ABSTRACT The study investigated the Role of the Student‟s Music Preference as a Coping Mechanism towards Academic Stress, is conducted to have an In-depth understanding and apprehension on how much it plays a huge role in the students regarding their music preferences as their coping mechanism towards academic stress. The researchers selected the respondents based on their looking qualities that align with the researchers' study. Moreover, the chosen respondents should be qualified as a musically inclined, melomaniac, musicophile, or melophile by using Purposive sampling technique, the chosen respondents together with their answers stating their perceptions and experiences to the questionnaire provided by the researchers through the use of Google forms (Gforms). As a result of this research, the majority of the students with the use of their music preferences serve them as their Coping mechanism towards their academic stress which at some point also improves their academic performance, be more focused, productive, and even modify their stressful feelings pertaining to what they feel every day. The Role of Music Preference helps the students to identify their likes and dislikes and helps them to use their preferred music as for their coping strategy most specifically through academic matters. Additionally, it even makes them comfortable and happy because of music that has even been a part of their lives.

INTRODUCTION
Music has the potential to influence mood, feelings, and thoughts; it has the ability to change the emotional and physical status of people, whether they are in bad, good, or sad moods (N. Ahmad, A. Rana, 2015). Furthermore, listening to music can lower your productivity by a minimum of 10% (G. Column, 2019). To address this gap in knowledge and overcome previous shortcomings by thoroughly examining music effects across endocrine, autonomic, cognitive, and emotional domains of the human stress response (M. Thoma, R. Marca, U. Nater 2013). Say that many students listen to music to alleviate the emotional effects of stress and anxiety when engaged in a complex cognitive processing, such as studying for a test, completing homework assignments, or while reading and writing. (Cockerton, Moore, & Norman, 1997). The music, however, is a reality in a person‟s development, and that it has emotional implications, including stress regulation. (Caballero et al., 2017) In this research study, state has been taken as the participants‟ emotional experience, assuming that it includes a subjective, as well as cognitive and behavioral component (Scherer, 2004). On this basis, people may assess their mood and emotional state using bipolar value axes such as, for example, pleasant versus unpleasant, following the circumplex model of affect. The circumplex model of affect by Russell (1980). One of the strategies in mind is using music in classroom activities. Music is one of the few activities that involve using the whole brain. It is intrinsic to all cultures and can have surprising benefit. The power of songs to affect memory is quite intriguing. Cortina et.al (2011) cited that experiments have been conducted to prove if listening to music can improve the memory skills of students, one of which is popularly known as the “Mozart effect”. Although, Caballero, Pablo, Carrión, & Olivenza (2017) challenge that the mere fact of listening to music causes a change in emotions without taking into account interaction with the context in question. Then further research needs to be carried out into whether the changes that are recorded when a person listens to music are the result of the subject‟s emotional response or of the “perceived” emotion or that recognized in the piece of music, as some authors suggest (Ogg & Sears, 2017). 1
However, the relationship between music and reduction in other forms of stress, especially academic stress among adolescents remains, and listening to music has also been associated with neurological stimulation and alleviation of anxiety (Fukui & Toyoshima, 2008; Koyama et al., 2009; Wachi et al., 2007). The Personalization of music listening through MP3 players and online radio stations allows adolescents to listen to music throughout the day (Vogel et al., 2009). Negative such as violent songs led to more aggressive thoughts in three different measures: More aggressive interpretations when looking at ambiguous words, an increased speed with which people read aggressive compared to non-aggressive words, and a greater proportion of people completing aggressive words when filling in blanks on forms given to them during the study. One way to put these findings, says the authors, is that participants who listened to violent rock songs then interpret the meaning of ambiguous words such as "rock" and "stick" in an aggressive way. The study carried out by (Hernández, 2005) on a sample of 28,559 students from 16 universities, concluded that 20.84% claimed to suffer anxiety when facing exams. These results have been supported by later studies (Álvarez, Aguilar, & Lorenzo, 2012). In general, stress is correlated with negative mood. Besides, stress has several effects on mood such as anxiety, lack of motivation, overwhelm, irritability, sadness among others (McKinzie, Burgoon, Altamura, & Bishop, 2006; Starr, Dienes, Li, & Shaw, 2019). One of the main reasons why people listen to music is to regulate their emotions (Chamorro-Premuzic & Furnham, 2007), including the search for a state of relaxation (Goethem, 2011). Music also appears to act as a distractor, facilitating muscle relaxation, which helps to alleviate pain (Mitchell, Raymond, & Brodie, 2006). Exams of any kind are usually considered to be the most stressful academic activities in the formal academic system (Cassady & Johnson, 2002; Kurt, Balci, & Kose, 2014; Putwain, 2007). The pre-existing studies that the researchers provided are all connected to the research problem which supports our claims. In the study, the negative side of music preferences of the students in responding to their academic stress showed that according to found evidence music has the potential to influence feeling, mood, and thoughts (N. Ahmad, A. Rana, 2015). Whether it can be helpful or not. All the evidence stated helps strengthen and make the researchers' studies. 2
As such, the researchers aim to determine the root behind the role of music preferences of the students in responding to their academic stress. This research also seeks to know how the preferred music of the students can help them with
their academic performances and the
outcome of their work. Furthermore, this study aims to determine the beneficiaries that the students can get by listening to their music preference. With all insights presented, the researchers have gained confidence in pursuing a study that aims to determine the Role of the Students‟ Music Preferences as a Coping Mechanism Towards their Academic Stress Our Lady of Perpetual Succor College School Year 2020-2021. More particularly, this study will seek answers to the following questions: 1.What are the student‟s perceptions towards academic stress? 2.How can music help students ease their stressful feeling towards their studies? 3.What is the role of music preferences towards student‟s academic stress?
