’m called to serve at the altar of Christ, to follow Him with my very own life, to be His own disciple, bearer of His Word, witness of His presence to the world. 2. At home or school or wherever we are, we’ll follow Jesus, our Lord, our star. We form a brotherhood of Christ’s devoted knights. From the Mass we take the strength of unity. All happily let’s avoid every sin and serve the Lord with a joy from within. Let’s give our very best and wait for no reward but to dedicate our lives to the Lord. (Chorus)
