Will Bernie Saunders the next Black becomes Bold in History President of the United States?

F

ebruary marks Black history month- a pause in time for the Black community to remember those who have helped in the abolition of slavery and those who have made a significant contribution to America and other parts of the world. All the greats such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela, and Marcus Garvey are known as the front-liners. However, I want to highlight the behind the scenes freedom fighters and women who retaliated against injustice in their way. For this Black History month, I want to celebrate women who have made their mark in the quest for equality. Based on research, here are a few women freedom fighters who fought for freedom and black expressions. Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) a charismatic speaker and preacher who never learned to read or write, Sojourner Truth travelled throughout the North preaching human rights and women’s rights. She gained her freedom in the 1820s and worked her way through doing menial jobs. She was recognized for her women’s rights speeches, “Ain’t I a woman?” Then there is Harriet Tubman, whose right name was Araminta Ross, an emancipator who led hundreds of slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad. A recent film called ‘Harriet’ illustrated her courageous and relentless spirit as she led the black people out of captivity. African American Scholar Anna Julia Cooper (1863-1954) she worked hard to convince black women to counter the belief that black men’s experiences and needs were the same as theirs. Rosa Parks (1913-2005) who stood up for justice by sitting in silence as a way to boycott the Montgomery bus. She is known as the “Mother of the Civil Rights Movement.” Francis Ellen Watkins Harper (18251911) she used poetry to protest issues concerning women’s suffrage and black women’s right to vote.

Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin (18421924) a journalist who challenged the opposition to women’s suffrage in Boston through her editorials. These are only just a few women who have not only fought for equality and justice, but they used their gifts, talents, knowledge and their God-given women strength and leadership to get things done. Women are the solution to many problems, so let’s denounce any other rhetoric that states the opposite. These women fought the outside voices for freedom. Now let us continue the fight by fighting the inner negative voice, insecurities and lies that were told to us as we cannot defeat the enemy without before conquering the foe within. Let’s rise and take our place because we all have work to do. Let freedom reigns.

he University of the West Indies (The UWI) Alumni Association, New York Chapter, is pleased to announce the 2020 Pelican Awardee as Dr. Godfrey Gibbison, Dean, School of Professional Studies, College of Charleston and Interim Dean of the Graduate School, University of Charleston. He joins an illustrious cohort of distinguished graduates who have been recognised by the Alumni Association for their contribution in their specific spheres of work and the society at large. Recent past distinguished Pelican honorees include Mr. Marlon James author and 2015 winner of the Man Booker Prize, the UK’s most prestigious literary award and Her Excellency Penelope Beckles – Permanent Representative from the twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations and Chair of UN Women. The award will be presented on February 19, 2020 at the American Foundation for The UWI, Legacy Awards Gala to be held at the Pierre Hotel, New York. The Pelican Award is presented to a graduate of the University of the West Indies who has excelled in his chosen field or an individual who has contributed significantly to the development of the University or has made an outstanding contribution to the Caribbean Region or the world at large. The awardee is selected from among nominees submitted by members of the Alumni chapter. From the community of Contrivance, Manchester Jamaica, Dr. Gibbison attended Knox College and Manchester High School prior to reading for a degree in Economics at the Mona Campus of The UWI. He graduated with honours and went on to the Iowa State University on a Fulbright Scholarship where he attained a master’s in Agricultural Economics. He then pursued the Doctor of Philosophy in Economics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). Dr. Gibbison taught briefly at the Radford University and Virginia Tech, Blacksburg both in Virginia; and Centre College in Danville Kentucky. This prior to his returning to Jamaica where he taught at The UWI, Mona Campus as lecturer in the Department of Economics. He then transitioned to Georgia Southern University, as Assistant Professor in the School of Economic Development. He subsequently held the posts of Assurance Learning Coordinator in the College of Business, Associate Professor and finally Director of the School of Economic Development. NEWS Mount Vernon man sentenced to prison for presenting Police with forged documents

W

estchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced Ian Davis of Mount Vernon was sentenced to prison for presenting police with a forged document. In November, a jury found Davis guilty of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Second Degree, a class D felony, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the Second Degree, an unclassified misdemeanor. Judge David Zuckerman sentenced Davis to two and a half to five years on the felony, and six months on the misdemeanor. The sentences will run concurrently. On April 8, 2016, Ian Davis went to the Village of Irvington Police Department to obtain an impounded 2011 Land Rover. While there, he submitted a forged lien release to the Irvington Police in an attempt to get the vehicle out of impound despite a hold having been placed on it. Police told Davis they could not release the vehicle to him due to the hold and the defendant was also informed his license was suspended. Despite that warning, the defendant drove away in another vehicle, a 2012 BMW X5, in front of the Village Police Department headquarters. Irvington police officers observed the defendant driving and arrested him for driving with a suspended license. They subsequently determined the document was a forgery.

