Ascension: The New Normal?
In the liturgical calendar, we Catholics for this Sunday commemorate Christ’s ascension into heaven but the narrative about the event is not read in the Gospel reading but rather in the first reading which is taken from the first chapter of Acts of the Apostles (Acts 1:1-11). The Gospel reading on this Ascension Sunday is the ending story of the gospel of Matthew ( 28:16-20). In the Biblical jargon, this passage is called “The Great Commissioning”. This is the last time that Jesus made a discourse with His disciples and told them three things, namely: 1) He made clear and assured them that His power on earth and in heaven is eternal (cf Mt 28:18); 2) He commissioned his disciples saying, “go and
make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you (Mt 28:19-20)”.
Some scholars speculate that it is in this scriptural event that the Sacrament of Baptism was instituted by Christ, and; 3) He promised that He will always be with them until the end of time (cf Mt 28:20). These last words of Jesus should really still resound for all Christians today.
On this feast of Ascension, the Church also celebrates “Catholic Communication’s Sunday” which clings on to Jesus’ command: “. . . teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Mt 28:20). With these words of Jesus, the Church carries on Jesus’ mandate to preach the Gospel to all peoples . . . to communicate to everyone that “the blind regain their sight,
the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear,
the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.” (Mt 11:5). In other
words to communicate to the whole world that Salvation is at hand—that there is Good News! But how can all these be relevant these days when we are shattered by the threats of COVID19?
At the last line of the Sunday Gospel, Jesus proclaimed: “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Mt 28:20). These words of Jesus seemed to be a bluff since Jesus here was assuring his disciples that he’ll continue to abide with them but in fact he is leaving— ascending into heaven to unite with the Father. Frank Sinatra’s song, “Fly me to the moon . . .” is only romantic and is definitely incongruent to Jesus’ Ascension into heaven. The truths about the mystery of the Ascension of Jesus according to the teachings in the
Zarephath (see 1 Kings 17:17-22). Jesus has risen from the dead but ascended into heaven in union with the Father and the Holy Spirit in order to live forever and not to die again. Jesus’ Ascension gives true meaning to His being the “Immanuel—God with us” and continues to be with us in and through the Holy Spirit.
The Ascension of Jesus gives us the assurance that we too can hope for Eternal life with God. It is in Jesus’ ascension when he promised that we shall receive the power of the Holy Spirit (cf Acts 1:8). Without Jesus ascending into heaven, his paschal mystery will be meaningless; much so his rising from death—his resurrection will be naught.
ascended Christ as Head of the Church given us, members of his Body, the hope of one day entering into glory with him (cf CCC 661-67).
Today, people wait to return back to normal though that returning back will never be the same, it will in fact be a “New Normal” and for us Christians that new normal should be a new way of life which should be a higher level of Christianity inspired by the Holy Spirit. We hear stories like: “It has been long since I prayed the rosary and now I’m glad that I pray it with my children. Because of this Pandemic, many people learned to do what should have been done all the while, like: many learned to be generous; to be thrifty; to be neat and hygienic and health conscious; to be self-sufficient, and above all to be aware that God is always present. These seemingly newness of what were supposed to be normal for Christians give essence to the feast of the ascension.
