ROSS MEMORIAL PARK

The most recent addition to the athletic facilities at Washington & Jefferson College are Ross Memorial Park and Alexandre Stadium. Alexandre Stadium hosts the college’s men’s and women’s soccer teams in the fall and the men’s and women's lacrosse squads in the spring season, while Ross Memorial Park serves as home to the W&J baseball team. The playing surface is entirely made of FieldTurf, a synthetic playing surface that W&J has used at Cameron Stadium since its renovation in 2001. A FieldTurf representative indicates that Ross Memorial Park and Alexandre Stadium combined represent the largest continuous artificial playing surface in the world. The 233,000-square foot playing surface accommodates two full soccer/lacrosse fields. When not in use for soccer or lacrosse, this facility can be converted for use by W&J baseball. The baseball outfield overlaps one of the two soccer fields. By erecting a removable fence and revealing the base areas, the facility can be converted for use by baseball for games and practices. Four hundred chairback seats surround Ross Memorial Park in addition to a press box, state-of-the-art scoreboard, and public restrooms. Also, behind the backstop of the baseball field is a two-level structure that houses public restrooms on the bottom level while the upper level will boast a training room, press box area, and a president’s box. ROSS LOCKER ROOMS

The newest addition to the athletic complex on site at Ross Memorial Park and Alexandre Stadium is the Ross Locker Room facility. The locker rooms serve as the official home for baseball, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's lacrosse. The locker room facility is officially dedicated in honor of James David Ross, a loving husband, father and coach, thanks to a generous gift from the Ross family. James David Ross served as manager of the Lower Burrell American Legion for 22 years. Ross amassed over 600 victories in his career and led the Lower Burrell program to 17 league championships and eight Westmoreland County titles. His teams averaged over 27 wins per season. The Ross Locker Room facility houses three full-size locker rooms, an athletic training room and an equipment/laundry room. An officials' locker room and a storage area are also located within the fully air-conditioned, state-of-the-art facility.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team has its sights set on its third NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in the last four years entering the 2012 season. The Presidents finished the 2011 regular season tied for first place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference standings, but missed out on a third-straight NCAA Tournament bid after falling twice on the opening day of the PAC Conference Tournament. Head Coach Jeff Mountain, who has led his teams to six postseason berths in nine seasons at W&J, must replace a number of key positions following the graduation of four all-conference players, including hard-hitting shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz, who ranks among the top offensive players in school history. The team will also have compensate offensively for the graduated Andy Trettel, who hit a team-high .347 in 39 games. In addition, the Presidents lost a pair of all-conference starting pitchers from the top of their rotation in Jordan Zivoder, who threw five complete games last spring, and Pat Kennedy. While there has been plenty of turnover from last season’s squad, W&J brings back a talented sophomore class along with a strong nucleus of juniors and seniors. The Presidents’ current sophomore class accounted for nearly 40 percent of the team’s innings pitched (124.0-319.1) and at-bats (484-1,215) last season. Coach Mountain has also recruited a group of 13 newcomers, providing the squad with even more depth. Senior right-handed pitcher Dave Trushel (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) owns a 16-9 career record with a 4.41 ERA in 40 appearances (26 starts). He has logged 181 2/3 innings and has struck out 99 batters, while throwing a trio of complete games and earning two saves. Trushel, a 2011 Division III Mideast Region Gold Glover, threw a school-record 12 innings against Saint Vincent last April 14th. Joining Trushel at the top of the pitching rotation is sophomore right-hander Eddie Nogay (Weirton, W. Va./Madonna). Nogay earned Honorable Mention All-PAC accolades after posting a 3-0 record and 2.83 ERA in 13 appearances during his rookie season. Sophomore pitchers Brian O’Neill (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) and Randy Risch (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) will both try to build upon solid rookie campaigns. Risch allowed just nine earned runs in 25.2 innings (3.16 ERA), while O’Neill appeared in 10 games, including a pair of starts. Sophomores Chris Kosty (Woxford, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Marc Rizzo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and Mike Vizzini (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) along with junior Corey Young (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) will also see time on the mound in 2012. Talented freshmen Tyler Dean (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) and Jared Baird (East Freedom, Pa./Central) should challenge for innings as well. The coaching staff is also hoping that junior lefty and former Duquesne transfer Christian Wheeler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) can return to form following rehab from an injury. The catcher position is one of the deepest positions on the team. Receiving the pitchers will be most likely sophomore Ronny Peirish (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland). Peirish knocked in 13 runs while appearing in 34 games, including 31 starts. He also threw out six potential base stealers. When he is not behind the plate, Peirish will field some innings in the outfield. The trio of junior Zach Podrasky (Houston, Pa./Chartiers Valley), sophomore Tyler Schultz (Strongsville, Ohio, Strongsville) and freshman Mark Wesolek (Bairdford, Pa./Deer Lakes) will also battle for playing time behind the dish as well as at first base. Sophomore right fielder Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) will lead the offense after enjoying a standout season as a freshman. Staniscia earned First Team All-PAC laurels by hitting .347 with one home run and 19 RBI in 147 at bats last year. He was W&J’s team leader in hits (51), doubles (12), triples (3) and total bases (72) and racked up hitting streaks of seven, nine and 14 games. Senior Brian Szabo (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory), junior Scott Brady (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton), sophomore Matt Boronsky (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) and freshman Cory Bauer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) will also receive time in the outfield. Brady paced the Presidents with two home runs and hit .318 a season ago, while Szabo is a career .284 hitter, having appeared in 109 games. Slick-fielding senior Aaron Klinec (North Olmstead, Ohio/ St. Ignatius) will move to shortstop after serving as a mainstay at second base during his first three seasons. Klinec has started 105 games and owns a .963 career fielding percentage. Juniors Michael Beerman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian) and Scott Liller (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) along with sophomore Matt Fry (State College, Pa./State College) will all see playing time at second base. Sophomore Kyle McLain (East Amherst, N.Y./Canisius) will man third base, while sophomore D.J. Michalski (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) is the returner at the opposite corner. Michalski made 13 starts and collected seven base hits a year ago. McLain racked up 10 RBI and a .306 on base percentage in 31 games. Freshman Kyle Smith (Pickerington, Ohio/Central) will share some of the third base duties and has the ability to play second base as well. Senior Ryan Verlihay (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) will serve as a compliment to Michalski at first base and a solid bat off the bench. Newcomer Derek McIlvaine (Washington, Pa./ChartiersHouston) is a candidate to be the Presidents’ designated hitter in his first season with the team after playing at NCAA Division II Ashland University as a freshman. He will compete with the catchers as well as sophomore Gary Revale (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) for the starting spot in the lineup. W&J opens the 2012 campaign with a doubleheader against La Roche on March 12th at Ross Memorial Park. After another home contest against Penn State-Behrend (Mar. 15), the Presidents will spend a week in Auburndale, Florida competing in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. W&J plays seven games against teams from five states, including a contest with 12th-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point on March 23rd.