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY: eventeen Jamaicans returned to Jamaica last Tuesday after being deported from the UK by the Home Office. The 17 were deported despite a lastminute court order stopping the deportation of detainees from Colnbrooke and Harmondsworth detention centres, near Heathrow, after lawyers argued mobile phone signal problems meant some of the detainees could not get legal advice. The ruling said the government must not deport anyone from those centres unless they had access to a functioning, non-O2 Sim card on or before 3 February. Twenty-five others were taken off the flight and spared deportation because of the order filed and won by the group, Detention Action. Tottenham MP, Guyanese-roots David Lammy, said it was an “outrage” that the flight had departed. “The government wants to give the impression that everyone who was deported was a hardened violent criminal, but the reality is many of those who were scheduled to be deported had committed non-violent, one-time drugs offences,” he said. “The lessons from Windrush have not been learned. Lives are being ruined because we don’t remember our history.” But in a defiant statement, the prime minister’s spokesman said “we bitterly regret” the court decision that stopped the 25 people from leaving, and will urgently appeal. “The offences which these people were responsible for include one manslaughter, one firearms offence, seven violent offences, two

which are in the category of rape or sexual offences and 14 drugs offences,” the spokesman said. He added: “We make no apology whatsoever for seeking to remove serious foreign national offenders.” Chancellor Sajid Javid said no-one protected by the court ruling was on the flight. “It is absolutely right that when they have served their sentence that we send them out of the country,” Javid told BBC Radio 5 Live on Tuesday morning. “They are not British nationals, they are not members of the Windrush generation, they are all foreign national offenders.”

On Monday evening, around 30 community groups participated in the second major protest demanding an end what they consider to be unfair deportation practices against British residents. Between 150 to 200 people endured low temperatures and intermittent pouring rain outside UK Prime Minister’s Boris Johnson’s residence to denounce the latest scheduled mass deportations of British residents to Jamaica. “We want human rights, no charter flights” they chanted. The demonstration against the charter flight began across Number 10 and travelled down Downing Street to the intersection with Parliament Street & Bridge Street, blocking four main roads. But the government has argued that the people due to be deported are hardened criminals and that their removal from the country is proportionate. “The people on this plane are people who have committed very serious crimes, whether it’s rape, manslaughter, murder,” said Rishi Sunak MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Lee Jasper of BAME Lawyers for Justice, however, said that deportees are made up of people with minor level convictions such as low level fighting, traffic violations and low level drug dealing, “not the serious psychopathic, rapist and murderers described by Boris Johnson.” People who would have been British, “had their parents not been denied citizenship under the Windrush Scandal” are now finding themselves “subject to arbitrary deportation,” Jasper said.

USCIS Updates Process for Accepting Petitions for Relatives Abroad WASHINGTON: .S. Citizenship and Immigration Services today announced that, as part of the adjustment of its international footprint to increase efficiencies, Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, will only be processed domestically by USCIS or internationally by the Department of State in certain circumstances beginning Feb 1, 2020. DOS will assume responsibility for certain services previously provided at USCIS international offices, services that DOS already provide in countries where USCIS does not have a presence. Eligible active-duty service members assigned overseas will file their Form I-130 locally with DOS, as will certain nonmilitary petitioners who meet specific criteria for consular processing. “USCIS continues to modernize and be-

USCIS continues to expand online filing options, which are available to those filing domestically or those filing from abroad, saving applicants and petitioners time and money.” Generally, DOS will process Form I-130 locally if the petition falls under blanket authorization criteria, as defined by USCIS: Temporary blanket authorizations for instances of prolonged or severe civil strife or a natural disaster; or Blanket authorization for U.S. service members assigned to military bases abroad.