If Jesus did not ascend into heaven, his resurrection will have no difference from Lazarus’ who rose from the dead in order to die again or Elijah’s bringing back to life of the son of the widow of
Jesus who always possess heavenly powers with God the Father and the Holy Spirit return back by ascending up to heaven. By Ramgie Almoneda

are: 1) The Ascension marks Jesus’ exaltation into the heavenly realm of his Father. 2) The Ascension does not separate Christ from us because as he promised, from heaven he “draws everyone to himself” (Jn 12:32). 3) Since “he lives forever to make intercession”, Christ continues to exercise his priesthood since he entered “heaven itself, that he might now appear before God on our behalf ” Heb 7:25; 9:24). 4) The

Irradiation of Joy in Faith
“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11) Joy is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit— attained only with God. It is more than just momentary happiness; it is more profound and inspired. It is something that people would want to share with the world and, also, many long to find. So, how do people communicate joy in our faith to their peers? Here are some of the responses from the 12 people I surveyed: “By actively participating in our parish programs and activities, attending mass, posting/sharing through social media, and being good to others” – Nanette Vidola “I encourage my friends to join me in attending Masses, processions, and other religious activities.” – Eugene de los Santos “By forwarding messages of thankfulness using my social media accounts” – Atty. Malu Pacao “I have meaningful conversations with my peers that tackle our similarities and differences regarding our beliefs. The differences don’t matter because what’s important is that we can communicate with each other with an open mind and create connections.” – Clarisse Herico “I often share with my friends about this different kind of happiness and inner peace that I feel whenever I practice my faith.” – SG Nicolas One of the best means to show others our spiritual joy is through incorporating Catholic values and practices into our lives. The only way to fully experience our faith, after all, is to live out what it teaches us. Another way to relate our joy to our peers is to have heartfelt discussions about our faith. Exchanging our momentous experiences regarding our spiritual lives lets us bask in the sense of community with one another. We can also make use of the convenience provided by social media to cast our nets further and inspire more of the world. There is indeed a plentitude of ways to express joy in our faith; to sum them up: one has to be a mirror of God’s love. Like how the moon is dependent on the sun’s light to be illuminated, we can only radiate inner joy and be reflections of goodness when we are with Him. As they say, “joy is the pure echo of God’s presence,” and continually seeking and recognizing Him in everything—and everyone—shows that He truly is the ultimate source of our happiness. Authenticity in Education amid the COVID-19 Pandemic TOMORROW WILL BE MY daughter’s eighth birthday and this will be the first time she will blow candles on her birthday cake without me beside her. On phone calls, she would ask, when would I be there? I always answered, “soon”, with an assuring smile. Undoubtedly, these challenges will be a first of many firsts. As we battle the COVID-19 pandemic, the nation, along with the global community, will be facing great amounts of hardship for the next few years. For an unforeseeable future, gaps will be more distant, and our established connections with people will be weaker. I am held almost 400 Kilometers away from Naga City. No oceans to cross, no mountains to climb to get there, and visiting my daughter only takes 8 to 10 hours via land travel. At the moment, to reach Naga City means crossing three province border checkpoints, encountering hundreds of uniformed personnel. If flagged, I would have to explain why I needed to go home. Clearly, a simple cake-blowing ritual won’t suffice as a valid excuse against protocols. If my daughter asks again, I will still answer, “soon”, this time with a low-spirited undertone. I teach art subjects to senior high school learners at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. As an educator, I meet an average of 300 students per semester. When challenged, I could shout out almost nine out of ten of their names correctly. I get to face my students four times a week and occasionally, I get to see some birthday candles blown during lunch breaks and dismissals. We could say as teachers, we abide to the motto, “Loco Parentis”, or “in the place of the parent”. We have always utilized online learning as a tool for instruction and assessment even before the pandemic struck. Definitely, this method is the future of learning, as education development experts would confirm in studies. However, the teacher’s assuring calm voice when resolving mistakes, the consistent stutters during a lecture day, and an approving head bob for a right answer will preserve the heritage of teaching as authentic, and somewhat more sincere. We are just unfortunate that an unwelcomed situation in the guise of a deadly virus keeps us from partaking these modes of teacher-apostle connections and experiences. For now, we should try to make the most of the efforts institutions try to offer with the best intentions in sight. As Christians with limitless learning potential, we will never be satisfied with current situations. This may also be the reason why we continuously search for the truth and wouldn’t settle for less, especially when it comes to our children’s future and their education. We are in a relentless crusade to fill the gaps we neglect every day during this pandemic. My students ask me countless of times since the beginning of the lockdown; “Will we ever step in our school again?”, and “Will we ever get back to normal?”, I always answered with, “soon”, this time with a comforting sigh. Learning never stops. Universities and schools are merely meaningless built structures if teachers and learners would not rekindle that candle-lit spark of authenticity in education in these ever-changing times. I might not be there when my daughter blows her birthday candles this year, but connections will always be lit, and will always be authentic, whether face-to-face or online. By Jonathan Gamalinda

“Ako an poon, kamo an mga sanga… kun suhay kamo sako, mayo kamong magiginibo… Kun magdanay kamo sako, asin magdanay saindo an mga tataramon ko, makakamtan nindo an anoman na hagadon nindo.” (Juan 15:5-7). (Roma 15:13). IV – AGYAT SA PAGTUBOD An Simbahan iyo an katiriponan kan mga tawo, komunidad na inapod asin nagtutubod ki Cristo. 1.
