CARRIAGES LNER Carriage Group’s Newsletter no. 51 is available to download. LNER (SVR) Coach Fund has donated its remaining two carriages – GNR 2701 & TTO/Wheelchair carriage 24105 – to the SVR Charitable Trust Ltd. Severn Valley Railway (Holdings) plc has also agreed to transfer its two Gresleys – Buffet Car 643 & TTO 43612 – to the Trust on mutually acceptable terms. In consequence, the Charitable Trust now owns all nine of the Gresley teak carriages on the SVR. This secures their ownership for the long term and is a very welcome outcome. © LNER (SVR) Coach Fund Barry Coach No. 163 – The Trust have completed the mould removal. The mould will be treated, wood hardener applied to several places in the last three compartments, window frames rubbed down and then left to dry out 7
over the summer. Once the side gutters have been progressed far enough they can then get the scaffold platform height altered and commence the door overhauls. They also have done some corner post repairs. The unfortunate design of the coach (like many others) means that water off the roof is taken to the end of the coach and then runs down it and, being wood, causes certain areas to be prone to rot. This area has now had the rot removed and has been repaired with 'Repair Care', a two part filler that leaves wood filler standing, being much stronger and more durable. Not only that all the processes of repair could be undertaken in one work session. (Facebook page). The Barry Railway Carriage Trust’s new website is live at www.barryrailwaycarriagetrust.org.uk GWR Composite 6045 – A further GW(SVR) Association restoration update shows good progress. Please support this appeal if you can. The new upholstery is on order. LNER Restaurant Composite 7960 – ‘Starring Role for Kitchen Composite 7960’ (SVRLive) and ‘Charitable Trust Carriage Plays Starring Role at King's Cross’ (SVR Charitable Trust Ltd). It is also in the LNER Carriage Group’s Newsletter no. 51
GOODS AND ENGINEERS VEHICLES Caledonian Railway Covered Goods Vans 4543 and 2080 arrived safely on May 4th at their new home (Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust Facebook page). GWR Open A Goods Wagon 13154. What first seemed like just a quick service and a lick of paint to make a presentable job of this wagon has turned into months of work. The team had to remove one buffer with the application of a little heat to get the nuts to shift. New brake hangers have been fabricated with the old ones cut off. There is a portfolio of images on the Unofficial SVR forum thread, Facebook and National Preservation. GWR Toad Brake Van 17410 – The LNER Carriage Group is overlooking its regional allegiances and is restoring this GWR van to an authentic running condition on behalf of the new owners, the SVR Charitable Trust Ltd. The Group has added a new ‘Toad’ page to their website, which has details on the early stages of this repair. It is also in their Newsletter no. 51.