JEFF MOUNTAIN, HEAD COACH Four-time Presidents' Athletic Conference Baseball Coach of the Year Jeff Mountain returns for his ninth season at Washington & Jefferson College in 2012. Mountain has helped W&J win four Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball titles and the 2009 and 2010 squads earned spots in the NCAA Division III Tournament field. In addition, W&J claimed the 2006 and 2007 ECAC Division III Tournament championships. Mountain, the all-time baseball coaching victories leader at Washington & Jefferson College, is the 36th head coach in program history. He holds a 234-147-1 record (.613), including a 207-104-1 mark (.664) since 2005. W&J has made six total postseason appearances (2 NCAA, 4 ECAC) under his direction. Mountain has put W&J baseball on the national radar. Prior to his arrival, the Presidents had won just 21 games in four years. Since then, W&J has amassed 53 All-PAC players, 13 All-Region selections and its first two All-Americans (2007 graduates Sam Mann and Shaun Pfeil) in recent history. The 2010 Presidents made history by becoming the first PAC team since 1984 to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. W&J competed at the Mideast Regional at Don Schaly Stadium in Marietta, Ohio. W&J also attained the No. 1 ranking in the Mideast Region late in the season. Washington & Jefferson captured the PAC regular-season title and notched its fifth 30-win season in the past six years after finishing with a 32-12 overall record. Jim Pasquine '10 was named the PAC Player of the Year for the second-straight season and was one of four Presidents selected to the Rawlings/ ABCA All-Mideast Region team. In 2009, the Presidents earned the PAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament and won two games at the South Regional in Salisbury, Md., while marking its first-ever appearance in the national tournament. W&J placed fourth at the regional tournament, defeating Washington and Lee (Va.) and York (Pa.). The Presidents set numerous school records during the 2009 campaign, including single-season victories with a 35-14 record. Mountain was named the ECAC Division III South Coach of the Year and Pasquine was chosen as the PAC Player of the Year and was selected First Team Rawlings/ABCA AllMideast Region. In 2008, a young Presidents' squad earned the school's fourth consecutive postseason bid in the ECAC Tournament. W&J advanced to the semifinals after defeating Pitt-Bradford in the first round. Mountain played an important role in the development of Sam Mann '07, who became the first W&J baseball player in modern history to earn a professional baseball contract. Mann started his career with the Kalamazoo Kings of the Frontier League before signing a contract in 2008 with the Washington Wild Things. The 2007 season marked another 30-win season (32-12). W&J was ranked as high as 16th in the nation and No. 2 in the NCAA Division III Mideast Region. Washington & Jefferson claimed the PAC regular-season and tournament titles and advanced to postseason play. Mountain was once again selected as the PAC Coach of the Year. In 2006, Mountain guided the Presidents to a 34-13 overall record and a No. 5 ranking in the NCAA Division III Mideast Region. The 34 victories broke the school record from the 2005 season and the Presidents' ECAC title was the first in school history. Mountain was also honored as the PAC Coach of the Year for the second time and was named the Washington-Greene County Men's Coach of the Year by the Washington Observer-Reporter newspaper. Mountain served as the assistant baseball coach at John Carroll for two seasons prior to his arrival in Washington, Pa., where his primary responsibility was the pitching coach, while assisting with hitting and defense. Mountain was also in charge of developing scouting reports and was the regional recruiting coordinator for Ohio, western Pennsylvania and western New York. In addition to his experience in collegiate coaching, Mountain served one season as a consultant for the Wellsville Nitros of the Northeastern Collegiate Baseball League during the summer of 2000. A 2000 graduate of Allegheny College as a history major, Mountain concluded his playing career as one of the most decorated pitchers in Division III. He was twice named the NCAC Pitcher of the Year and led the Gators to their first-ever NCAA Division III World Series appearance in 2000. Mountain was named an ABCA/Rawlings Second Team All-American and a First Team All-Mideast Region pitcher following his senior season. In the summer of 2010, he was inducted into the Allegheny College Sports Hall of Fame. Mountain, who was named to the North Coast Athletic Conference’s 20th Anniversary Baseball Team, also rewrote the Allegheny record books during his four years and is the school’s all-time win leader with 26 career victories. He also broke the record for innings pitched (239.2) and ranks fourth in Gator history with 185 career strikeouts. Mountain and his wife, Gretchen, reside in Canonsburg, Pa.