In addition to these blanket authorizations, DOS maintains the discretion to accept Form I-130 if a U.S. citizen petitioner meets the “exceptional circumstance” criteria as outlined in the Policy Manual update. All other petitioners residing overseas must file Form I-130 online or by mail through the USCIS Dallas Lockbox facility for domestic processing. Her late dad, Patrick Flemming played the trumpet on Denroy Morgan's 1979 hit song 'I’ll Do Anything For You,' as well as Dennis Brown's 'Westbound Train.' "He whetted my appetite for music as a child and I have never been able to get it out of my system since" she disclosed. 14 years ago, Rose was living her best life in Jamaica. She was making strides with 'Real Hot Gal' that was recorded at Buju Banton's studio and her hit single 'If You Wanna Dance,' featuring Rolly Bop and Sample Six was being played at 'Passa Passa' in Kingston. 'If You Wanna Dance' had an international presence on BET/Tempo TV as well as being rotated on multiple radio stations in the Diaspora. In 2007, right when her music career was taking flight, Rose returned to New York to start a family and eventually went back to school. After a hiatus, the singer is back with a brand new name Nrozae and a new sound that she is confident will take her to the top. Looking back and making the comparisons, Nrozae said "I was young without much knowledge about life and the music business. Today, I am mature and knowledgeable about the business side of the industry. To be honest I was missing the stage, now I ready to unleash my talent for the world to see!" Musing on her journey and the decision to cover 'Modern Girl,' Nrozae said it was the brainchild of executive producer Sharmelle John of Diamond Queen Records. “Sharmelle had the idea. She wanted to inject new life into an old song and put an upbeat rhythm and feel to it. She choose 'Modern Girl' as the song and what a great choice it is turning out to be,” she shared. Sharmelle has some history in the entertainment industry. In the 80s she was a founding member of girl's group 'Sha-Lor' that was signed to Jumpstreet Records. The group shared stage with Soul To Soul, Shelly Thunder and the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Brixton Academy in London, England. John was also casted as an extra in the movie 'Crush Groove' starring Curtis Blow, LL Cool J and was featured in a TV commercial for the 1989 Oscar Awards on CBS TV. Throughout the course of his career, Buju Banton has released twelve studio albums, with the latest being 2010's 'Before The Dawn'. This new project has not yet been titled but has a tentative April release date.

Even in light of their false confidence, teens are aware of the importance of financial education. Set goals. Managing your money is more meaningful when you’re doing it with purpose. This might mean budgeting to ensure you have enough money to maintain your auto insurance and keep gas in your car, or you may be saving for a big senior trip. Knowing what you want to achieve with your money can help you plan how you spend it more wisely. Weigh needs vs. wants. When you begin making your own money, it’s easier to indulge your own wishes and spend money on things you don’t necessarily need. To some extent, that’s not a bad thing; rewarding yourself is fine when you do so within reason. That means not exceeding your available funds, and not forsaking things you truly need, like gas money to get to and from a job or school. Get a debit card. Most people find that having cash on hand makes it easier to spend. If you use a debit card instead, you’re an extra step away from spending so you have a little more time to consider your purchase. Another benefit of a debit card is it helps track your purchases in real time so you can keep constant tabs on your balance and ensure you don’t overdraft your account. Start a savings habit. Even if your income doesn’t allow for much, it’s a good idea to get in the habit of setting aside a portion of each check. It may only be $10, but over time each $10 deposit can build your account toward a long-range goal. Protect your privacy. alentine’s Day, also called St. Valentine’s Day, holiday (February 14) when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts. The holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day. It came to be celebrated as a day of romance from about the 14th century. Although there were several Christian martyrs named Valentine, the day may have taken its name from a priest who was martyred about 270 ce by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus. According to legend, the priest signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and, by some accounts, healed from blindness. Other accounts hold that it was St. Valentine of Terni, a bishop, for whom the holiday was named, though it is possible the two saints were actually one person. Another common legend states that St. Valentine defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from war. It is for this reason that his feast day is associated with love.

Woman charged for taking cash for ‘sham marriage’ Newark, New Jersey: 28-year-old New Jersey woman admitted she accepted $1,500 to enter into what authorities said was a “sham marriage” with a Nigerian man hoping to become a U.S. citizen. Ajia Strauss, of Newark, pleaded guilty in federal court in Pittsburgh to conspiracy to defraud the United States, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Western Pennsylvania said in a statement.