The main goal of this study is to know the role of students‟ music preferences as a coping mechanism towards academic stress. The findings and result of this study will be of help to the following people because of its benefits:
a. Students Administrators- This study will enable the school administrators to broaden their understanding about the outcome of students‟ music preference responding to their academic stress. The pieces of information will enable the administrators to ensure that music promote students focusing on academics and less stress by listening to music. b. Guidance Counsellors- The present study may be beneficial to the guidance counsellors as it will help counsellors approach students in regards with the productivity, performance, and conduct of students experiencing stress in terms of academics and selfassessment that correlated to student's academic stress in school. With that guidance counsellors may also have collaboration with parents and school staff in conducting counselling
like
Parent
Teacher
Conference
(PTC),
parent–teacher
association/organization (PTA/PTO), and parent–teacher–student association (PTSA). 3
Furthermore, this study will enable counsellors to conduct more constructive programs and seminars like webinar, and FB pages that can address concerns about students responding to their academic stress, also with the help of their music preference. c. Teachers- The findings of the study may help increase the collaboration between School counsellors and teachers. They will promote a suggestion which is brought up to teachers many argue that the role of a students‟ music preference in responding to their academic stress might be a distraction for them to focus with their academic task. But rather listening to their preferred music helps them focus, and puts them in a focused and happy mood, which would improve performance in schools and the stress levels in school. That music not just only helps to eliminate „white noises‟ but also creates a sustained supportive ambiance. As a result, it may make the students feel less frustrated, allowing them to complete tasks faster and more efficiently. d. Students- The gathered data in this study will be useful for students' perceptions of academic stress that are connected to the role of music preferences towards a student's academic stress. This research will be of great assistance to students in selecting their own preferred music. However, this study also says that music can be a helpful medicine, a stress-relieving medication. This will open their eyes that music is not just music; they're going to understand that music will help a student in coping with his/her academic stress. e. Parents- This study may facilitate, individual, parent-teacher or parent-consultations and discussions to ensure the conditions of everyone that their preferred music does really help students to respond from their Academic stress in school which could be a good way on how they can cope up with their Academic stress by just with their Music preferences that can boost up their emotions, physically and mentally. Furthermore, the gathered data for this study can help parents to know a proper way of parenting like Authoritative parenting that helps eliminate or reduce stress. It can also help advocate for their children's academic career, preferred music and become flexible and welcome to open communication that can be considered as an action or help in terms of preventing academic stress. This study enables parents to supervise in terms of learning and
4
behaviour of their child and have a balanced communication and relationship with their children‟s.
f.
Future Researchers- This study will be used as a guide for prospective researchers
who want to perform research closely related to this current study. The research has a substantial minority of studies regarding the role of music preferences according to the academic stress of the student. The Insufficient evidence and information stated in the relationship of music preferences to academic performance and stress in the Philippines are commonly unfamiliar. Publishing this research material will give advantage to the future researchers that will conduct research that is related or associated with this study. The content of this study can serve as their basis and can develop their pre-existing knowledge and information.
Research Title: The Role of Student‟s Music Preference as a Coping Mechanism towards Academic Stress
Statement of the Problem This study aims to determine the role of student‟s music preference as a coping mechanism towards academic stress More specifically, it will seek answers to the following questions: 1. How does music influence students with their academic performance? 2.What role can music play in coping with academic stress? 3. How can music be used as a coping mechanism for academic stress? 4.What aspect of music has the greatest potential for relieving stress? 5.What makes music as a mediator?

Review of Related Literature and Studies This chapter includes the review of related literature and studies which the researchers have pursued to shed light on the topic under study.
Foreign Literature A. Music Preference as a Coping Mechanism An Article entitled “Music listening as a means of stress reduction in daily life” (2015) these authors says that the relationship between music listening and stress is inconsistently recorded across research, with the majority of them taking place in controlled situations. In addition, the psychobiological mechanisms underlying a possible stress mechanism are unknown. Using both subjective and objective stress measures, it investigated the possible stressrelieving effects of music listening in daily life. In an ambulatory assessment sample, fifty-five stable university students were tested both during a normal term week (five days) and during an interview. But on the other hand the author Laura Birdgestock, the controversy about whether or not listening to music while learning will help you perform better continues. The bad news for those who believe that listening to music keeps their brain alive is that most recent research shows that silence is the best study environment. You might be shocked to learn that researchers have discovered that presenting these results has almost no power. However, psychologist Francis Rauscher, whose work on music and the brain unintentionally sparked the “play classical music to your unborn child” craze, says she still maintains that the right relation between music and the brain will strengthen certain cognitive abilities (like spatial intelligence) for a short period of time (about 10 minutes). Also based on Thompson and Samuel Harvey (2021) entitled “The sounds of Coping: Listening to music as a coping mechanism for college students" verbal explanations of everyday college stressors and associated coping mechanisms, the stress faced by college students and their means of accompanying coping mechanisms. The point is to show that listening to music as a leisure activity is a common coping strategy among college students. 6
Students cited listening to music as a coping method rather than any other practice for calming down from the burden of schoolwork, tests, and relationships, the findings shed light on college students' stress beliefs and perceptions, as well as the coping abilities of listening to music.
