General overview Brainly provides a platform where students, parents, and teachers help others with homework questions. Students use Brainly to strengthen their skills across subjects such as English, mathematics, science, and social studies. The platform allows them to connect with their peers, subject matter experts, and professional educators to discuss their subjects and seek answers to their questions. Users are asked to provide an explanation and a source for the answers they provide. Questions are categorized by subject, respective of country and school level. (There is no mention of parents, teachers, subject matter experts, helping students in the article cited. Brainly is purely a peerto-peer platform according to the article. There is also no mention that, "users are asked to provide an explanation and a source for the answers they provide. " Instead the article states, "It [Brainly] creates a social learning community in which users must answer questions for other users.") 6

Gamification Each user is given a fixed amount points upon registration, which are used to ask questions. Users can gain points by answering questions posted by others.

Ranks and Ranking Brainly awards "ranks" to users who provide frequent, high-quality answers. Some ranks are automatically rewarded for earning a preset number of points or a preset number of highest-quality answers to questions. Users may also apply for "special ranks," which may be awarded for excelling in specific subjects and other criteria. Additionally, the website bestows teacher ranks to professional teachers. The website features users who have answered the most questions or earned the most points upon a set of leader boards. The leader boards are classified as daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly.

Content moderation ✓ Brainly is moderated by a community of volunteers and staff and uses machine learning algorithms to filter its Knowledge Base. ✓ Moderators are trained users whose answers are excellent in content quality. ✓ Moderators are given permissions to respond to users who violate rules, including individuals who plagiarize, post spam, or post assessment questions. ✓ Moderators typically have a superior track record of helping others on Brainly. How does it work: When students first login to Brainly after creating their free account, they’ll be presented with the main dashboard. Big and bold in the center is the question, “What do you need to know?” which is a great place to start. Students can filter questions by subject area or school level if they’re looking to answer some, or they can just type in their question to get started. As the video above explains, you’ll typically get an answer to your question in under 10 minutes, which was my experience during testing as well. It helps that Brainly has over 60 million users, so in general, students are there and ready to help. 7

To ask a question, you have to spend “points.” First off, these points are free there’s no way to purchase additional points, no in-app purchases, or anything along those lines. Instead, you have to earn points by helping answer other student's’ questions. This is one way that Brainly facilitates the exchange of help, and also encourages students to find an area where they feel strong enough in to answer questions. Looking ahead, Brainly is focused on building out student learning paths, so that each user will have a more personalized Brainly experience focused on their strengths and learning gaps. The Brainly team wants to be sure students can set their own goals, and track their progress as they work in the app. Brainly Alternatives

BRAINLY

Brainly is a platform for students around the world to help each other with their homework. The site is geared mostly to middle and high school students, though college students use the platform too. Any registered student can post a question to the platform, and other students will post answers in reply. Brainly incentivizes users to respond to questions through gamification and a points system. Users need to use points to post a question. The more points they use, the more quickly their question will be answered. Users gain a basic number of points each time they log into the platform. However, users gain even more points by answering questions. Users gain an additional points bonus by giving the best answer (as decided by the question asker)[i]. In addition to needing points to ask questions, users are incentivized to provide good answers due to gamification. Users are ranked based on the number of points and “best answers” they have earned on the site. Each user is also given a title (beginner through genius) based on these factors. This ranking and points system incentivizes users to both engage on the site, but also give correct answers rather than posting incorrect content. Brainly further verifies content is correct and appropriate through the use of moderators (also users, who earn points by moderating the site). Brainly has done an incredible job of tapping into the preferences of its target market. Today’s middle and high school students grew up with technology and social media platforms, so they are used to the idea of going online for help with all of their needs, including their homework. Further, Brainly’s gamification and ranking system ties into students’ need for social validation. This is a powerful incentive tool to make sure usage on the site is both consistent and of high quality. This understanding of the target market has led to incredible user growth so far for Brainly. The platform serves 100 million monthly unique users (in comparison, Twitter had 330M monthly active users in the fourth quarter of 2017[ii]), and has 30 million answered questions on the site. Brainly is active in 35 countries, with most of its growth so far coming from outside of the US (Brainly was founded in Poland)[iii]. Though Brainly has done a great job with its user base, the question remains whether it can successfully translate these users into profits. So far, Brainly has made limited steps towards monetization. It recently offered a subscription service – Brainly Plus. For $24-45 a year, users can get access to verified answers, avoid ads, and get faster answers to their 9

questions. However, it is unclear how many users have converted so far, and at such a low price point, Brainly would need significant conversion to paying customers. Further, given that most of Brainly’s users are K-12 students, it will need to find an efficient way to get users’ parents to pay, and this separation between the user and the payer may lead to lower conversion rates. Brainly’s captive student audience should leave it well positioned to succeed as a crowd-sourced education solution. However, it will need to find a way to profit from its user growth to date in order to succeed longterm in the space.

Brainly mission is to give you, awesome students of the world, the power to share your knowledge with other students in a safe and fun place. 1)Help keep Brainly a safe and clean place for everyone. 2)Encourage other users’ good behaviour. 3)Keep your account and personal information safe. 4)Keep content quality high.

The first time a user breaks the rules, they will typically get a warning. However, if unacceptable behaviour continues, users will be locked out of using Brainly for various lengths of time depending on the severity of the infringement. Time locks range from 15 minutes to up to 2 days and, in serious cases, Brainly has the right to delete a user account indefinitely. This app is the community's official Android app designed to connect students with thousands of their peers around the world.