Strauss and Monsuru Ogunbiyi, 36, got married in New Jersey on June 3, 2016. Ogunbiyi, though, was already living in western Pennsylvania and returned there following the ceremony, authorities said. The next year, Ogunbiyi used Strauss’ Newark address when he began the process of becoming a citizen, according to court papers. The two also exchanged texts on multiple occasions so they could learn about one another, opened a joint

bank account and took staged photos of themselves together ahead of an appearance before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Ogunbiyi previously pleaded guilty and is likely to be deported, according to court papers. Strauss is scheduled to be sentenced in Pittsburgh on June 3. She could face up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines, authorities said.

N.J. pushes Trump administration to tighten rules for lead in drinking water N

ew Jersey is pushing the federal government to beef up protections for lead in drinking water, after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency suggested major changes to its rules for the first time in decades. The top law enforcement officers in nine states sent a letter to the agency summarizing their concerns on Wednesday, February 19th the extended deadline for

public comment. The EPA’s proposed changes “misses the mark,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement, and fails “to adequately address our nation’s rapidly deteriorating water infrastructure.” State Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, who co-signed the letter, argued in a statement that more resources needed to be spent on lower-income communities.

Medical marijuana could soon be covered under workers comp in N.J tate lawmakers took steps on two bills on Thursday, February 13, 2020 that could bring protections for companies that insure cannabis-related companies in the Garden State and also allow those on workers’ compensation to have their medical weed covered. The state Assembly committee on financial institutions advanced the two bills, but the state Senate has yet to take up either. The first (A377) protects insurance companies and their employees from retaliation by state or local government if they engage with marijuana-related businesses. The bill cleared committee 11-1 with one abstention. The bill would not require insurance companies to take on cannabis-related clients. “As we move forward addressing marijuana as a medicine and holding up industries, we have to put in place, first protections for our residents, but also protections for professional businesses that participate in the industry,” said Assemblyman Joe Danielsen, D-Somerset, who sponsored the bill. Marijuana remains a federally illegal schedule 1 drug, even though states like New Jersey have legalized it for medical use. The contradicting federal and state laws have left banks and insurers wary of doing business with any pot-associated company. The Secure and Fair Enforcement, (SAFE) Banking Act passed the U.S. House in the fall, but has stalled in the Senate. It includes a provision sought by U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., that would allow companies to seek insurance. If passed, the proposed state law would not supersede federal regulations, meaning insurers could see federal actions against them. But federal officials have largely left state medical and legalized marijuana programs around the country untouched.

Late last year, the EPA proposed several updates to its Lead and Copper Rule. That includes mandating that systems replace certain lead lines and improving the chemical process that prevents lead from breaking off into water. That process is what broke down in Newark. Grewal and other officials support those changes, but want the agency to do more.

Among other requests, the letter asked the EPA to tighten standards for how much lead is allowed in drinking water. On the same day the EPA originally filed the proposal, Murphy endorsed a plan that would replace all lead lines in New Jersey over a decade, at a potential cost of more than $2 billion.

How to Pay Taxes?

n order to determine how much income tax you owe, you will first need to prepare your tax return. You have until April 15th to file and pay your individual income tax. If you miss the deadline, you will be charged penalties and interest. The IRS gives you several options for paying your taxes. To pay your tax liability in full right away, use one of these three methods:

1. Pay by Check or Money Order: If you are filing a paper tax return, you can make a payment by check or money order. Use IRS Form 1040-V (Payment Voucher) to submit your payment. Form 1040-V can be mailed to the IRS in the same envelope as your tax return — just don’t staple the forms together. Make sure you use the correct IRS mailing address for your tax payment. 2. Pay with a Bank Account (Direct Pay): Perhaps the easiest way to pay your Federal taxes is by using “Direct Pay” on the IRS.gov website. This method allows you to pay your tax bill directly from your checking or savings account. You will need to provide your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to use the Direct Pay system. When making a tax payment, you will be asked the reason for your payment — make sure to select “Tax Return” so your payment is applied to the amount owed on your income tax return. 3. Pay with Cash: If you want to pay your taxes in cash, the IRS provides a way for you to do this at participating retail stores. The program is called “PayNearMe” and there’s a $3.99 fee per cash payment. Note that it usually takes 5-7 business days to process cash payments, so make sure you know the applicable tax deadline and plan ahead to ensure that your payment is received on time. In some cases, you might not have enough money in your bank account to fully pay your tax bill by the due date. The IRS gives you several options here – although you should always pay as much as you can by the deadline in order to minimize penalties and interest. 4. Pay by Debit or Credit Card: If you don’t have enough funds in the bank, but you do have available credit on a credit card, you may use your credit card to pay your taxes. Visit the IRS website for a list of Payment Processors. Most of the time, the interest/fees associated with paying your taxes by credit card are less than the interest and penalties imposed by the IRS for paying late, making this a viable option for many people who don’t have the cash on-hand. If you owe $50,000 or less in taxes, you can apply for an Online Payment Agreement on the IRS website. This means you would agree to pay your tax balance in installments over time. Note that interest will still accrue on your unpaid balance, however, you will not be considered in default. To apply, you’ll need to provide the IRS with information about your income and tax liability. In many cases, they will be able to give you a decision immediately online.