B. Potential of Music As Music has a lot of potential to influence our emotions, the author of a News article Jane Collingwood speaks about the power of music to reduce stress. As it is well known that music has a relaxing influence. It has a one-of-a-kind relationship with our emotions, making it a highly powerful stress relief tool. Since music has the ability to consume our attention, it serves as a diversion while also assisting in the exploration of emotions. Furthermore, one of the parts of Laura Birdgestock article "What‟s The Best Music For Studying?". A doctor, Dr. Nick Perham's research at the University of Wales shows that listening to music while learning is beneficial. He's also discovered that music with lyrics is particularly distracting when working on a task that requires concentration. Nevertheless, Perham and Nass believe that music will assist students in achieving the optimal learning state. As a result, it seems that listening to music you like before starting school can be helpful. In another published material, an article entitled "Music listening as a means of stress reduction in daily life" (Linnenman, et. al, 2015). The main focus of the previous literature is to examine the stress-reducing influence of music listening in daily life. Moreover, it discusses the fact about music especially true given the prevalence of music in daily life. Music listening has been shown to relieve stress in both subjective and objective ways in both experimental and clinical environments. It shows that music with a high valence and low arousal had a positive influence on heart rate and skin conductance recovery after a stressful event. Furthermore, some research supports and suggests that listening to music in everyday life has a stress-relieving outcome. Lastly, it showed that listening to music increased feelings of calmness.
7
Local Literature A. Music Preference as a Coping Mechanism The author Dr. Myra Garces-Bacsal (2011) entitled “The wonders of listening to music” a news which point, results of the study indicate that music has a significant impact on the development of a positive sense of self in individuals. She said that Music helps to define a person's personality. Individuality is something that people aspire for. They build a self-portrait based on their likes and dislikes. Such interests are best conveyed through music, as browsing through a person's carefully selected playlist will provide a sense of who they are. Music is both a tool and a mediator of educational environment. Also music fosters a feeling of belonging. Wherein Individuals form subcultures with those who have similar tastes based on their personal preferences. When you realize that other people have similar perceptions of a song, you don't feel so alone as you go through life's challenges. Apart from that from a News article entitled “Music while studying - helpful or not?” that music is one of the most amazing things that has ever existed on this planet, but some people are unable to understand it. Rather music is similar to our house. It has become an essential part of our daily routine. Isn't it possible that every time we hear our favorite songs, we get a good feeling. That is because it brings us a sense of relaxation and helps us feel at ease. We can easily process its rhythmic flow and hear it's lovely melody from there, we find it is as the reliever of our stress. Also from another author Carlos J. P (2016) that According to some research, only certain types of music are beneficial while learning. The "Mozart effect," a series of results that indicate that listening to Mozart's music improves short-term output on certain mental tasks, is the most frequently cited analysis, according to the researcher. Of course, whether or not music aids study is entirely up to the individual. There are those who cannot study well while music is playing, and there are those who need music in order to focus better.
8
B. Potential of Music The author of a News entitled "The wonders of listening to music" Dr. Myra GarcesBacsal (2011) discussed that in today's culturally changing world, music is one of the few constants left. Its extraordinary capacity to catch and convey intensely personal feelings. Moreover, no other movement has ever been able to bring people of various races, traditions, and backgrounds together in the way that music has. Furthermore, music helps to define a person's personality. Individuality is something that people aspire for. They build a self-portrait based on their likes and dislikes. Such interests are best conveyed through music, as browsing through a person's carefully selected playlist will reveal a lot about who they are based on the songs they like and the artists they follow. In other terms, music is permeable, allowing one's own life experiences and meaning to seep into one's perception of a song. Also some musicall inclined or people who love music have a sense of empowerment in having those playlists reflect what they are feeling or experiencing. In another News article entitled "Music while studying- helpful or not?" from Carlos J.P. (2016). It focuses on the characteristics of music and why someone is unable to acknowledge its importance. On another hand, it also focuses on the positive aspects of music like the claim that music is like our home. It has become an integral part of our daily routine. Besides, a person who is listening might agree that hearing their favourite music gives them a pleasant feeling. Also It gives a feeling of calm and comfort in particular. As it can easily process its rhythmic flow and hear it's lovely melody from there. That relates why we find it is as the reliever of our stress. Furthermore, some research suggests that only certain types of music are beneficial while learning. Like classical music (shown to increase your concentration levels), music at 60 beat-per-minute (that state thinking and creativity are said to be easier), and other music that fit in occasionally situations that bring people to a better version of themselves and help them in according to their needs.

Foreign Studies A. Music Preference as a Coping Mechanism According to an Article by Jiang J, et. al (2016) In today‟s culture tension has become a significant health threat. A researcher studied music preferences as a mediator. It indicates that before and after listening to music, participants rated their levels of stress and state anxiety, as well as their levels of valence and arousal for music, music preference, and familiarity. The findings showed that arousal and valence levels, as well as the degree of music preference, predicted tension and state anxiety levels, as well as the consequences of valence and arousal on stress realignment. On the other hand, a Journal from Vella E., Mills G. (2017) that the focus of the researchers was to see if music would help to establish a relation between personality and music preference. The emotional uses of music were all positively associated with trait neuroticism, perceived stress, and depression ratings. When it comes to music choice, the current findings support researching personality alongside musical preferences, and they shed light on how negative affect can manipulate emotional music use.
An Article stated by Kevin Droe (2006) On a regular basis, music education means interacting with students' musical interests. Musical taste, mood, and preference can be difficult to research because they are elusive aspects of human nature. Music taste determined by what people listen to or by the type of music that they prefer, is like or disliking a musical stimulus all there is to preference. Students' preferences for music played in class can have an influence on the types of aspects of their experience, including enjoyment and success, motivation to practice and enhance task activity, and musical development. A study from Mulligan (1999) music has been used to enhance people‟s emotional well-being. Music can also serve other important roles in people‟s lives, including cognitive, spiritual, physical, behavioural, and social functions. Some researchers have found that music exposure enhances cognitive performance and/or academic achievement (Oliver,1997; Schreiber, 1988) Rather music may help students focus on mental tasks such as studying, depending on their learning styles.
