Sharing Back Our History
Helen Morgan and I only began collecting in March; but with everyone’s help, we’ve already built up a collection of over 3,500 photographs and documents! At the end of summer, I felt confident enough to start sharing back our history. I’ve given presentations to the Friday Hub, Probus Club, children at Etchells Primary, hosted walks around north and south Heald Green and given talks above Café Unity, to history groups, Smithy Croft residents and even a presentation over Zoom – raising money for St. Ann’s Hospice in the process. This winter, I’m prioritising scanning and publishing the growing backlog of articles and documents – if anyone can help speed this up, please get in touch! Keep checking on Facebook and the website for new content as it comes online – we’ve gone from 150 to over 1,600 members within the space of 7 months! Please Help Us - Get Involved Why not take a look at our website: www.healdgreenheritage.org, where you can access photos, documents and articles about Heald Green’s history. Ring Colin Barnsley on 0754 549 9632 if you have more memories or photos to share with us. Adverts: For the first time in many years we are carrying adverts in this issue as many people enjoyed seeing old adverts on the HG Heritage website. If you would like to advertise next time, let the Ratepayers' Secretary know.
Cafe Unity
Heald Green's community Cafe Unity on Finney Lane re-opened after the Covid restrictions, much to the delight of the regular customers who have sorely missed the company and conversations which always start up there. If you haven't been to Cafe Unity, give it a try. The atmosphere is relaxed and no one will hurry you to leave. It's a social community centre with an upstairs room to hire, not a profit making enterprise. Many friends of the Cafe want to support this special place and regularly donate by standing order. This is a great help to keep the Cafe as a safe and welcoming place in Heald Green. If you'd like to donate regularly, £5 per month, or less, would make a big difference. These are the Cafe Unity bank details if you want to set up a standing order: Cafe Unity2014 Account no. 19986760 sort code 30 13 90 or you can call in the Cafe for a form. Don't forget to gift aid it, if applicable. 2
Stockport Local Plan
You will remember that because Stockport Council has come out of GMSF they must now prepare a Local Plan, which will contain all the Stockport planning policies and the proposed use of all land within Stockport. The Planning Department are working on producing a draft plan which we will be invited to comment on. Publication of these draft proposals has been drastically delayed and the first draft will not be published for consultation until the middle of 2022. When it does come out, we must be ready to examine it and submit our comments. We may have as little as eight weeks to do this. We have set up a Local Plan Group to research the plan when it comes out but we are keen to have anyone else join us. You may be an expert in one of the aspects of the plan, but we are also keen to welcome non-experts who wish to get involved. If you wish to get involved please write to: [email protected].
Boundaries Commission
In the last issue of CONTACT we mentioned that the Boundaries Commission for England was examining Stockport to decide where the boundaries of the wards should be; in other words where should Heald Green begin and end. We asked you to write in with your views and to emphasise that we are one strong community and wished to keep our present boundaries. Your Ratepayers' Association sent a firm response along these lines. We are pleased to say that the Commission has now published its draft proposals which are exactly as we wanted. So, thank you to all of those who wrote in. There was a proposal from one of the political parties that would have added into Heald Green everything along Styal Rd, up to Church Rd in Gatley and taken out of Heald Green everything on the East side of Wilmslow Rd. (Bradshaw Hall Lane and Dawson areas). The Commission's proposals are now out for consultation. We would ask you to join us in writing to them to welcome their proposals, so that the political party proposals don't get resubmitted and accepted. East Avenue Park Council officers, TLC Park staff, G M Police and Friends of East Avenue Park Group Volunteers and members of the public met on 2nd November to clear the park and get it winter ready. The main focus was to bring down the bushes to eye line and strip them back in a bid to try and curb any further Anti Social Behaviour. The park has held several family events including a Story Book Hunt for world Book day, a bear hunt and not forgetting the Fab day that was Picnic in the Park. Find us on Facebook @FriendsofEastAvePark
Litter Pick A huge thank you to the 30+ volunteers who participated in September's community litter pick, on World Clean up Day. The volunteers managed to fill more than 25 bags of litter, within a couple of hours of walking along the main litter hotspots. Thank you to the Co-op for supporting the community litter pick by providing equipment and also participating as volunteers. We also appreciate the support and assistance provided by Daryll Falconer from Stockport Council. The volunteers were able to enjoy a free drink and cake at Cafe Unity, courtesy of the Heald Green Ratepayers' Association. We'll provide details of the next community litter pick nearer the time in March 2022, on our Facebook page and in the next issue of the CONTACT magazine. See www.worldcleanupday.org