5. Offer to Settle: If it will cause “extraordinary hardship” to pay your tax liability, you can make a settlement offer to the IRS. This is called an Offer in Compromise. Essentially, you offer to pay a portion of your taxes immediately and the IRS agrees to drop the rest. There’s a lot of paperwork to fill out in order for a settlement to be approved, and you’ll need to demonstrate that it’s impossible for you to fully pay the taxes that you owe. If you are able to pay your taxes through an installment plan, you will not be eligible for an Offer in Compromise.

RELATIONSHIP How to Handle Valentine’s Day When You’re In a New Relationship By Patrick Allan hen you’ve just started dating someone, Valentine’s Day is more awkward than romantic. You don’t know if you should plan a lavish night on the town, buy them a gift, or simply ignore the day altogether. Here’s what two dating and relationship experts recommend. No Matter What, Talk About It Beforehand: Before you make any sort of plans for Valentine’s Day, its best you talk things over with the person you’re seeing. Dr. Nerd love, dating columnist and author of New Game +: The Geek’s Guide to Love, Sex, & Dating, told us that this is especially true if you’re someone who feels strongly about the holiday one way or the other. If you don’t like the commercialism, cheesiness, or manufactured pressure of it all, it’s best to mention it sooner rather than later. Or if you like using the holiday to get into the spirit of romance, it’s important you let them know. As Vanessa Marin, licensed marriage and family therapist and Life hacker contributor, explains, surprising them with a lavish celebration can be a recipe for disaster. If you’re Not Exclusive, Ignore the Holiday: It’s hard to measure the seriousness of a relationship with time, says Marin, since relationships unfold at wildly different paces. For some couples, dating for

three weeks could mean you’ve only had one or two dates. For others, dating for three weeks could mean you’re already monogamous. So, as a general guideline, Marin recommends you base your plans off of your exclusivity, or lack thereof: I think a better guideline to use is whether or not you’ve had “the talk” about being exclusive. Or, if you’re in non-monogamous relationships, that you’ve talked about being serious. If you’re not exclusive, I would ignore the holiday altogether. You shouldn’t expect Valentine’s to be a big deal, especially if you’re in the first weeks of a relationship. Romance is just starting to blossom between you and your partner,

so there’s no need to put any extra pressure on each other because of your timing. If it works out, there’s always next year. If you feel the need to do something, Nerd love suggests you go with something small but cute like a cheesy card at most. If You Are Exclusive, a Date Is Fine, but Ditch the Gifts: If you’ve had “the talk” with your partner and are now exclusive, celebrating is fine as long as it’s within reason. That said, Nerd love still warns against anything too extravagant: If you’ve been dating for a couple months, a simple romantic date is certainly a good way to celebrate, although I wouldn’t go overboard. My advice for couples is, if

you’re not going to ignore it, then just stay home instead of trying to go out to a crowded restaurant that’s jacked up the prices. It’s more romantic, it’s cheaper and it’s a hell of a lot more fun. Marin echoes the “dinner at home” concept, and notes a couple other perks that go along with staying in. First off, you won’t have to stress about getting a reservation on one of the busiest nights of the year. Second, you won’t make each other feel uncomfortable by surrounding yourselves with a bunch of much more serious couples. It’s just you and your partner enjoying a nice meal together without any pressure. Even if you do have a date night, you should probably still avoid giving gifts. As Marin explains, one person inevitably ends up spending more than the other person, and both parties are left feeling awkward. And you should absolutely avoid giving any extravagant gifts, says Nerd love. Big gifts very early on in a relationship raises a huge red flag to most people and will probably freak them out. If you’ve been together for a few months, however, and you see each other at least once or twice a week, a gift around $30 is reasonable. Maybe a book by their favorite author, or a movie you both mentioned wanting to see. Regardless, if you talk about it beforehand as we’ve advised, there won’t be any problems.