10
In another previous study a Journal stated by Arnaud Cabanac, et. al (2013) they found that listening to fun music while taking an academic exam helped students overcome tension. However, the reasons for the higher test results remained a mystery. The „Mozart effect' is a temporary boost in “spatial temporal reasoning time to more stressful and difficult tasks, and achieve higher grades. Also, listening to fun music while taking an academic exam helped students overcome tension, devote more time to more stressful and difficult tasks, and achieve higher grades.
On the other hand, News based on Sharuna Segaren (2019) many students agree that listening to music while learning or revising allows them to "concentrate easier." But some people also say that they can't rewrite because it's too quiet without music. Oppositely, some people find music to be extremely distracting and need complete silence in order to work or study efficiently. Though, listening to music can make you a happier person, as music releases pleasurable emotions and increases dopamine levels. Music that is relaxing also helps students with stress and anxiety, thus leading them to study more efficiently.
Also from an Article stated by Janina A. M. Lehman, Tina Suefert (2017) According to both the Mozart effect and the arousal-mood-hypothesis, background music will potentially aid learning outcomes. While the Mozart effect assumes that background music has a direct effect on cognitive ability, the arousal-mood hypothesis assumes that there is mediation. However, we discovered a connection between background music and working memory capacity when it came to comprehension the higher the learners' working memory capacity, the more they learned with background music.
11
B. Potential of Music According to the previous study of Jiang, et, al (2016), entitled "The mechanism of music for reducing psychological stress: Music preference as a mediator".Its a study of the influence of music listening following induced stress was conducted in order to explore the mechanisms by which music could relieve psychological stress. In order to determine the relationship between music towards stress. Every individual included indicated their before and after listening to music and ranked the level of their stress. As the results of this study revealed that the levels of arousal and valence, and the degree of music preference predicted tension by state anxiety levels. Other relevant study by Vella, E., & Mills, G. (2017) with a title of "Personality uses of music, and music preference: The influence of openness to experience and extraversion." that focuses about music can be used to create a connection between personality and music taste. Moreover, about music's emotional uses were all linked to higher levels of trait neuroticism, perceived stress, and depression. On the other hand, a musical taste, mood, and preference are enigmatic facets of human nature, they can be difficult to study, according to Kevin Droe (2006).
Mulligan (1999) said people's mental well-being has been improved by music. Other essential functions of music in people's lives include cognitive, spiritual, physical, behavioral, and social functions.
Furthermore, in a previous study entitled "Music and academic performance." by Cabanac, et. al (2013) talk about students being able to conquer stress, devote more time to more stressful and demanding activities, and gain higher grades by listening to enjoyable music while taking an academic exam. Similarly, Segarin (2019) said a large percentage of students agree that listening to music while learning or revising allows them to "concentrate easier." Moreover, music can make you happier by releasing pleasurable feelings and increasing dopamine levels.
Another published study entitled " The Influence of Background Music on Learning in the Light of Different Theoretical Perspectives and the Role of Working Memory Capacity." by Janina, et. al (2017) also discusses that the influence of background music on learning is investigated in this study. According to both the Mozart effect and the arousal-mood-hypothesis, background music 12
will potentially aid learning outcomes. Furthermore, no significant effects of background music or working memory capacity on recall performance were found, nor was there a relationship between the two. When it came to comprehension, however, we discovered a connection between background music and working memory ability: the higher the learners' working memory capacity, the better they learned with background music.
Local Studies A. Music Preference as a Coping Mechanism Constantino Jr (2008) in his Article “Music Preference of College Students of the University of Baguio”. That the music's presence and relative influence on them. In which Religious music is the most preferred type of music while rap is least preferred, the community factor has the greatest influence on the choice of music of the students and music greatly affects the personal and academic life of the students. Desserie T. Maynes-Blanco, Mecmack A. Nartea (2020) from their Article stated that Filipino students scored well academically, but this cannot be attributed solely to music since not all students listen to music. It was also discovered that students spent the majority of their time listening to loud music that is most frequently heard, but students favour Pop music. There was also no evidence of a connection between the student's year level and the role of listening. An article from Mapua University (2016) they stated that College life can be challenging, particularly for students who are managing academics and extracurricular activities. Several studies have been performed to show that listening to music will aid in the improvement of some mental faculties, including mental math abilities, keep reading to learn more about music and it will help you with your studies. According to some research, listening to music before doing an assignment may be beneficial. It not only enhances one's mental math skills, but it also improves one's concentration and memory, both of which are essential when learning. Additionally, it has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression. Music's effects, on the other hand, can differ from one individual to the next.
13
B. Potential of Music Costantino Jr. (2008) in his previous study entitled "Music Preference of College Students of the University of Baguio" That the study conducted aims to determine the tastes of University of Baguio students in terms of music, as well as the degree and relative influence of that music on them. The following findings of the previous study are based on the data gathered. With the claims of a certain genre of music with its ranking. In which Religious music is the most popular or known, while rap is the least popular. The culture element has the greatest influence on music tastes. Another related study by Maynes-Blanco, D. & Nartea, M. (2020) entitled "Music and Academic Performance: Impact of Listening to Music of Filipino Millennials" at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, with the aim of determining the influence of listening to music on students' academic success. It reveals that Filipino students acquired good grades but cannot be directly attributed to music alone because not all students listen to music. Furthermore, an article from Mapua University (2016) said that several studies have shown that listening to music can help with the development of certain mental faculties, such as mental math abilities. Continue reading to find out more about music and how it can benefit your studies. Additionally, listening to music before doing an assignment can be beneficial; it improves not only one's mental math skills, but also one's attention and memory, which are both important while studying. It has also been shown to help with anxiety and depression. The influence of music, on the other hand, can be a domino effect factor to certain individuals.
