CHAMPAGNE & CHARCOAL

CHAMPAGNE CHARCOAL 7

CHAMPAGNE & CHARCOAL

The backless stretch of sofa framed the room like a stage. The linear reliefs in the west wall raised the eye. The bezel of the chandelier held the gaze, like a Cartier watch. Dwayne Bergmann stood in the foyer, looking at it all, doing what he does when he designs — dreaming with his eyes open. There was music, champagne and hors d’oeuvres in his vision. A swanky scene, but comfortable. He could see children running around. He saw his clients, Brad and Andrea Weiner, enjoying their Naples home, wanting to extend their stay. Designing their second home, Bergmann gave the Weiners what they wanted — a home that was dramatic and subtle, luxe and liveable, somewhere they could play with their grandchildren, or have friends over for drinks before dinner at the country club. In his mind he could see them, living in a space they wanted to share. The Weiner home does not look like other homes in Quail West and though some architectural features may feel familiar, it does not look like other Florida Lifestyle Homes. Standing under the sculptural light fixture at the front door, you feel it: ‘This feels different.’ The design of the house — how the lighting selections bejewel the house, how a color palette of champagne and charcoal warms the drama of black and white, how framing out the great room wall and embedding vertical reliefs makes it look like an art installation — shows, by working with a different lens, you can elevate a home. Dwayne Bergmann Interiors brings a higher level of creativity to design, and with that comes more touchpoints, energy and emotion. “I want to invoke an emotional response,” Bergmann said. “I want that connection, that emotional reaction to occur quickly and repeatedly, and I want it to grow. I want my clients to feel, on some deeper level, a feeling of being cherished, nurtured and adored.” Reflecting on the first time she walked into her home, Andrea Weiner described the feeling as, “Oh, my God. Oh, my God. It’s beautiful. I can’t believe it’s mine. It’s everything I hoped for, everything I wanted. I am so happy.” As a designer, Bergmann listens to his clients, interprets their needs and applies his intuition to create an exclusive space they can luxuriate in. He stays within budget but exceeds expectations. “I told Dwayne I wanted that east coast glam, glitz and bling. I wanted dramatic, but I wanted it light and bright. A warm, modern feel with classic charm, some of that west coast simplicity. That’s where I think he got me,” Andrea said. “He gave me the glamour, but he also gave me a feeling of Zen.”

Walking from room to room, seeing the attention to detail, all the subtleties, Andrea said it’s a revelation every time. “The fabrics, even though we picked them with Dwayne, they will catch your eye. The chairs at the island, the chairs in the dining room, the backsplash in the kitchen, the butler’s pantry, how it all flows, there are things Dwayne just knows. His window dressings, the bedding, you fall in love over and over again,” she said. “And those light fixtures at night!” A faint flicker by day, but to see their luster at night makes the palette of silver and gold all the more sumptuous.

In the powder bath, Bergmann was bold. He painted an elongated ombré pattern on the walls, stretching out shades of graphite. He took structural details — the dome ceiling, the columns in the corners — and coated them in mica chips to make a brazen design statement. He took that champagne color thread, meant to carry the warmth and livability of the home, and saturated it with metallics. “Nobody’s living in here,” he said. “Let’s overindulge.” In the master bath, Bergmann personalized Andrea’s vanity with linear strips of mirrors that seem to rain down. Three-foot-long sconces dangle from the edges. “There are some design elements that are repeated, but they are repeated in slightly different ways,” Bergmann said. “They allow you to appreciate what’s going on without requiring you to process something unfamiliar, which lends a peace and calming.”

Nowhere can you feel that peace more than in the master suite. Pure serenity. Pure white against sterling silver. A bed of sea foam under a surreal chandelier, whose anemone-like arms fl ow out in waves.

I feel like I’m at the Ritz-Carlton or the Plaza and I don’t want to leave my room, Andrea said. She just wants to lay in the light.

Wed, Sep 10, 5:09 PM

My dear Dwayne, Although Julie has already made

your flight arrangements, I regret to inform you that you simply cannot come because I have a new and overwhelming concern as of hte last few hours, that your health

may be at serious risk if you follow through with your upcoming trip to

Indiana... Frankly, I could never live

with myself if you would develop an immediate and full-blown coronary

arrest, along with convulsive seizures, and simply die on the spot from

becoming overwhelmed with SEVERE design excitement upon seeing the

shockingly drop dead, ooh la la, over-

the-top lush, in your face, on steroids, appallingly amazing transformation that ocurred a few hours ago upon

furniture delivery. You just won’t be

able to take it! After all, Luis and the boys need you!
