2018 ANnual Report

Together, we’re ending hunger across Eastern Massachusetts.

Leadership Message

Financial Highlights

Dear Friends and Supporters, This year we distributed more healthy food than ever before. This was nearly 62 million pounds, or the equivalent of more than 51 healthy million meals. Fresh produce was 19.6 million pounds. Nearly two-thirds of our distribution was either produce, protein or dairy items—the food that is often too expensive for the people we serve, but the food they need most to stay healthy. We could not have achieved this without you, our partner agencies, our volunteers, our food and financial donors, and our network of public and private collaborators. In 2018, we reached nearly 100 percent of our goal to provide One Meal A Day to all those in need. Beginning this year, we set a new goal to ensure that every hungry person in Eastern Massachusetts has access to enough healthy food for Three Meals A Day. This goal lays the foundation of our new strategic plan to create a Hunger-Free Eastern Massachusetts by 2028. Our path to Hunger Free will be built around three key components: increasing access to nutritious food, expanding research and policy initiatives, and building network capacity.

REVENUE 19.57% .67% 57.41% 4.80% .69% 16.86%

Individual, Corporate & Foundation Contributions Contributed Services & In-Kind Gifts Food Donations Other Shared Maintenance* Government Funds

It was a critical year full of new investments to support the new strategic plan. The first was embracing a more robust nutrition measurement system called Supporting Wellness at Pantries, or SWAP. This system assures we are providing the most nutritious food possible to the people we serve.

TOTAL REVENUE

Second, we added new Team Members and resources to Health and Research to include an epidemiologist and research associate. And lastly, we upgraded our warehouse inventory and management systems, the largest capital improvement project since we built our current facility 10 years ago.

EXPENSES

Each action taken this past year was an investment in a Hunger-Free future for all we serve. In Eastern Massachusetts, 1 in 11 people is food insecure. One in 9 is a child. In these uncertain times, our work requires collaboration and commitment. We will need your continued support and dedication to achieve Hunger Free by 2028. We achieved One Meal A Day, now we will work to provide Three Meals A Day for everyone. On behalf of all of us at GBFB, thank you for standing with us and supporting our mission. Together, we can end hunger here. Sincerely,

The Real Cost of Hunger Hunger’s negative effect on health is a welldocumented area of research. Now, for the first time ever, we can also estimate the health-related financial impact of hunger in Massachusetts. A groundbreaking study sponsored by The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) and conducted by the nonpartisan research organization Children’s HealthWatch estimated the health-related cost of hunger and food insecurity in Massachusetts to be at least $2.4 billion in 2016. Medical research has shown that food-insecure adults are at higher risk for chronic ailments such as diabetes, hypertension and depression. Children are at higher risk of impaired physical and mental development.

In the report, “An Avoidable $2.4 Billion Cost,” researchers estimated healthcare, special education, and lost work time costs for conditions attributable to food insecurity, such as pulmonary disease and Type 2 diabetes. The study recommends many public and private sector measures to help alleviate food insecurity, such as strengthening government food assistance programs and screening patients for food insecurity at healthcare centers. GBFB partners with nine healthcare centers across Eastern Massachusetts to screen patients for food insecurity, provide them with local food assistance resources, and run free farmer’s market-style food distributions every month at the centers.

* Food insecurity is the inability to afford enough food for all family members to live active and healthy lives.

What If Massachusetts could eliminate food insecurity?

A conservative $2.4 billion per year would be saved in treating medical issues that are directly linked to food insecurity. Improving food security among Massachusetts residents would reduce healthcare costs for individuals, families, and the Commonwealth.

Direct Service Programs

Helping Our Partners Grow As the size of our distribution grows, our ability to help people in need is only as strong as the capacity of our more than 500 partner agencies. Because we continue to increase the amount of perishable foods we distribute—like fruits and vegetables, and “center-of-theplate” items like chicken and fish—we’re doing everything we can to help our agencies order, store and distribute this fresh, healthy food.

To get them the space, equipment and resources they need, The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) created our Capacity Grant Program, providing anywhere from $500 to $10,000 to fund improvements in transportation, refrigeration and other operational areas at our agencies. Since the launch of this program in 2013, GBFB has awarded over $627,000 in grants to 162 different projects, including everything from shelving and storage

bins, to commercial freezers and new delivery trucks. Last year was our largest year to date, as we awarded more than $138,000 to fund projects at 34 of our partner agencies. As we strive to create a hungerfree Eastern Massachusetts by 2028, our plan will include empowering our partners to grow alongside us and meet the need in their communities.

In 2018, we funded 34 projects and distributed

$138,550 IN CAPACITY GRANTS to our partner agencies.

REFRIGERATORS $49,677.50 9 grants

VEHICLES $35,400 4 grants

FREEZERS $28,413.50 8 grants

Advocacy in Action Building support for hunger-relief programs among state and federal officials is an essential part of providing healthy food to people in need. Securing funding for the Massachusetts Emergency Food Assistance Program (MEFAP) is an annual policy priority for The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB). This program provides the four Massachusetts food banks with state funding to purchase nutritious food. This year, GBFB helped secure $18 million in MEFAP funding—the largest amount in the 24-year history of the program and enough to provide more than 22 million meals across the Commonwealth. GBFB also formed Rise and Shine Massachusetts, a statewide coalition in support of passing Breakfast After the Bell legislation, which would expand access to school breakfast—and ultimately better education outcomes—to over 150,000 low-income students in Massachusetts. The bill received significant bipartisan support this year and is well-positioned as the coalition hopes the bill will become law this legislative session. Photo: Rep. Adrian Madaro (left) and Sen. Eric Lesser were GBFB’s Public Advocates of the Year last year due to their critical support for the Massachusetts Emergency Food Assistance Program in the state Legislature.