Synthesis One of the most difficulties that most student‟s encounter is their stress through academics, still with the help of music some student‟s serve music as a coping mechanism to lessen the stress they feel with academic works in school. But does music really help student‟s ease their academic stress through their music preferences as a coping mechanism? If music has a relationship within our stresses it means that using both subjective and objective stress
14
measures, it investigated the possible stress-relieving effects of music listening in daily life (Alexandra Linnenman et.al 2015).
As music has a lot of potential to our emotions, the author of a News article Jane Collingwood speaks about the power of music to reduce stress. As it is well known that music has a relaxing influence. It has a one-of-a-kind relationship with our emotions, making it a highly powerful stress relief tool. Since music has the ability to consume our attention, it serves as a diversion while also assisting in the exploration of emotions.
There are several potential benefits of music that's why it plays an important role for certain individuals. In a news article entitled "the wonders of listening to music." by GarcesBacsal (2011) discussed that music plays a major role in developing an individual‟s healthy sense of self. Music helps to define a person's personality. Individuality is something that people aspire for. They build a self-portrait based on their likes and dislikes. Such interests are best conveyed through music, as browsing through a person's carefully selected playlist will show a lot about self-reflection to music she/he listens to.
Also from another author Carlos J. P (2016) that According to some research, only certain types of music are beneficial while learning. The "Mozart effect," a series of results that indicate that listening to Mozart's music improves short-term output on certain mental tasks, is the most frequently cited analysis, according to the researcher. According to an Article by Jiang J, et. al (2016), in today‟s culture tension has become a significant health threat. A researcher studied music preferences as a mediator. It indicates that before and after listening to music, participants rated their levels of stress and state anxiety, as 15
well as their levels of valence and arousal for music, music preference, and familiarity. The findings showed that arousal and valence levels, as well as the degree of music preference, predicted tension and state anxiety levels, as well as the consequences of valence and arousal on stress realignment.
Additionally, Eagle news a news article indeed said that Music is one of the most amazing things that have ever existed on this planet, but some people are unable to understand it. By the means that generally they are a specific type of people who enjoy listening to music. But of course music is like our house, it has become an integral part of our daily routine. Isn't it true that every time we hear our favorite song we get a good feeling? That is because, in a nutshell, music is wonderful, and it is an important part of our lives, as for some student‟s music does really matter regardless of how they feel, what they have in mind.
In today's culture listening to music can have a large percentage of influence, according to Jiang, et, al (2016). Written in their article entitled "The mechanism of music for reducing psychological stress: Music preference as a mediator." A study of the influence of music listening following induced stress was conducted in order to explore the mechanisms by which music could relieve psychological stress. In order to determine the relationship between music towards stress. Every individual included indicated their before and after listening to music and ranked the level of their stress.
Vella E., Mills G. (2017) stated that the focus of the researchers was to see if music would help to establish a relation between personality and music preference. Wherein emotional uses are all associated with one another with trait neuroticism, perceived stress, and depression ratings. Current findings support researching personality alongside musical preferences when looking into music preference, and they shed light on how negative affect can influence emotional music usage.
People's mental well-being has been improved by music. Other essential functions of music in people's lives include cognitive, spiritual, physical, behavioral, and social functions, Mulligan (1999). Furthermore, in a study entitled "Music and academic performance." by Cabanac, et. al 16
(2013) talk about students gaining higher grades by listening to enjoyable music while taking an academic exam. According to what Segarin (2019) said that a large percentage of students agree that listening to music while learning or revising allows them to "concentrate easier." Moreover, music can make you happier by releasing pleasurable feelings and increasing dopamine levels. On a regular basis, music education means interacting with student‟s musical interests. Musical taste, mood, and preference can be difficult to research because they are elusive aspects of human nature. Music taste is determined by what people listen to or by the type of music that they prefer. Is like or disliking a musical stimulus all there is to preference. Student‟s' preferences for music played in class can have an influence on the types of aspects of their experience, including enjoyment and success, motivation to practice and enhance task activity, and musical development (Kevin Droe 2006).
According to the author, Janina A. M. Lehman & Tina Suefert (2017 )the Mozart effect and the arousal-mood-hypothesis, background music will potentially aid learning outcomes. While the Mozart effect assumes that background music has a direct effect on cognitive ability, the arousal-mood hypothesis assumes that there is mediation. However, a connection between background music and working memory capacity when it came to comprehension the higher the learners' working memory capacity, the more they learned with background music.
Additionally, the study entitled "Music Preference of College Students of the University of Baguio", Costantino Jr. (2008). The study aims to determine the tastes of University of Baguio students in terms of music, as well as the degree and relative influence of that music on them. With the claims of a certain genre of music with its ranking. In which Religious music is the most popular or known, while rap is the least popular. The culture element has the greatest influence on music tastes
Apart from that stated by (Desserie T. Maynes-Blanco, Mecmack A Nartea 2020) study found that Filipino students scored well academically, but this cannot be attributed solely to music since not all students listen to music. It was also discovered that students spent the majority of their time listening to music wherein loud music is the most frequently heard, but students favour 17
Pop music. Thus, there was also no evidence of a connection between the year level and the influence of listening.
