Simple Tenses

Teaching

A tense is a verb form that shows the time of an action or condition. Verbs have three simple tenses: the present, the past, and the future. The present tense shows an action or condition that occurs now. The past tense shows an action or condition that was completed in the past. The future tense shows an action or condition that will occur in the future. Present Past Future

Lydia dusts cabinets. She is helpful. Lydia dusted cabinets. She was helpful. Lydia will dust cabinets. She will be helpful.

The progressive form of a verb shows an action or condition that is in progress. Present Progressive Lydia is dusting cabinets. She is being helpful. Past Progressive Lydia was dusting cabinets. She was being helpful. Future Progressive Lydia will be dusting cabinets. She will be being helpful.

Simple Tenses

Application

A. Correcting Simple Tenses of Verbs Although the times referred to in this paragraph vary from the past to the future, all of its verbs are in the present tense. Rewrite the paragraph, correcting verb tenses as needed. Use progressive tenses if the action is, was, or will be in progress. Underline every verb. Next summer we paint the house. We use at least 20 gallons of blue and five gallons of white paint. We should make sure the brushes and buckets that we use to paint the garage last year are available. Maybe we need a few more brushes. At the end of last summer, we borrow each other’s brushes. Also, next summer, we need more scrapers. Last summer, we lend two to Mr. Vincent, and he never return them. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________

Make sure all verb forms are used correctly. (train, future progressive) I ___________________ (work, past progressive) I ___________________