MARK THOMCHICK, ASSISTANT COACH Mark Thomchick graduated from Washington & Jefferson in May 2010 and returns to his alma mater as an assistant baseball coach for second season in 2012. Thomchick helped the Presidents win 122 games during his career and make the school's first two appearances as the NCAA Baseball Regional. W&J placed fourth at the 2009 South Regional in Salisbury, Md. Thomchick, a left-handed hitting catcher, ranks among the all-time leaders at W&J in numerous career statistical categories, including home runs (21, 2nd), walks (51, 6th) and runs batted in (91, 7th). During his final two years, the Indiana, Pa., native smacked 18 homers and knocked in 81 runs.

DJ SAMMEL, ASSISTANT COACH DJ Sammel enters his second season as assistant baseball coach at W&J in 2012. Prior to coming to Washington & Jefferson, Sammel spent four years as the head coach of a local Federation League team in Pittsburgh and two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Langley High School. Sammel graduated with a degree in health and physical education from Edinboro University in 2003. He was a four-year starting infielder for the Fighting Scots’ baseball team, twice earning First Team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference accolades. Sammel was a First Team All-Region honoree in 2002 and was named to the Edinboro All-Time Baseball Team in 2009. Sammel also owns a master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University (Calif.). He resides with his wife Dina and the couple’s two children, three-year old Ella and one-year old Easton.