Furthermore, an article from Mapua University (2016) with several studies has shown that listening to music can help with the development of certain mental faculties, such as mental math abilities. Additionally, listening to music before doing an assignment can be beneficial; it improves not only one's mental math skills, but also one's attention and memory, which are both important while studying. It has also been shown to help with anxiety and depression. The influence of music, on the other hand, can be a domino effect factor to certain individuals.
METHODOLOGY
The research design that is being used in the present study is a Case study, which is an in-depth investigation of a single person, group, event or community. According to (Creswell, 2002) a case study is a problem to be studied, which will reveal an in-depth understanding of a “case” or bounded system, which involves understanding an event, activity, process, or one or more individuals. Additionally, this research design also establishes the use to explain, describe or explore events or phenomena in the everyday contexts in which they occur. The research design will help the researchers to determine the role of the students' music preferences as a coping mechanism towards academic stress. The said design will be used to know the perceptions of students‟ through the role of their music preference as a coping mechanism toward academic stress and the correlation of music preferences in eliminating academic stress which helps students to improve their academic performance. In this study, the researchers target informants are the Grade-11 students from 11-St.John from the afternoon shift under the STEM strand of Our lady of Perpetual Succor College Olopsc from
18
batch 2020-2021. An exact of five (5) informants from Grade-11 St. John will be used in this study. That is just sufficient in being able to focus on informants' perception according to music preferences as a coping mechanism towards academic stress. The chosen informants of the study are based on the researcher‟s looking qualities that align with the researchers study. Moreover, the chosen informants should be qualified as a musically inclined, melomaniac, musicophile, or melophile. Furthermore, the study that the researchers conducted uses Purposive Sampling technique. The Sampling approach used in this study is also referred to as judgment sampling, involves the researcher using their expertise to select a sample that is most useful to the purposes of the research. In order
to select the informants. In order to get the exact number and
appropriate informants, the chosen five (5) informants from Grade-11 St. John is to determine on how they respond with their academic stress by the help of their music preferences, with that being said those 5 (five) informants should be qualified as a musically inclined or more likely rely on music when they feel stress with academics. The research process will be conducted in the Senior High School Department under Afternoon shift selectively from Grade 11 students from 11-St. John of Our Lady of Perpetual Succor College. OLOPSC is a private educational institution located at General Ordonez Street, Concepción Uno, Marikina City, a non-sectarian, educational institution, offering preschool, basic and higher education. It was founded by Dionisio Salvador Sr. in 1978. The chosen target locale will be attainable and suitable for the researcher‟s to make their study workable. The Researchers will use a survey form with open-ended questions, wherein the main set-up in gathering information and to analyze data that will be distributed to the Grade 11 students from 11-St.John under Afternoon shift of STEM Strand from Our lady of Perpetual Succor College. The researchers will use a survey form with open-ended questions with the help of an application called Google Form (Gform) in gathering pertinent data for this inquiry process. The data gathered will be analysed through coding. After the data collection process, the researchers will analyze patterns and themes within the responses of the informants. This will become the basis for researchers to come up with a solid description of the role of students‟ music preferences as a coping mechanism towards academic stress.

Table 1 shows the Benefits that students get by listening to your favorite music. Most of the majority of the student‟s is that indeed Listening to your favorite has it benefits of what you can get from it is because it can help them to remove their stresses from school works and it improve more of their performances on doing school activities. Moreover it somehow boosts up their energy emotionally and physically. As the respondent said that “Listening to my favorite music I feel relaxed, calms, and makes me joyful, allowing me to focus on my schoolwork or things that I enjoy. Furthermore, I feel it relieves all my stress or problems and will also help me lighten my mood”. With that being said, listening to your favorite music helps a person to be more focused on their responsibilities such as doing school work. To bring together, “the benefits of listening to your favorite music helps a person as what you can get from it” and some said that.” By listening to music, I can be happy and calm myself down, in an instance that when I am sad or angry, I become a person who doesn't like to talk to anyone and 20
distance myself or build a wall. However, by just listening to music, I can calm down and get back to who I am really.” It means that music is not just only a thing that you listen to but something that you can lean on whenever you don‟t feel yourself music speaks for you. The respondent said “It helps me reduce stress. It additionally helps me calm down whenever I am having an anxiety attack.” The researcher found out that for some student‟s listening to your favorite music helps you in any form whether it‟s school related and if it‟s about releasing anxieties from it, truly it does have benefits from a lot of people, specifically students who find music to lean on. This findings is supported within a Literature from Carlos J.P (2016) stating that it has become an integral part of our daily routine. Besides, a person who is listening might agree that hearing their favorite music gives them a pleasant feeling. Also in study of Alexandra Linnemen et. al (2015) that the relationship between music listening and stress is inconsistently recorded across research, with the majority of them taking place in controlled situations. Using both subjective and objective stress measures, it investigated the possible stress-relieving effects of music listening in daily life.

Table 2 The Role of Music Preference as a Coping Mechanism Towards to their Academic stress
Table 2 shows the Perception of the students towards Academic stress. 21
Most of the student‟s common problem is stress through academics, which gives barriers on them in finishing a ton and fully loaded tasks to finish. As the respondent said “In my own understanding, academic stress usually comes from tests, grades, school works and especially the pressure that we feel in order to reach our family's and/or teacher's expectation.” Other student‟s think that academic stress varies from pressure that you feel from people who expect a lot from you, even from exams, and projects that need to be completed. The respondent said “Academic stress is a kind of stress that makes you change yourself somehow. To the point that you get irritated easily, distance yourself from everyone you know, and sometimes, it could get worse and put you in a state of mental instability.” Another student thinks that academic stress somehow can change you, wherein it makes you easily irritated and could affect your mental stability. The researcher perceives that Academic stress comes in any form, it's specifically rooted from expectations, and even so much school work to do wherein it also changes someone.