Bloor Homes Development
Work has now started on the first phase of 325 homes off Wilmslow Rd opposite Queensway. This first phase includes 202 homes. Preliminary works are currently being undertaken to prepare the site for the first phase of construction. Bloor Homes plan to start constructing plot foundations in January 2022, followed by initial road construction in February. Later in the summer their onsite sales centre will open with the first new residents expected to move in from August 2022. With several separate construction projects taking place in close proximity to each other, a Community Liaison Group has been established which meets bimonthly and is attended by the local councillors, Ratepayers’ Association, the Seashell Trust, Bloor Homes and Cheadle Muslim Association. This forum has been established to ensure clear communication between the different parties over the coming years. If you have any queries about any of the current construction projects, please contact one of the councillors, updates will also be posted on the councillor’s Facebook page. https://facebook.com/HealdGreenCouncillors
Heald Green Community Festival
We couldn't have the Community Festival for the last two years because of Covid restrictions but who wants a Festival in the future?? Could you help to get things moving? Some of the Festival Committee have decided that it's time to retire now. Special mention must be paid to Rev. Charles Nevin who has decided to step down after many years chairing the committee. A new committee needs to be formed together with help from the experienced people who have been involved for years. If you'd like another Festival, you could be part of a new exciting group. Maybe you can do it with some friends. There are some bright, energetic and pro-active people living in Heald Green so hopefully the Festival can carry on with their enthusiasm and energy. Please get in touch with Chris Jones on 07757710199 if you're interested. If nobody is interested, there can't be a Festival. Please help!

Heald Green Gateway Street Lighting Designs
You may have noticed whilst travelling around Stockport, some of the attractive designs welcoming everyone to a particular area of the borough. Your councillors have been pushing hard for some time for Heald Green to have this feature and it has been agreed that we should have our own Gateway Street Lighting Design.
Following an initial consultation in Summer 2020, we now have 4 final design options to choose from. Please choose your favourite design from the following options, these will be collated and fed back to the council early in the New Year. Option 1 - War Memorial/Tree/Poppy symbol Option 2 - Airplane/Trees Option 3 - Fingerpost/Trees/Plane Option 4 - Airplane/Trees/Train Station
To vote for your favourite design, please vote online at: https://tinyurl.com/u9vryyrs If you do not have internet access, please contact any of the councillors or committee members who will be able to record your vote on your behalf. If you have any further comments, please contact one of the councillors.

Carols Round the Tree and Crib
The Ratepayers' Councillors and Committee wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and New Year. This year you can meet friends and neighbours when you gather round the Tree and Crib at 7pm on Christmas Eve to sing traditional carols, as we've always done before last years' restrictions. Masks and some social distancing might be advisable this year. It's Heald Green's traditional way to start Christmas. Please bring a torch and we'll give you the carol sheets. Hazel Grove Brass Band have kindly agreed again to help us to celebrate and sing. Just under half an hour singing with a few words from the Churches will set the scene for Christmas in Heald Green. Come along with your family and neighbours.

Remembrance Service 2021
It was good to be able to gather together at the War Memorial this year after the Covid restrictions of 2020 when all had to lay wreaths and pay respects individually. Coming together in an Act of Remembrance is so much more meaningful and poignant, especially for the young people from schools and uniformed organisations who always join with the older residents at the War Memorial Ratepayers' Committee member, on Remembrance Sunday. Another poppy was Catherine Stuart, selling Poppies sewn onto the Cascade of Poppies displayed at John Lewis. on the oak tree, each representing a year since the 1918 Armistice, 103 this year. Large poppies had again been bought by Ratepayers and erected by volunteers on more lamp posts than ever along main roads in Heald Green. More and more people are displaying their own large poppies by their houses this year too. Cllr Carole McCann also organised the sale of poppies with local volunteers raising thousands of pounds for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Many thanks to all who made the Act of Remembrance meaningful in Heald Green.
Lance Corporal David Stitt
On 17th October, a special Remembrance and Dedication Service was arranged at St Catherine's by the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment to remember David Stitt from Brandon Ave, Heald Green, who was killed, aged 27, in Ballykelly, Northern Ireland in 1982. A special plaque has been installed by the Regiment on St Catherine's notice board.

A word from Mayor Cllr Nottingham.
I have now passed the halfway point in my term as the Mayor of Stockport; isn’t it incredible how time flies! Often accompanied by Diane, the Mayoress, we have been out and about across the length and breadth of Stockport connecting with its resilient and innovative citizens. We have been meeting Community groups, opening new businesses, launching exhibitions and events, attending award ceremonies, supporting fundraisers, celebrating anniversaries and centenaries, and marking special days. It has been inspiring, humbling, an honour and an absolute delight to meet with so many special people. There have been too many highlights to mention here but the scrapbook of memories is already getting quite full! At the end of a busy day, it is always great to return to our own home and community here in Heald Green. As the day light shortens and the festive lights begin to come on, we are looking forward to celebrating Christmas with our friends and family. And so, we wish you a happy Christmas and a fruitful and safe New Year.
Subscriptions
In the Summer edition of Contact, we told you some of the things we do to make Heald Green a better place. There's a cost associated with this, so we ask for a subscription of £5 for two years. That's the same as the price of a coffee every twelve months. Traditionally, we have asked for subscriptions by cash or cheque. Electronic payment is fast becoming the norm. If this suits you better, please send us a private message via Facebook or an email to: [email protected] So if you like what we do, please spare us the price of a coffee.
