fter many months spent studying online and in bubbles, getting out in the fresh air will be a welcome change of scene in more ways than one for many children. Whether just a brief activity for a few hours or an experience for a day or longer, the benefits can help improve so many areas of children’s lives, health and wellbeing and their environmental awareness. Outdoor learning can take many forms – sports, adventures, field studies, play, challenge courses, conservation, green crafts, nature, forest schools – and can help with lifelong activity and learning
as well as giving children a sense of place and community and encouraging them to care for the environment. Among the benefits of outdoor learning are the improving of selfconfidence, developing skills, knowledge, character, resilience, and a positive approach to risk-taking. Outdoor learning can help them to appreciate and value differences, enhance social skills, appreciate and value difference.

improving the wellbeing of all primary children with their Wellbeing Guides used extensively by schools and parents. Positive mental health and wellbeing are vital to children’s development. In the wake of Covid-19 and the enduring impact of the pandemic, this has never before been so widely accepted. Schools play a fundamental role in supporting children’s emotional welfare and teachers are in a prime position to teach young people the skills needed to respond to life’s daily challenges. However, with school staff often stretched for time and resources, knowing how best to support young people can present a challenge. To help the busy teacher or parent / carer with promoting the wellbeing of children, INSIDE OUT has launched a brand new digital platform, the Digital School Toolbox, packed with evidence-based resources and information based on their 5 Keys to Happiness, the equivalent of 5 fruit and veg a day for your mental health. The Digital School Toolbox has been designed to provide wellbeing support at any level with its three unique pathways: Dip In, Dive In, and All In.
d Continued... They can develop a sense of place and develop a greater engagement with the community and care for the worldwide environment with respect and understanding for the natural world and an appreciation of biodiversity and sustainability. Many schools operate forest schools which offer children opportunities to grow holistically through play, exploration and risk taking, developing confidence through hands-on experiences in a natural setting. Outdoor learning doesn’t have to involve expensive resources or facilities, it can happen anywhere from a small school playground to 100-acre woodland to a deserted beach – they may even start to enjoy maths if it’s done in an outdoor environment and using the natural resources around rather than sitting in a classroom. All these opportunities are a huge boost to children’s overall wellbeing and a boost to their mental health. INSIDE OUT is an education charity based in Reading which provides resources and help to schools in Oxfordshire and Berkshire dedicated to 24 | JANUARY 2022
For a quick wellbeing boost, the Dip In pathway includes over 125 happiness-boosting activities, giving children a toolkit of practical life skills to boost resilience and self-confidence. For curriculum-based support, the Dive In pathway contains assemblies, lesson plans, communication bites and more so teachers can cover statutory requirements without stress. Finally, for school staff looking to embed a wholeschool culture of wellbeing, the All In pathway contains INSIDE OUT’s full programme support, helping headteachers across the country put the happiness of children at the heart of school life. To access INSIDE OUT’s new Digital School Toolbox, simply head to theinsideout.org.uk. You can also follow them on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates and wellbeing inspiration. INSIDE OUT is an innovative educational charity which inspires children to be happy inside and out. It started in 2013 with one magical day out for 10 children. Since then it has grown to offer more than 70 magical days out helping more than 700 children in the Berkshire area. Its ethos is based on its 5 Keys to Happiness framework - Look Inside, Move Outside, Share More, Be Curious, Be Kind.

It is one of a series of measures set out by Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow in November. The Climate Leaders Award will help children to develop their skills and knowledge in biodiversity and sustainability, with their work recognised at an annual national awards ceremony.
Pupils will be able to progress through different levels of the award - bronze, silver and gold - in a similar way to the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which includes volunteering and extracurricular activities. Saying “education is one of our key weapons in the fight against climate change”, Mr Zahawi also confirmed plans to pilot ‘energy pods’ to replace gas and coal boilers to supply a school’s heating and hot water without carbon emissions. The pods are being tested in some schools first and could be rolled out to other public-sector buildings. All new schools being built, including 50 in 2021, would have “net zero in operation”, according to the education secretary and schools, colleges and nurseries are also being encouraged to improve the biodiversity of their grounds. Staff will also be supported to teach children about nature and their impact on the world through a “model science curriculum”, to be in place by 2023.

lifelong learning
Continue your education with a wealth of classes on offer at Oxford University, Department for Continuing Education
S
ince its inception in 1878, the Department for Continuing Education at Oxford University has offered a unique route into an Oxford education for adult learners from all backgrounds. What it shares with the rest of the University is a commitment to excellence, to supporting every student to learn and grow, and to nurturing intellectual curiosity and self-confidence. There is a national – indeed global – consensus that lifelong learning is increasingly required: for strength of democracy and community; for the world of work; for a population living longer and facing new and complex challenges; and for nourishing curiosity and a love of learning. Research in the area of brain ‘plasticity’ in recent decades confirms what Oxford Continuing Education students have known for nearly 150 years: learning new things is very, very good for
you. Advances in the field of neurology over the past several decades have clearly shown that a stimulated brain develops at any age. Faced with new stimuli, the brain forms new synaptic connections, generates new neurons, and creates neural pathways between brain cells. Adult learners of all ages, and from more than 160 countries worldwide, study together on more than 1,000 part-time Continuing Education courses with Oxford University. Classes are offered online and in Oxford during the day, evening, weekday and weekend to suit those with other responsibilities or busy timetables. Courses suit a wide variety of interests and prior qualification levels and include day and weekend events, weekly learning programmes, summer schools and undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Make the right choice There’s so much to consider when choosing a school for your child
S
ingle sex, boarding or day, a flair for music, drama or art, future sports star, special educational needs to consider or highly academic – there are so many things to throw into the mix when choosing the right school for your child. Independent schools are a popular choice for many families and in 2018 the number of pupils at Independent School Council member schools reached a record number of 529,164, with many achieving top grades in GCSEs and A-levels and progressing to the leading universities. But parents also choose independent schools because of their extracurricular activities and the approach to pastoral care. The most important thing is to match your child to the best school to suit their needs and not necessarily the one with the most impressive academic record. There are numerous schools which cater for pupils with special educational needs which might not be addressed elsewhere from specific academic requirements to selective schools or even cathedral schools, where pupils can benefit from the therapeutic experience of singing in a cathedral choir. If your child’s a budding actor or a talented musician, many schools offer impressive drama and music 32 | JANUARY 2022
departments. There are endless opportunities for pupils to get involved in school plays, orchestras or choirs – providing them with the opportunity to not just grow their talent but their confidence too. Many schools boast excellent sporting facilities with many offering provision for sports that aren’t easily accessible such as sailing, fencing or horse riding. Sports such as these often form part of the school’s extra curricular offering furthering the value for parents and children with the added benefit to physical and mental health. These extra curricular opportunities are often of particular value to pupils boarding and form a great way to increase bonds and relationships with fellow students through these shared activities. If boarding is a consideration for your child, you can rest assured knowing that pupils’ wellbeing is cared for, often in enhanced surroundings, as much as their practical needs. When it comes to making the right choice, open days and school visits are essential – ask questions, keep your eyes open and ask more questions. Don’t base your choice solely on exam league tables, the value added data will show how much pupils improve at the school. Make sure you allow plenty of time to make the right choice before making your final decision and include your child every step of the way, after all it’s their education…