This findings is supported within a Literature from K. Jayasankara Reddy et.al (ND) stated that Academic stress has been identified as the primary cause of these alarming figures, explain this stress as an interaction between environmental stressors, student‟s appraisal and reactions for the same, depression, anxiety, behavioral problems, irritability, etc. are few of the many problems reported in students with high academic stress. Also from a literature review from KVC Kansas (2020) there are many other reasons why kids might be so stressed. Full schedules and responsibilities, relentless media overload, and less sleep are all examples of our kids‟ stressors. One of the biggest reasons kids are stressed is academic pressure.

Table 3 The Role of Music Preference as a Coping Mechanism Towards to their Academic stress Table 3 shows In what way can music help students to ease school-related stress. Some of the student‟s stated that music helps them to ease their school related stress, in which in some ways it does improve their performance and makes them more concentrated and productive. As the respondent said “In the way of music can help me relieve my stress associated with school. First I can do my tasks well because I listen to music while I work my brain calms more so that I do well and I finish my school works on time. Secondly, I can focus or concentrate on a task or on answering a test so that I can analyze and answer it properly. Lastly, it improves my mood and gives me the feeling that I have peace. Also it relieves the stress or the problem, pain that I feel, the music removes all my stress and problems, struggles that surround me every day.” Indeed that music does really help them in so many
ways. Hence, it even energizes them to do well in school and be more focused and wellconcentrated. This findings is supported by a study from (Oliver,1997; Schreiber, 1988) stating that music exposure enhances cognitive performance and/or academic achievement. Rather music may help students focus on mental tasks such as studying, depending on their learning styles. Also from a study of Mulligan (1999) that music has been used to enhance people‟s emotional well-being. Music can also serve other important roles in people‟s lives, including cognitive, spiritual, physical, behavioral, and social functions.

Some, towards their music preferences, it captures what they feel or depends on what they like to listen to every time. As one of the respondents said “It is just simple. When I am happy, I listen to bops, rocks, reggae, and other upbeat genres. However, when I am sad or stressed, I listen to songs that will make me cry more because I feel like it just eases everything I have inside.” Additionally, according to another respondent, “My music preference is Classical music also Instruments Music that can really change my mood and the beat is sometimes active and like just the sounds of wind or water or sometimes just the sound of instruments like the piano. “Majority of the respondents stated that they have in common in terms of music preferences, but some don‟t like rock music. Respondent said “I'm into heavy metal, punk, alternative, classic rock, hip-hop & rap, pop, rhythm & blues, reggae, and some music that are popular, only SOME, and those songs that excite someone more.” This findings is supported by a study from Constantino Jr (2008) stating that the music's presence and relative influence on them. In which Religious music is the most preferred type of music while rap is least preferred, the community factor has the greatest influence on the choice of music of the students and music greatly affects the personal and academic life of the students. Also from a study of Kevin Droe (2006) stating that music taste determined by what people listen to or by the type of music that they prefer, is like or disliking a musical stimulus all there is to preference.

Students have different kinds of inclination towards their preferred music. As you can see on what the respondent stated, it defines their different way of inclination that comes from different objectives of music they‟re interested in. The way of their inclination to their preferred music is connected to what expectation they‟ll like on the music they‟ll listen to and also their experiences. Like, one of the respondents stated “ I would not say I like opening up to people, so I don't get comforting words a lot, but by my music preferences, I felt like someone comforted me and someone knows my pain and hardships. I sort of feel communication between music and me.” Additionally, from another respondent that stated “I guess, my experiences in life.”. That‟s why the researcher noticed that the inclinations of students towards their preferred music are correlated to the experiences and life. This finding is supported by the literature of Dr. Garces-Bacsal (2011) that stated how music is permeable, allowing one's own life experiences and meaning to seep into one's perception of a song. Also some musically inclined or people who love music has a sense of empowerment in having those playlists reflect what they are feeling or experiencing.