Kumusta an sakong pakikipagrelasyon Saiya, nagkakaigwa kaya ako nin paglaom? Ni Sr. Arlene Lorente
Ano an masasabi mo sa bagong sistema nin pagtukdo sa eskwela? Ang masasabi ko is okay man sya para sako. Filipinos are being practical and creative. And besides sayang man kaya kang one year kung dae papadagos ang pag iskwela diba. So i’m okay with it. (Steny Buen)
(Sofia Alamo)
(Yumi Aiko) First of all I think that the “new system” is unfair. The goal of DepEd is to educate everyone lalo na yung mga mahihirap. But kung titingnan natin sa “bagong sistema” na yan mas makikita natin mag-struggle yung mga lower class or “mahihirap” I know na dapat i utilize din natin yung technology na meron tayo but, still dapat may considerations ang DepEd dun sa mga less fortunate. Hindi lahat afford ang wifi and cellphones. After all ang goal nila is to educate “everyone.” Education is a right, not a privilege. Pero kung titingnan mo yung education system na bago can only be available to those people who can access it. (Alexander Rey Paule) Tinipon ni Sophia Dipon
News Update
2020 Santakrusan on Wheels
To comply with the government’s General Community Quarantine (GCQ) protocol, the Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of St. Jude Thaddeus of Naga City, opted to conduct the Santacruzan on Wheels on May 21-30 to cover the different areas in the parish.
Historically, Santacruzan or “Holy Cross” is the religious parade and ritual pageant to honor the finding of the True Cross by “Reyna Elena” or Queen Helena of Constantinople and her son Constantine the Great. In the whole Philippines, Santacruzan, sometimes known as “Aurora” in our locality, is a popular devotion to honor not only the wooden Cross but Jesus Christ Himself. In practice, parishioners conduct processions with the Holy Cross around the community for 9 consecutive days along with prayers and singing of the “Gozos”. With the GCQ restrictions against mass gathering and physical contact, the Parish decided to have the Santacruzan on Wheels. This entails the following: 1. The Parish Priest and the 2 Parochial Vicars will go around the different pastoral areas carrying the Holy Cross while riding in a
pick-up truck. They will stop in every altar/“alabacion” to pray , sing the “gozos” and bless the altar and family. 2. Preparation and Participation of Pastoral Area Coordinators (PACs),Families and Parishioners a. The PACs will choose the families who will prepare the altar infront of their houses. In general, in every procession, there will be 7 altars in the respective Pastoral Areas. b. The chosen family will prepare an altar: must put a Cross and two candles over a white cloth cover. c. For areas with existing choir and would want to gather in their chapel, they may sing at least 3 stanzas of the “Gozos”. d. Use the Prayer Guides and copies of Songs to be provided. e. Ensure that physical distancing is maintained as required by GCQ protocol of the government.
Santacruzan on Wheels will start every 5 o’clock in the afternoon in the respective pastoral areas as scheduled.

Santa Elena, Santa Krus asin Santakrusan (Ika-Duwang Parte)
Sarong makasusupog na paagi nin kagadanan an Krus mala ngani to an pamosong si Ciserone, habong ngaranan an instrumento nin kagadanan na ini. Duwang pangyayari an nagin kawsa kaini. Pinagiwalan ninda an solong pagsakop kan bilog na imperio Romano. Duwang magkaibang bersyon an burabod kan pangyayaring ini.
Bakong gayong malinaw kun anong simbolo an sinasabi digdi. Pwedeng ini iyo an Cristogram na kinokompone kan duwang Griyegong alfabeto (Chi Rho) o an Santa Krus. Alagad kadakul na bersyon an madudukhayan asin maniriba-ibang an istorya an nahimo magpuon sa ika-apat na siglo sagkod medioevo. Francis Tordilla