After a routine surgery, Marla found herself unable to physically keep up with her job as a nurse. Suddenly an unemployed single mother, Marla struggled to provide for her four children.

After working his entire life, Bob retired a few years ago and gets by solely on social security—which is often difficult with the cost of living in Massachusetts. Living alone and on a fixed income, Bob struggles to make ends meet.

Irma and her husband live paycheck to paycheck putting food on the table for their three small children in Lynn. While her husband has steady employment, the family struggles to keep up with their rising rent and the high cost of living. They sometimes run out of food at the end of the month as expenses add up and their food budget bottoms out.

The rising cost of living in Eastern Massachusetts makes it hard for many low-income families to put food on the table. It’s even harder with three generations under the same roof.

Dorchester, Massachusetts

With a friend’s help, Marla decided to go to the American Red Cross Food Pantry in Dorchester, a GBFB member agency, and said it was one of the best decisions she ever made. “This is a happy place,” she said about the pantry. “It’s been very beneficial for me, so I can focus on other things and not worry about ‘do I have enough food to put on the plate for my children’.” Marla goes to the pantry once a month and takes home bags full of healthy food like carrots and apples, and protein like chicken and fresh fish. “Getting the extra help when I’ve needed it from the pantry has been amazing,” Marla said. “I’ve had to worry about paying the bills and keeping the lights on, but I didn’t have to worry about food.”

“These times are tough. I run into quite a few people who have financial problems because their retirement income doesn’t match what their expenses are,” he said. A neighbor informed Bob about a GBFB Brown Bag distribution in a church in his hometown of Taunton. For the last three years Bob has been getting fresh healthy food there, such as vegetables, chicken and grains, which are his favorites. He said it makes a big difference in his life. “I’d essentially have to go without food if I didn’t have this,” Bob said. “I live alone, and the rent is a huge expense. If this wasn’t here, the alternative would be to go without.” “It’s not an obligation for anybody to do this,” Bob said. “So, I’m very grateful.”

Lynn, Massachusetts

“Between paying bills, rent and everything else, we’re just trying to survive,” she said. Irma’s three children, including Daisy, 5, are all current or former students at Connery Elementary School, where GBFB runs a monthly School-based Pantry. “We’re able to get a lot of vegetables from the pantry,” Irma said. “Daisy loves the broccoli.” Irma said having the pantry located at the school is a rewarding opportunity. “It always helps out at the end of the month when we run out of food to fill our pantry,” she said. “And this helps us feed our kids.”

Plymouth, Massachusetts

Joan and her retired husband, both disabled, welcomed their son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren into their South Shore home. With a bigger household, the family’s food budget became overstretched. “Being disabled and not working put a real big strain on us financially and we needed some help,” Joan said. Joan started supplementing the family’s weekly food budget with trips to the Plymouth Salvation Army food pantry, a member agency of GBFB. Joan takes home six bags of healthy food every month, which helps her get by on the family’s limited income. “It helps our family eat a well-balanced meal, which is especially important when you have little kids,” Joan said. “They need to eat right. The food pantry’s been a lifesaver for our family.”

Getting to Hunger Free As we strive to fulfill our mission of ending hunger here, The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) embarked this year on a new strategic direction to create a Hunger-Free Eastern Massachusetts by 2028. This means providing access to enough healthy food to provide three meals a day to every food insecure person in Eastern Massachusetts.

55,000 HOURS put in by 22,000 enthusiastic volunteers

The three key pieces of this initiative will be increasing access to nutritious food, expanding our research and policy initiatives, and building the capacity of our network. Achieving this goal will take significant investments from GBFB Team Members, our partner agencies, food and financial donors, and many others. In the next year, GBFB will develop a major fundraising campaign to reach this goal, and we owe a significant debt to the two Founding Contributors of Hunger Free 2028— Becky and Bruce Epstein.

Partners for Impact: Boston Scientific Boston Scientific has been a supporter of The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) for more than a decade, donating 700 hours of volunteer time and helping to provide more than 1 million meals to our neighbors in need across Eastern Massachusetts. In 2018, Boston Scientific deepened their commitment to ending hunger here by taking the lead role as the Presidential sponsor of Festival—our largest annual fundraising event. Thanks to their dedicated leadership, GBFB raised enough money through Festival to provide more than 3.4 million healthy meals. Boston Scientific is a GBFB Partner for Impact, one of the 150 businesses and organizations that provide more than just financial support to GBFB and play a key role in helping us achieve our mission. Bringing Families Together Launched in Spring 2018, Families for Impact is a unique volunteer experience for donors of The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) that gets the entire family involved in community service, even children as young as 5! In May 2018, 12 families joined GBFB Team Members on site to learn about hunger in Eastern Massachusetts and support GBFB’s work of distributing healthy food by sorting fresh produce for our member agencies and the clients they serve. Since its inception, the number of participating families has doubled. Both parents and children enjoy the experience of giving back together. Photo: GBFB supporters and their families volunteered at a “Families for Impact” event this fall to sort and package fresh fruits and vegetables for people in need.