Table 6 The Role of Music Preference to School-Related Stress Table 6 shows students' perception of the role of music preference to school-related stress. Based on the student‟s responses they all have different roles in what their music preference perceives their school-related stress, as one of the respondents said “It makes me ease my mind and continue doing academic works again after listening to some comforting songs. Sometimes, I even do my academic works while listening to music so I won't get stress a lot. It's like music is a friend of mine who helps me overcome my stress in academics.” To put all together, our music preference plays a huge role
even with our school related stress which it removes our stress and calms the mind, according to another respondent “I think the role of my preference for music in my stress related to school is to help me and effective for me to maintain my productivity in my activities and be active in school and avoid late passes of my activities.” The finding is supported by a study from Peter Rentfrow (2012) stating that music is a crucial element of everyday life. People spend hours listening to it and billions of dollars buying it. Also from another study from Vella E., Mills G. (2017) stated that the focus of the researchers was to see if music would help to establish a relation between personality and music preference. Table 7 Role of Music Preference as a Coping Mechanism Towards to their Academic stress Table 7 shows Do you agree that listening to your preferred music can help you relieve your stress Based on the student‟s responses it showcases that listening to preferred music can really relieve stress and other mind related issues. Like one of the respondent said that “Yes, because listening to my favorite preferred music I know it can help me a lot and also I can release all my stress in terms of my academic and I know with my favorite preferred music my performance improves a lot because I relieve my stress so that my brain is clearly and then I can also change my mood on a daily basis, especially when I study and when i listen to my favorite preferred music , all my stress in academic it is disappears quickly.” Additionally, another respondent also said that “Yes, because by listening to music, I can go back to my old self again, the bubbly one, after breaking down because of academics”. With that being said, the researcher proved that music as a coping mechanism really can relieve stress of students that are experiencing academic stress and other difficulties. This findings is supported by the study of Segaren (2019) that stated many students agree that listening to music while learning or revising allows them to "concentrate easier." Furthermore, from the literature of Carlos (2016) it indicated that a person who is listening might agree that hearing their favorite music gives them a pleasant feeling. Also It gives a feeling of calm and comfort in particular. As it can easily process its rhythmic flow and hear its lovely melody from there. That relates to why we find it as the reliever of our stress. Furthermore, some research suggests that only certain types of music are beneficial while learning 27
CONCLUSION The results from this research show several findings with regards to the aim of this study which is to know the Role of Student‟s Music Preference as a Coping Mechanism Towards academic stress and research statement of the problem. Based on the analysis indicated, researchers concluded the views of the Role of Student‟s Music Preference as a Coping Mechanism towards academic stress. As seen on the result of research question one, there are three key findings that specify the benefits of listening to favorite music. The responses indicate: relieve stress, understanding a person‟s feelings, and mood booster. On the other hand, in research question two, there are three key findings to the perception of students towards academic stress, and that involves weak internet connection, academic pressure/ expectations like workloads and also the last key terms indicates that academic stress is a form of irritation that can worsen mental stability. Particularly, it showcases the reasons behind them being academically stressed. According to the result for the research question three, the researchers included four key findings: Music soothes the mind, reduces academic stress, sense of productivity, and contribution to concentration. Those are the ways how music helps students to ease school-related stress. On the research question four, it involves different music preferences of students. Like, heavy metal music: punk, reggae, and aggressive sounds, Music mood classification: emotional music and articulated to sentiment, Calm music: chill melodies, and classical music, and last but not the least all genres of music: contains popular music. As seen in the result in research question five, the researchers found five results that indicate five key findings to the different ways that resulted in students to have an inclination towards their preferred music. These are the following: experiences in life, experimentation in music, relation to ambition, communication within music, and gives peace of mind. For the result of the research question six, the researcher involved key findings: alleviate stress, rehabilitate the mind, sense of comfort, energizer and contribute to productivity. That pertains to students' perception of the role of music preference to school-related stress. As the research question four, five, and six are connected to each other. It shows the result of the role of music preferences towards a student‟s academic stress. From the last research question anchored to the statement of the problem number, there are 5 results gathered that indicate 5 key findings: clear the mind, decrease stress, help to get back on track, release stress cells, and lastly reduce tension. These are the perceptions of students towards how listening to their preferred music helps them relieve their stress.

RECOMMENDATION In the light of the results of this study, there are several recommendations that researchers have drawn. Researchers recommend teachers to use the Role of Music Preferences of the students as their Coping mechanism towards their academic stress, because listening to their preferred music helps them focus which would improve their performance in school as well the stress levels they feel. Another, teachers should be the one who will encourage their students to listen to their favourite music hence, it involves using mobile gadgets if they will allow, so that the students will feel determined and energized while doing school activities. Teachers should conduct an orientation or webinars wherein teachers will be able to elaborate on the role of music preference and the benefits of it as a coping mechanism towards their academic stress. Researchers highly recommend students to be engaged in the role of music preference as a coping mechanism towards their academic stress because it will help them to enhance their performance in school and even makes them more concentrated to do your school work, also it eases the stressful moments you feel through academics. Additionally researchers recommend Guidance Counsellors to help the student‟s to address the issues regarding the student‟s problem concerning their academics, counsellors should also conduct students experiencing stress in terms of academics and self-assessment that correlates to student's academic stress in school. With that guidance counsellors may also have collaboration with parents and school staff in conducting counselling like Parent Teacher Conference (PTC), parent–teacher association/organization (PTA/PTO), and parent–teacher–student association (PTSA). Researchers also recommend this especially for the parent‟s, supporting their children and making sure of their dispositions they feel or encounter in terms of their Academic stresses and helping them to make the job easier and less stressful for their children. Lastly the researchers would like to recommend this for the Future researchers, if they will use or create another version of our study, they should shed more light about the Role of the Students Music Preference as a Coping Mechanism towards to their Academic Stress so it will have more new findings and knowledge that can contribute to the continued existence. Formulating the same research but in a different location, so that many schools will be aware of this. Creating the same research study would have sustained more of new and great findings.

Pressured under expectations
Academic stress is a kind of stress that makes you change yourself somehow. To the point that you get irritated easily, distance yourself from everyone you know, and sometimes, it could get worse and put you in a state of mental instability.
Mood swings
It’s when you’re given 4-6 activities in your Google classroom and the deadline is within the day or a short period of time, like tomorrow, and then there will be more activities coming for you like a horde of zombies. Another is when you have a weak internet connection and it’s the reason you can’t take notes in your google meet which makes your possibility of failing higher.

My anxiety usually triggers when I haven't started my activities and its deadlines are about to come. As I've mentioned earlier, music helps me calm down whenever my anxiety tends to attack. There are different types of music, a sad one, rock, bop, reggae, and many more, and it all can ease everyone's stress depending on their preferences. But for me, sad music is what I want to hear when I am stress, not just in academics but in all. It's just like a math problem; when you multiply a negative one on the negative one, it will become positive. I love hearing sad music because it feels like someone is comforting me.
