How to Use the St. John Car Barge You can commute like an islander between St. Thomas and St. John, either by passenger ferry or by car barge! There are three vehicle barge companies that take vehicles and their passengers to and from St. Thomas and St. John. If you are staying on St. Thomas, do take the time to spend a day driving around St. John. These convenient and easy car barges will get you there so you can explore St. John on your own and visit shops in Cruz Bay and swim and snorkel at the beautiful National Park Beaches. Likewise if you are staying on St. John, St. Thomas offers an opportunity for great duty- free shopping, many lovely beaches and much more! St. Thomas offers great shopping, and taking your car over for the day saves you from having to take taxis to get around St. Thomas. TO BARGE TO ST. JOHN: Drive to the Red Hook ferry dock on St. Thomas’s East End. You will first pay a $3 port fee ($4 for SUVs and larger vehicles), which is collected before you enter the barge loading apron. St. Thomas and St. John barges have personnel on the aprons to help direct vehicle drivers onto the barge safely and in the proper order. When the barge attendant motions your turn, you’ll turn your vehicle around so you can back it right onto the barge via a wide ramp. You’ll roll down your window, turn off your music and unbuckle your seat belt; the attendant will guide you into the lane where he wants you to park. Put your parking brake on once you’re parked! Then you’re free to get out of your vehicle and ride on the observation deck while you cross the 6 miles between islands (the trip takes about 30-40 minutes). Keep your eyes open as you travel across - small flying fish, boat traffic, or during the winter months, even whales have all been seen from the barges. If you choose to stay inside your car, please be courteous to other passengers and keep your music volume down low. And upon arrival to the island, please wait your turn to drive right off the barge. On the next page are the car barge companies and rates for cars and light trucks.

SOME IMPORTANT NOTES TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN IN RED HOOK

When taking the passenger ferry to St. John, park ONLY in legal spots in Red Hook, or your car could be booted (very expensive)! Parking is very difficult in Red Hook, so it's best to get there early. Pay to park right at the Ferry Terminal, or, when coming into Red Hook, turn RIGHT at Marina Market and drive up the hill to MENCIA’S PARKING LOT, where parking is $10 a day. They will watch your vehicle, and have a taxi van or jitney shuttle running to and from the ferry dock to take you and bring you back up to your car. This service is well worth the $10. Passenger ferries run every hour, on the hour, leaving St. Thomas starting at 6 am; the last ferry back to St. Thomas is at 11 pm. Be sure to take your photo IDs with you when using the ferry – ferry personnel may ask you for them. If you want to take your rental vehicle on the car barge over to St. John (only HERTZ does not permit you to take their cars to St. John), you can enter the Ferry Terminal in Red Hook at the sign for Car Barge, pay an entry fee of $3, then back your car up onto the ferry as instructed by the barge employees. Barges generally run every half hour. Because of the barges’ steep loading ramps, you cannot drive a small, low vehicle on and off the barge without scraping a small car’s underside – rent a Jeep or other large vehicle if you want to utilize the car barge for day trips to St. John. The last car barges return to St. Thomas at 6, 6:15 and 7 pm, and these late barges can be very crowded – so plan your timing so you don’t get stuck on St. John for the night!
