The Magic Finger Roald dahl Illustrations by Quentin Blake
Description of the cover page: In the cover page I can see the title of the book and the names of the author and the illustrator of the book. I can see (in the foreground) a girl. The girl is blond and has a red shirt and I think a magic finger. In the middle ground, I can see a totally red background.
Anticipation on the story: I think the girl is going to do magic with her finger but I don’t know what kind of magic she’s going to do.
Summary: The story talks about a little girl with a magic finger. One day she sees her neighbours (the Gregg family) with a lot of hunted ducks. So she gets cross and when she gets cross her finger casts a spell which can transforms people into animals, like the day when she transformed her teacher in a cat. So the night, after trying to hunt four ducks with no success, the Gregg family goes to bed. The next day when they wake up they realize that they have wings, so they go out to fly. But then four ducks with human arms take their house. The days passes and the Gregg family builds a nest and they eat some fruit of from their garden. But the day after, the four ducks try to hunt the Gregg family, so Mr Gregg says that he is never going to kill a bird any more. Finally, the
Gregg family is transformed into humans and they destroy all their guns, change their last name to Egg…And they never kill ducks any more.
Lexical field of birds: Feather:
Nest:
Wings: part which make the birds fly
Sparrow:
And: pigeons, robins, larks, dove…
Egg: where the birds born
Duck: type of bird.
Portrait of the narrator: She is eight years old, she is blond and we don’t know her name. She has a magic finger which can transform people in animals. I think she loves animals because in all the book the girl only transforms people in animals and she transforms the Gregg family because she doesn’t like to see the Gregg family with all the dead ducks. She can’t control her finger because I don’t think she transforms her friends in human-ducks on purpose.
My favourite passage: “Just look at that beastly duck cooking at my stove! Cried Mrs Gregg as she flew past the kitchen window. How dare she! And look at that one holding my lovely gun! Shouted Mr Gregg. One of them is lying my bed! yelled William looking into a top window. And one of them is playing with my electric train! Cried Philip.” pages 30-31, The magic finger, Roald Dahl I like this passage because for me it is funny to see how the duck family does the things that normally the Gregg family does.
Roald Dahl says: “You can write anything for children as long as you got humour.” The story illustrates this part of Roald Dahl says because the story has a lot of humour like when she transforms the teacher in a cat, when she transforms the Gregg family in ducks, or when the Gregg family changes his name from Gregg to Egg… And it is this humour that makes the story more for kids but I think that the story can de also read by adults.
“I think probably kindness is my number one attribute in a human being. I’ll put it before any of the things like courage or bravery or generosity or anything else. If you are kind that’s it.” I think the book illustrates this part because for example the little girl could transform the Gregg’s in something worset than ducks or the ducks can directly kill the Gregg family...
